- Sex work is a way of life for thousands of women in marginalized communities in certain parts of rural India. For many, it is the only way to make money - also due to the Indian caste system and centuries-old prejudices which make it difficult for the families to escape poverty. But winds of change are blowing.
In certain Indian villages, sex work is, in a sense, inherited. Mothers and grandmothers have already worked in the same trade. In the past, they mostly belonged to ethnic groups that worked mainly as performers. The British colonial power criminalized them, and to this day it is especially difficult for the men of these ethnic groups to find regular jobs. Therefore, the female members of the family are often the breadwinners. They are the ones who take out loans, build houses, make important decisions, which is otherwise rare in India. Our reporters Akanksha Saxena and Neerat Kaur looked around the villages - and found signs of hope: The young generation is trying to leave this sad tradition behind and fight for better education and rights.

Caste was banned under Dr Ambedkar's excellent secular constitution in 1950, but as usual with the Indians they just ignore the laws that they don't like, and corruption plays its part too! It is what it is.

Even only fans, as horrible as it is, is still a “choice” for most people. These women in India don’t have a choice and for many it’s the ONLY one. That’s the difference. It's disappointing how Indian people and the government have failed to recognise the struggles and create systems for seamless integration of historically nomadic tribes of India since independence and even in modern India. They have always been an important part of Indian culture and society, but it's sad to see a day where they have to struggle to feed their families and access education due to their caste (nomadic tribes). We can’t really blame government. Its these people who have failed. There are many who struggled and uplift their living from zero. These people are lazy and leech who choose to live like this and play victim and sympathy card.
Nomadic has nothing to do with caste system, firstly tribes weren’t part of caste system. They were openly welcomed if they visited any town or village. So I don’t know how we were not integrated before. Yes british pushed them in jungles even further. Read about that, when their land was commercialised and sold to outsiders.

It’s terrible to have prostitution villages.
But they (DW) won't talk about the issue in Europe because too many of the abusers and racists are immigrant Muslims while the victims are native European girls. Why are they (DW) ignoring the child sexual exploitation cases in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Norway, and Sweden, etc... hmmmm. The data clearly shows that immigrants are vastly overrepresented. This is why they won't investigate the problem. 89% of groomers in the Netherlands have an immigrant background, and 60% are Muslims, while most victims in the Netherlands are Dutch girls, not immigrant girls. The vast majority of victims in the UK are British girls, not immigrant girls.
That's what the Japanese had during WW2, with trafficked women, something they still don't acknowledge today to its Asian victims. "Comfort woman" aka sex slaves in the front lines.

Great reporting! A friend of mine in Florida is a florist and works occasionally doing weddings for Indian people. You'll be surprised to hear that those wealthy Indians living in the US spend over $100,000 just in flowers. I've heard that some bills go over $250,000. I wonder if those wealthy Indians living here do some volunteer work in India to help the lower casts. That's another topic for DW to explore. Cheers.

The second woman does everything it takes for her daughter not having to follow the same path... Yes they might be able to earn what is considered above the average salary in India but for what price... It's obvious listening to the second girl her soul suffers doing this kind of work... They don't do it out of the whim and for selfish reasons... they have been trapped inside the system that was sustained for decades, centuries.. they are its victims and yet heroes.. more than you'll ever be.. so you stop your nonsense comments and get some help

Perhaps that's the privileged sections. The same goes with discrimination against blacks in the US. Many don't prefer to acknowledge it as if it has never existed(exists)

When slavery is introduced by an outsider it never lasts, but when your own people betray you it can become a tradition. Same in all parts of the world.

Look at all the lowly jobs such as street sweepers, manual scavengers all are given to the Dalits. caste system enforces strict endogamy. Honour killing of couples who dare to marry outside from from their caste is still not uncommon. Caste system is against love.
The people who deny that cast system doesn't exist or it is practiced sporadically come from the oppressor caste who enjoy the privilegeds of the Caste system
They are not prostitutes because of their caste ,
They are lower caste because of their prostitution work
I used to work with Christian Missionaries in the red light area at my city in Nagpur.
I used to cry at times seeing their suffering and the diseased (3/4 women there had HIV or Hepatitis-B).
That was during my teenage years, I'm twice that age today -a Software Engineer.
I wish if people treat them humanely, most of them are pushed by extreme poverty & trafficked under the pretext of jobs and this network is global and mafias controlling it in a global nexus.
Just because we don't live under those circumstances doesn't mean that we should deem them any less than us as human beings.
Today I sow a beggar woman with a baby. I didn't help her because there are many reasons. Some are real criminals
