- Train At Railroad Crossing With 2 Abandoned Tracks, Fast Coal Train Over 200 Cars! 4 Locomotives Pull Loaded Coal Train In Ashland, Kentucky. Inside a caboose and inside 2 train stations. One station In Catlettsburg, Kentucky and one in Ashland, Kentucky at the Amtrak station stop.
First train is a CSX mixed freight with a Pan Am boxcar! I have seen a few of these lately. After that train we take a quick look in the train station and we have a close look at the 4 track railroad crossing. 2 of the railroad tracks were abandoned and removed. Then we see a train going in the other direction. This was a LONG westbound coal train. This train had 902 axles! It had 3 locomotives and 221 cars! The train was booking and was empty.
After a quick look at the flood wall murals and the train station we see yet another coal train! This was a loaded coal train with 4 locomotives running westbound. Check out that 4th locomotive. New paint and looking good.
The last stop in this video was at Catlettsburg, Kentucky. While we were there looking at the caboose a man came out and asked if we wanted to look inside it. Of course we did and it was pretty cool. The caboose has a cupola with seats in the top and has a stove, table, bathroom and everything you need to be a railroad conductor. The lanterns were really awesome. We also got a tour of the train station. It had a ticket office in the middle and waiting rooms on both ends. There was too much inside to list here so watch the video a couple of times. Lol. I rode on this Railfan trip with Scott @1960gambit and Ben @SD70AH. We also went to Kenova, West Virginia so make sure you check out the video that I posted shortly before this one and the one that will be posted soon.
Filmed Tuesday, August 29, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

My 92 year old dad, who is retired supervisor for CSX which was Seaborad Costline way way back loves watching your videos. Me too. Lol. Thanks again for making us smile. Dad estimated the speed at 60/65.
That is awesome! He had a really cool job and I like seeing videos of the Seaboard Coastline days. That is really neat that he watches my videos. Tell him thanks for watching and also thank you for watching my videos!
That train station looks in remarkably good condition for being 117 years old, really built to last for many years.
I wish they built them like that today. The new one that I filmed recently in South Portsmouth was nice but nowhere near as awesome as Ashland
@@JawTooth yes indeed, truly built with longevity in mind for the decades to come.
Gotta love the rail museum. it was 100% wonderful.
It really is!
I'd like to know the story on #4714. To me it was like watching a classic car that has been restored when it rolled by. From the new trucks and traction motors all the way down to the warning labels, and other decals, on the access panels. I've always loved the SD's and CSX did a fantastic job refurbishing this one. I guess the question is why they spent the money on a unit that is near the end of it's service life expectancy (by locomotive standards) ... that thing looks brand new, I love it! .. Always great content, JT, thanks. 👍
That rail was from Bethlehem Steel plant in Steelton, PA on the Susquehanna River just south of Harrisburg, PA. Always wondered how they got such nice lettering on the rail during rolling?
Thanks for watching ! I don't know how they do the lettering
I just saw this comment I retired from that rail mill. The brand is cut into the rolls When the rail is rolled it's red orange 1900 to 2000 degrees. And the brand is rolled into the rail. The brand is cut into the roll in the roll shop. Hard for me to explain unless you can actually see it
The empty coal train had 3 locomotives & 221 cars, equaling 902 axels
Wow, that is a good train!
Yep. Each of the 3 locomotives on the front has 6 axles which makes 18 axles. 902 - 18 = 884. Each of the bathtub gondola cars only has 4 axles. 884 ÷ 4 = 221.
& it was 2 miles long. I don't know how fast it was going exactly.
Outstanding railfan video, JT, thank you. Loved the historical content. Those who ignore history a doomed to repeat it. You don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been. Loved the Train Station and Caboose tours. By the way that 902 axle train was approx. 2.75 miles long. Thanks again for another great interesting railfan video.
I agree with you on the history. We need to learn from history and stop repeating mistakes. Thanks for watching !@@curtisdavis5556
Love Ashland Kentucky awesome catches
Have you even been to ashland Kentucky
Thanks for watching! I have another video from there to post also
Ashland Kentucky great place thanks for a caboose tour great train action great video thanks Brian and Scott
Glad you enjoyed it
Super shiny CSX loco. Awesome
Sure is!
super cool vid sir - thank you. Love the old stations, nice trains (and you were absolutely right, I was saying, "hey, there's a Pan AM box car!" when it went by.) That blue road bridge in the begging is interesting too - never seen a bridge that color.
Cool, thanks, they have a side walk on it. I dont know if its still open to walk over but I would like to film a walk over it
More great CSX trains in Kentucky, a nice yellow caboose
a big train museum, the pets and slideshows Thanks Again
Jaw Tooth for your videos.🤠👍

