This is the godfather of all stoner comedies. Cheech & Chong’s next movie, yes, that is the title, is even funnier.😂
True
"Next Movie" is my favorite Cheech and Chong Film!
I agree 100%
I saw this at the drive-in movie
Nah disagree... 'Up in Smoke' was definitely their 'HIGH' water mark
Born in East LA is another good cheech flick kills me every time. He is such a legend.
That is a good one with a very funny music video.
"GET BEHIND ME, SATAN!!!" 🤣
"¿Jesús... es en Tijuana?"
Yeah, that IS a good movie...
Great movie. My favorite Cheech Marin flick is Shrimp on the Barbie.
Love Cheech and Chong!
God bless them!
They don't make stoner comedies like this anymore.
You might be pleasantly surprised by Pineapple Express
@@terryv2006 Pineapple Express is like 20 years ago, so his point still stands.
Sorry bud you're wrong. Being a big Stoner myself since 1981 the Harold & Kumar trilogy is the best stoner comedies. I never laughed so hard in my life when Kumar marries that giant bag of weed. "Make a decent cup of coffee b****!"
"Dave's not here, man." Total stoner flick that still cracks me up. Cheers....
It's me, Dave, Dave's not here!
@@MeIn321 Same, People used to yell out DAVE, DAVE why don't you answer, I'd look up and say, Dave's not here man.
My other colleagues and friends who were stoners got it, and easiest way to know if you new co0worker was a stoner too, well back in the day anywho
no, it's me, Dave, let me in
@@davidareeves It is funny. Whenever I start a new job or at a new school/education or anything with strangers for that matter it usually only takes half a day or so for the stoners to figure eachother out... a few jokes and common references quickly tells where ppl stand! :D
The album The Big Bamboo is so classic. Sister Mary elephant so funny!
Creech and Chong!! What a blast! Dave's not here, man!
OMG so funny the memories
Dave?
It’s CHeech
No, man. It's me Dave. I got the stuff
Creech and Chong was the $1 store bargain version of Cheech and Chong.
The song at the end of the movie - "Earache My Eye" - was a top 10 hit in the fall of '74
It was metal before there was metal. 😆
That was the title of the track on the album for sure, but I think the song was released as a single with the name "Watch Me Burn." I think.
Their song basketball Jones was a surprise hit for them in 73, it got up to like number 15 or something on the top 100 charts.
"Lost, due to incompetence" the score music at 14:10 is another great song from this movie
Haha, I just posted a comment about how my dad sang the first few lines of that song all the time when I was growing up! LOL. And as a kid I never understood why he wouldn't let me listen to his Cheech and Chong records, "But they look funny, Dad!" 😆
This is one of the best movies ever made. It came out in 1978, I was 18 years old, and it was actually the #1 movie in the country. I was a stoner back then, and I loved it. And I bet I have watched it a hundred times since then.
Born in the mid-60s I was destined to be a stoner. Puff the Magic Dragon was my favorite song and Scooby-Doo was my favorite cartoon as a kid.
Damn, you're old. I was only 16 when it came out.
@@Dude_Slick I was 14. I had to sneak in.
Damn I'm 20 now and still had the same connection to this film, I smoked a lot of weed and have easily watched this close to 100 times
@@thunderb4stard80 I grew up with cheech and Chong in the 70's, I had all their comedy albums and watched all their movies. I smoked weed every day and rode my dirt bike. My favorite music was Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osborne.
Back then they called it a lid, which was an ounce. And you could buy a lid for about $20, now they are $200, or more. A friend of mine still smokes weed and he buys it legally for $80 to $100 for an eighth of an ounce, with all the crazy names, like purple kush, wedding cake, etc.
In the 70's we had just mexican weed, Acapulco Gold, hash, and hash oil. Some of it was trash, you smoke a bunch of it and it would just give you a headache. Now it is all super powerful and one hit gets you high.
When I was in high school it was drug central, from 1975 to 1978, we would go to school and do drugs all day, I could get any drug known to man. From weed to hash, to coke, to acid like window pain, orange barrel, Mr. Natural, etc. That window pain was crazy, 1 hit of it and you were tripping for 8 hours.
