I've had mine for a month and I love it. I got the $250 Dollar 36 inch at Walmart with a lift off hood and a paper towel holder and the magnetic utensil holder on the left. Fried chicken legs are phenomenal on it.
Thanks Todd, you taught me something!! The part of my griddle closest to me, the front, I guess, wasn’t getting hot enough to season. So flipping the griddle, like you did, should really help during the seasoning. Thanks
Just received the 28" for Christmas. I love it!! Seasoned mine 3 times with lard then cooked bacon first. After that it was ribeyes and onions!! Oh man!! Delicious!! After every cook I put water on the hot grill scrape residue and wipe clean with a paper towel then put a small amount of lard back on the warm griddle. After it cools I cover with a sheet of freezer paper shiny side down. Works so far!!
I had always wanted a good griddle and finally after 40 years and several years of good use with a Blackstone grill I purchased a bigger Blackstone propane griddle and am getting ready to set it up today. Excellent info in your video thank you I'm lookin forward to using it for the first time this evening
That seasoning sauce is great. Makes my hands nice and soft too :) When I got the 17 and 21" griddles I gave them both 3 coats and then cooked bacon smash burgers. Use nice fatty beef 70/30 and fatty bacon and that will set that seasoning REALLY good. Nothing like a good burned in bacon grease coating. I found the blue shop towels work best for cleaning and oiling, leaves no "lint" behind.
That flipping the griddle to season the edge is game changing! I just got my 28” griddle as an early Father’s Day gift from my son & I love it! I put 8 or 9 layers down before I cooked on it. But I couldn’t get the edge totally black. I’m gonna try the “flip tip” tonight. Thanks, Todd, for a great video!
Thanks Todd! My 22” is arriving April 5th! Yes after not pulling the trigger on purchasing one for a year the wife said do it lol!!!! I’ve always used lodge cast iron fry pans and have purchased several over the years at yard sales and re - seasoned them ! But now Iam so looking forward to my BLACKSTONE griddle! My 22" On The Go arrived Friday. I seasoned 100% on point after watching your vid, Blackstone's vid and the printed manual in the box. I actually went less than the
i just got a griddle i seasoned it five times before my first cook and I am going to treat it like I do my cast iron. clean it good and while its still hot add another coat after each cook
Was given an older Blackstone griddle that was neglected by previous owner...a good cleaning, agriddle cleaning block and some seasoning and good as new. Breakfast at camp has never been better
I objected pretty hard to the idea there needs to be a special product to season your griddle. This was such a great explanation of why this product was developed and marketed to the blackstone community. Great job.
Seasoning the surface was a huge and persistent cause of confusion for new griddle owners. There is endless debate on the forums over which oil to use despite the professionals explaining it doesn’t matter. This product created a unified solution. Still doesn’t matter. Ha
So seasoned and cooked burgers, bacon for wraps. Warmed the wraps and off we go. Great lunch. Thanks for making this so easy. Canola oil and a little time…most excellent.
Hey Todd, just got my 36” air fryer combo & am assembling it. I’ve been wanting it for a long time & can’t wait to fire it up. I was wondering & maybe it’s going a little overboard, but would it be advantageous to season the underside of the griddle? Season the top & sides then flip it over & season the bottom. Since part of the reason for seasoning is to keep rust away & the underside can rust just as easily as the top, I figure, why not…
Hi Blain, I just seasoned up my father's day 36" culinary blackstone today and had our first cook! Amazing griddle and experience! I wouldn't season the underside, you may start a fire by having high gas flames close to the oiled surface. Griddle on!
Do you ever wash a brand new surface with soap and water to get the factory coatings off before seasoning it? Or does that stuff just burn off with the initial heating of the griddle before you put any seasoning down?
just got our grill & getting ready to season it. Understand about seasoning the top & sides but do you do anything to the underside? Of course, not going to cook on it but to protect it from rusting. Our grill will be going with us to FL. Thanks from a Newbie!
Todd, I recently purchased a 36 inch blackstone girddle and looked at about 6-8 different videos on how to season the griddle including yours....... I have sent comments to a number of you "youtuber" video producers with no responses from any of you???? So I will add some additional comments to see if any of you respond??? I seasoned my grill based on the composite of all the videos I watched and got what I think was an almost 100 % seasoning....... thank you for that!!! There a couple of comments I want to make. Keeping the temp at high makes it difficult to get the oil evenly spead out and by the time you are on your 4th layer, your towel can burn. Only one of you mentioned reducing the heat between layers of oil. Also NO ONE MENTIONED that if you store your tools in a plastic bin under the griddle that the bid would melt......! Fortunately have a neighbor with a blackstone who warned me about this....... I am going to begin my grilling career with bacon and eggs tomorrow morning....... wish me welll.......
