I didnt like dirt rally. I found it far too inaccessible. I wanted to pretend to be colin mcrae without the game reminding me every turn that im not and never will be.
This sounds far better, and i can act out my rally driver fantasies far better.
I love your review style. Here we are 2 years after release and I see DiRT 4 on sale for $12. Is it worth it? Let's just check out an ACG review.
What is wrong with the racing community and the comments? "Oh you are not a real race fan or car guy if you play Forza or GT, sims are the only good games." Just have fun for fucks sake.
Nothing wrong, just different preference.. i won't have fun in a forza game, just like you won't have fun in a sim.. (idk).. no need to get angr about it though.. but they are not getting my money :)
Terje Lindtveit Sure. I have fun in a lot of racing games. Arcade, simcade and sim. But I don't run around and mock people because they don't play a "true racing sim" or because they prefere Forza over GT. If I want to prove something I go out and drive fast on the autobahn or go to a track day or to the nürburgring. There is no need to attack people over a game. But hey, it is 2017. Everyone is a special sjw snowflake

I love GT AND Forza for what they both do well. And I love stuff like Dirt and GRID etc. Can't stand when people think I'm not a car guy or racing fan because of the fact I like all types of racing games.
Play with full assists if it makes it fun for you. I play with assists cuz it's the only way it's fun for me. Who cares what some 13 year old kid has to say
"the racing community" that is funny for me who drove cars 280hp+ for the last 14 years irl (focus rs 2018 coming in a few weeks), I stopped playing what people call "simulations" the day I went to the norschleife and realized "sims" were harder than real driving, if anything forza is closer to reality than "sims" as real life loosing control and sliding is actually pretty "smooth" I never had a car snap like they do in games, you have plenty of time to think "Crap...it's happening...I'm going to close my eyes now and wait till it's over"
Your videos are awesome! They're honest and unlike with some game reviews, I don't watch the gameplay on screen and disagree with your conclusions about it too often. You've earned my sub.

Thank you for the awesome review, as always, ACG. This is just what I was expecting, a more accessible version of Dirt Rally's handling (the numbered Dirt games always have been arcady to some extent). I can't wait to pick it up, however I'm a bit dissapointed in the content, mainly locations variety. Procedural track generation is good, but we're going to see the same 5 locations all the time. I understand the fact that the game made by Big Ben holds the official WRC licenses, however I feel there are not enough locations to drive in. Old CMR games had snow, red sand, dirt, gravel, tarmac, the whole variety you need in a rally game. Even Dirt Rally has a good variety, even though it's lacking in locations as well. Still, I'm itching to play this as it's a more polished and higher budget Dirt game than Dirt Rally was.

Awesome! I'm so glad you reviewed this, and that the devs had enough confidence in their game to make the review embargo BEFORE the deadline to get it 20% off for humble bundle subscribers.
The only thing I was hoping you'd talk about, but didn't, was the amount of Rally vs Rally Cross in the "campaign".
I didn't expect much when "Dirt Rally" was in the HB monthly sub because I'm not super into racing games. But then I played it and realized I very much prefer the "rally" type of racing with no one else on the road, time trial-ing, and being okay with coming in at 2nd-4th place a fraction of a second behind the driver above me.
Since there's no obvious huge F-ups in Dirt 4 I'm going to go buy it now, and hope those pop-up issues on PC will get ironed out.

Same, this game came too early. I was hoping for more content for DR. Looks like D4 has a lot of the same tracks as DR. I recognize a lot of them from the vid.
@InVader So the devs came to the conclusion that Dirt Rally was too difficult and with Dirt 4 they've redeemed themselves.
J-Ryder yeah they have said this themselves that they hate that dirt rally Is called the dark souls of racing games , but I'm pretty sure they will Make a dirt rally 2 that game by itself put them back on the road

Great review. I have been playing this one for a bit and I love it.
I find certain areas of the game to be more, and less challenging. Like, World Rally Cross in the cars? Crank it up. But when you get in that little buggy thing? Total write off for me. Short Course trucks? Touch and go. Sometimes I'm a train wreck.
I like that you don't BEG your viewers to subscribe and instead you'r elike "Eh, maybe subscribe."