I mostly just smoked weed and hash. It was fun times, and Cheech and Chong were legends. All my friends smoked and we all had dirt bikes, all we did was get high and ride dirt bikes all day.
Legend has it, the VW with the Rolls Royce grille, belonged to Jack Nicholson.
The Chevy Impala: Cheech Marin still owns it, and it still looks the same!
That steering wheel...when I was a kid, you'd see those on cars all over L.A.
Read the plate.
If y’all didn’t notice, Strawberry is portrayed by Tom Skerritt who was Dallas in _Alien_ and Viper in _Top Gun_ and Chong’s dad is portrayed by Strother Martin who was Captain in _Cool Hand Luke_
Glad to be back watching reactions since being in the hospital.
Strother Martin was in many movies with Paul Newman including Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid as well as westerns before that era.

@@johnsypher7936 I was wondering what the name of that movie was, couldn't remember, TY.
😱I can’t believe your doing this movie. I used to to listen to them on the radio before they did movies, and yes some of us did things like that✌️
LOL, I had the 8 track.
Totally 70’s, total stoner humor, very much of its time - love that you guys watched this one!
Fun fact: Strawberry is Tom Skerritt who was Viper in Top Gun
Tom Skerritt also co-starred in “Alien”.
And also the dad in Steel Magnolias, where he also shot up some birds..
He was already pretty famous for starring in M.A.S.H. A year after Up in Smoke he would star an Alien.
I wasn't lookin' at his neck, man.
Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams, and Cheech & Chong's Corsican Brothers are some wild movies. Oh, and don't forget their Christmas song about Santa Claus when the holidays roll around.
Also the movie Things Are Tough All Over where Cheech plays a variety of roles. This one is a gem.
Nice Dreams is my flick 🥸😁😎🤪
Still smoking also
They were also big stars in the pirate movie
YELLOWBEARD.
With the Monty Python crew
I grew up watching this film and almost 40 years later I finally have this re release on Vinyl WITH extra large rolling papers included!
Tommy Chong has kids who are also actors. Rae Dawn Chong - Commando and The Color Purple. Marcus Chong - The Matrix.
Rae Dawn!! ❤❤❤
I have waited SO LONG for you guys to review this. Please, eventually do them all!
Fun fact: Henry Ford made a vehicle entirely from hemp, including the gasoline, with the exception of the engine. Cool!
He also started Kingsford charcoal and built a city in the Amazon jungle.
He also was so anti-Semitic that Hitler found his writings on Jews to be inspirational.
Damn. I veered way off topic. Sorry, I am smoking the better future they dreamed of.
@@ThePelagicHermitI'm missing the issue with any of that
@@GeorgeTropicana Ford's anti Jewish rhetoric helped to inspire Hitler to kill millions of Jews (is what I meant).
Cheech was notorious for saying the wrong words (even though he's very educated) when describing something like "were here to reprocess the furniture." In the movie "Things Are Tough All Over," him and Chong are stuck in the desert and he says, "we're gonna die of heat frustration."
Cheech was an A student in college (so was John m Morrison). I read that Cheech's Father was a police officer (don't know if it's true).
In 1971 myself and my friends gathered in my friend's house to listen to the first Cheech and Chong album and we just could not stop laughing none of us were Stoners none of us were drug users but they're humor on their routines was just something we hadn't heard before later while stationed in the Coast Guard about 1975 I got to see them live performing their skits at the Honolulu shell in Hawaii which is kind of like a mini Hollywood Bowl this was also before the first movie came out
Dave's not here, Blind Melon Chitlin, Acapulco gold filters...I had that album
@@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman
Also the Big Bambo album..it had a giant rolling paper in it...

@@pamelalee1508 yup...me & my older brother rolled a 2 ounce joint just like in Up In Smoke but it didnt have any Labrador in it, it was just habberdash 😁
I’m getting super blazed before watching this later!!!! 💨💨💨💨
me too...puff puff pass ✌💖☮
We had so much fun in the 70's.... Cheech and Chong were the shit back in the day ... Before all the social media stuff. Miss those days, we were functional partyerz.....
Smoke it up!!
