  • Here is our review of DiRT 4!
    After all the hype, after ALL that pre-release footage, after all the promotion, it's finally here! DiRT 4 is the latest iteration in Codemasters' storied rally franchise, and after the runaway success of DiRT Rally in sim circles, the question is, does the latest in the series top it, or does it fall back into its old ways?

    I reeeallly hope they add new locations via DLC. It'd be amazing to get Greece or Finland in Dirt 4.
    Definitely agree about the Your Stage controls - width, height and maybe roughness would be nice additions.

    Note: I am aware that I accidentally forgot to address the "Lack of VR" explicitly in the review, and I'm sorry. That is something that is considered as a "Con", and could be included in the "Compatibility With High End Hardware" con, but it should have been addressed in its own section.
    Note: I have released an "Updated Thoughts/2 Weeks Later" video, which addresses some other thoughts I've had in the 2 weeks since DiRT 4 was released, including a revised score: ua-cam.com/video/PBY1T5n1dE4/v-deo.html

      Given the graphics are scaled back from Dirt Rally I really can't see why/how this was omitted.

      Dirt Rally was practically a Indie title, it was funded by early access backers and developed with robust support from the sim racing community. When if first came out there was no retail versions of VR out so it was totally acceptable not launch with it. Today in Mid 2017 Practically all but one serious simulation titles support full VR and native Triple screen support. Codemasters claim to want to address the more serious sim racing commuinity yet they cannot be arsed to support either of the 2 main ways people race, via triples or VR. As for your comment about racing rally if I care so much, I enjoy sim racing, I have a very expensive rig, I want as many titles as possible to support things like FOV, Full wheel calibration, triples, E handbreaks, VR etc .. because these are the things that bring the experience closer to the real thing rather than sitting on a couch pulling accelerate and break triggers

    Bit of a different personal opinion here...
    I am writing this review as a long time sim racer. Therefore, I am going to focus on things like FFB, physics, and graphics performance more than car selection, soundtrack, etc. If you are a keyboard or controller player who enjoys more arcade/action-oriented driving games, this review probably won't be helpful for you.
    If you're a sim racer with a nice racing rig and you enjoyed Dirt Rally a lot (as I did) then be prepared for a huge disappointment in the physics department. You may have heard that you can now select between a gamer handling mode and the sim handling mode. Of course, I went straight for the sim mode, all assists off.
    The problem immediately becomes apparent when you start a rally - even in sim mode, the levels of grip are highly exaggerated to the point where even the RWD vehicles require extreme control inputs to induce controllable slides. The worst of this is represented in the gravel/dirt stages (Australia, Wales, Michigan, and Sweden.) For some reason, the gravel is just hyper-grippy. For example, while trying the Group A Subaru, a nice 4 wheel drift around a hairpin (which works brilliantly in Dirt Rally) results in the car "digging in" immediately and setting you up for a brief oversteer followed by heavy understeer. In many cases, a handbrake input would start a slide but then the car would bog down almost to a *stop* before taking off again.
    The tarmac physics (only the Spain rally is tarmac) are a little better and in *some* ways an improvement over Dirt Rally. The cars feel a little more communicative through FFB and react slightly more naturally to things like weight transfer. However, the grip levels are a little too high once again, requiring relatively heavy and sudden inputs to induce a controllable oversteer or drift in most cars. It's not as much of a mess as gravel is, though.
    The game is also quite a bit more demanding graphically on your CPU/GPU than Dirt Rally. At Ultra settings, my 980 Ti + 3570k @ 4.6ghz running a 1440p Gsync display gets down into the 40s at times in Wales, where the dense forest seems to be an FPS hitter. If I drop down to high it's much better. I don't necessarily count this against the game since it still looks pretty good at High settings, and presumably, there's room to grow as newer and better GPUs come out.
    I know racing sim physics is always a point of contention among sim racing enthusiasts. I've already seen people saying things like "well, it's just different, give it time." In Dirt 4 though, I can say without question the physics model (which was pretty darn good in Dirt Rally) has taken a SERIOUS downturn here. As such I can only leave a negative feedback for now, until such time as Codies takes another crack at it.

      Shane Miner, yes your absolutely right , there's way to much grip ,dirt had it more or less down to a T bit disappointed with this

      I have a full racing rig and absolutely loved Dirt Rally. Immediately I realized Dirt 4 physics are horrifying, with all the weight of the cars and grip levels on the multiple surfaces feeling like a game thats 10 years older than it actually is. Really disappointing since I was excited for a fresh simulation rally game. The wait begins for Dirt Rally 2 now...

    • @ProrokC2
      @ProrokC2 7 років тому +4

      Another review complaining about grip levels, while not considering improved aero, actual weight transfer and weight of the car as a factor in physics. All the cars in D4 are setup in such a way to get understeer, so cars are easier to drive. Setup your cars and be more agressive in your weight transfer to get oversteer. Gravel isn't fucking ice, there is lots of grip to be had there, so is there on tarmac.