this guys needs to be more popular! his reviews are so good it makes games I wouldn't want to play, a game I want to play. ACG reviews put just about all big game company reviews to shame. he gives so much detail and overall covers everything. great job and more people should learn from him.
Got the game. Soundtrack is top noch. One of the tracks has been my ringtone for about 3 months lol. I'm on Gamer settings, Champion Difficulty. Man it is such a tension-filled experience. Good work Codemasters although I'm not too keen on the graphics, I think Dirt 3/Rally take the cake in that department.

earlier in my evening i stumbled upon your dirt rally review, looking for dirt 4 reviews, and as i said on that page, i'm glad i did, since i hadn't completed much of that game, wondering if i should still get this one, because i'm a ps4 guy, and i also wanted to get Wipeout Omega Collection. i didn't really wanna purchase two games at the same time, and your review of dirt rally actually got me back into that game. ha. so, i wanted to thank you for your honesty, especially when you said, (to paraphrase, because i know it's not verbatim) "at times i kept asking myself if this was really made after dirt rally"... and that sold me on the fact i chose not to purchase dirt 4 at this time... BUT, because you said it's a buy, i know i will... eventually. :) thanks for covering every aspect of the game. much appreciated.

Advanced blending, Like in Dirt Rally, Is an different and precise rendering of transparency effects. Including tree's, Fences etc, etc. As you pointed out, It is very demanding, I have no idea why they put it in the mainstream game tbh. Cheers for the review!

Wait, one of my biggest complaints about Dirt 3 was how music never played while racing, despite the awesome soundtrack (Gaslight Anthem's Spirit is Jazz for example). Now, that makes sense when doing rallies and trailblazers and whatnot, but during land rush or rallycross, music couldn't hurt! Is Dirt 4 the same case?

Feels like they have tried to appeal to both casual racers and sim racers but havnt commited to either. Dirt rally = hard core simulation racers = small market. So they try and go down the middle but I think they havnt gone far enough. Dirt 3, 2 and the original, it was memorable and awesome because of its extreme sports attitude, gymkhana, stadium circuits, battersea compound. Even the dashboard mascots and traveling the world via the trailer menu gave it style. Dirt 4, dare I say it, looks like a recycled, accessible dirt rally maintaining solely the WRC feel which won't appeal to many. Still can't wait to try it and hope the FISH school is decent 😀

I'm actually a forza fan, but tbh I really missed the variety of good racers (especially from codemasters) back in the 360 days
If I had a decent PC and a wheel setup I'd get Assetto Corsa in a heartbeat!
On PS3 there is Gran Turismo 6 that was recent and Gran Turismo Sport looks amazing.
Colin Demeulemeester Gran Turismo has better physics than Forza and Dirt, and it has the best track selection of any racing game series.

Is trailblazer back from Dirt 3? I remember it being pretty damn fun, just taking crazy Pikes Peak cars on a what was essentially a rally stage (albeit not as complex). Also man that music sounds good, can't wait to hear the rest of it!

Thank you for the great review! Might have to pick it up. Dirt 3 didn't do it for me at all, and Dirt Rally, although great - didn't have that "pick it up and run a quick, fun, race or two feel". It was more of a "need to have a solid hour or two of pure commitment and high anxiety feel". My only real disappointment in the Codemasters race games lately is the absence of Toyota. To me, nothing has yet compared to back in the day playing Colin McRae 2005 in the Toyota Celica GT-Four ST185.

Does anyone feel that if you are playing in automatic mode the car shifts at very stupid rpms? the WRX would shift 2-3k under redline. It basically forced me to learn to play the game with sequential on. Which is very weird when you use a controller

Great review as always. Using the Thrustmaster T150. The game recognized it right away, no fucking around. Adjusted the FFB a little and feels great. Im already looking up bands from the soundtrack lol. Can't wait to get back to it tomorrow.