Thank you too!
I just LOVE that 1906 train station in Ashland, Kentucky! That's how they used to build. It is beautiful inside and out, perfect in proportion, AWESOME! So was the fast coal train! I got used to the really fast speeds in, for example, Dunkirk and Selkirk areas. They routinely FLY through there! From having timed many of those "hotrod" trains, the Ashland one (Brian, I think you're totally right) went every bit of 50mph. I've clocked many at 60mph, a little scary! I echo the voice of our presenter and ask what's the hurry?! Great stuff in Ashland today!!
Back in 1998 I was watching NBSR going west with 4 units so fast the cars were tipping to the point on the curve I could read the end car numbers.
Nice museum and caboose tour. That last train had a nice set of locomotives in the lead.
Yes indeed!
Great video today JT! I really enjoyed seeing inside the train station and the caboose. That was cool. Thanks. 😊😊❤
Nice Video! I Always Love Them And Always Will!
Thanks for watching ! I was watching Unstoppable on tv last night
Not only was CSX going fast that train was SUPER long! Great catch JT! 😊😊😊❤
I counted 221 cars!
At 2'11" I saw that Pan Am car, only found out today that CSX's former owners were literally Pan Am whilst watching a Peabody street running video 📹 last on the line video.
Finding things out for the first time in New Zealand 🇳🇿.
Thanks J.T for Ashland Kentucky, have a great day ❤
Very cool!
@@JawTooth thanks 😊 🙏, only just reading about how Loki came into your life, condolences further to Sophie's passing.

I was actually railfanning here toward the end of June of this year and caught CSX 3194!
Awesome!
Been a while since we saw Ashland. Thanks for the lookarounds, always interesting. Great live action too 👍👍👍👍 🇬🇧
Thanks for watching
Great coal train action! Cool museum too! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
The railfanning at Ashland, Kentucky was good on 29 August 2023, Jaw Tooth! The two coal trains were amazing to watch. The tour of the Ashland, Kentucky depot is a large building. The ticketing and waiting area are large and looks well maintained. The rest of the building must have been used as a freight house. Is the Catlettsburg, Kentucky depot owned/operated by a local historical society? When you toured the Catlettsburg, Kentucky depot it looked like it could be used for meetings. I noticed a screen that could be used for showing a movie or for a slide show. The caboose at Catlettsburg, Kentucky gives a clever idea of how the crew of the caboose lived. I liked all the lanterns on display in the caboose.
That was really sharp looking new power on the CSX coal train! 😊❤
Loved this train video, especially with the old train station! 🚂🤠
Thank you for showing this, that train station was preserved and it really looks incredible !
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a long coal train, awesome live action.
Gracias por tu video, Señor Jaws. Nice view of the Ohio River. Have a great Saturday and the rest of the weekend. RT sends, Puebla, México...
Thanks, you too!
Love the action under the bridges!
Pretty amazing to see a long coal train with only three locomotives in the lead consist.
It sure is!
Yup, 230 hoppers on the coal train. Yeah, I reckon it was near 50mph. The other CSX consist with the new locomotive looked neat. I guess business is picking up. Looks like a busy spot there, with the Amtrak sign as well. I'm seeing a lot more fast passenger services on the other channels too. The track being reduced from 4 tracks to 2 is never a nice thing to see but I guess if it isn't needed anymore, c'est la vie. Great video as ever Jaw Tooth. Keep safe. Cheers!
There goes a SUPER SHINEY new CSX, NICE!
Good morning nice video
That Caboose look pretty good.
Run Forest run nice coal train it moving at a pretty good clip well got to get back to work awesome video.
Robert
Good morning!
Counted 228 wagons! That's a long train. Great catch JT.
Thanks!
Ashland is one of my favourite places to watch the trains, always plenty of trains fast ones too. The station is fab too alot of history there over 100 years old & looks amazing . How cool was that caboose? I would have picked the high seat for the best view awesome video JT. ❤😊
Nice bridge 🌉 happy holidays from Indiana love your dog s and cats love train 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚃🚃🚃 horn 📯 sound good 👍 keep up the good work ❤
Happy holidays!
The Horse looks at Loki like 'You're new here, Right?'
Thanks for watching!
@@JawTooth No Problem! Not A Lot of Train Action here in My Town, Even though I can Hear them from My House.
221 coal hoppers blasting through Ashland Ky. Nice old train station also.Still watching, however, great video up to this point.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome two coal trains and tour of depot and caboose JT!!!
Super like 👍 fantastic video my friend, have a nice new week!
2 flared radiator SD70Mac's 4713 and 4730 on the coal train. CSX is the only railroad that has them. Great Catch! JT!!!
Thanks for the info
Glad they rebuilt that station, preservation is Key, Great !
9:15 Four coal engines with lightning bars pulling a coal train. Impressive. Now days csx pullls any freights with lightning bars.
The BC Railway had cobooses that were set up like a motor home. The reason is there could have issues such as slides or snow fall. So supply’s for up to two weeks. The railroad also had very few signals. They used radios and time tables. Steven Sipes
That coal train was bookin! In that second coal train the fourth loco looked brand new!
Wow, 902 Axles .......Three Engines and 221 cars!
JawTooth
Another Awesome video
Happy Labor Day Weekend
Thanks! You too!
❤❤❤❤😊 Awesome video JT, amazing catches the filming was perfect always love your fur babies I enjoyed watching stay safe and healthy ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Cool trains - was CSX 4714 a new or newly refurbished engine? Either way it looks spiffy! I liked seeing the inside of the caboose, it would have been fun to have taken a trip sitting on one of those elevated seats. Great video - thanks, Jaw Tooth.
You can tell because if they are rebuilt cause they have a sticker saying “HUNTINGTON SD70AC overhaul
I've noticed on Jawtooths videos that CSX seems to keep their locomotives a lot cleaner than some other railroads.
The UP locos in my area usually look pretty rough. I realize that dirty locos pull just as good as clean ones, but it's kind of an image thing.
Always enjoy your trivia like the track rail information.
That empty coal train was awesome and a long one.
Indeed!
Those cabooses bring back good o memories. You don't see many of them on the rails anymore like you use to back in the days before FREDs, defect detectors, & dragging defect detectors.
Liked the tours ! Liked the dogs at the end too
Cool location Jawtooth! Nice old train station! Cool bridge's and great catches!👍
Many thanks!
Great video as usual JT 👍👍
Thanks 👍
I like the Ashland train station, especially when the guy comes out of the bathroom/offices area. He is looking up to see what you were videoing. Glad to see no one mistook you for a first amendment auditor causing trouble!
Same here! I think about that all the time when I am filming. I don't just dwell in one spot staring at people though. Lol. If anyone asks what I am doing I always tell them and get nice conversations going.
As you said, no cat this time. Pup is now bigger! Hey, thanks for another great train video... it was good to see inside the station and caboose!
Glad you enjoyed it
Pam-Am was bought by CSX last year. CSX is putting down welded rail across Maine in hopes of bringing back passenger trains again. Hope it comes true.
Very cool! I remember reading about the sale in Trains Magazine. I hope the blue Pan Am boxcars remain for a long time
If someone told me that the Maine Central & Bangor and Aroostook would BOTH be gone 50 years ago, I would have laughed at them. B&A had the best Bicentennial paint scheme for ALL railroads across the country.