You are correct, reduce the heat between applications of oil. I've only seen one other UA-camr mention that. Did mine today and reduced the heat between layers and the outcome was fantastic. Good luck to you!
New to the this UA-camr. I just bought another blackstone but this one with air fryers. I've left messages on blackstone site and couple other UA-cam channels. For some reason after three oil downs my griddle turned white and has cracks that look like viens. Wth. I used the blackstone season oil. My other one I used avocado oil. It is beautiful and still going strong. But this one I'm ready after two days to take it back and let the store take care of it.
Here's a question, after you are doing cooking and you clean it up and add more oil, do you put it on high and let the oil burn off for an additional season after each cook session?
I always do that to mine. Then when that burns off and cools some I will oil it again with a cloth and then put the cover over it and store it that way I know for sure it will not rust and its good to go and extra layer of protection on it everytime.
i have the one of the first griddles when they first started selling them at Walmart I love my griddle but I also hate it due to the grease drain that runs down towards you then to the right into a grease catcher that does not work I get grease all down the side and down the leg on to the floor is there anything i c an buy or and idea of what i can put on it so it don't run down the side anymore
Do you ever get the sticky not all the way bonded surface? It's of course the surface areas that your utensils leave a mark. I used the stone tool to strip down the non bonded layers on the griddle and underneath was the black glossy finish that isn't sticky. But I can see the weld marks. What do I need to do?
Thanks Todd! I just seasoned my 28 inch Blackstone. I have a couple of spots that aren’t black (top two corners and front bottom less than a half inch) even though I hammered it 4 times with the Blackstone seasoning. Can I or should I go back and do “the flip” and season those spots again before cooking?
Ok so just got my griddle, very excited however after going through the seasoning process. My griddle doesn’t quite look like what you are describing. Burned a bunch of paper towels and scorched several plain white cotton cloths. What did I do wrong? Can’t wait to griddle

I want to use my new 36 inch blackstone griddle tonight. I've now seen this video how to season it and another video by blackstone saying you have to wash it with soap and water 1st. Which is right??
My griddle top has rough spots from burned on excess oil from the first seasoning. I'm afraid I can't get it smooth and then re season. Any tips to get it smooth. I have the Blackstone scraper and concerned I have "pitted" the griddle. Help please! Cause I absolutely love my Blackstone!
Hey Todd, this was a very informative video. I just purchased the 22-inch Blackstone Griddle, and it will be our first time using one. I know to leave a nice coat of oil after I clean it, for the next meal. However, do I do the same when I'm packing it away, to leave the campsite? Or do I put it away dry?
@@praisehisawesomename I got my griddle yesterday and put it together. Today, I followed your instructions to the letter, and it came out great. @@MrHoward383 Hi, Howard. Without me being there to diagnose it in the flesh (impossible over the internet) I can only guess. I have seasoned and used well over TWENTY of our 22" griddles. Your should have the piezo ignitor (not battery operated, correct?) If so, you just need to adjust those little ignitors (I call them ignition needles). You also have to slowly turn the knob so the gas starts to come out before the ignition click happens. If you turn the knob to the left at full speed, you're not going to get ignition. I hope that makes sense.
Hello Todd, just got mine, a 36". Wanted to ask, since I didn't scroll down the 100s of comments. I live in PA and I'm sure you know about the cold weather and the months we go with no griddling/barbecues. In this no cook time in those cold months, what do you recommend for maintaining the Blackstone? Season it and cover it, let it be or fire that baby up every once in awhile and season it?
I have a new griddle and seasoned it per instructions. Initially it was uniformly blackened. We have cooked on it for a month and there are spots that have a lighter color to it. Is this expected or do I need to start from scratch? I used the Blackstone Conditioner.
I just bought a 17in Blackstone for camping and its just me.! I can't get this thing to get hotter than 400 degrees. Im in garage. No wind. Checked tank on other things, works fine. The flame is even and consistent. Any tips. This is aggravating
For a year and a half,i worked with a unseasoned grill along the edges, not, being able to lift around the heavy top,i found the answer through Hussey,to close the lid, most have now, my air fryer combo finally looks as pretty as the ones on You Tube,i’m exited, and stoked. I’m wondering when you’re going to be unboxing the Air Fryer Pro Combo???
Todd Western Pa is turning fast how should I store my griddle? I have a Blackstone cover but was thinking of moving in into my shed. Any suggestions. Go Penns
For the winter, you can move it inside if you want, Make sure there is a little layer of oil, then you could put some wax paper on top of it for the winter!
Howdy!! If you aren't going to use it this winter, you will need a combination of some type of hard cover with some typebof soft cover. If you aren't going to be using it, and you have a shed, I would pull it in there. Keep that nice layerbof oil on there and make sure moisture can't get at it. Looking forward to meeting you one day when we visit PA. God bless!
