From Side Hustle to Six Figures: My Journey with DIY Epoxy Flooring
    Cost Breakdown:
Phase 1: Concrete patching and grinding. I meticulously break down the project into distinct steps, assigning a cost per square foot for each phase, which greatly aids in finalizing the deal. By thoroughly explaining the purpose behind each phase, I ensure the customer comprehends the allocation of funds and the extent of labor required for every step.
Phase 2: Coating application includes applying the moisture seal epoxy primer and colored flake, followed by scraping off any loose flake, and finally applying the polyaspartic topcoat. This final step will effectively complete the project. When referring to my larger floor, I will now break down the quote for better understanding.
    48’ x 29’ = 1,392 square feet
    Phase 1: Concrete Prep
Floor Patch cracks and expansion joints 163 linear feet @ $3.00 a linear foot = $489.00
Clean oil stains, diamond grind & clean concrete slab (1,392 sqft.) @ $2.00 a square foot = $2,784.00
    Phase 2: Floor Coating Application
    Apply Moisture Seal Epoxy Primer & Colored Flake (1,392 sqft.) @ 2.50 a square foot = $3,480.00
    Scrape lose flake & Apply Polyaspartic Topcoat w/ Non-skid (1,392 sqft.) @ $1.50 a square foot = $2,088.00
    Total Invoice = $8,842.00
The Stone Coat Epoxy Flake Flooring system requires materials at a cost of $1.50 per square foot. That totals to $2,088 for the materials from Stone Coat. Additionally, sundries, such as rollers, magic trowels, epoxy spiked shoes, and miscellaneous hand tools, are needed to complete the job. For a floor of this size, an estimated cost of $150-250 is reasonable.
To prepare the flooring, I rented the walk-behind concrete grinder and a large HEPA vacuum from Sun Belt Flooring Solutions Rental yard. They offer professional-grade flooring prep equipment for rent in most cities. With the walk-behind concrete grinder, you can prepare concrete for epoxy at a rate of 600-900 square feet per hour. Alternatively, smaller walk-behind diamond concrete grinders available at local rental shops grind at a rate of 200-300 square feet per hour. This makes renting a large grinder more cost-effective than purchasing one outright.
For my project, I paid $1,100 for a 2-day rental of the professional grinder and vacuum. Since I had multiple floor projects scheduled, I was able to split this cost among them, resulting in a grinder cost of only $366 per job.
Labor for the job is my last major expense. I pay my guys $25 a hour.
    Day 1 - Crack Patch - 3 hours
    Day 2 - Grinding and Cleaning - 6 hours
Day 3 - Apply Moisture Seal and Flake - 4 hours
Day 4 - Scrape, Clean and Apply Topcoat - 4 hours
    Day 5 - Walkthrough, jobsite cleanup - 1 hour
Total labor 18 hours X Two workers = 36 hours @ $25/hr. = $900 in labor for this job only
    Total Cost = $3,504.00
    Invoice = $8,842.00
    Profit = $5,338.00

This was a very informative video. I'm a truck driver and I'm thinking about getting out of it. I did construction for a while and I've been driving a truck for 17 years and I love messing with this epoxy. I would love to start my own business during garage floors and this video was awesome! Thanks man!

The cost breakdown is very helpful to me. Im not a "buisiness" man. Over the last 2 or 3 years ive been learning the ins and outs or epoxy. At the same time learning the ins and outs of business. It can be overwhelming at times. All this while still working full time as an ambulance dispatcher. Whew... keep up the great videos Mitch. Love the Stone Coat family!

I’m with Gina! I’ve wanted to start a business like this for a very long time! But just like Gina, I can’t afford it either. I’m a single mom, dealing with a dead beat dad/ex-husband that beat me for 28 years and REFUSES to pay child support. I’d love to leave a legacy that I built for my children and grandchildren. Let me know if you find out anything please 🙏🙏. Thank you for all of your videos, instruction, creative, genius, and above all your support!

I also was wondering when you do the job and you're leaving for the even ing do you leave the garage door up just a little bit because you can't close it because the floor would be wet

Get a 24" drywall taping knife and screw it onto a 4' pole. Works WAY better than that little scraper youre using!
Theyre less than $40 on the jungle site.

Epoxy hardens fast just after mixing with mica powders and metallic color and unable to work for a kitchen counter top for about 32 sft.?
    Outside temp. was below 72F.
1:1 (0.5gal) : (0.5gal) mixed separately before mixing with colors separately in a small cups.
    After researching it's noticed
    exothermic reaction ...
    *Timer
    *Volume
    *Temperature.
What is your advice to avoid the fast hardening when mixing with colors?
    🙏

I have been doing kivthen countwrops by myself for 4 years. I use Micah’s also. You have to work fast. Get the design out quick and know your design before you start. Keep the temp inside at 70 also. Don’t use too much heat. Enough to get the air bubbles out. The regular Stonecoat epoxy gives plenty working time.

I have all the equipment for sale to anyone interested. 2 floor cleaners, 7 scrubbers, a burnisher, a 20kva 3phase generator (diesel block, runs on propane), 12000 w 1 phase generator, 3 grinders, 2 3phase dust collectors, 5 horsepower 3phase air compressor, a shot blaster, scarifier, a few dozen sets of diamonds... also a 1998 isuzu NPR with 14ft bed (brand new tires and a new engine). And that is just the equipment that sells for more than a thousand dollars a piece new, there are a half dozen shop vacs for instance along with tons of other miscelaneous bits and accessories. I can sell everything including the truck for the 30k mentioned in the video.

Your guys deserve more/hour. $450 each while you made $5k?
You could pay them $50/hour and still pocket $4k.
You could pay them $75/hour ($1300 total each) and still pocket.. $3300.
    Just saying.
