GIANT DOG BREEDS FOR BEGINNERS

- Опубліковано 26 лип 2024
- A giant dog breed is a breed of dog of gigantic proportions, sometimes described as a breed whose weight exceeds 45 kilograms (99 lb). Breeds sometimes described as giant breeds include the Great Dane, Newfoundland, St. Bernard and Irish Wolfhound. These breeds have seen a marked increase in their size since the 19th century as a result of selective breeding.
Dog breeds described as giants tend to have more health problems than smaller dogs and have the shortest life expectancy of all dog breeds.

Many years ago, I was walking my Bernese Mountain Dog puppy of a few months when 2 large Dobermans broke free from their yard and began circling my puppy and me. They were snarling and snapping at us, yet my puppy stayed in front of me, head down like he would attack back. Luckily the owners came out, but I still marvel how that little guy put himself in front of me in a protective mode. Sadly, he was very short lived - 5 years from a genetic problem. Loved that dog.
These breeders should be as concerned with health and lifespan as they are with physical conformity
Man I hate that. I can stand getting a fantastic dog like yours and they end up dying early. The last few dogs I have bought haven't had papers. I know papers don't mean a whole lot but it can sometimes weed out genetic problems. Have a Great Pyrenees right now we got for our toddler last X Mas and he's awesome. I just hope he doesn't have genetic or any real health problems. I give him vitamins and plenty of exercise. He's almost one year old and already 110 to 120 pounds, strong, and intelligent not to mention protective and gentle w our baby. He will probably end up being 140 to 160 pounds. Great Pyrenees keep growing for about 2 years. They are fantastic animals
I have 2 saint bernards, one male and one female. They are such loving caring dogs with hearts of gold. My male even held a bear at bay in our front yard when I had him out for a walk a few years ago so we could slowly walk backwards to our house to safety.
❤hi from Switzerland 🇨🇭 Wonderful dogs
How are they with summer time heat?
@@kingmebrown1059 they do well,I keep my house pretty cool in the summer, when I take them out side I make sure they can lay in the shade and give the lots of water n a kiddie pool to lay in if they want to. Lol.
@@christopherwescott551 THANK you, I saw the movie Beethoven and I have wanted one of those dogs ever since.
@@kingmebrown1059 yes, they have been one of my favorite dogs senceci was a kid.
My Bernese Mountain Dog, his name is Morgan, is 11 years old this year! He's the sweetest dog ever ❤️️ We've been so lucky to still have him after this many years 😊
Great compilation of breeds Zeke, thanks a lot.
Great video! Would love to see a similar one on smaller dog breeds for beginners
I’ve owned st Bernard’s for years now and I absolutely love the breed. They can be hard work when they’re adolescents. Head strong and stubborn. But they are beautiful and loving.
I have a Saint Bernard and adopted an English Mastiff puppy recently, the temperament of the Mastiff seems to be similar to the Saint, gentle easy going and playful
Awesome video and very interesting point of view! I'm interested in the Bullmastiff, and planning to acquire one in the near future.
I love your show. Just wondering if or when you are going to do a Documentary on the Banddog?
Great list
I own a English Mastiff and believe it should’ve made the list cause unlike the bullmastiff it’s way more chill then
Yeah a working breed and guard dog but man the chill factor is extreme and most accomplished in English Mastiffs
Mines 5 months and has energy for the time being but most of his time he rather sleep.
I think personally all giant breeds needs motivation to get up and go. But I love the list, love the channel
Very good vid 👍😊
I knew the Newfie would be on this list!
I can't wait for an update on the Canis panther
Saint Bernards are such good dogs. My male is so caring and loving. I definitely agree!
I house-sat a family that owned 2 Bernese Mountain dogs (and some berner-poodle mix puppies) and oh my god. These dogs... Were so awesome. They were incredibly sweet and very gentle. However, I had the realization that if someone broke into the house, I would be dead. Those dogs didn't have a mean bone in their body and I would be toast. 😂
I'm surprised he didn't mention a great dane
I have a 5 years old brown newfie. Such a sweet dog. Gentle and amazing temperament.
i love the intro just bouncing around 😂😍😍
Good choices.
I had a GSD growing up and my parents rescued a golden retriever after she passed away. Both were more difficult than the St Bernard I have now, who is the smartest and sweetest combining the sweetness of the golden and the brains of the shepherd. She is the most calm too, having no problem watching you watch tv. I’d take a Saint over any other dog.
4th Great Dane! Love them!
Great channel✌🏻❤️🇮🇳
great job Zeke, I have a Bernese cross St Bernard cross Ridgeback cross Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, she is 1 year old, and she shares many of the qualities of the dogs you've named. I think your list was inspired
Wow! Extremely cool mix😍
I love the bull mastiff!