One of my favorite movies and 2 of my favorite people in the world. Cheech and Chong 🌿🔥💚
Cheech recently confirmed that this film was almost all improvised. They had an outline and knew where each scene was going, but there was no script. They just did their comedy and fit it into the film's situations.
According to UA-cam comment sections every movie was completely improvised. Hollywood doesn't even have writers. Why y'all keep making this up I have no idea. I mean, there's clearly a fully scripted plot after the beginning part.
But they improvise from their original script. Like JD telling her story was an improvise added scene. The actress had a roommate like that and was telling everyone at lunch. One of the guys got Cheech to hear it and he told Chong we are making this the next scene after lunch. They were obviously very amateur making this movie and in some way shape cinema in some form or fashion. Tarantino said their movies were some of his inspiration especially talking about something while doing something else like the royale with cheese scene
@@elbruces Search for "moments that changed the movies: up in smoke" and watch Cheech say EXACTLY what I just said, smartass. And next time try not to make yourself a fool.
Man, you don't need a script, you just gotta be punk. And a bit stoned.
The song they played in the contest was "Earache in My Eye". I'm so bloody rich and I only know three chords!
I own apartment buildings and shopping centers!!!!
Tldr if someone said this but their band name was "Alice Bowie" and the song they played is titled "Earache my Eye".
The Volkswagen was called the Rollswagen.
Used to occasionally see one on the road here and there. ✌🏻
I love this movie. Not only is it a stoner classic, it's just a great buddy comedy.
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong
Fun fact, Cheech Marin was on Celebrity Jeopardy and SMOKED the competition! He's actually very smart.
Oh, I'm excited for this one! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If you thought they couldn't get ANY GRUMPIER, THINK AGAIN!
PLEASE react to 1995's "Grumpier Old Men".
Cheech and Chong s Next Movie is a great one to react to. Ty for doing this classic.
Wow TROPIC THUNDER now UP IN SMOKE! Great job guys!
Yup, these guys summed up the dope smoking 70's crowd! I was preteen, smoking hard, and digging Cheech and Chong! I'm 58 now and shocked I even made it through college. 🤣
😆👏🏻 Now around the holidays you have to find their “Santa and His Old Lady” routine. Me and my siblings used to laugh and roll on the ground to Cheech and Chong !
It's not Christmas without Santa and his old lady....
@@markstoudenmire4935 😆👍
The cop ( played by Stacy Keatch ) says one of the most horrible lines one could ever say in front of a bunch of nuns and no one ever really notices how bad it should really have been when they watch this. The line " A funny story my Dad use to tell me Harry, the only kind of meat a priest would eat on Friday was Nun."
🤣😅😂
Early role for Tom Skerritt( Strawberry) who also played Julia Robert's father n Steel Magnolias.
Cheech and Chong’s Nice Dreams and Next Movie are both hilarious
"They're really not even gonna roll all the windows down."
No, definitely not. That would be a terrible thing to do. You guys seem so innocent. lol
After watching this reaction, I get the impression that there's more than they show. Amber seemed to know a few colloquialisms for marijuana. Just Sayin'
@@mhill781 But they live in an environment where it is practically legal. Things were a lot different back in the 70s.
We use to listen to their comedy albums in middle school library with headphones. My buddy had the albums. We would die laughing and get the look from the librarian lol
This was actually a couple of skits that were on their comedy albums. The song was Earache My Eye. Another song that you both as educators/coaches will love is Basketball Jones. It is definitely an earworm and will definitely be on Jay's playlist.
Jay would LOVE Basketball Jones!!!🏀🏀🏀🏀
Yes Basketball Jones!
OMG... watching this right now!!!
Come on Rob Squad! We live in a medically legal state!!!
The car scene alone makes this a classic its the best scene in the entire movie even if all of its funny you cant beat them sitting in the car when cheech is high as a kite.
Omg, a hilarious classic
The song they played during band competition is called Earache My Eye and has been cover by many bands including Scatterbrain. Check out Scatterbrain's song "Don't Call Me Dude" the video is hilarious.
Cheech & Chong had a few hit comedy albums back in the 70s. I think they were funnier than the movies.
Acapulco Gold is … badass weed
Sister Mary Elephant… SHUUUUTTTT UUUPPPPP!! They were so funny
Y’all, check out Anita Bryant to get that reference.
