Brian May, the lead guitarist who was studying astrophysics before joining the band, went back to after Freddie's death, and completed his PhD to become Dr. of Astrophysics. He worked with NASA to help develop the New Horizons Spacecraft that went to Pluto. In 2005, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. Sir Brian May, PhD. As a science teacher, I love to play Queen's music for my students and tell them you can be a scientist and a rock star.

While obviously not as big as Queen, there are some well-known figures in the punk scene that also have degrees. Bad Religion singer Greg Graffin has a PhD in zoology and lectures at Cornell on evolutionary biology, Descendents singer Milo Aukerman had a PhD in biochemistry, Offspring singer Dexter Holland has a Master's in molecular biology, and Dillinger Four drummer Lane Pedersen has a PhD in clinical psychology. Just a few other examples of rockers who are also brainy as hell. haha!

You must, must, must see the entire Live Aid performance. It was epic! I attended Live Aid in Philly and I’m sure Freddy had no idea (at the time) that he had 2 full stadiums in the palm of his hand. They paused the concert in Philly so we could watch Queen’s performance on screen via satellite. We were singing along and cheering as if Queen was playing on stage. It was an amazing day!

You said "One's a scientist, one's a dentist" but John Deacon was an electrical engineer and inventor. He built Brian May's amp out of an old radio and stuff he found in the trash. That amp gave Brian the ability to make all kinds of unique sounds with his guitar. He was also a financial wizard who saved them from going broke and breaking up and wrote several of their biggest hits. He is often neglected.

    • @msdarby515
      @msdarby515 2 місяці тому +2

      You're partly correct.
Brian May also built his guitar with his dad when he was just 15 years old, The Red Special. It has 3 pickups in a unique wiring system, and 6 switches (typical is 3) with individual on/off and phase switches for each pickup. Plus his treble booster, which wasn't widely used by other bands when Queen was a lot younger. 😊
The Deacy Amp definitely makes Brian's sound amazing, but it is only used in the studio, and not on all recordings. But Brian felt it made the multi layered harmonies "sit together in a more symphonic way". He can literally make it sound like a trumpet, clarinet, etc, and even stringed instruments.
Still awake? 😂 That's probably more than you ever wanted to know about Brian's equipment. 🤣

Brian May and Roger Taylor, were actively involved in the production of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. They served as creative consultants and executive producers, ensuring that the film accurately portrayed the band's history and the life of Freddie Mercury. I understand why they made the edits that were made. They exaggerated tension among the band, altered timeliness, etc. Still a great representation of the story of Queen.
BUT, while the movie implies that they broke up, that is not true. Roger Taylor actually put out a solo album prior to Freddie's. And the band had just been on tour before Live Aid.
Also, Freddie didn't know he had AIDS until '87, and they made 3 more albums before his death.

Rami Malek was a bit of surprise casting; partly because originally the producers wanted Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat) to play Freddie Mercury. But because he wanted to go full out with his portrayal of Mercury, they passed on him and went for Malek; after seeing him in the series "Mr. Robot".
He wound up winning not just the Oscar for Best Actor in 2018, but also a Golden Globe for Best Actor and a Screen Actors' Guild Award for Best Actor.
During his Golden Globes speech, Malek thanked Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor for "ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exist in the music, in the world, and in all of us." He also thanked Freddie for giving him "the joy of a lifetime".

There are some historical inaccuracies in the movie, like they made Freddie appear like he was the only one who partied hard, but the whole band was known for their wild parties, and the movie made the rest of the band look like they didn't party at all. Paul Prenter wasn’t the best influence on Freddie but he also wasn’t the devil. Freddie could make his own decisions. Also Freddie wasn’t sad and alone before he met Jim, he had his own family of friends living with him.

The song had its second revival in the early '90s because of a movie that came out called Wayne's World, which you guys should definitely watch. I have been waiting forever for you to do this movie!
Understand that the timelines and dramatic moments were movie-ized but it still is fabulous!
Big one....Freddie did not know he had HIV at Live Aid. It was 2 years later in '87 when he was diagnosed and he died in 1991.
The band did do solo projects and in fact Roger was the first with a solo album. That did not cause the tension. They were 4 perfectionist personalitys. They fought a lot, like family, but knew that they were better together. At the time of Live Aid they hadn't performed or recorded in about 5 months. They all needed a breather and were generally viewed as a band whose best days were behind them. Live Aid changed everything. It is considered the best live rock performance of all time. It gave them a second wind and they stayed toured, and recorded together until Freddie's death.
Their last 2 albums while Fred was alive contain some beautiful contemplative about the beauty of life and the world written by them all. Another album was released following Fred's death with music that he did the vocals for and told them to finish them up later. They did.
Paul really was a wedge for the band and Freddie did become self indulgent but was always considered to be a loving and generous friend.
He left 50% of his music royalties and nearly all of his personal possessions to Mary. He was the godfather to her eldest son. She lived on in his house with everything the same until early last year when in her 70s and 32 years after his death she auctioned most of the homes contents at Sotheby's. They were expected to bring $17 million but in what turned out to be an auction that smashed the record for a single person collection it brought in $54 million. Sotheby's held pre auction exhibitions in New York, L.A. and Tokyo and finally the entire collection for 1 month in London. Over 100,000 people attended.
The band Queen was very unique in that they all 4 wrote hit records. They are collectively one of the most educated and intelligent bands ever. Freddie had a graphic arts degree and designed their emblem. Roger started out in dentistry but switched to a biology degree. John had a degree in electrical engineering and designed the famous deaky amplifier. Brian has a doctorate in astrophysics and has assisted NASA.
John retired and retreated from public life shortly after Freddie died. He maintains his business ties with Roger and Brian but is more or less a hermit and they haven't personally spoken in years.
Roger and Brian both have had solo careers and for the last 11 years have toured as Queen with Adam Lambert. They're spectacular.
Roger and Brian have both been honored but British Royalty with both of them being made CBE ( Commander of The British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth and Brian awarded a Knighthood by King Charles, making his Sir Dr. Brian May. For his contributions to music, conservation and animal rights.
    Yep I'm a fan...can you tell?