    Dirt, Dirt 2, Dirt 3 and Dirt 4 are the main Dirt games Codemasters make their living off. 25% simulator, 75% arcade.
    Dirt Showdown is a demolition derby spinoff. 100% arcade.
    Dirt Rally is a hardcore rally simulator spinoff. 100% simulator.

    Great review William, I've seen other online reviews but you've done the best job at picking out the positive and negatives where others have failed. I already have the PC version preordered and use HE Pro pedals so it looks like I'm going to be fresh out of luck until it's patched. I guess I shouldn't be surprised this is Codemaster after all, they seem to always have difficulty with stuff like monitors and peripherals.

    I think the lessons are literally to help new players. I think its great they've added such a feature, as DiRT Rally just used videos and then said "cool now work it out yourself". I think it's a nice way to help new players along and shouldn't be treated as a large part of the game. No time limits means no pressure and allows you to be gently introduced to rally. You should improve your skill by using "your stage" and increase the length and complexity to better your driving skill imo, not using the lessons.

    What they've failed to realize is that they've grown their fan base round all the wacky game modes and multiplayer fun now they are trying to become a simulator, what I'm scared about is the fact that they've lost a lot of sales making it more likely that's it for the series which I use to love so much

      infinite stage route generator alone is worth buying. So far its amazing . Everytime i generate, its whole new rally stage. Stage looks very very natural just like real life road(elevation,bumps always different). Dirt Rally have 12 fukking stages not counting reversed.

    • @Case_
      @Case_ 7 років тому +11

      Like the guy above mentioned, the stage generator alone will revolutionize the online rallying part of the game. Dirt Rally is now just a hotlap simulator in this regard, dominated by people who learned every inch of the stages to be as quick as possible. That's not what rallying is supposed to be about. I can't wait to enter a daily/weekly/monthly challenge (or a league) where the key to success is the ability to react to the stage and adapt, not to be able to memorize the stage perfectly.

    • @stickkey
      @stickkey 7 років тому +1

      Trololo andy spent $55 to get a stage generator where it randomly mixes the track elements in a game where getting good times and knowing the track is essential. Grow up xD

    • @ji3200
      @ji3200 7 років тому

      it mixes radomly millions of ways so everythime you generate, it always looks different even with bumps and elevation. You should try it and you will find out. Are you happy with Dirt Rally with 12 stages(not counting reversed)?? stage route generator is very good and it doesn't generate like San Francisco road(roller coaster kind of stupid road).

    Tried this game in Steam, refunded. Saying it's "just as harcore as Dirt Rally" is complete bullshit. Group B RWD deathtraps handle like understeery SUVs.. Modern rally cars may be easy to drive IRL but they are still not hovercrafts. Snow and gravel has lateral grip level of what you would think is proper for tarmac. It's almost impossible to get cars sideways, unless you drive like a complete madman. Provoking on-throttle oversteer is nearly impossible in 300+hp RWD car lmao. And when they DO get sideways, they are straightened instantly by an invisible hand, like some hidden stability control is guiding you through. Tested with sim mode and wheel, all assists off. Complete ripoff, stay with Dirt Rally if you enjoy realism and challenge. Tarmac and braking/jumps were improved though, everything else ruined...

    • @SKolev-uc5wf
      @SKolev-uc5wf 7 років тому +2

      That's what I am seeing from videos too. The inertia factor of the cars is so little. Also the suspension is kind of too perfect over the bump map of the tracks, cars stood too flat and perfect on the road, feeling magnetized.

    Great review! As all of us who love racing games know all too well, these kind of games get drastically overlooked. Thankfully, this isn't the case with the Dirt series, my absolute favourite series in the genre.
    Overall, this is an amalgamation of all of the Dirt titles, taking the best features of them all into one game. Because not all of us are hardcore SIM fans, I love that there is an option to play both styles. It opens the game to a much wider audience, feels like a rally title (with the added perks of landrush etc), and looks/sounds fantastic!
    I'm thrilled to have this game back where it should be.. with gameplay that it fun as hell. Nuff said. Grab it.

    Interesting, it is what it is. I really feel that what Project Cars did for track racing needs to happen for Rally. In other words, the community needs to fund it's own rally sim. I'm all for it and would be the first to put my hand up and into my pocket for it!
    Dirt 4 downloads Friday, still will be better than nothing and probably will be quite good.

