@@9idk.com3bing That's a great questions I don't really know. Here is what wikipedia said : A griddle is a cooking device consisting of a broad flat surface heated by gas, electricity, wood, or coal.

Frankly, this alone makes me trust your observations a lot more than a long list of credentials that some other chefs might have. This tells me that you pay attention to details. Hello rotten Johnny/Johnny rotten/ Buckeye neighbor from Pataskala. Just bought my first blackstone 36 flatop, well misses clause bought it for me. Just watched your top 10 video. Loved it can't wait to get started. You were very helpful, will tune in for more of your videos. Thanks chet!
Hey Chet congrats on the new griddle! That's cool you're in Pataskala, I grew up in Pickerington. That's a very nice gift from the wife sounds like you got a good one. We actually got warm enough weather to use it just need this rain to stop. Let me know if you have any questions and Go Bucks tonight!
Johnny, -excellent videos! As a new Blackstone 30" Culinary owner, I figured I should learn how to use the thing. From what I've seen so far on UA-cam, you have the most plainspoken, no drama, informative and complete videos on griddle cooking. Some video producers concentrate more on being comedians and goofing around. I already purchased your E-Book, but wanted to send along $25 (not $2, $10 or $50) to encourage your continued production and video efforts. Using it for beer would be appropriate, also. Let me know!
Hello Charles, THank you so much for the kind words and congratulations on your new griddle. I'm so glad that you find my videos helpful and plainspoken. I try to be as informative as possible while also putting in a little bit of personality but I don't want to over do it and it sounds like I am not. Also thanks for purchasing the e-Book that really means a lot to me and I hope it is helpful for you. I put everything I know in there and really just wanted it to be a good resource for griddle owners. As for the money thank you that is very generous but I don't have a tip jar or anything so I don't know how to do it and it is not necesarry. If I ever do set up something like that I willl let you know. I really appreciate you offering to support the channel and I'm so glad you are enjoying it.
Hi Neighbor! You're getting a Blackstone this Friday heck ya congratulations! I don't know if you care about football or not but if your watching the buckeyes at noon on Saturday you should try the sausage scramble out that morning before the game. It's super easy and you can make a lot depending on how many your feeding. Also if you want you can grab 6inch tortillas and people can make there own breakfast tacos. I loved in German Village for a year after I graduated OSU it's so beautiful down there. I was about 6 houses down from sycamore cafe on 6th. Good times and a lot of sausage my from Schmidt's.
Aside from the seasoning/cleaning videos out there, this is the best griddle advice video I have ever seen. I just got a Blackstone for Father’s Day and will certainly make these mistakes. Maybe. Probably.
Hey Brian thanks so much. I'm glad you found it helpful. Ya you might make some of them but hopefully this prevents some others. Melting a bottle is almost a guarantee lol. You're not a true griddle owner until you've lost a few bottles haha. Thanks for watching.
I'm live in Columbus and I'm about to replace our grill for a griddle. Two of my neighbors have one and I'm pretty pumped to get one. Thanks for the video!
Hey fellow Cbus native. That's cool congrats on the decision to get a griddle I hope you love it as much as I love mine. Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching.
@@JohnnyBrunet Yeah man I have been going back and forth on a 2 burner or 4 burner. Pretty sure I'm going with the 4 burner. The TSC over here on W Broad St sells them. I'll probably check out more of your videos and others as time goes on. Take care.
Bought a Camp Chef a few months ago and I love it, you can take the griddle off and use it like a regular grill. I followed the instructions but about the third time I used it the top warped. Not much but enough that the oil would run to one side. I put a level on the top and took a picture to send to CC, they had no issue and sent a new top to me. Good companies always stand behind their products.
I always like how calm you present yourself. And practical !. Only and just what you need. And you improvise !. You always make it work !. I started watching your videos about a year and half ago. And I have much to learn……and a lot was from you sir !. I’m very proud of that !. And happy of every one I ever watched !. Nothing fancy!……..JUST COOK AND HAVE FUN !. Have a good day sir !.
Shout out from Columbus (Grove City) OH! Just bought a Blackstone griddle and excited to give it a try for our Memorial Day cookout! Thanks for the useful tips!
Enjoyed the presentation. Easy going, a little humorous, without being over the top. Common sense stuff, that makes sense when you hear it out loud. Great job!
This is a well done video. Good content, useful tips and a lot of things that people might just forget. Also, pro tip. Not only will the sides get so hot to melt plastic. They'll also get hot enough to set a roll of paper towels on fire. That's fun to walk outside to with your scrambled eggs in a bowl!
