- Train With 6 Locomotives Speeding & Passing New Amtrak Station! BIG CSX Coal Train Hoons Through The Railroad Wye At Big Sandy Junction. Engineer In Norfolk Southern Locomotive Gives A Wave And We See Ancient Chesapeake And Ohio Railroad Signals. A Caboose Is Seen Next To The Passenger Station In Catlettsburg. There are 5 trains in this video from eastern Kentucky. I took a random trip to eastern Kentucky to stop at a few places without planning anything out. This video is Part 1 of 2. A viewer gave me the term "hooning" which means fast.
First, we see a train with 6 locomotives heading eastbound at South Portsmouth, Ohio. I was driving through on my way to Catlettsburg, Kentucky and I noticed the Amtrak train station. I had never seen it before so I decided to check it out. Once I figured out how to get to it I decided to film it. Getting to it is not a straight shot. You have to pass it up and then drive down a long lane with weeds hanging out into the road. When I was filming it a train came so that was pretty lucky.
Then I went to Catlettsburg to see their train station and caboose. This is on the same CSX line and I got a good westbound train. Amtrak passes here 3 round trips a week but does not stop. The Amtrak Cardinal usually passes in the dark. Then I went over to Kenova, West Virginia before heading further south. I filmed these locomotives making a light move to the terminal along the Ohio River on the Norfolk Southern Railroad industrial spur. The CSX track runs along this line here. I got some other trains here also and they will be in Part 2.
Next, I drove along the old Chesapeake & Ohio Railway all the way to Louisa, Kentucky to film some of the old C&O signals along the line that are still in use. A few months ago I filmed a couple of other ones south of Louisa. This line was pretty dead so after a few hours I drove back to Catlettsburg where I had more of a chance to catch a train. After a little while I noticed the signals change and I heard action on 160.230. I got an eastbound and then a westbound train on the C&O line that I had been checking the signals on. Look how long the loaded coal train was! That was a good one.
I went to Ashland, Kentucky after that and caught a couple of trains there. They will be in Part 2 including a coal train with 974 axels! I was at the Amtrak station in Ashland. I noticed that when it starts to get dark there are a lot of homeless people there. Also, you will notice in Part 2 that they removed two of the railroad tracks at the four track crossing next to the Amtrak stop.
Filmed Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Good Morning Thanks for sharing 👍
Portsmouth is my hometown. Can’t wait to send this video to my Dad. Thanks Brian! 🤙🇺🇸
Jawtooth is on the move to provide us with new locations and trains. Only thing better is if he would come and cut my grass (lol). Thanks for the video.
JT, you have to start carrying a chain saw. Many times now you've had trees and in this case a telephone pole blocking your view. Also a good set of cutters for taking out chain mesh fence sections!😁 Avagoodweekend mate
Has the horse ever gotten a good bite on the pups? That will learn them😂
Boy howdy! Señor Jaws. Those Kentucky people have it all in one sock when it comes to new stations, conserving old stations, putting up a caboose... and bringing you trains... you name it. That first one with 5 locomatives and 1 DPU was smokin' fast... and creative with the placement of the DPU up front there like that. I vote we go to Kentucky more often. Not puttin' any other place down, but Kentucky kicks butt !!! Gracias por tu video. RT sends, Puebla, México...
💞💗💕💖 Great video friend fur babies so adorable filming perfect I enjoyed watching ❤❤❤
Many many thanks
You are one fortunate man
You made your train hobby.
In to a living
And your Wife support's it
Thank you for the shout-out JT!!
Shout out to PogoJoe, Greensboro NC! Love your videos, watch them every morning.. I’m 58, taking on an N Scale setup. Greensboro is known as The Gate City, one reason is the medium size Switching and separate Inter-Modal yard!
Great video, that 6 locomotive train was definitely a long one, that coal train was definitely big, love that NEW Amtrak station, I love seeing brand new train stations, Great catches
Awesome video! That station might be one of my favs especially because it’s next to the CSX office and the CSX line!!
Great tour de force of the area with some cool history. The trains were a bonus. Absolutely first rate, thanks JT!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Real interesting day. I miss the Rooster at the beginning of the theme. Thanks, Jaw Tooth.
Thanks for taking me along on your journeys to see parts of the USA, which I would not be able to see. Awesome footage of trains and depots and a COOL caboose!
Way kool caboose not only air horns but capola had backwards windshield wipers facing on rear windows ...thx jt
Thanks for commenting !