Todd, I have seen a few videos where people suggest sanding the griddle cooktop before seasoning it and this helps make the top smoother and then they say it uses less oil for cooking . What is your thinking on this ?
NOTE! The Blackstone seasoning stuff strips the orange and white paint RIGHT off the front control panel with just a touch when the panel is hot (burners are on)!!!
Question out of the blue. How o I keep my propane tank from freezing ? My problem is when it freezes it doesn't push enough propane to keep my griddle top hot
All hail the mighty Blackstone griddle. I have the 36" with the deep frier on the side. I have about 25 cooks or so on it since I bought it about 2 months ago. I think I seasoned it ok..3 burn offs with vegetable oil. When I learned of the Blackstone griddle seasoning and conditioner I bought two jars. Can I go over it a few times with the Blackstone conditioner on top of the old seasoning or do I have to strip down and start over again? There are some parts that aren't seasoned well..mainly up front near the control panel.
We recommend that you strip it down and re-season. This is better because then the whole griddle is seasoned well and most importantly, evenly. Hope this helps!
Great how to video!! You explained everything very well!! 👍💛 I'll have to check out the new conditioner, maybe give it a coat with that as a winterizer ❄ I thought it was very easy to season the griddle, easier than doing a cast iron pan 🙂 I used grape seed oil to first season mine. That was exactly what I cooked on my griddle the first time, hashbrowns, sausage & eggs🍳. The next thing I cooked was 🥓 bacon. 😊🙂
I got a 28 inch blackstone adventure ready griddle . I have had issues with trying to find a lid for it. A tarp isn’t working. I live in Ohio where you never know what kinda weather we’re getting
So how did you deal with the melted microfiber? I was using those old t shirt rags from lowes to season and apparently some shirts were not cotton. A portion of one melted on the griddle 😢
@@BlackstoneGriddles already bought some from walmart. Will be trying to re-season a carbon steel (black steel) skillet with it just how you did the blackstone. Winter is setting in here in Michigan & my 17" blackstone is out on balcony & be there tucked away for winter
Best thing ever bought my 36 inch years ago mine is the old style with grease drip in front only bad part Bought new 22 for camping the 36 was a pain to load
@@richfortin08 not even a little. I have been using the 17' for years camping and never had an issue. I use my 36' several times a week. If they are properly seasoned from the start you should never have an issue. Just pulled my 17" out of the trailer after 5 months and no rust whatsoever.
Really good video T.O. Double D! I appreciate all your pro tips and what’s not in the instruction manual. You always have to figure out what works best for you and your new product.
This is my 2nd blackstone, which I intend on seasoning w/avocado oil. My first was the 17 inch tailgater one but I got the 36 inch culinary grill. I sprung for the blackstone seasoning oil but just realized it has palm oil and am returning it. But this video is super helpful, even though I successfully seasoned my first one, but 36 inches is a lot more grill to work with than 17. Was hoping to know, if you read this, how you feel about the use of palm oil in the seasoning oil? Considering we're supposed to constantly use the blackstone seasoning oil for storage and whatnot, taking palm oil intentionally to smoke point seems like a foolish thing to do, as it is a known carcinogenic. I'm hoping blackstone will reformulate without it.
I think the difference is when you are seasoning a cook surface your polymerizing the oil and creating a second skin. If your cooking and consuming the oil, that’s where the danger comes in - not by changing the molecular structure and bonding to metal.
@@Sodablood that is super helpful thank you! I am going to try using sunflower oil this time (much less pricey anyway) but I may look more into using the blackstone stuff if the seasoning doesn't take well.
@@Sodablood They don't really talk much about a seasoned griddle that has to much oil build up that hasn't bonded with the griddle surface. They do make a video about this and how to fix it. But that seasoned surface that hasn't bonded will scrap off and is sticky but looked like a properly seasoned surface.
Hello. Quick question. Your video mentions the Blackstone gloves and shows that you can lift your griddle up and turn it around. That is awesome actually, but you mention your griddle can heat up to 600 degrees and when I looked at them they are rated to 500 degrees. I was just curious about that. Could you help? Hello Todd, just got mine, a 36". Wanted to ask, since I didn't scroll down the 100s of comments. I live in PA and I'm sure you know about the cold weather and the months we go with no griddling/barbecues. In this no cook time in those cold months, what do you recommend for maintaining the Blackstone? Season it and cover it, let it be or fire that baby up every once in awhile and season it?
Can I use homemade lard for seasoning?
Do you wash the top and bottom with hot soapy water before you season it because the bottom is pretty sticky
Nice video, i used my griddle 1 or 2 times a month, i should season it every time i used it or how often i have to do it???
God bless!
Thanks Blackstone and Todd I will move my griddle to the shed. Looking forward when you come back home. Go Pens
More you cook on it better it gets
@@BlackstoneGriddles what does the wax paper do?