Hey Paul thanks for watching and commenting. Wow I've never set paper towels on fire but I could totally see that happening. Thanks for the tip brother.
The probe thermometer that I finally bought a few years ago has massively upped my steak cooking game. Looking like the "cool kids" is so much less important than having a steak cooked perfectly to the desired temperature. Buying the infrared thermometer when I bought my griddle was a no-brainer. Griddle cooking has such a learning curve as it is, why make it harder on yourself by guessing at temperatures?? Oh ... and hello from Delaware, OHIO!!
Hi Pam! I couldn't agree more, I've trained so many cooks in the restaurants that I managed who think that thermometers aren't cool or just want to try to impress people by not using one. All the professional Chefs I've worked with always have one and use it. And there is definitely a learning curve on the griddle I found that out the hard way lol. And Delaware you aren't too far away at all. I love it up there, my wife and I went up pre covid and checked out Staas and Restoration Brew Worxs. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@JohnnyBrunet I've heard that they're starting to call us the "New Short North" because of the restaurant scene. It's really changed in the last 13 years. Looking forward to new videos!
Thanks Mark I totally agree about the side table. The shelves are nice but I really don't put too much on there due to the heat. I appreciate you watching.
Johnny, thanks for putting in the time for this griddle advice. Your recommended products are helpful too. I appreciate how you deliver the information. #goodguy
Couple of tune-up items I use for camping with my griddle - pre cook bacon, I prefer it this way - the on-site finish-off process is a lot quicker and bacon tastes better, is crispier (to me). Second thing - thick garlic toast from the freezer section at my grocery store - toasts great on the griddle and I often make sandwiches using this excellent, thick toast.
Those are great tips thanks for sharing!! Also I too love that thick garlic toast but have never done it on the griddle. I will definitely give it a try.
Oh ya today is Wednesday so I'm assuming you just got your griddle awesome Bubba. Ya the melted bottle is like a badge of honor in my opinion for owning a griddle, pretty much everyone does it. I'm glad your bacon turned out good. Hopefully you got some smash burgers or something good planned for the weekend.
@@JohnnyBrunet Actually I'm gathering my family together on Sunday for Sunday Father's Day smash burgers (the wife is super excited for that one). I've been watching the burger scholer George Motz and coming up with all sorts or simple burgers to make. Everything from the onion burger form Oklahoma, to the Butter burger from Wisconsin. It's gonna be a blast!
@@Einh0ven that sounds like an amazing father's day. I've seen some of George's stuff it's really good. And I've made the onion burger a few times it's delicious. I still haven't done a butter burger but it's on my list.
That's cool Ben, glad the video was helpful. It's a small world, I actually grew up in P town. My parents are still there. Enjoy your new griddle my friend.
One I'd add to the list: if you're shopping for your first griddle, don't be tempted to go with the smaller ones that "should be big enough". I made the mistake of starting with a 28" griddle, and yes a ton of great meals come off it, but another 8+ inches of flattop would make a world of difference.
Ya I totally agree. I have a two burner and I love it, it's also portable which is nice. However it doesn't even compare to the big four burner. The extra space is just so valuable. I always hesitate to say it because I don't want to feel like I'm telling people to spend more money. However it's totally worth the extra cash. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@JohnnyBrunet Yep, go big or go home!😂. Except if you aren’t at home then small is is better than nothing at all. But you get what I mean. Maybe go big at home is more appropriate 😂
We were all set to get the 28”, but after seeing it in person, it would be too low for my 6’ husband, lol. We ended up getting the 30”… it’s wider and higher.
I just got my Blackstone today.... in Upstate NY. LOL I felt like you were talking to me. Okay sure it isn't October but still temperature control is exactly what was on my mind when I clicked on your video. Ya got a new subscriber. Well done. Oh and I moved here from Ohio a few years ago.
Congratulations on the new griddle! That is way too funny about you moving to NY from Ohio. I just totally picked that spot randomly when I was talking as an example. Your actually the second person who's watched this video and told me that. Maybe that means one day I'll leave of Ohio for Upstate as well lol. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. Have a great weekend.
#6 is an argument forever. It really is whatever works for you. I fought the idea of using flaxseed oil forever. Just because people pushed it so hard. I'm a rebel. LOL But, after trying everything with unhappy results. I broke down and got the flaxseed oil. Man, am I glad I did. I don't use it every time. I season the griddle after a good cleaning with the flaxseed. And cleaning I mean using water and making steam then flaxseed. After daily use. I just scrape off real good and leave the cooking oil. I cooked with. But, after a steam cleaning always flaxseed. It's made the griddle like black glass. And nothing sticks to it. It's really weird.