Great videos I enjoy watching them. I saw the video with you and shoestring the other day
Hey jaw tooth cool trains. You remind me of the song "I've been everywhere" . I bet you've been to every state watching trains. Have a great railroad day 🚂🙋♀️
❤ today’s choices of spots, lots of railroadianna around, B&O Signals, Sweet cabooses, stations! Well done JT!
that road with all them potholes looks like it would fit right in here with alot of our local roads in a similar state of disrepair, got worst in the last 5 years since we had a 3 local council areas combined into 1 to save money, lol.
Boy, that sure beats the "temporary" station they had there back in the late seventies. Even put a smidge of the old C&O look on the thing.
Nice to see healthy railroads ad lots of tonnage, especially coal. Thanks for sharing, Jawtooth! 🙂
thanks for watching !
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo comme toujours ! 🌟
Good morning. The centerbeam on the 1st train looked to be carrying a load of the wood products coming down from Jason Country.
P.S. The train in Cattletsburg, too.
Amtrak South Shore Station. It's a charming little station!
That was a cool fast train awesome 👍😊 Beautiful caboose! It's good you're recording old railroad train signals. Folks can look back and compare them with new ones as they are upgraded. Thanks. 😊 We hope Loki doesn't chase after your horse like Chessie. I believe it's a game with her. We really enjoyed your video. Thanks and take care Mr JT. ❤😊
Hi Jawtooth them locos are haulin ass.
Wow! Six engines and that train was booking! The new RR station is not old style, but it is still pretty cool. I think of how rare it is for me to even see a working train station and it kind of reminds me that I am getting older :)
Very cool! They sure had the power. Have a great weekend!
Wonderful video jt, the stations the caboose. Very cool
Awesome video with a dpu working hard but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
Thanks 👍
Super video JT! Nice catches make the wait worthwhile. It happens pretty often when one dog leads the other astray. I think its just in their nature!
🚂🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃💯👍🇺🇸
Awesome video Jaw Tooth and watching enjoying too and enjoy the side show too and beautiful country too 👍😃😎♥️
These small american towns are very nice
Fantastic scenery for the town adding up to spectacular train action!

🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🇺🇲💨
Yes awesome Jaw that freight train you caught to film was booking & making cool clackety clack rr track sounds
Glad you enjoyed
Here in Charleston, WV, the capital of the State, there are trains that are driven by remote control going from one yard to one or two businesses across McCorkle Ave, from the railroad yard. Most of the trains are very local freight cars to be loaded or unloaded at these businesses. Just thought you might be interested.
Yes, I am very interested. I stopped there one time while I was passing by and took a picture of one of the remote control locomotives. A couple years ago I spent the night there and watched Amtrak go by my motel window. I want to film there
Small towns, big trains. Thanks, JT, for making us all “Authorized Personnel.”
Thanks for your support!
Hello Jaw, another very nice video. South Shore Station's new "station building" looks very nice. The environment is also very attractive. here in Germany you only put a concrete cube or a combination of aluminum frame and glass surfaces. I personally don't like it. As a railway enthusiast, I prefer the older railway buildings. Greetings from Germany Wolfgang
Great video. I loved seeing a caboose with air horns, the Deleware and Hudson covered hopper, and the six loco lashup. Thanks for the capture!
"Hard to get the cat to do anything, it just lays around"🤣 Too funny Jaw Tooth!
Nice horn salute from the csx crew jaw tooth
Hey JawTooth
Another AWESOME video
Keep up the great work
And a shout out to Mrs JawTooth 👌👌
Very scenic surroundings. Wish I could visit.
Gorgeous part of the USA! Spectacular train footage today JT thank you. Greetings from the UK. ❤
Thank you very much!
That station looks just like the Amtrak station in Amsterdam, NY, near my house. There was a recent CSX derailment close by. Love your videos, Son!
It does! Since I used to live in Schenectady, used to shadow D&H, Boston & Albany, NYC, and in later years Conrail , Amtrack, NS, and CSX. LOTS of good lil restaurants for a great breakfast in Amsterdam!
What a nice small town quite. Nice 6 Loco fast train!
Thank you for the new videos JT, I really appreciate all the time you put in waiting to film these. That caboose was really cool.
That's a beautiful C&O caboose. 😊😊
It sure is!
Holy cow, 6 is a boat load of power. Nice catch 👌 👏
Thanks 👍
Great content. Great video. Thanks for sharing...
