My dad played this song when it came out..in our living room on a 45...he said ..son ...listen this is good..a great song..and it tells my story of my life...he died in 08...I hear this song ...and cried the tears wishing I never cry.
Your dad is in resting in peace in heaven.
Wish this song is always be your side and your father's.
It’s such a beautiful song, I’m sorry for your loss, I don’t know which made me cry more , the song or your post. I don’t know you but bless you. 🙏💕
Triste.
A música é linda.
Meus sentimentos.
@@twm915 hermosa y nostálgica canción!!!!
Fabulous. This song always makes my cry. Love Gilbert and have loved him since I was 17.i'm now 70. What a songwriter! 🙂💜👌💐🇬🇧
The way he can play and sing perfectly with his eyes closed amazes me
Dito, Iam 66 and have always loved Gilbert. AS a musician, I play this song every night , good teary vibes :)
@@MrJohntheHarp Great Choice. Long may it live.. and Gilbert. 🙂💜👌
I am 66 ... still remember the magic of this song when I first heard it many many years back. He is a genius lyricist
My 68 year old soul still skips four beats when I hear any of GOS songs, especially this. Privileged to have been there when this gem hit the airwaves.
This has too be both the saddest and yet in someway the most beautiful song ever written and he still sounds good today.
Brings tears every time I hear it and it will be a song for all people for all time.
Still sounds as good today as in the 70s. A great original singer song writer. Such a talent not like today's X Factor clones.
I so agree!!
The clones may agree but you've got me!!!
Clones or clowns ?
talent
I’ll be 63 years old this coming October and I remember this song back in the 70s when I was just a kid. It was great then as it is today thank you Mr. Sullivan for putting out such a wonderful song.
I feel this song very much…especially when my parents died 3 months of each other…brings me to tears. What a great song!
Saw him live at Liverpool in February. What a singer, what a songwriter, and what a legend!
and how lucky u were.....ill die without seeing him in person..
@@rosemarierobertson418 Thank goodness we have UA-cam. 👍🏼
A much underrated genius of a singer songwriter.
Underrated ? By who ?
@@ElvarMasson Not underated by me.... however, we must all agree he never received the recognition and status he deserves for startling and original lyrics.
@@robertgeorgemiller278 He's brilliant 😉
One of the most beautiful songs ever
I heard this great song back in '72, and then my father died in '73, and the song stayed with me ever since... It always take me back...
His voice is still amazing after all these years.
I've been hearing this song for 40 years and it chokes me even more as I get older. Wonderfully written Gilbert, thank you.
One of the very very few songs to actually make me cry. The Vulfmon version.. lawd
everytime I hear this song I get tears...your awesome Gilbert!!
Danny Quintero this song touches my soul. bring tears to my eyes. tje message is to deep
@@jorgesohu03 and when she passed away I cried and cried all day.
Same here. Brings memories of time gone by. Hope shes doing fine. Haven't heard from her since mid 70's
Gilbert still sounding good singing this song. I’ve been loving this song since I was a kid back in the 70’s. I heard him sing this on another video on on of those variety shows with only him playing keyboards. I tell you hearing the orchestra and the other musicians make all the difference.
Without a doubt a masterpiece in terms of songwriting
I lost my father in 69....this song has always resonated with my heart from the first time I heard it.
This song hits home to nearly everyone in some way. God bless you all who are alone.
the sad thing about this song is it's preparing you for the pain of losing someone because you feel it in the song, the emotion and heatbreak..i bloody tear up everytime i hear this.
same here. i just love this song..always makes me cry
He has got a golden voice, just absolutely fantastic xx
Old songs never die.. it will keep on playing and listening
I forgot how powerful and still his voice is♪♫ Today this song still has that certain freshness to it, just like it did when it first came out♪

Tears still flows every time I hear it since the 70's. Heartbreaking and so beautiful!
I cry with this fabulous song..... I don't know how to say in english but in french we call it '' ma madeleine de proust'' to say when a thing is making us cry
Still in very good shape with an excellent voice after 45 years - chapeau!
Wow! Yes! Gilbert sounds so awesome still. A masterpiece of a song.