Hey Todd, I know another oil question lol, is avacado oil to high of a smoke point for seasoning or should it be fine?
Great question
Does anyone know if you HAVE to cook something right after the first time seasoning?.
So is it safe to cook over that paste once I'm done seasoning?
Yes
Do I have to use the ignitor for each dial?
Yes
So it’s telling you to clean it with hot soapy water before you season it do you do this to the bottom too because it’s sticky thank you
This was extremely helpful and followed it for seasoning my griddle! Very clear and helpful.
Todd, I have seen a few videos where people suggest sanding the griddle cooktop before seasoning it and this helps make the top smoother and then they say it uses less oil for cooking . What is your thinking on this ?
So after you season it real good, and you cook some bacon and eggs or what ever, how do you clean your grill when you are done cooking on it?
How well does the Seasoning stand up to 100% Humidity every night from the beginning of May till late October?
Good. Have to add layer of oil after cooking and cleaning it is done each use
NOTE! The Blackstone seasoning stuff strips the orange and white paint RIGHT off the front control panel with just a touch when the panel is hot (burners are on)!!!
Good to know
it wipes off no matter what seasoning you use... mine wiped off with bacon grease
Im sorry I couldn't afford the blackstone so i got on off brand! Expert grill pioneer. Im assuming its the seasoning process?
Some people have said never turn on high, it will warp the griddle?
Question out of the blue. How o I keep my propane tank from freezing ? My problem is when it freezes it doesn't push enough propane to keep my griddle top hot
Hi Todd, I'm looking to purchase the 36" Griddle w/ air fryer. Am I able to connect to my natural gas line and or do you recommend?
I've cooked 3x on mine when I got it , is it to late for seasoning ?
Great how to video!! You explained everything very well!! 👍💛 I'll have to check out the new conditioner, maybe give it a coat with that as a winterizer ❄
I thought it was very easy to season the griddle, easier than doing a cast iron pan 🙂
I used grape seed oil to first season mine.
That was exactly what I cooked on my griddle the first time, hashbrowns, sausage & eggs🍳. The next thing I cooked was 🥓 bacon. 😊🙂
When I re Season it with oil to put away and covering it back will it prevent from rusting?
I got a 28 inch blackstone adventure ready griddle . I have had issues with trying to find a lid for it. A tarp isn’t working. I live in Ohio where you never know what kinda weather we’re getting
Great tutorial!
Would I or should I wash with soap and water before seasoning?
So how did you deal with the melted microfiber? I was using those old t shirt rags from lowes to season and apparently some shirts were not cotton. A portion of one melted on the griddle 😢
Thanks for this video Todd. I will be getting that balckstone griddle seasoning.
Good Choice!
After we finish cooking and re seasoning to put away , how do I keep from rusting when storaging it?
Cant wait. The 36" with air fryer will be hitting my patio soon. My 17" for camping has been awesome, but time to step it up for home.
You’re gonna love the air fryer! It’s awesome as a dual purpose cooking item appliance.
@@kevincameron8437 Oh yeah. Got is 2 weeks ago and LOVE it. Been using it not stop.
@@livingidoutdoors941 has it rusted yet? I just got a pro series 28inch and have heard a lot of these will rust pretty fast
@@richfortin08 not even a little. I have been using the 17' for years camping and never had an issue. I use my 36' several times a week. If they are properly seasoned from the start you should never have an issue. Just pulled my 17" out of the trailer after 5 months and no rust whatsoever.
Does it matter the cloth or towel I use. Any suggestions
I did 5 bottles of seasoning took me all day do i need more
5 bottles? That’s way too much.
Really good video T.O. Double D! I appreciate all your pro tips and what’s not in the instruction manual. You always have to figure out what works best for you and your new product.
Great video
How often do I need to season this? After every use? Or once a season?
This should be done at the factory
A long I always have oil on it should be ok?
Hello. Quick question. Your video mentions the Blackstone gloves and shows that you can lift your griddle up and turn it around. That is awesome actually, but you mention your griddle can heat up to 600 degrees and when I looked at them they are rated to 500 degrees. I was just curious about that. Could you help? Thank you and that’s a great video.
Hi James. Every griddle is different. Many of the models(such as 36" Pro, 36" Air Fryer Combo easily go well above 600 degrees).
@@praisehisawesomename my corners are not black at all! Like way out. Am I not letting it bake in long enough before I put the next layer of the seasoning on?!
You obviously have to use common sense and move quickly. If you're going to pick up the griddle plate, there's not much time to spare. Lol. Move quickly. Do it at your own risk. OK.
If you're a Leary about picking up something that hot, absolutely do not do it.
Do you season it before every use or here and there??
Just got mine..excited to use it...good video...
after seasoning can i just start cooking? and how often do i have to condition or season it?
Do you have to season the griddle after every cleaning?
No.