Awesome video and location's Jawtooth! Love the old signal's!👍
Great video JT. I really like those big GEs working hard, on our coast to coast Amtrak trip a few Yeats ago we stopped at Grand Junction for an overnight stay.
So I went to the station to see what was about. Lots of UP locomotives in store, but there were two GE helpers sitting waiting, one was idling so I used my cell ‘phone to record the sounds.
Unknown to me another of our group was across the tracks photographing the UP units, and because we were both late for dinner, got into serious wife trouble!
Quite the horn cluster on the C&O caboose.
Love those cantilevers!!! Thanks!!!
Amazing video Bud 😎
Good morning, nice video. Thank you
Another nice video today. A next variety of trains. Weather was cooperative. Enjoy your weekend, and see you on the next! 😊
Many thanks!
Great video, Brian. I wish you got to film an Amtrak going by the new train station. I love all your videos. Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍
One day I mite catch you out there somewhere. I go through Ohio and Kentucky quite frequently escorting oversized trucks.
Awesome!
You gotta wave your hand to get they're attention but you was holding the camera and great CSX catch. 😉⭐ Look at the Norfolk Southern crew to and from ohio river and I enjoy watching historical rail equipments.
Thanks for watching
Wonderful video my friend!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice little horn salute on that first train coming through Portsmouth
It sure is!
I think that's the same Amtrak that comes off the Indy sub thru Hamilton
Around 3 am then stops at Queens gate in Cincinnati. At least that's when it passes behind the house.
Must be they have my wheaties in one of those grain haulers.
Your video was like being on a field trip. Most enjoyable.
In my home town of Lexington NC we are in the process of building a new depot for Amtrack passenger service, not sure where the city is at in the planning process but I hear that it's coming 🎉🎉 awesome video 🎉
Awesome Trains JT!!!!
I've been along that CSX line from the Maysville, KY, Amtrak station to the Charleston, WV, Amtrak station.
I love the station! Will definitely put is on our Ohio list. Great video!
Another great video. Have a nice day 😊🌈
Thank you 🤗
Nice Catch of all the power
What a cool CSX mixed freight. I've never seen so much power on one train before. I'm guessing that is an oddity. Great catch JT!! 😊😊😊😊
Thank you very much!
Great comment, but I have seen trains with that many locomotives
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
Good video, thanks for waiting around. I don't always have the time or take the time to wait.
Pretty cool seeing that much power on a train although not all online. Some other great catches as well. Nice work JT.👍🏼😎😁😁great to see old C&O RR signals still in operation.
Great film as always 👌
Thank you for the video, got a bunch of places, pretty scenery.
Beautiful small station.
thanks for this. I had not seen the new South Shore station! Much improved!
Glad it was helpful!
Nice catches.
Some of them pot holes look more like sink holes. Lol
What an adorable train station in Catlettsburg, Kentucky!! I love it!! I always have to look up on google maps to see where you are. I love this area of the country and I have never been there! Hope to someday!! Your travels inspire me!
As I started watching this, a train came by the usually unused tracks near our house. I was focused on the video, and it took awhile to realize I had a real train to watch. 🥴😊
Very cool!
Thanks for bringing that new Amtrak station to us. I hope someone explains the fenced-in rocks inside the sidewalks there.
Thanks for watching ! One of these days I will get up really early and go over there to catch an Amtrak train..
Awesome video keep up the good work and be safe out there.
Thanks, will do!
@JawTooth your very welcome sir.
Blue Fred, no dpu and it WAS Booking! lol
You got a two-toot-salute at 16:40 😀
Nice Coverage
🚂🍂🇮🇳🚂🍂
Thanks Taslim!
Why didn't you ask them how long the station has been there? Geez! And when you ask what is the hurry it makes me think you think all trains should be snailing through. Fast trains are AWESOME!!! And South Portsmouth, Ky is in Greenup County, the place where my grandfather was born
.
Great footage! Thanks for sharing JT!
Small town train tour great video thanks jaw tooth
Wow! Amazing freight trains!
Nice video & nice catches
That first freight train was trying to replicate the old C&O passenger train the FFV. Fast flying Virginian then we had the compact DPU tràin and ending with the coal. Keep the tonnage coming!
1:25 that was awesome 👏
thanks
Awesome catches and great video
Thank you very much!
You're welcome
6 engines is wow. I have not seen one with 6 engines in a while.