I miss my father in this song. 🎶💕😭
I look at him playing here and a smile comes across my face.
currently 17 years old n i’ve been listening to this song since i was about 8 or 9 ... never seen it performed live but i love it
Gilbert O’Sullivan my contemporary artist. I love this song ! Awesome
It's amazing how his voice sounds just like it did 40 years ago... Besides, he is such a sensitive person, a poet who makes us all, effortless, share his dreams and feelings. He is such an exceptional artist
This is not a song but a hymn. Wonderful. Congratulations Gilbert
What a beat up piano. It must be very historic for him and he loves it so much!
Lovely man, this.
What ability.
We all gain!
I will never get Tired of Listening to Gilbert singing these songs. Very Underated singer and songwriter, very talented man.
Subestimado?
No words I can add . . . will the tears do? I had a love in the 70's who became my wife. This song and many like it accompanied us down the years. Truly magical memories . . .
I am so glad I found this song🥰. It fill my heart with gladness
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She stood him up"
"No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play?
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God in His mercy
Who if He really does exist
Why did He desert me?
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
My mother and father (german and saudiarabian) used to listen to Uncle Ray's great and marcello marvellous poet poetry even in the 70ies in Jeddah in their white Dodge Magnum car. We went to Al Haddah palace in the desert listening cartridges from ABBA, Boney M and Gilbert o' Sullivan. The man who said I'm a writer not a fighter was a peacer. Rather than all the american, british and german hippies in those days. Ray never changed his style thus remaining faithfull to his own originality. An irish angel who wants peace and love. Fed up with war, violence and arguments. He gives nothing for a white christmas. He wants Peace✌❤
You have been warned? Are you out of your mind? Telling it this way has an intimidating flavour. You tend to scare.
Marvelous 😢
An amazing and timeless talent.
Wow. He looks the exact same as he did back in the day! Good tune.
I miss him, it is so good to see him still performing!, wonderful artist of classic songs.
We ❤you 😢my best song 🎵 since my youth now 58 and 😢😢when I hear this song memories 🥺🥺
What a song!
I heard this song as i was a child in the radio and since then its saved in my heart. So great...
I was only 10 when i first heard this song, love it so much until now im in my 40's still love listening this song🥰
I wish young people would understand the difference between talent like this and the manufactured talentless 5 minute wonders we get now.
Very true..born 65 and grew up through the 70s...outstanding time
I'm 25 and i like old songs so much!!!
I do.
Mange 2 We do. Just like classical music is totally different from your generation’s music.
@@Namaster88 This isnt classical my guy.
wow Gilbert was and is pure legend of POP

As good as he was 40+ years ago . A great song and performer!
I love this song :'(
Beautiful song!! Timeless
Love this guy's music. So talented is he.
Always play this song whenever i'm lonely ... i cried and then after... Oh what a relief whit matching deeeep breath!!! :)
A sad, immensely powerful but such a beautiful song that resonates with us all as we get older.
That guitar solo by the late Big Jim Sullivan is iconic. They don't show who is playing acoustic guitar here,I wonder if they used the studio recording?
Happy 70 th fantastic
Super best!! Will be handed down in all generations..
He sounds the same as the 70s I love this song 🎵 ❤️ 😍
Could listen to this song everyday Abd not tire of it
I remember learning these lyrics, this guy could have been a poet.
Apparently Leonard Cohen was a poet, he put his words to music because he couldn't earn enough from poetry.
thank you very much love you
The best from past for all times !
The best! Anos 70 !❤
just WOW!!👏👏👏
I love this song 💓
A good song is a song that you hear for the first time and got hooked to it. This is one of the song. I first heard it a month ago and I'm 54. Why I've never heard it all these years? 🤔
Again as said earlier..you are the man
Incredible performance !
love him
I think it is good music for the ears and pleasant to the ears.
Wonderfull song !! I love it very much
Totally agree, so talented and modest 👍👍👍👍
This song always reminds me of Mum who is with us, I get a lump in my throat everytime.
Expiry date until forever love this song ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍀🍀🍀
Beautiful song 👏👏👏
Que inspiração ao escrever essa música!
I love the 🎻 s , orchestra tours are wonderful, I saw Olivia Newton -John twice with a full orchestra, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra was entranced by her.
Me toca muito..amo♥️🇧🇷
Sad music always makes me cry
Beautiful.
A lot of people remember exactly where they were when they heard this song when it first came out. Me one of them. I like that he’s in Old Jersey and I heard it in New Jersey.
I heard this when it first came out when I was a youngster but didn’t pay much attention to the lyrics at the time. However, the resonance of the lyrics and the deep emotions conveyed within them has continued to increase over the last 50 years. This song and “She’s leaving home” by The Beatles never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
Thank you for posting. He still got his voice, bravo.
Beautiful
What a song !! fantastic
love the taped up Roland keyboard, a rare model now.
