How many 5 star matches did the Attitude and NWO era have?
most of the AEW matches meltzer rates as 5 stars really arent. HBK vs undertaker at mania 25 that was 5 stars. Angle vs Taker at no way out 2006 was 5 stars, So was Angle vs HBK at wm 21. Meltzer is a indy mark and New japan mark. Having watched new japan, I know wrestling and america enough to know that for the most part that style doesn't sell here if its your go to presentation. New japan is faction heavy and its all about the wrestling matches with little to no storylines with the characters outside of the matches. And AEW leans heavy into that presentation model. A match with a lot of moves that lasts 40 minutes isnt 5 stars. Its about the story telling of the match. Hence why things like Austin vs Bret at mania 13 should be 5 stars. if i am rating by 5 stars. Then 1 star matches sucked. 2 stars were average to borderline suck. 3 stars is ok to good. 4 stars is good but not great. And 5 stars are the ones in my mind i never forget ever. Having seen wrestling weekly since 1993 i have seen more matches then i can even say. But i have forgot most of them. If they were good i remember parts of them. But if great i remember nearly all of it. Like right now, i could not tell you any match that took place at Wrestlemania 33 aside from roman and taker and i only remember that because of the reaction Roman got the next night on Raw. AEW only ever did a handful of matches i saw when i watches that i remember. Cody vs dustin, Christian vs Omega for the impact title, Cody vs Brodie lee, punk vs MJF, and that first stadium stampede match because it was lulz. I remember parts of Moxley vs Jericho and Moxley vs Omega, and Baker vs Thunder rosa. The rest of AEW was background noise. And i havent watched it since December 2022.

If you take a look at Halloween Havoc 1997: It set up a new Buyrate record for WCW with a 1.10 meaning around 400,000 buys. Why did people buy it? Was it because of the 4 1/2 star match between Rey and Eddie or was it because of the Hogan vs. Piper main event, that got a "DUD" rating? Obviously it was because of the latter and that alone shows how absurd, meaningless and idiotic the "star rating" system itself is.
I'm laughing because right or wrong, Eric finishes going off on Meltzer and Conrad just goes, "Okie-Doke! Let's move on". There's no other way to cap a rant.

If someone told me Angle was their favorite, or he is on their Rushmore I would nod. Maybe not agree to it, but I could definitely understand. If someone said the same about Moxley I would be way more skeptical of it.

Moxley doesn't even make the top 25, and I'm being very nice. I could name probably 50 wrestlers better than he.
The problem with the deathmatch style Mox wrestles is that it becomes straight up slapstick if done too often. Look at ECW and how Tom and Jerry those matches became. I think Mox has a good character and is decent enough in ring...but he needs to tone down the blood and guts stuff and bring it out when he's involved in a blood feud, not a TV match on Wednesday.
I never get tired of Eric burying AEW because it is all true, he is saying the exact things that most sane wrestling fans feel about AEW.

Angle vs. Benoit at Royal Rumble 2003 is a 6 star match, in my opinion. Angle vs. Michaels, Wrestlemania 21 is easily a 5 star match. Those are just two. Kurt Angle is undoubtedly one of the greats. That's why Meltzer's opinion is worthless.

Not remotely. My buddy is a huge AEW and wrestling fan. I think the actual wrestling is more entertaining on AEW, but their booking, promos.....what fans want is WWE storytelling and promos, polish on the tv product, but a bit of AEW's style of wrestling.

Because they were believable angles/stories based on real life shit that the people could get lost in and believe. It just so happens that the WWE is more believable than AEW right now and thats a wild sentence i never thought I would say as a day 1 aew fan.
Hardcore AEW fans pretend like their product is “real pro-wrestling” but its really just a parody of it. Everything is done for laughs, memes or just for the pure absurdity of it. Also a lot of those matches didn't have the heat. Textbook Swerve Hangman. You don't have follow up matches after a Death Match. That should've been the feud ender. Instead, you've taken gas out of the feud and knocked down the stakes and danger of the Death Match.

Jon Mickey having higher rated matches than Kurt angle is not only an indictment of Dave meltzer but if wrestling culture. One is a world class athlete and talent, capable of delivering high energy matches, cutting scathing heel promos, with a high degree of believability and legitimacy, and the other is a trailer park wrestler from Ohio who can’t beat one dude in a low level jiu jitsu tournament that’s part of a British mixed martial arts stable where nobody there is from Britain and nobody is successful at legitimate martial arts. I’m not a huge Angle mark but I don’t ever want to hear the names Jon Moxley and Kurt Angle in the same sentence ever again.

I had to stop it just to comment because I just KNOW Conrad is going to hate this. You can't bury his only source of information. Because that means that he has no credibility. And if Meltzer has no credibility, then his biggest mark doesn't have any either.
On the tag team stuff, the blueprint is there from the 70s, 80s and 90s on putting teams together and booking interesting programmes... Its really not that difficult but for some reason nobody is able to get FTR in a proper feud that pays off... Also, put guys in teams and make them actually dress like a team!

There were fans rating matches in that era. It was called message boards. Also in no other industry do i see people so obsessed with ONE critic. Not in movies or music. It's so odd how one dude's opinion makes the wrestling world so upset.
