- 101 East investigates the dramatic increase in South Korean men marrying mail-order brides, up from almost none a decade ago, overturning centuries of prejudice against interracial marriage and creating a wave of cases of divorce and abuse.
More than a third of South Korean men in rural areas married foreign brides last year. While some unions are happy, the industry has also led to sex trafficking, domestic violence and murder.
Authorities are cracking down on illegal agency activities but the Korean government is facing calls to implement a stricter screening of interracial marriages.

There's a difference between guys and girls. Guys want to be the provider, and biologically, they can have children at an older age than women, so an older guy and a younger girl makes sense biologically. Emotionally, it works out if they both love each other and treat each other nicely.

Interesting hypothesis Ms Colley. I wonder for what percentage of unions that this rings true? Yes mixed marriage children are pretty (and healthy/resilient). I have a couple of Eurasian teenage boys myself. It's enjoyable to see both races in them although it did cause some identity issues in their younger years (as they were viewed as westerners by asians, and asians by westerners)

In SOUTH Korea, it is very acceptable for South Korean men to date and marry outside of the race. At the same time, it is completely unacceptable in South Korea for South Korean women to have a boyfriend or husband who is not Korean. Also, the women who marry South Korean men are completely expected to learn to speak and be literate in Korean and acculturate themselves into the South Korean culture.
I never lived in North Korea, so I do not know what is acceptable there.

Philippine is a nowadays bigger market for a bride.
Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand seem to have the biggest market for Asian brides nowadays. Actually, I think the Philippines has been big for a while now. I remember reading a statistic that said Filipino brides were the most common foreign brides in Japan, although I think that has changed in the past fifteen years or so due to changes in immigration policy.

Korean women are gorgeous. I'm from the US, young, not truly successful and rich but I live on my own without assistance and only 1 job so I'm not killing myself daily.
I immediately disliked the 45 year old because he doesn't want a "headstrong" wife. If I were to contact an agency like that the first priority is honesty on the woman's part, you cannot have mutual happiness without honesty.

I'm sure the story being told is true, but on 15:07 the translations for the Viet woman about her alcoholic husband is completely off. In almost exact translation, she's actually saying the reason she got married n moved over to Korea is so that it would be better for her family implying that it would relieve her family from the burden of supporting her and also so she could help them eventually (probably from extreme poverty). Before this she lives with her mom but because of their situation now she has to be far from her family. Never mention the husband, any drinking issues or abuse. Not dismissing that abuse happened, just though it was interesting how 101 East would get that translation completely wrong to something that fits the narrative well. Makes u rethink the narratives on some of the other videos from 101 East.
16:06 interview is the same part of the interview as 15:07. It's just cut and paste a little differently so it sounds different, but it's same. The translation changed from the last one on 15:07 and they're still not translating what she says painting a different story.
There's nothing wrong with looking at income. One simply needs to recognize the trade-off of wealth for youth. Easy money also leaves easy.

Men see korean women as second class citizens and are quick to criticize them if a woman speaks her mind. Korean women have to sacrifice everything their bodies and their freedom for marriage and childbirth. The law does not protect them from violent and mysogynistic men. They take on roles as both the housewife and breadwinner. They have every right to have certain expectations preventing them from entering into slavery.

There's no problem if anyone would like to marry a foreigner, especially from a different ethnicity as it will improve the gene pool. However, it is not right for anyone (be it a man or woman) to marry someone and treat them as a possession. They're not a tool or thing but in fact, someone who's willing to share their life with them. I feel so bad for the lady who wanted to further her study. Who said that education is only for man? It's for everyone, regardless of the gender.

I speak Vietnamese and many of the clips used while interviewing the Vietnamese women doesn't match with the english translations. For example, the 19-year-old was talking about how her "husband wants a son and she wants a daughter, so they laugh about that, etc.", but the english translator was talking about how she was worried her marriage wouldn't work out. I don't know where they are getting these sound bites from, but they should at least show the clip of the woman saying those things, unless they're just making these brides say whatever they want the news piece to say.

I am not surprised, they probably say whatever they want to make everything sound more grave/ supporting their story. They know that their main audience (US, Canada, UK, Europe, Australasia) doesn't care about these people or the real issues, they just want to see how the rest of the world (Asia, Africa) is always doing bad things. Talking about how bad other places are gives them a false sense of superiority. Very rarely would you see Aljazeera or a wester controlled TV channel doing a positive story about Asia or Africa.
A husband that commits one act of abuse will do it again over and over. Walk away the moment one abusive behaviour happens.

Cheese Pie actually I met her my senior year in high school. She was a junior and the prettiest girl I have ever seen. I was poor and she had a money. Our first 6 years together I was dirt poor 😂. She treated me second to god. She never asked me for anything. She pushed me to be better. We built everything together. Been poor and broke together. Today we own 2 separate businesses and have 6 kids. I’m putting 3 kids through college. I worked harder then everyone else because I love her and want the best for her.

A round trip ticket that's good for 5 years should be part of the marriage contract. Why stay unhappy. The government should stay on top of this and be concerned for the bride, not just the fees earned and remittances. Physical and mental exams for both parties without exceptions. Please note that there are guys and some gals who should never get married; that's OK too. What's not OK is when the other party's life is miserable or worse is ended.
They do in Australia to an extent. They check to see if they have enough money on there own rights to get home.