The history of how these two met in radio comedy is worth a listen. Becoming a teen and these coming out was timing of heaven :D
lol did you notice that the sketchy dude Strawberry with the birthmark is Tom Sherritt? He is the dad on Steel Magnolias (Drum) and he’s Dallas in Alien (I can’t remember if you’ve seen that; but you need to) and Viper in Top Gun.
I lived in Hollywood in the seventies and all of those roads they were on I totally recognize. The one where the motorcycle cop wants their hot dog brings back so many memories. I can tell you it does not look like that now.
Yep, huge rollin' paper and a great comedy album. Oh, sweet youth.
The album Big Bambu in '72 had the rolling paper, we used 2 ounces to roll it
Both of these guys are still alive and kicking.
"Nice Dreams" is another Great Ceech and Chong
lol..a classic!!!! I have seen this so many times over the years and I it just is always funny. I used to have tapes of their routines...
Dave's not here, man...
"Claaaaaassssss ..."
On a more wholesome fantasy/retro note: Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.
It's arguably the first archetypal fantasy movie as we now know them, and it's got some of the most famous early practical effects in cinema history.
The entire Ray Harryhausen special effects movies are great, I think the last one he did was "Clash of the Titans" in 1981.
Yep, all the Ray Harryhausen fantasy and sci-fi movies are worth the time. JASON & THE ARGONAUTS, might be my favorite. But MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD and CLASH OF THE TITANS (1980’s version) are all great.
Horse racing season….”Seabiscuit” would be perfect to watch! Stars Jeff Bridges (Big Lobowski) and Tobey Maguire (Spider Man). Great story lines, not just a horse racing movie
The 'TIED STICK' weed Cheech refered to was a stick about the size of a cigarette pack(which you could hide it in)with skinny sticks that had several thick wraps of Leaves from potent plants from Thailand carefully wound around the stick and tied around with a fine string. You just started at the top & carefully peeled off enough leaf to put in a rolling paper. It isn't done anymore. That's a piece of Ancient History Now.
I saw Cheech and Chong in a club in southern NH back in the 70s. They performed Earache My Eye as a closer. Now this was when you could smoke in bars, but not all of the smoke in that club that night was from tobacco.
As the stand up philosopher Gallagher once declared, "If you don't use it on stage, you can't write it off on your taxes. I put it down under transportation."
Oh God! I saw this at the movies with my friends when I was 16. 🤪❤
Trivia hardly anyone catches, Chong’s character who is listed as “Man” in the credits, name is only spoken once in the entire film. The scene with his father at the beginning, his father calls his name. “Anthony, I’m talking to you.”
Whoa. Dude. Thanks for taking me back on that trip to that room in the basement with the shag carpet, black light posters, lava lamps and incense burning. What... two days have passed!!!
Chong worked for Motwown as a guitarist before comedy. There's a great Joey Diaz Chong interview if can find on here where Chong tells his story. Micheal Jackson & Jackson 5's first concert was opening for Chong's band!😅
Born in '71 & discovering them in early 80's, I, like most before computers, had no clue Chong the mastermind behind duo. I was blessed to see the reunion show at famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in '10, a dream come true. However, in '93 I heard Chong was doing a solo set down the street at Zanies. So i went wondering how the hell is he going to pull off a show without Cheech? He was still "old Chong", black hair & beard & proceeded to tear the roof off! It was GENIUS to behold. Everybody knew the bits so he just grabbed audience members to play Cheech's parts. No spoiler here, but for FiFi bit he grabbed a hot chick! Was PERFECTION!!!😅 Then, the best part, he pulled out his guitar & jammed all the "hits" while we, the audience, sang Cheech's parts.🤘😎 And, believe it or not, was better than reunion with Cheech!
Also, among others you may recognize if keep on the Cheech & Chong trip, Pee Wee Herman got his break in their joints.
FINALLY!!! Cheech & Chong starting to get some young Love! 🤗💕
Appreciate it!
🌥 😎👌
Sometime in the 2000's South Park had an episode that featured a guest appearance by Cheech & Chong that inspired them to start working together again.