Nice
Zeke this is a Gr-8 list..I think the Berner is the best large breed, for a 1st.time large breed owner. The Greater Swiss Mountain dog should also be considered for a 1st. time large breed owner who doesn't want a dog with all that fur.I am a Rottweiler lover + owner, but if I had a choice from this list I would go with the Bullmastiff as well.
My now 150 lb dog, lives with cat's and he has mad respect for the fur wrapped teeth and claws that are cat's.
On a road trip we stopped for lunch and while waiting for food to come I took Newt for a walk. Not even registering the thirty foot waving cat statue in front of the putt putt golf course next to the drive-in burger joint. Newt did, and in spite of both a head halter and a chest harness, he came extremely close to dragging me in to four lanes of heavy traffic. And he was smaller than he is now, I was literally in the gutter blocking him and he almost took us both into the cars doing about forty fifty mph. Took everything for me to get him back to the car, while everyone watched and laughed or just ignored the whole situation.
Newt's well trained and has been exposed to many situations, but you never know what may cause a uncontrolled panic run and with a giant pupper this can be dangerous.
No idea how to deal other than being very aware of the environment and my dog when in a strange environment
I have a 12 week old Mastador puppy who loves people. He will soon start an obedience course. By the time he starts he will know the basics, sit, lay, stay and come. He is already over 30 lbs.
I've had doggos all my life. I love my giant pupper 150 lbs of goofy love. Boxer mastiff mix. Newt Scamander is my baby boy 💖💕♥️
I like BIG dogs. But a lot of large breeds like Irish Wolfhounds - my favorite - have woefully short lifespans. My dogs are part of my family. Whenever I lose one I loose a part of me.
Agreed. We are a Great Dane family, and our first rescue, Rudy, is 9 now. Really makes me sad knowing that his day is slowly approaching. He’s 160 pound Loverdoodle with a white beard and white around his eyes…:(
@@ElkinsEric 😢❤🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
@@ElkinsEricI understand. But i also feel the love, devotion and just sheer enjoyment factor that comes with Dane ownership far outweighs the 'relativly' short life span.Ours lived till 11(Lola)
An utterly heartbreaking loses to us and we now have a wonderful."wee" 14 week old boy Dutch, you just have to enjoy every moment you have with them😀give Rudy a big cuddle from us👍
@@GG-ml3vr we also have 2 female Danes, Cupcake and Deuce, so it’ll lessen the blow somewhat, but I still dread the day “daddy’s big boy” doesn’t meet me at the door after work…
I would have figured out a way to include the Irish wolfhound.
I would have chosen the Greater Swiss over the Bernese mountain dog
Is it feasible for your team to do a video on Estrela Mountain dogs?
Ackbosh, and komondor are two great LGD. I own a mix of both.
Do you have any dogo episodes? Dogo Argentinos are amazing...great with kids too!
There are several up, working on getting some more though.
I had a Leonberger as my first dog. She was great! But they do have a protective streak, not just guarding but actually lounging. Normally won't bite, but will jump on/try to push away what they consider a threath. And so my dog actually managed to bend down and break the fence in the backyard because she jumped on it whenever she heard "suspicious sounds", especially after dark. Also very important for the Leonberger, and possible Newfoundlands - they need water training! they are water rescue dogs, but without training as puppies, they are basically a fatal accident waiting to happen. I had to to have my dog leashed at all times nearby water, as she would try to climb on top of swimmers to "reascue" them, and basically would have drowned someone
I had two mastiffs. Any of the dogs on your list would be the ones for me. .. Cheers to you ..
I’ve had a Saint Bernard I currently own 2 Great Danes I love large dogs
Have you found any solid Swiss Mountaindog breeders to do a video on? Would love to see them on Dogumentary!
Yes I have, filming next month!
Dogumentary TV I was wondering when the Swissies would make it on the channel. They are the best
@@DogumentaryTV can't wait!
My list is similar:
5. Landseer (Newfoundland)
4. English Mastiff
3. Great Dane
2. St. Bernard (short coat), had one
1. Bullmastiff
Nice list.
the newfoundland is my dream breed I hope to own one someday you should do a video about the broholmer a rare breed of mastiff
Great Danes ftw! They are the best Loverdoodles ever!
Interesting, barring the white markings Boris has, my Saint x Anatolian cross looks very much like a Leonberger
Have read that Rottweilers are believed to have some lineage from the Bermese Mountain dog. Rotties also have a shorter live term.
the polish tatra sheepdog is also a good dog for beginners
Any body have tips on keeping my bloodhounds ear clean...that's my biggest struggle...he has a habit of shoving his whole face in his water bowl when he drinks then playing I the dirt
st Bernards can be really aggressive , if grown guarding a property and not getting socializing training . Big males in particular .