Yes, I can tell you're a great fan! Thanks so much for sharing all these great details.
I had been to a few Queen concerts during the 70s and 80s. They never disappointed. Fast forward... Queen with Adam Lambert performed a couple of months ago in NYC, and this time around, I attended along with my daughter and son-in-law. It was their first time. There were many young people there, singing along faithfully to each song. It was very moving to experience this. Freddie's spirit infused the entire show, and Adam is quite the showman. It was a lot of fun and also a touch bittersweet for me. Everyone I had seen Queen with in the past is no longer with us, and yet, I saw the joy in my kids' faces as they got to witness one of the greatest bands ever. Life in full circle!
Oh, and I was at the Live Aid concert at the Philadelphia stadium. When Queen came on to perform, the simulcast was viewed by us on a jumbotron. Everything you saw happening at Wembley Stadium was a mirror image of what we were doing from our venue. It was an unforgettable event to be part of. I had no idea then, just how iconic a performance that would become! One for the history books!

I remember the day Freddie died in 1991. I was a pretty big fan, and had no idea he was sick, or at least not that I remember. It was a very sad day. You couldn't really be open about an AIDS diagnosis at that time and he hid it well. I don't know if you caught the shots of cats around his house. Freddie was a huge cat lover and gave a home to so many. After his death, he left everything to Mary and his cats, and some of them were also adopted by Jim.
They did a phenomenal job casting this movie for the whole band. They looked so much like the guys, it was eerie.

Another great cameo was the trucker who goes into the bathroom at the rest stop, who Freddy follows. The trucker is Adam Lambert, who is now typically the lead singer for Queen when they do concerts.
And I hate that it is too late but this weekend, at IMAX theaters, they had a high Rez, 12-channel audio presentation of Queen's concert in Montreal played back in 1981. The concert was specially taped on 35mm film, completely with great sound recording -- that was recently remastered for IMAX. Unfortunately, they only released it for the one weekend. Since I couldn't make it, I hope they do a second weekend in the future; apparently it made people feel they were actually seeing Queen in concert.

My sister and I watched Live Aid on a borrowed black and white t.v. that we begged our uncle for because we could NOT miss Queen. Trust me when I say that we both sang everything Freddy told us to, and we did all of the Radio Gaga movements. It was wonderful, knowing that people around the world were likely doing exactly what we were in that moment, not just the crowd they were singing in front of.
Note: they messed with the timeline: FM didn't have AIDS (or didn't know he had it at this time), but he did have the flu, if I remember? So he was still sick, but it was a pretty mundane sick, unless you're a singer, singing in front of a worldwide crowd.

You will love their live aid performance. The movie version did an amazing job replicating it. In fact, watching them side by side is perfection

    Awesome reaction.
Since Rob is a huge KISS fan also,
Eric Carr Kiss drummer at the time , passed away on the same date as Freddy, to cancer Nov.24,1991
Eric's death was over looked by the media.

One of the coolest things that I can never forget is the lead guitarist Brian May went on to get a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College in London in 2007! He'd interrupted his studies to play with the band.

I'm a Boomer who followed Freddie Mercury's journey over the years in real time. So when my sister and I went to see this movie, we cried out of nostalgia whereas younger people approached this as a cool new phenomenon.

48:40 the audience members visible in this move were people who originally went to the live aid concert. They were tracked down and invited to the shoot. One of them, who originally went with his father to his first ever concert, took his son as his father was no longer with them. It turned out this was his son’s first concert. I think that just epitomises how Queen touched the hearts of everyone who heard their music

Ever since I was 4 years old and heard that bass line in Another One Bites the Dust pounding out of huge speakers that shook the floor, I have loved Queen and Freddie Mercury. So glad you guys learned more about this awesome band and the amazing talent in Freddie. If you want to check out a performer, who I personally feel should be performing with Queen instead of Adam Lambert, look up Marc Martel. He’s the closest thing to Freddie we’ll ever see on earth again. ❤

I always say when it comes to these golden ages of Rock N Roll, for a band to form and become great, no youtube auditions, no tik toks just adds in the paper or maybe chance meetings, those fortuitous moments to forge the greats who have immortalized themselves, I just say, MAGIC. WHOLE LOTTA MAGIC. That's what it took. MAGIC.
