Voice is not Even close to the original recording! But I thank you for the beautiful memories when you wrote this! I think of my mother so much when I hear it ! Miss you mom this song cuts me!❤❤
Three years after this song came out, my mother passed away too young and too soon. Two weeks prior to this upload date, my wife passed, also too young and too soon. Thank You Gilbert for a song that has helped many to grieve and carry on.
Oh just Discovered my love for Gilbert O"sullivan again..53 at the moment..I've found myself transported back to my childhood..what an amazing song writer and musician..
I remember this in 1971. I was 13. My bedroom walls were plastered with newspaper pictures of the man. I never lost faith. His style is distinctive and unique, he's a wordsmith and stayed true to himself. I look forward to the next gig.
@@Phantom1963My father died around the time this song came out. I was just 6. It was my first time dealing with the reality of the death of the people that fill your world. I remember the first day back to school, and being scared when the teacher announced to the class what had happened. I figured I would get picked on. But no other child in my class ever said a word. I guessed, at the time, the idea of losing a parent was as scary to them as reality was to me. Anyway, this song always takes me to that time, and brings out feelings like no other song does for me. This is the first time I have ever shared this with others, and the first time I have heard anything but the original recording.
I believed lies about getting "older." I grew up in the 60's hearing "Never trust anyone over 30." Youth was good, older was bad. We don't call older people “elders” much, we call them "elderly." Sounds bad to me. I talked myself into feeling bad about life. I compared and judged. I am really working hard to stop this nonsense. Thanks Gilbert! You are great! Proof that older is great too.
😢 I remember hearing this song in 1971, it has only taken me 50 years to actually understand this song. Beautiful yet sad. And yes , Alone Naturally in coastal Mississippi 🧔
Thought you was Special ,in 70s, and still do,after all these years. Voice still amazing and timeless. Must add, beautiful guitar playing from Bill too. Thank you Gilbert, for all the joy.❤
Looking back over the years And whatever else that appears I remember I cried when my father died Never wishing to hide the tears And at sixty-five years old My mother, God rest her soul Couldn't understand why the only man She had ever loved had been taken Leaving her to start With a heart so badly broken Despite encouragement from me No words were ever spoken And when she passed away I cried and cried all day Alone again, naturally Alone again, naturally Lyrics brought me to tears.it happened to me...😭
I lost my wife last year right before our fortieth wedding anniversary. She died of cancer in home hospice three weeks after taking an ambulance to the hospital. I listen to this and some other songs like “She’s got a way” by Billy Joel and I can’t stop crying. But I still listen to them.
Hope you feel better listening to them... hope the time can soften what you feel... I don't know why I'm writing here, but, please, feel embraced by an unkown human being (me).
Thank you Mr. Gilbert O'Sullivan and Mr. Bill Shanley..........been listening to Gilbert O'Sullivan forever....... 45's, LP's, Eight Track, Cassette, CD's, Streaming...........wow I am old Jeff Thompson Rockford Illinois
His voice has not aged a bit! Same thing happened with Cat Stevens and Al Stewart. And this song is as timeless as ever. I love it when artists re-record their favorites (or ours).
As one of my old mates would say 'He doesn't sing a song, he tells a story'. RIP Ian, sure your listening to Gilbert and Dire Straits wherever you are.
1978 - got my first cassette player for Christmas and the one tape I had was Gilbert. These songs have stuck with me since and will stay forever. Amazing how songs can transport us through time - I can see my house, my parents - frozen in time. Gilbert is an all time genius.
I just rediscovered this wonderful song from my youth. Such a beautiful melody, juxtaposed upon the sad truth of loss in the lyrics. Thank you Gilbert O'Sullivan! It brought me back to the old days before digital music and the internet. But then I downloaded the sheet music, transposed to the key of C, so I can try to sing it myself for fun.
Gilbert, Beautiful just beautiful! Such a wonderful arrangement and a fantastic guitar break! The lyrics mean so much to me at my juncture in life! It always makes me cry!

Bless you, Cubano. I think this song has special meaning to many, and has provided a way for us to grieve and hopefully to heal as best we can. It's a special song indeed.
This has always been a song that I love but it will always draw an emotion in me that I can't control. I lost my mom in 1983 at 52 years young and I lost my dad in 2018 at 86 years old and when ever this song comes on there is no stopping the tears.
Was at the concert in Cork this week. It was wonderful as always I sang all the songs throughout the concert. Looking forward to the next time you will be back in Cork.
Thanks for the new post. You look and sound fantastic. Very much enjoyed it. One of the all time GREAT songs; definitely one of my life’s “soundtrack” tunes. Recently found out a fellow band mate is another fan. Just shared it. Got back “One of my favorite all time!!” I think we should cover it! Waiting for a “Clair” acoustic duo version. That would be welcomed for sure. Thanks again.

This song brings me to my knees. Without God's grace, I would never have been able to cope with the losses I've had to endure. Beautiful song.
I love how Gilbert's voice has developed since the original version. It's not grown old or fragile, it's just wiser.
It”s more fragile. He’s not the singer he used to be. Especially the high notes he struggles with. But that’s ok. Happens to us all.
It's sad to say but his voice has lost its brilliance
@@HenrySy502 i love this version despite of that lol it's like somebody older telling me an interesting story about his life

77 years old. Gilbert O'Sullivan is a genuine living legend!
Loved this in the 70s! Still love it now.
I agree!
As an introverted teenager when this song came out it really spoke to me and it still does today God bless you
There is nothing about this song that does not become more beautiful with time.
Brilliant artist and songwriter.

😢
As long as you remember your Mom, and your wife, they'll always be around. They're just waiting for you.
This song reminds me, no matter who we are, in the end, we will always be alone, naturally
One of the most beautiful songs ever! Thank you, Gilbert!
I hope my dad will never die, he is always there for me !

Wonderful that Gilbert is still active after these years. He’s my inspiration ❤️

A song from my youth that still cuts to my heart with both warm love and sorrow.
I lost my brother in September and he wanted this song played at his funeral. 😢

I remember this song from my childhood running around the house hearing it play on my parents radio. The best days
One of the most timeless songs I know. Beautiful. Loved the original and love this too. As I get older this song becomes even more poignant. 💕
One of the saddest and still most beautiful songs ever written.

WOW. He’s still amazing. I have always identified with everything he wrote. It helped me get through some hard stuff in school.
Brilliant show in Dublin tonight…
This song always "got me", as so many of my friends here have said. Another one that tugs at the heartstrings is "We Will." Such poignant imagery!
Such beautiful lyrics thanks Gilbert.