Thank you for this video we just bought a Blackstone and we’re gonna do breakfast on it you explain everything so well and I really appreciate you I will be watching more
Hi Rebecca, first off congratulations on the new griddle! I'm glad you found the video helpful and I appreciate you watching. Breakfast sounds like a great first cook, that's one of my favorite things to make. The sausage scramble is super easy and I'd highly recommend that. Thanks again for watching.
Just picked up a used twice Blackstone e-series 22" with cart from my cousin for $50! Whike I'm a cast-iron purist this was too good of a deal to pass up even if it makes me feel dirty. Subbed to your channel ad you clearly know what you're talking about & are not just pushing Blackstone products. An infrared thermometer is great & just because you may be able to afford a $100 to go with your $600 griddle there is no need as I've compared a $10-15 Harbor Freight (IYKYK) one and they were within a degree or two. An IR thermometer is just a handy tool anyways whether you wrench on your vehicle or what have you. Anyways I'm really looking forward to playing around with this electric griddle & checking out your content. Another great thing about the e-series is RV/trailer camping with electric or I already have a substantial enough power inverter I can run it off my battery bank tailgating, car camping, at the park or during an emergency when power is out. They are a great piece of kit, & besides my big cast iron skillet probably the best $50 I've spent on culinary items.
Since you seem to have it dialed in pretty good, I would love to see a run down of ideal temps you use for common and various foods for best results on the griddle.
Hi Big Fish, I made a video kind of like that a few weeks ago. Hopefully this is what you were looking for. Thanks for watching. ua-cam.com/video/XhdxmvAykqs/v-deo.html
Perfect timing for this video. I just got my Camp Chef FTG600 for Father's Day and only started cooking on it about a week ago. Even though I've been cooking with cast iron for some time now, and have 3 other cookers in my yard, I'm still trying to navigate the learning curve as a first time flat top owner.
Congratulations on the new griddle and happy late father's day. Ya it's got a small learning curve, I still mess up all the time. It's a lot of fun though and I love my Camp Chef. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@@JohnnyBrunet Thanks Johnny. I'm looking forward to lot's of cooks. I made Chicken and Shrimp fried rice last night for the first time. Fun to do and turned out great.
That was a very cool video and very informative. Just picked up the Blackstone and getting ready to prep It for my first cook. Planning to use avocado oil.
Pro tip: parboil your potatoes for a few minutes to soften them up. Then fry them on the griddle (in bacon fat if possible). You'll get crispy outside and soft inside. Delicious
Hey Dus, thanks for watching. I have done this before and you are totally right it gets them perfect. Sometimes I'll just steam them in the microwave which works well too but isn't as good as boiling them. That's totally the way to go.
So, I haven’t tried on the griddle, but on the stovetop I just take mine from soaking in water to frying pan with hot grease. They crisp nicely. I’m going to try this method on the griddle also!
If your analysing your mistakes john then i know your serious about becoming a griddle meister. Keep going dude, every time you turn your griddle on is a new experience for you.❤️👍
Thanks chef Allen, I appreciate the support and encouragement. I always feel like there's more to learn in any cooking, that's what makes it so much fun ya know. Have a good one brother.
Hey Jeffrey, ya I know all about that weather stuff here in Columbus too. Not as bad though because we don't have the lake. Congrats on the new griddle I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Have a good one and thanks for watching.
After years of smoking and grilling it’s hard to get creative. My wife literally shocked me with a new Blackstone griddle. Your advice is overwhelming received and I’m now very comfortable cooking on it since I have the temps dialed in. Thanks again
Congratulations on the new griddle! That's a very nice gift from your wife. I'm so glad that my advice has been helpful. Ya once you get the temps dialed in it becomes a lot easier and more fun. Thanks so much for watching.
Haha that's funny what are the odds. I should have had you do a temp check now of what medium is and I could do one in June if what medium was. I bet it's beautiful up there this time of year, good griddln' weather. Thanks so much for watching.
Well, I’ve done all of these! I’ve turned bottles into modern art. I do cook way too hot. Not sure what temp is best for different foods? I need a thermometer for sure. Still love cooking outside tho 😁getting used to black eggs!
I hear ya Steven it's hard not to do all of these when you first get a griddle. And I also just love cooking outside it feel so much more fun. And I don't get grease all over my kitchen. I actually just released a video about what temps to cook out I'll link it here. ua-cam.com/video/XhdxmvAykqs/v-deo.html
Hey man how's it going? Congrats on the Blackstone. Ya I bet it was probably weird scrolling over the video and being like "holy crap I went to school y with him" hahaha.
