It's "trendy" to dump on _Dances With Wolves_ nowadays, but it really is a fantastic movie. I was quite the cinephile back then and definitely thought some of those categories should have gone to _Goodfellas,_ but what can you do? Nowadays the latter is far more iconic than the former, so in the long run, it all evens out.

Dances would still rake in the Oscars in 2024. If it's a "white man bad" movie, the Hollyweird liberal guilt crowd will slobber all over it. Full disclosure: I thought it was an entertaining movie, even with cardboard Costner as the lead character. His acting range runs from A to B. @@AlbertaGeek

@AlbertaGeek Dances has been ripped off by so many tropey blockbusters that no one has the right to call it a bad movie in any sense.
If people liked the travesty that is Avatar, then they would be hypocrites to say they didn't/wouldn't like Dances, seeing as Avatar is a direct rip of its story, except it's aliens instead of natives 😅

Great reaction Kristen & Vivian like alwyas, love this movie. Some fun-facts about this movie, some of the real criminals portrayed were actually toned down for the film, the infamous “funny how?” scene wasn’t in the script. This famous (if not the most quoted) scene comes at the beginning, when Pesci's Tommy DeVito jokingly-yet-uncomfortably accosts Henry Hill for calling him "funny." In addition to being the driving force behind the scene on screen, Pesci is also responsible for coming up with the premise. Both of Martin Scorsese’s parents have cameos in this movie. She plays Tommy's mother in the infamous dinner scene following Billy Batts’s murder, but the family connections hardly stop there. Tommy’s mother’s painting of two dogs sitting in front of an old man ("One's going east, and the other one is going west. So what?") was actually painted by co-writer Nicholas Pileggi’s mother. And Scorsese's father Charles also pops up as Henry’s prison compadre who puts way too many onions in the gravy. The large “f**k” count was mostly improvised, among the many things Goodfellas has become famous for over the 30 years is its liberal use of the word “f**k.” In all, the expletive and its many colorful derivatives are used 300 times. I dont know how this movie only went home with one Academy Award. You should react to "Casino" (1995) is another masterpiece from Scorsese, with De Niro and Pesci. Keep up the amazing work.

This is absolutely a cautionary example of why you don't to become a gangster, but a lot of people I know think they would love the wealth and the power and that they'd be too smart to make the mistakes that would get them imprisoned or killed.

I’m an 80’s WITSEC kid through my father. He relocated, married my mother, had my brother and I, and it took many years for use to finally acquire a stable living environment which included our schooling. I wouldn’t know exactly why that was until I was around 17 years old. Just because you leave that kind of environment doesn’t mean it’s easy to assimilate afterwards it’s quite the lengthy process.

I still can’t believe why this movie lost Best Picture at the Oscars to Dances With Wolves. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great movie, but it does NOT have the legendary film status that this movie does. Oh and fun fact: the scene of the guys cutting thin slices of garlic to melt in the pan is BS, Martin Scorsese admitted when he talked with Jimmy Kimmel that he just made that up for the movie, you can’t melt garlic.😂
Also before I ever saw this masterpiece, I saw the Community episode “Contemporary American Poultry” aka the Mafia Movie episode. And I can’t watch the scene of all the bodies being displayed while “Layla” is being played without laughing and think about that episode.🤣🤣🤣

Not sure if anyone mentioned but Scorsese’s mom and dad are in this. Mom plays Tommy’s mom and dad plays Vinnie, the old guy that’s in jail with them

This is the best mafia movie ever maid. I'm so happy to have both of you doing the review. You should do a man called otto or Defending your life. You would absolutely love both of them.

Fun fact: The cop that put Henry in protective custody was the actual cop that did the same 2 who this story was truly about...

What I think stands out about this mob movie is that it feels like the other half of the coin of the Godfather, which tells of how the mob viewed itself. Godfather, however, shows how we view the mafia.

14:46 - They ACTUALLY DID THIS IN REAL LIFE! They sat down and had dinner with Tommy's mother while Batts was in the trunk outside...absolute mad men!

And in this scene you see Robert De Niro use a ketchup bottle THE SAME WAY that Jimmy Burke did (Jimmy Conway was his real name in real life)! De Niro asked Henry Hill how Jimmy would empty ketchup out of the bottle...whether he would bang the bottom of the bottle (like I do 😅) or just shake it...but Henry said he would roll it inbetween his hands! 😂😂😂 they say method actors are mad men but I say that extra dedication to a craft can only be an admirable thing and something to admire! That's what makes actors like him, Al Pacino and Daniel Day-Lewis the greatest of all time!
And at 18:55 - they try to talk Henry around here, not out of sympathy for his conflict with his wife, but because the wiseguys were scared the wife would run wild and start talking about things to people they shouldn't be talking about!
And at 20:00 - this is the biggest falsehood I've heard about this life! Several former mobsters said they would sometimes get better food from the kitchen because of their status but someone like Henry (a non-made, half-Irish hoodlum) would NEVER GET TREATMENT LIKE THAT!
And 21:31 - that slap was improvised and the surprise on Liotta's face was genuine! This is what separates the men from the boys in terms of acting! They don't make films like this anymore! Name ONE FILM that will be as classic as this and will be AS MEMBERABLE as this in 34 years time!

What Vivian said about playing dumb to stay safe reminded me of Douglas Hegdahl, a sailor who got washed off the deck of his ship by a huge wave during the Vietnam War and was captured by the North Vietnamese and put into Hoa Lo Prison (nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton"). He knew that the North Vietnamese were routinely torturing P.O.W.s, so he played into their own propaganda that average American enlisted men (unlike the captured American pilots who were officers) were ignorant and stupid. He convincing them that he didn't know how to read or write and that he was too simple minded and easily confused to follow instructions properly.
Hagdahl's captors decided that he was so stupid that, even if they tortured him into collaborating, he would be useless to them, so they didn't bother trying and gave him a nickname that meant "The Incredibly Stupid One" in Vietnamese. The truth was that he actually had an extraordinary memory, so when , as a PR stunt to show how "humane and lenient" they were, the North Vietnamese wanted to release some P.O.W.s early (which most P.O.W.s rejected because they refused to abandon their fellow prisoners), Hegdahl's senior ranking officer ordered him to memorize the names and personal information of 256 P.O.W.s at Hoa Lo Prison and to accept early release so he could return to the U.S. and tell the government and P.O.W.s' families who was being held at Hoa Lo so the North Vietnamese couldn't just make prisoners "disappear."

    Yea, Paulie knew alright
Paulie agreed for ONLY Tommy to get whacked…instead of ALL 3 of them!
Notice you NEVER see or hear Paulies reaction to Tommy getting whacked?🤔
He didn’t set it up, but he ALLOWED it to happen, to save Jimmy and Henry