First one broski
Im getting a presa
Would you ever make a video for guard dogs for beginners? Do you have one already? Are there any guard dogs for beginners? I'm considering a Cane Corso because I'm in love with them research wise but I've never been around a dominant, giant, guard breed before, my fiancee has, but not me.
Other dogs I'm considering:
Rottweilers
German shepherds
Dobermans
Been seriously contemplating getting a cane corso myself! Would love a response from Zeke here if he gets the chance. His content is consistently fantastic.
I don't have experience with cane corsos but my mates mum (vet tech?) Says they're not good beginner breeds overall, my dad has 2 (dogos most likely but might be american Scott bulldogs, may even be 1 each) and the one is really nasty with adults she doesn't know. I however have a lot of experience with rottweilers and they're a relatively amazing beginner breed. Other than rotties my nans GSD's were good but one was a bit dodgy with adults she didn't know as well and my auntie loves her doberman but I haven't met him so can't say first hand. I had a French mastiff when I was a child and he wasn't too much but he was very strong so if he did become aggressive or something it would be a massive struggle, other than that I could only recommend friendly dogs with a large size as a deterrent more than anything else
Get a Doberman don’t have one but every dobie I’ve met has been so nice my neighbor had 2 in New Hampshire when I was younger
Guard dogs are not for beginners, at all. Inexperience is what can make these dogs dangerous, and the dog will pay the price for your stupidity. So many of these dogs get put down because they end up in the hands of the wrong people.
Does anyone know what breed the two black dogs are at the start of the video ?
Giant Schnauzer
I have a Great Pyrenees that I dearly love. She is well trained but, it took me almost two years to get her to want to do what I wanted to do. That was the secret! However, I have lived with large dogs of several breeds, including a wolf hybrid for many years. I would not recommend the Pyrenees for new and inexperienced dog owners nor for those who live without running room for the dog!
Great Pyrenees dogs are great as well but they do take a firm foundation in basic obedience and require much more living space.
Yo I'd say in no particular order newfoundlands, irish wolfhound, bernese mountain dog, english mastiff, and st bernard. I'd be scared if a first time dog owner had a bull mastiff lol, not going near that guy. Same for even bernards, they have some aggression in many lines now 😶
I have a friend who breeds and shows Saint Bernards. They shouldn't when well-bred have any human aggression.
@@kathleenbillett4723 Of course, but bybs will do that to a breed so it's important to be careful 😄
First dog I got on my own was a central Asian shepherd. Best choice I ever made.
Wow, I’m impressed. A CAS generally is not a first choice and can require a very specific type of owner. I live in an urban environment and am doing some serious soul searching about this breed. Love everything about them BUT not sure it fits. I’m happy it worked out so well for you.
Bull mastiffs are great but you have to train them, and you have to make sure you figure a way to motivate them, food and treats are not enough, they will flop and not move if they don’t feel like training, so you have to switch it up and keep them excited and guessing. Others you get the old English flop. 😂
I got my first dog 50 years ago
So
I couldn’t see the first black dogs breed. Was it a black Russia terrier or bouvier?
Giant schnauzer
I'm glad you didn't put great pyrenees on this list. Great dogs, but they take a lot of patience and loving firmness. They bark a lot and the things that make them so great can also be the same things that people get rid of them for. They became a popular breed and many ended up homeless because people didn't do their homework. A newfie would be an excellent alternative for an inexperienced dog owner who may be thinking about a pyrenees. A lot of the same qualities people are looking for but are at easier to deal with and they don't bark that much. My male Pyrenees is passed out snoring on my legs right now. Awesome dogs, just make sure you do your research and know what you are getting into. That goes with any breed, even more so for large breeds. They are tough to re-home because of their size. That's how I got both of mine.
I don’t disagree with your list, but better for new owners doesn’t mean people shouldn’t do their research. Shedding, drooling, grooming and climate considerations should be understood for this group. That being said, these are all awesome dogs and I wouldn’t hesitate to own any one of them.
I have a two year old male intact. My guy has a BIG prey instinct,as well as lots of energy. They need early consistent training. And yes I’ve found because he’s intact other dogs tend to growl at him😑
My female so far is much easier to train and manage!
Where is the Pyrenean Mountain Dog?
Where are the giant dogs?
Not all Saints are gentle giants.
Large breed dogs are not for novice owners. IMO. Especially bullmastiffs. Have to really disagree on this video.
English Mastiff should be on this list…..
THE GREAT PYRENEES RULES THE EARTH!!!!!!!
Super Shaky Racky intro there
U talk too much