I've had my Blackstone for about 4 years now, I've always preheated it on high. I just don't leave it and walk away. Never had a problem, when I reach my temp I turn it down to low. I cook most of my food on low using this method. My food always turns out great. I also use a meat temp so I always know the temp of my meats. The rest I eye ball it. I'm in Missouri.
Nice I say whatever works ya know. My way definitely isn't the only way. 4 years you're a seasoned pro by now. Thanks for your suggestions for and for watching.
I mean the official Blackstone seasoning guide says to crank the heat to high for like an hour during the seasoning process... I'd hope they aren't intentionally screwing people over
I was just looking through comments about this point. The Blackstone griddle manual says to season on high heat so I was a little worried when I saw that you said it could warp.
@@amyblucker7745 yes do season with high heat. If it wraps let it cool down, it will go back to normal, sometimes it warps, but most times it will not. Use high heat let it burn off the oil you wipe on, repeat 4 or 5 times, cook on it. If it warps let it cool down. Nothing to it.
Great tips. I may have heard one or all of them at one time or another but forgot them, so good refresher. It may also be that I heard them from my Dad and since I knew more then he did I wasn't paying attention.
Enjoyed the video, and yes, I have experienced many of these “happy accidents” myself. Especially melting stuff. Bottles, handles on utensils, bowls. You name it. And yes, I have had my flat top (FTG600) warp. Four or five times. It has always flattened back out after it heats back up, but last time it happened I was cooking smash burgers. 🤷♂️. I will be calling Camp Chef and find out what I am doing wrong, or if there is a problem with my flat top. Cheers!
Hey Bryan! Thanks for watching, ya I've seen a lot of people's warp and then go back to regular. But I've also seen where it just stayed warped and they had to contact Camp Chef. I had a very good experience with Camp Chef Customer service when mine arrived dented so hopefully they help you out quickly. Also there is a Camp Chef Griddle Facebook group if you are not a member already. There are a lot of people in there who had the exact same thing happen to them that happened to you. It might be a good resource for you. I appreciate the comment, cheers!
@@JohnnyBrunet I discovered that half the welds on the diffuser plate had failed. Called Camp Chef and they promptly sent me a new griddle top. So kudos to their customer service. Hopefully won’t have a repeat experience with this one.
Great advice and tips for the griddle. Even thought I have an indoor electric griddle most of this translates to my griddle. The E-series has a digital temp screen but the infrared thermometer is real useful in knowing actual temps on the griddle. Keep on griddling.
That's awesome! It sounds like you have a really nice set up I can't wait to have an outdoor kitchen one day. I'm sure you'll do great on your griddle just get that infrared thermometer and watch your temperature that's the biggest thing. Also my wife and eye went to Mackinac VC Island right at after we got engaged so it hold sentimental value to us, we really loved it there. Thanks so much for watching.
Awesome man I'm glad you've had a good first month. Thanks for always watching and commenting on a lot of the videos, I really appreciate it. Watch out for the squirrels around your griddle lol!
Very informative video. I do have to question that you can actually warp the griddle top. I would think the makers would not make the burners get it hot enough to do that. I also think that steak is great if you cook it on a surface over 500 degrees.
Hey thanks for watching the video. Yes I agree that you can sear a steak over 500 especially if you want that nice sear on the outside and rare in the middle. I don't usually go that high but that's my preference so I should have said that. As for warping I've just seen a ton of Posts on the Camp Chef Griddle Facebook group where this has happened. Usually they don't have all 4 burners on though. So one side is hot and the other is cold leading to warping. Thanks for commenting.
@@ericgeorgetruckgrilling ya I agree with that. It's intended to be outdoors so it's hard for them to operate like the commercial ones which are indoors. You have a very good point.

You are welcome Sara. Congratulations on the new griddle! Yes I agree it's such a great family experience. Especially for something like breakfast on a nice summer morning. Nothing better than making some pancakes for your kids in the backyard. Thanks for watching and commenting. Keep on Griddln'

Hey Joe thanks so much for watching and for the compliment. Ya I feel like "learned the hard way" is the story of my life hahaha. I appreciate you checking out my video brother.
Hi, I just wanna ask you about flat top griddles. Can I season my griddle twice? I already seasoned it once but I noticed that everything I cook still sticks to the top. I Just used it once for testing. Thanks
Hi Micah, yes you can season it twice. Some peopleseason it 3 times at first to get a nice non stick surface. I would just make sure you use as thin amount of oil as possible then burn it all off. After that when you're cooking don't be scared to use a little more oil. I hope this works out and was helpful for you. Let me know if you have any more questions.