Awesome video
Thanks!
Wonderful video, awesome train station, and caboose, thanks so much
Glad you enjoyed it
Engine 4714 is so new there isn't even dirt on the trucks yet. Nice😊
Fresh rebuild out of the Huntington shop.
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
Glad you like them!
Love your videos, Brian. That little rant was because I ripped my toenail clean off four days ago on The base of a bookcaseand I am feeling a bit pained at the moment as I can't leave the house for a week. Frustration can cause Snappy responses to people. Sorry, friend Brian. Your channels is till one of my favourites.
❤❤ Too cool JT! I love it! Thank you! 👍👍
Thank you too!
Awesome catches 👏

They were booking! Hooning! LOl
Great catches and awesome video jaw tooth
Thank you very much!
Whoa, that one was bookin’. What is the hurry! 😊
Awesome video keep up with a great work and be safe out there.
Love them coal trains. Not too long ago they were king
I think the current station was the freight house. The station is a bank if I recall. Really nice old station too. A couple blocks away.
He is correct. Passenger station was a much larger building a few blocks away. Now is a PNC Bank. Worth taking look.
I grew up in Ashland. Used to go to train station in the evening to see The George Washington and The Big Sandy passenger trains. The were both steam engines in the 50's. We're parked side by side at station.
The Pan Am car was a cool catch! Start the video, son!
You got it!
Awesome video but wait there’s more 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
Nice ❤️ 👌 👍 trains I remember I used to work in a caboose like that had the key 🔑 gave them a tour
Thanks 👍
Cool catch man love the vids
Thanks!
This is only the second time I've seen where you got a train with over 200 cars.
On the second train, I counted 221 cars flying on the tracks.
Live just a few minutes from there and my neighbor is a CSX engineer. I've caught a few good ones there. Great vid.
Very cool! I bet your neighbour has some interesting stories to tell. I wonder if he watches videos on UA-cam of trains
@@JawTooth Oh yeah, he's been there over 20 years, has some very interesting stories. I don't know if he watches them like I do but he does know who you and Shoestring are. Maybe one of these days I'll catch you around here or the Fort Gay/Louisa area, where I'm originally from. Keep up the great work.
You have a nice truck Jawtooth

Jaw Tooth. Would like to recommend Quinnamont WV right next to Prince, an old mining and railroad community with a wonderful history like that of Thurmond. Good place for filming. Near to Beckley.