Seems confusing that all the mappings are listed under the pedal-entry or even from the CSS, but i just mapped everything accordingly and it seems to work. That is correct. Colin McRae Rally evolved into the DiRT series, which dropped the name after DiRT 3 I believe, but it's still technically okay if the series.
      I'd say it depends on what kind of racing you're looking for. If you want exclusively off road racing, then DiRT is a solid option.
      If you want more variety, GT Sport is good, but you can also check out Project CARS 2 or Assetto Corsa

    I'm probably gonna pick this up, but man I think I better lower my expectations after the masterpiece that was Dirt Rally. I live in Wales (and near some WRC rally stages) and for sure DR nailed the look and vibe a lot closer to reality than D4 manages. I just hope if Dirt Rally 2 comes along they take the same community assisted development, because ultimately that lead to a lot of good changes and improvements in direction of the game.

    Not sure whether to go with DIRT4 or WRC8 (which seems to *finally* to have got its shit together as a series)
    Plus ALL Codies releases seem thin on track quantity, they could at least throw in some 'legacy' courses form earlier iterations :/

  • @synthbent715

    So far I'm enjoying it ok. I really love the way the physics in Dirt Rally felt, you could really get the weight of the car into a rhythm that I just haven't been able to do in Dirt 4 yet in my hour and a half or so of playing. It just feels like there is too much grip, but I keep seeing people on both sides of the fence about that. The stage creator is cool but man, where are the bumps and stuff? The roads are too smooth, one of my favorite things about DR was how realistic the road surface seemed, and I'm just not getting that in the new stages, they just seem really smooth and flat. I hope they fix some stuff in patches, and I'll keep trying to get a hang of the new physics.

    This guy forgot to mention a ton of stuff man. There's the Freeplay mode which provides a ton more content if you're into that, different types of multiplayer such as real time racing/bracket (time trial), create/join a lobby, an used car lot which allows you to (obviously) buy used cars, run your own team(similar to dirt rally but with more depth), create your own paint scheme for your team.
    There's a lot going on in this game, so while I feel it could use more official locations, a few more cars, specifically for non-rally racing series, it's very solid and more content is sure to come. Dirt Rally put out free content, so I'm hoping for the same here, but even if they decide to charge, I'd still buy it because this game is that good.

      Coen wildevos comparing what you get over dirt rally... yeah. You don't get much. Someone apparently doesn't consider reselling same old content multiple times as a lame attempt at content creation ... ?
      Watch the review and you'll see that your not getting much new.

    Great review William, couldn't agree more with the lack of content, especially in the officially licensed FIA WRX. If Codemasters can bring ALL 21 Formula one tracks to F1 2016, why can they only bring 5 out of 12 WRX tracks to Dirt 4? And those tracks are a lot shorter than those F1 tracks as well.
    On the negative side I think you could have also mentioned no support for VR out of the box.
    Having all that said, I can't wait until June 9th to start playing this!!!

    dirt 4 on simulation is more playable with the pad for me especially the rwd monsters, in dirt rally it is almost impossible to drive those with pad and all ass off, but in dirt 4 it is a lot easier and im happy for that as a controller player. btw gamer mode is not meant for controller, it feels so weird and zero control, they should make a split in the leaderboard imo to filter contrler and wheel gamers.

      Thanks for those words, I played Dirt Rally mostly with a controller as well. Reading your comment I look forward to giving Dirt 4 a try with the controller as well. Luckily we can now scale AI difficulty unlike Dirt Rally.

      Well all the 2017 WRC cars are out due to licensing. There are no Porsches, no Saabs, no Toyota's, no Skoda's. For WRX they get all the 2016 supercars except for the Audi S1 RX which feels meh as well since Ekstrom won the championship with it. I agree that 55 cars is a decent chunk to have but still, there are some obvious cars lacking.

    Overall Dirt Rally is more recommendable pure rally game for player who is looking for good rally game. Rally content is better in DR, price is lower and physics damn good even if Dirt4 has some improvements. But in lower price Dirt 4 could be fine "dlc" for Dirt Rally gamers. Now its 45e in PS Store. Im still waiting for way better discount..

    My problem was that the default control setting had a 20% deadzone. WTF MAN?! all the breaking defaults are set wrong so you have to change it right away. Like just fucking start with a decently tuned car. FWD is garbage. the rear wheels just dangle back there and you have to pull the rest of the asshole car along.

      I'm confused by these differing reviews. This guys says 'physics' are better, as evolution in fact. Other reviews say that it just feels too easy now.
      I think I'll have to make my own mind up on Friday.
      I'll say one thing though: if it has been dumbed down, then Codemasters have directly lied to people on r/dirtgame. The said multiple times that simulation mode would be better and just as hard. I will wait and judge for myself, but I do not like being lied to and my money taken dishonestly.

    • @sergeysapozhnikov5717
      @sergeysapozhnikov5717 7 років тому +12

      This is just as hardcore as DR, except for maybe rally track width.
      For some reason i repeatedly see people perceiving D4 as "less hardcore", although there is no actual reason to think so: those who actually played the game repeatedly say otherwise, physics is even improved over DR.
      DR just positions itself like "look, i'm hardcore!", and D4 do not, but... that don't make D4 physics any worse than DR.