Hey Neal, thanks so much I appreciate you checking out the video. Ya I thought it might be a good idea since I've made so many mistakes hopefully people can learn from them. I love your channel and checked out your website too good stuff man. Thanks for stopping by, let me know if you ever want to do like a Griddle Collaboration or something. I did the hot dog colab put on by Mr. Homeowner earlier this year and it was a lot of fun.
@@JohnnyBrunet absolutely. Sounds great. Just told my wife ill cook and he can do his famous voice over. No just kidding on that but a collaboration would be great. Any ideas.
@@TheFlatTopKing hahahaha I don't know about famous. I already did a video about a $20 cookout but I am very cheap so I do like doing things like that. Maybe $10-$20 to spend on a griddle breakfast, what would you make type of thing. Kind of like a challenge to see how much we could stretch stuff. Or like our favorite omelets might be fun. I'm up to almost anything as long as it's on the griddle.
Some good info, but the type of oil for seasoning DOES matter. There are many good options (grapeseed, avocado, crisco, maybe vegetable oil) but DON'T use olive oil. the flash point is way too low. It is not good for seasoning. There is actual science going on here, and oil type does matter. Don't use olive oil, don't use bacon fat. Grapeseed and avocado are best.
Thanks, this is a very good point. I should have specified between cooking and seasoning. When seasoning I agree a higher smoke point is better. And since making this video I've moved over to mainly cooking with avocado oil due to the high smoke point. Thank you for correcting my mistake and for watching.

Take care.
@@clineshaunt ya I like the space of a four burner. I've never been in that TSC, I need to check it out.
Great tips, I never thought about the warping of the griddle due to high heat on cold steel. I always crank it to high to warm it up, thanks!
You're welcome thanks for watching. I preheat on medium and it still gets to temp in about 10-15. Maybe give that a try. Have a good one brother.
Just got a griddle and I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel... You're a beer drinker like me just trying to make some tasty buzz food
Congratulations on the new griddle Josh and thanks for watching. Ya drinking beer and cooking on the griddle is how I spend most of my weekends.
Hey Rick thanks for commenting and watching. Ya they were top notch with me when mine arrived dented. I would recommend Camp Chef to anyone.
I always like how calm you present yourself. And practical !. Only and just what you need. And you improvise !. You always make it work !. I started watching your videos about a year and half ago. Hey congrats on the new griddle! I'm glad you liked the video and hopefully it was helpful.
This is probably the best griddling advice video on YT
Thanks mam I appreciate that.

Great advice. I appreciate the humor and that you keep it level instead of trying to push products on viewers. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful and honest. That was my goal. Thanks for watching.
Words to live by. I have the tee shirt on most of them. Keep up the good work.

#4 Was/Is the MOST important piece of advice EVER! 👍
Ya I definitely learned that one the hard way 😂😂
All excellent tips... I might add it's handy to have a small side table so you don't melt things on the side tables.
Thanks Mark I totally agree about the side table. The shelves are nice but I really don't put too much on there due to the heat. I appreciate you watching.
Johnny, thanks for putting in the time for this griddle advice. Your recommended products are helpful too. I appreciate how you deliver the information. #goodguy
My pleasure!
Thanks!
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
and thank you so much for the super thanks! This is the first one I have ever received!
Day 1 hour 1, of using my griddle. Melted my Squeeze bottle during the first season.
Hour 1.5... the best freaking bacon I've ever made 😋😍
Oh ya today is Wednesday so I'm assuming you just got your griddle awesome Bubba.
I’m in Pickerington and I just bought a blackstone. Thanks for giving real tips. I was worried it was going to be like: preseason the griddle. 😂
I have been told this by friends with flattop griddles.. definitely taking their advice
@@JohnnyBrunet Yep, go big or go home!😂. Except if you aren’t at home then small is is better than nothing at all. But you get what I mean. Maybe go big at home is more appropriate 😂
I started with 22 and regretted. Now have 36
We were all set to get the 28”, but after seeing it in person, it would be too low for my 6’ husband, lol.
Thanks for sharing, ya I've heard good things about flax seed I need to give it a try. And thanks for watching too.
Funny, concise, and extremely useful. Great video Johnny
Thanks Fruge I'm glad you liked it.

Awesome! Congrats on your new griddle!

🤣🤣🤣
Your welcome Papo, congratulations on the new griddle!