@@rogerdodger6025 Didn't know that, friend, thanks. Yeah, at the reunion show Chong said they were finally gonna do another movie, but of course never happened for whatever reason? Really hoped they had. Not same old C&C, but was hoping would take idea of rest home for old hippies mentioned in my other fave of theirs, "Nice Dreams", if for nothing more than introducing me to Dr Timothy Leary as teen!😅 With Leary as the "angel" on my left shoulder & William S. Burroughs as "devil" on my right, I managed to not only survive drug culture, but thrive these 53 years!!!😅 I know Cheech originally dropped out because he thought he stereotyped his people. I lived on South Beach in 90's when he did tv show "Nash Bridges" in Miami. A friend of mine ran into him & said he acted like a dk cause didn't want to associated with his past.
There was a joke in there when the ticket takers at the rock event turned the cops away and said "no wonder Anita Bryant is pissed off" and you seemed to question it. Anita Bryant was a beauty queen, who was famous for endorsing Florida orange juice, and was famously anti LGBTQ
I remember her well.
@@petercourtien4581 She sure showed them - all her religious fervor ENDED her career.
I can't tell you how many times someone called me and asked for Dave. My response: "Dave's not here man." Gift line to all the Dave's out there! I was 21 when this debuted, and in the Army. See photo to the left.
Korn did a great cover of Cheech n Chongs song Earache My Eye which was the song they sing at the end. They even had Cheech sing on it with them.
My first year of college was 1972 and that's when Cheech and Chong's 2nd album, Big Bambu, came out. Inside the album jacket was a rolling paper as big as the album. For those who might not know, Big Bambu was a brand of rolling papers.
One really stoned night at the dorm I pulled the giant paper out and we tried to roll a 2 ounce joint. Which is impossible to do BTW, but we tried.
When this movie came out and when I saw Chong lighting the huge joint I was unfortunately taking a drink and spit the drink all over the couple in front of me.
I got the album shortly after its release and by the luck of the draw, I got three papers in mine. Supposed to only get one but I won the lottery and got three. And yes, we used one to roll a Zeppelin joint. Not sure why you had a problem but we managed to do it just fine. Took four dudes four days to smoke it. Someone had to tell me that fact as those days are no longer in my brain. I still have the album but only have one paper left. Not sure what its worth on eBay but it's never leaving my possession.
We couldn't get the joint rolled tight enough to stay lit. Of course we were all baked at the time.
Finally! Now it's time for Animal House!
I was lucky enough to record an audio commentary track with Cheech Marin for the BluRay edition of his directorial debut BORN IN EAST L.A. and he had amazing stories. One I particularly dug was that before he became a comic, he was a music critic, and he was briefly roommates with a great folk singer named Karen Dalton, whose song "Something On Your Mind" is one I highly recommend for a future song reaction. Karen Dalton never became a big star herself, but she was influential enough that a later country star, Lacy J. Dalton, took her stage name from her.
I was also lucky to be friends with June Fairchild, who played the "Ajax Lady" here. She had been an actress in films like HEAD with The Monkees and PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN ROW with Rock Hudson and Angie Dickinson. She had also been the girlfriend of the lead singer of Three Dog Night, Danny Hutton, and she had effectively given the band their name (telling them how Australians would sleep with dogs to stay warm in winter and a "three dog night" was super cold). When I met her she had just kicked a habit that saw her homeless, and was staying straight and finding work again. The other shorter blonde girl who appears with her at Strawberry's house was Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith, an actress who did lots of cheerleader movies, and also was a replacement drummer for The Runaways after their original left the band. Sadly, Rainbeaux died young, and June and I went to her funeral. June herself died several years ago, but I stay in touch with her daughter.
Ahhh, takes me back to the 70's and my 12 year old self discovering these dudes! This is my fave, but Next Movie and Nice Dreams run very close behind. The godfathers of stoner comedy. Between them and the Krofft brothers its no wonder I did some of the things I did later in life (and enjoyed every damn minute of it)!
Classic comedy!! Please consider HALF BAKED for a future watch. Non-stop laughs like all the Cheech & Chong movies. Nice Dreams is my next favorite. Love y'all, keep smiling!! 🚬🥴 😙💨
Strawberry cracks me up.
