Every wrestling UA-cam channel repeats Dave Meltzer like Gospel. WhatCulture, Wrestle Talk, Wrestlamia, etc..... They repeat Dave's opinion as fact and have no opinions on their own.
That's why I get mad when people defend Dave by saying "he's just stating his opinion" or "people should think for themselves". If Meltzer gives a match 7 stars it's going to have a trickle down effect, every wrestling youtuber is going to post about it and soon enough people are going to get persuaded into thinking that way. And if you dare have a difference in opinion you get called a "mark" or "cornette stan". Dave has done more harm to the culture of the wrestling business than anything else. He's single handedly convinced fans that characters and storylines don't matter and that it's all about "workrate" and trying to have a 5 star match.
To be fair this is a general problem with people with beta mindsets who have both a low self-esteem and a desire to be popular. These people will always cling to anybody who has a position of authority that will validate that what they like is really the best and any other position is game to be attacked. Here's the problem with meltzers star rating system. Yes, it's his opinion. Most of us know this. There are however A LOT of people that don't get that. So if I were a new fan of pro wrestling and wanted to look up "best wrestling matches" I'm more likely to find any Kenny Omega match instead of Hogan vs the Rock. More likely to find a young bucks match instead of Bret Hart. Only for 1 reason. Meltzers opinion. Which then gets regurgitated on every mark site and mark UA-camr site.
Meltzer's star system is weird to begin with. Even if it was Cornette using it, who exactly designated just how much actual quality a match or storyline has based on quarters of stars? Dave, to my knowledge, has never properly explained his star system to anyone in which a valid consensus could be agreed upon by both he and whoever he explains it to. I'd really be interested to know why he thinks Omega/Okada was on par with Flair/Steamboat with his rating system.
There's also the fact that Dave massively inflated the stars he gives out so much that when you see 5 stars you're not even sure of the quality of the match at that point

I used to think when you see people just verbatim repeating the exact same line from some review or reporter might be bots. But then you realize in plenty of these cases, some of these people really are just that much of a doormat.

I've watched wrestling for 30 + years now. I have always taken Dave Meltzer quotes/news with a Grain of Salt.
I'm really enjoying the 83 Weeks Podcast. I thoroughly enjoy hearing Eric's views and opinions. He's direct, but not a jerk about it.
Yet for 30 years, crabby pro wrestlers made it seem like Eric was the biggest jerk. I assume muscled up dudes are really babies.
I'd argue Dave Meltzer and The majority of the wrestling media damage wrestling more than they help build it.
Personally I'm only interested in actual facts of events from wrestling stories and Melterz only provides hearsay and gossip. Credibility is a must!

Here's the problem with meltzers star rating system. Yes, it's his opinion. Most of us know this. There are however A LOT of people that don't get that. So if I were a new fan of pro wrestling and wanted to look up "best wrestling matches" I'm more likely to find any Kenny Omega match instead of Hogan vs the Rock. More likely to find a young bucks match instead of Bret Hart. Only for 1 reason. Meltzers opinion. Which then gets regurgitated on every mark site and mark UA-camr site.
Meltzer's star system is weird to begin with. Even if it was Cornette using it, who exactly designated just how much actual quality a match or storyline has based on quarters of stars? Dave, to my knowledge, has never properly explained his star system to anyone in which a valid consensus could be agreed upon by both he and whoever he explains it to. I'd really be interested to know why he thinks Omega/Okada was on par with Flair/Steamboat with his rating system.
There's also the fact that Dave massively inflated the stars he gives out so much that when you see 5 stars you're not even sure of the quality of the match at that point
How come Conrad gets to play nicely here? He'd routinely clam up on Bruce or get downright haughty if anyone tried criticising Meltzer in the early days of STW.

Comparing Uncle Dave to the National Enquirer is like comparing apples to oranges. Everyone knows the national Inquirer is for entertainment purposes. I know they even had disclaimers at one point. The difference between the two is that Uncle Dave presents his things as facts. In modern times, some of his things aren't even his opinion. For instance, it has been a couple of years since the Young Bucks have had a match that was rated less than five stars. Not even Bret Hart was rated that highly. Or Ric flair. Dave Meltzer is not a real journalist. As a aspiring journalist, the journalism boy scout rule no. 1 is that you never fabricate your facts or bullshit. Your commitment is to the truth. Meltzer is opiniated and (love it to death) AEW. At best, Meltzer is a commentator. As a journalist, I keep things objective and I do not tout myself as an expert like Dave. I learned at college that if you tout yourself as an expert, or someone who acts like they know more than the actual person ( like Meltzer), real journalists and readers will be having you for breakfast.
