My dad played this song when it came out..in our living room on a 45...he said ..son ...listen this is good..a great song..and it tells my story of my life...he died in 08...I hear this song ...and cried the tears wishing I never cry.
@@ElvarMasson Not underated by me.... however, we must all agree he never received the recognition and status he deserves for startling and original lyrics.
My 68 year old soul still skips four beats when I hear any of GOS songs, especially this. Privileged to have been there when this gem hit the airwaves.
This has too be both the saddest and yet in someway the most beautiful song ever written and he still sounds good today. Brings tears every time I hear it and it will be a song for all people for all time.
I’ll be 63 years old this coming October and I remember this song back in the 70s when I was just a kid. It was great then as it is today thank you Mr. Sullivan for putting out such a wonderful song.
I lost my father in 69....this song has always resonated with my heart from the first time I heard it. This song hits home to nearly everyone in some way. God bless you all who are alone.
No words I can add . . . will the tears do? I had a love in the 70's who became my wife. This song and many like it accompanied us down the years. Truly magical memories . . .
Gilbert still sounding good singing this song. I’ve been loving this song since I was a kid back in the 70’s. I heard him sing this on another video on on of those variety shows with only him playing keyboards. I tell you hearing the orchestra and the other musicians make all the difference.
the sad thing about this song is it's preparing you for the pain of losing someone because you feel it in the song, the emotion and heatbreak..i bloody tear up everytime i hear this.
I can look up the year of release, 1972. I was 6. I remember hearing on the radio. I instantly liked it. I remember that someone brought their radio on the beach at the New Jersey Shore. The car we drove there in was exactly the Ford station wagon in the Thomas Crown affair. The first one.

In a little while from now If I'm not feeling any less sour I promise myself to treat myself And visit a nearby tower And climbing to the top will throw myself off In an effort to make it clear to whoever What it's like when you're shattered Left standing in the lurch at a church Where people saying: "My God, that's tough" "She stood him up" "No point in us remaining" "We may as well go home" As I did on my own Alone again, naturally To think that only yesterday I was cheerful, bright and gay Looking forward to who wouldn't do The role I was about to play? But as if to knock me down Reality came around And without so much as a mere touch Cut me into little pieces Leaving me to doubt Talk about God in His mercy Who if He really does exist Why did He desert me? In my hour of need I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally It seems to me that there are more hearts Broken in the world that can't be mended Left unattended What do we do? What do we do? Alone again, naturally Looking back over the years And whatever else that appears I remember I cried when my father died Never wishing to hide the tears And at sixty-five years old My mother, God rest her soul Couldn't understand why the only man She had ever loved had been taken Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken Despite encouragement from me No words were ever spoken And when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again, naturally Alone again, naturally

In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She stood him up"
"No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play?
But as if to knock me down

And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces

Talk about God in His mercy
Who if He really does exist

In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