The chick that snorts the cleaning powder on the paper plate does too.
Cheech Marin has went on to have roles in many movies and TV shows.
One of my favorites Cheech did is in Ghostbusters.
He was the one that said "Better late than never." when the Titanic docked in NYC.
Tommy Chong now sells drug smoking related items and CDB oils and the such.
Tommy was also a regular on That 70s Show.
Cheech has also joined forces with Chong’s CBD product line with their CBD gummy’s “Cruise Chews”
@@andrewcharles459 And he's featured in That 90s Show, the direct sequel.

@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 Thanks. I had a couple of errors.
I was never a drug user of any kind back in the ‘70s, nor have I ever been, and I’ve never understood or liked “drug and alcohol humor”. However.. Cheech & Chong are the glaring exception! I’ve always loved them!
Strawberry was played by Tom Skerritt. You may remember him from the movie Steel Magnolias. He played Drum. Great actor
About 15 years ago I got to see a Cheech & Chong concert where they had War as the house band. It was fantastic! For me though, the best part was before the show started they had Cheech & Chong impersonators going through the audience.
The Volkswagen Beetle with the Rolls-Royce front end was popular in the Seventies.
The huge joint they were smoking was called a spleef or spliff.
The song Cheech was singing was the Cheech and Chong hit "Earache, My Eye."
11:00 Honestly my favorite joke in the movie, & I quote this myself often 🤭
He steps outside onto his front lawn & calls it the "great outdoors" LOL
Definitely in the top ten all time funniest movies. Maybe top five.
My dad showed me and my sisters this movie when we were kids. Great memories lol
Classic movie for those who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s
Now you can do All the Cheech N Chong movies! 😂
I was also 18 in 1978 I remember this song being played about five times a day on the radio. It's also on their comedy album "Cheech & Chong's Wedding Album", in a Song /Skit called, "Ear Ache My Eye".
"We're changing from a code 3: direct pursuit to a code 347: lost due to incompetence" 😂

The soundtrack album had a large wrapping paper around the album 😂😂😂
First time I saw this movie was at a drive-in. The perfect place to partake. I remember the album with the giant rolling paper😎
Saw them live in mid-70s. Absolutely hilarious!!!
Funny story; my brother was thirteen when this was number one in the theaters so we got our mom to take us to the movies for my brother’s birthday with 3 or 4 of friends from the Catholic school we went to.
Mom had no clue what the movie was about until it started. To her credit, we stayed for the whole movie, and she laughed and thought it was funny.
She was kind of scandalized about some of the content, but I still remember that time.
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
That scene of her sporting Ajax was hilarious! I remember my friends screaming laughing at that part!
The entire concert scene is such unbelievable chaos. It's what early Mr. Bungle shows were like.
Cheech and Chong was the ultimate laugh for the 70s stoner crowd! Who had the album Big Bambu? It had a giant rolling paper included in it.
Okaaaay. This is the LAST thing I’d expect from you two. Lessgo. 😂
As a kid, I didn't understand why my Dad's Cheech and Chong records were off limits. 🤣🤣🤣 Also, I just now realized that he has spent my entire life singing the first few lines of Cheech's song: "
My momma talkin' to me tryin' to tell me how to live
But I don't listen to her 'cause my head is like a sieve
My daddy, he disowned me 'cause I wear my sister's clothes
He caught me in the bathroom with a pair of pantyhose
My stepmom would always smack his arm and tell him to stop it. 🤣🤣🤣
Tom skeritt played strawberry in this movie also played in Top Gun 1 as the boss that always gave Maverick grief he's played a lot of movies
Fun Fact: According to Cheech Marin, there was a band in Tucson Arizona that called themselves "The Finklestein Shit Kid"🤣

Early Christmas request. Cheech and Chong's "Santa Clause and His Old Lady" A Christmas classic. 6 minutes and 30 seconds well spent.
the 2nd one "Cheech & Chongs next movie" and "Nice Dreams" are both great & funny movies
This is my favorite Cheech and Chong movie. Thanks for the review. You should check out their comedy sketch of Santa and His Old Lady. Also, Tom Skerrit, who played the cousin, was Shelby's dad in Steel Magnolias.
