I am a new Ham looking forward to getting on HF. I went back and got my General license. I heard that my Ham club LARC had listed this used "450" for $450. I searched youtube for a video on the 450 and came across your video. After watching it I snagged the radio and just got done outfitting My HF shack today... I will be "on air" tomorrow! This video was succinct and informative. After the second viewing I am confident going forward on HF with this rig. Thanks Huge!
So glad I found your video 5 yrs late but better than never.....Ive been thinking of buying the radio for ages and now you have persuaded me in the right direction...73's and stay safe ......
I'm the rookiest of rookies in the ham radio arena. As a tech, I have a long way to go but looking at this 450 as a good starter hf rig. It'll let me listen to everything while being able to get contacts on those frequencies available to me. When (if) I get my general, I'll already have a radio that I can use from the get go. It all seems so daunting, but this is what I'm gonna use to get my feet wet.
The Yaesu FT450 is a great little radio. HF& 6 meters I have had alot of fun with it . I love the compact size and the mobile mount for the ft 450& ft991 are the same. The stock mic MH-67 has a different sound than the MH-31. But overall good mic's. 73 AE4OY WILLIAM EM-81UF SOUTH East Georgia (OLDYELLA)
Thanks for this review, a good memory refresher. I have the 450D. Sometimes, I forget how to do its many features. I wish it had a keypad like the IC718, other than that, way kewl. I'd like to see the new Icom IC7300 if I remember it right. That's the only rig I'd consider too, but it will cost more. The MD100 mic is a bit pricey, Heil may be a better deal. The bands have been bad off and on for quite some time. 73, Don
I was looking for an 857 or 891 as my first hf rig today at a local ham fest. I like the portability of them. I didnt find either of those there but came across this ft450. It’s a little bigger but i’ll still use it in my vehicles.
as far as a budget HF rig goes this IMO is a great option as a first buy... a lot of people also chose the Icom 703 but I personally own the 450D and still use it
It's been about five years since you made this video. Are you still enjoying your ft-450d or have you upgraded to some other models that have taken its place for daily use?
hi! understand that this is an old radio but still want to get one. i'm just confused about the main difference of this model over FT450D. does it come with DSP? how about internal Antenna Tuner? i noticed that you tried to tune your antenna using the Tune button.
I just Bought a used 450 it is not the 450D. The display is a blue color is there a way to change it to the white letters and numbers ? I have not been able to figue out how to do it if there is a way.
I was wondering on a tech license how much of 10m do I get is it just 10 m sideband or is it what I'm sorry I am a HF rookie I am looking at this radio as my first HF radio N0SPW
I have nodded my version, it was a soft mod, by pressing several keys and turning on at the same time. I don't remember where I found this info, but I promise you I can transmit from broadcast band to 55 mhz.... yes on 27 mhz as well. It's out there, just don't upgrade to latest firmware, that kills the feature
I've recently bought one of these, but I find the RX audio terrible & muddy; the only way I've found to improve it is to turn the contour fully down to the left. Out of the numerous rigs I own, the FT-450D is hands down the worst for receive audio. Has anybody else noticed the same poor audio?

Picked this rig up today at a local ham fest. It’s my first hf radio. I’m pretty happy that you have the same one and like it so much.

I realize that this review is 4 years old. But I just wanted to say excellent presentation. Definitely a radio worth consideration.
Thanks for mentioning this unit can go mobile with the ATAS-120!!! You've given me another, less expensive option!!!
I'm getting this radio in about a month and I can't wait.

Thank you for a nice demo.
Great Vid. I'm thinking of one of these over the ft-857. Thanks for making and sharing.
Allan Thompson.. I hope you kept the 857.

The mars/cap mod also opens up the cb range ssb as well.
Screw CB
^^ Dude , you probably started on CB and then moved to HF. BYE BYE BYE.............
Would this be a good entry level rig for a technician ? So much out on the market and way to many options.

I bought this as my first technician radio about a month ago and so far I like it. I still have a lot to learn.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. Picked up a factory refurbished F450 today and love it. KO4SZT
I just bought a new yeasu 450D. V Si far Iove it

Nice informative video. What numbers did you use for the green color?

Thank you ....
Does radio come with a power cord to plug into wall? Or is it just a mobile to run off battery in car?
O meu saiu do branco psra o amarelo só . Nao consegui as outras cores .
Hello ! Can you set the RF power at lower level ?
Yes,from 5 to 100W
Hello dose this radio use UHF and VHF I’m new to ham so dose it use all these frequencys
Talentedtongueoo7 no it is only HF/6M 1.8-54MHz
Ok well do u have any info to help me understand the difference between radios im new to this thanks alot
@@Talentedtongueoo7 search UA-cam for Ham beginner radios
The perspective makes the transceiver look really small - or is it your hands that are really big?!
Do you think this is too much radio for a technician?
yes it is, this does the HF bands, of which you have very little transmit privileges.
@@Young0maker Thank you
@@DuckingAround58 no problem, it's fairly easy to upgrade to general should you wish to talk to the world
How would you protect against EMP?
lead box?
That's not a problem. You just have to hope you're still supple enough to put your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

Does radio work 27 mhz ?
Of course
Zhaqir Hussein: Not when new but there is an easy "mod" to open it up.....just remove one diode (google for full information).
Will it recieve and transmit on 27fm uk CB frequency? Thank you

Gigaparts will do the MARS/Cap conversion which will allow the unit to RX/TX on 27 MHZ.
+Timothy Parry Jr yes but I think the D version is hardware mod like a jumper pad. This one was done via pressing buttons
Correct.

I love mine.
