I study criminal psychology and spent quite a bit of time studying the Aileen Wuornos case. Charlize Theron's performance in 'Monster' blew me away. She nailed it! I think Aileen herself would have been impressed. Charlize is such an incredible actress. The Wuornos case was heartbreaking in many ways. I feel that she was victimized throughout her entire life, thrown away by everyone in her life. I don't believe murder is ever the answer, but I do think the guy who raped her deserved it. All rapists deserve to die in my biased opinion, as a victim myself. Aileen needed help. Instead, she was given death. There are people in prison for life that committed far worse crimes! It was as if they wanted to make an example out of her to feed the media frenzy. Even her beloved girlfriend signed movie deals and threw her under the bus. I didn't know that Patty actually spoke to Aileen, etc. Somehow that makes me love the film even more. Charlize really transformed herself and got into the mind of Aileen Wuornos unlike anyone else in Hollywood could. Ive always loved that they went on location and did the scenes at the actual bar where Aileen was arrested. They did the movie right and I think they really did Aileen and the world a service by showing us the true story as never depicted before. I saw a 1992 film called 'Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story' (if memory serves.). While the film was well cast, I found 'Monster' to be a far superior film.

Visionery1 I agree. I think Eileen should’ve been locked up in a mental institution for life, not given the death penalty. Listen, in the cases of John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy, people like that, I believe they got what they deserved. Eileen of course should’ve never killed anyone, but she seemed to me anyway to have severe mental illnesses as a result of a horrible life. I know not everyone with a horrible life kills people, and that’s a very good point. I’ve just always been conflicted on this case in particular.

She was absolutely PHENOMENAL in the film! It’s like she morphed into a completely different person! And yet she was so humble about it here. She was born to be an actress and no one could ever top her portrayal of Aileen. She put her entire heart and soul into the performance. So truly deserved the Academy Award!
My heart has always gone out to Aileen. She had a horrifying life from the very beginning, never had a childhood, was betrayed by so many people, violated by so many men, and didn’t have one compassion person in her life. She was truly a damaged soul. I hope she is finally at peace now.

I love the sensitivity and nuance with which they approached this. I don't like the black-and-white moralism of the judicial/prison/police system. i feel that if you dive into people and their motives the way they did with Aileen Wuornos, you can start to understand them, and why they had the range of choices they did, and why they maybe made them. You shouldn't wait for someone to commit an atrocity to "solve" it with imprisonment or execution. We should think what kind of society created this person in the first place. And they never try to excuse the atrocities Aileen committed. But they tried to understand, and that's the meaning of compassion

The role was played so well & you could see the fear ,the terror & the discust of the real woman each time she had to allow these sick men to use her & de humanize her & each time she had to be with a John, how much she began to hate these disgusting pigs that brutalized her. She was abused all her life to the extent of snapping. Most ppl could never understand the brutality she went thru. I believe in her mind she couldn't take it anymore & the men that used her should've been the ones executed.
I don't think she could've ever healed from what she went thru. But she wasn't the monster. They should've helped her. After being abused most of her life, in the end, she was
    Abused for being abused.

I don't think this guy gets it *at all*!! 🤦‍♀️🙄 8.40 where Charlize says that Aileen talked about getting raped like she was getting an ice cream, and he says, like it was something that just happened, as if it was matter of fact. No. BIG difference between someone who talks about something that happens to them in a detached way because it's too huge to deal with vs someone who accepts something and is okay with it. I think this interviewer is mistaking the former for the latter. #yikes 😝 People often talk about their traumas in a detached way because people's lack of sensitivity or acknowledgement of what a painful or scary thing it was to endure can, in itself, be traumatizing. I think they also look for people's response to see if they get it. This douche looks like he doesn't get it at all. 😳 We can sympathise with this woman without agreeing with her actions. We can emphasize with her circumstances and the rotten cards she was dealt over and over. It doesn't make what she did okay, but it does help us to understand, and maybe we can help another such a person from going off the rails in future. I'm glad these two bright, intelligent women get it, and most of the rest of us seem to too, at least, even if the interviewer doesn't seem to. That kind of blindness is part of the problem. Condemning someone for their actions without understanding why. Again, it may not make it okay, but if may make it understandable at least. Poor Aileen. Had no one to advocate for her her whole life. Such a tragedy. Again, still not okay. But a tragedy nonetheless. 🙏💫

Wournos did not deserve the death penalty. Life in prison yes. But not death. She was so damaged and traumatised, and that can actually change your neurology. I’m amazed this was not cited as mitigation.
I don’t usually go for films about serial killers because I don’t believe in glorifying them or making them famous, but I think her story needed to be told.
I don’t agree with what she did, obviously. But I think it’s clear she did it because she herself had been utterly failed by her society, and her case should be enough to stop the death penalty.

i thought Charlize Theron's portrayal of Aileen Wuornos was absolutely brilliant. playing her without make up, fancy clothes etc was brill too. i'm not sure how i feel about Eileen herself, i did respect her openness tho, but as i say not sure if she was actually as evil as told, don't think she deserved the death penalty tho. well done Charlize

Rose didn't ask Charlize anything about the actual filming of especially that first murder. It should've been automatic that he'd want to know what that experience was like for her. Doing the job that he does on TV, how could he have watched the movie and not wondered??

It's funny how a misery of some becomes a success for others , this world is crazy, if this woman hadn't been a serial killer, Charlize wouldn't have had wun an oscar by now...isn't it ironic, don't you think?

    • @wrenegade6283
      @wrenegade6283 6 років тому +13

Lupita Nyong'o actually mentioned the exact same thing in her Oscar speech. " It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s." I think Charlize noticed that, as well, but it'll be weird to give credit to a serial killer.

A beautiful, profound, and touching, but amazingly, for whatever reason, forgotten movie. My DVD copy looks like a bootleg, even though it's legit. This movie represents movie making at it's very best: why is it so low profile - it got an academy award for best lead actor in Charlize Theron for f***s sake. Anyway, great movie. R.

Charlize is a very good actress I seen many of her movies. I must say I was totally taken off guard when someone told me that it was you in Monster and I said oh no that's not her that woman is really ugly.. I was used to seeing you do J'adore commercial song I was stunned when someone said that that was you I couldn't believe it. It takes a very strong person to make a decision to do a movie like this.

I'm a recovering heroin addict, I hustled in the streets of Providence from 1998- 2005, jumping in and out of cars, used to hang in front of video/book stores for money to get off E.
Im almost ten yrs clean today
I can tell you this, cops, Christians, priests, and married men are the most dangerous predators.
I understand what happened to Lee
    I lived it
I'm healthy and clean and living with the love of my life (my gf) She is my Angel , sent from another place

I wish Patty Jenkins had brought this kind of character complexity to Wonder Woman. I wonder why the villains of Wonder Woman were so poorly written when she clearly has a very intelligent understanding of how to portray the human motivations of even the "worst" people.

Aileen shouldn't have been out to death, she had so many mitigating circumstances.....grew up in hell and was basically tortured. Yes jail for life but death was a witch hunt. Also her representation was woeful to say the least
