These body shaming videos are weirdest marketing strategy for me. I feel so bad for the “ugly” fish that I low-key want some of them out of pure sympathy.
Then again I was that person in the lab that begged the professor not to kill this shrimpy deformed zebrafish because I couldn’t help but admire his determination to live (I struggle with some disability too, I just didn’t have the heart to hurt that little fighter). I named him “Funky Fish”. His back was tilted upwards and crooked, he swam very weirdly (often looked like he was corkscrewing), had to figure out his own way to eat by kicking up flakes that fell to the bottom while the others ate at the top like they were starved tiny piranhas, and used one of the filters to hold himself in place to rest since he had some troubles with buoyancy sometimes, but dang it he was a fighter! Half the time that I saw him I was worried that he was dead or actively dying, but he was always fine! Survived two water change disasters that killed dozens of healthy fish. Sadly he was taken out when he bonked into the magnet glass scrubber during a vigorous tank cleaning, but it was a swift end on impact and I’ll always remember him fondly.

@@schizopenguin It was kind of funny in hindsight. Survived so many things that should have killed him, only to be taken out by a swift bonk with a scrubber during a regular old cleaning. It’s like the achilles’ heel of Funky Fish.

my boyfriend got rid of me after my back injury too so I was sorted to his ugly pile. My goldfish tank is full of the ugly pile too but I love them and their personalities are perfect and make me smile everyday.

I own a low quality lionhead ranchu from the local fish shop. He acts like a high quality, his audacity truly knows no bounds. Anyone hanging out in his track gets bulldozed through and he follows around the loaches to eat the food they find. Has a distinguished square orange moustache above his lip, basically zero wen (yellow color wen) but it is a little puffy. and he is mostly yellow/white with bits of orange. Bumpy spine and unimpressive but still cute tail.
If you can't afford high quality ranchus yet, they still all act the same ( : I love my lionhead ranchu because of his personality. But I did recently add two medium quality mini Cleans to the tank! He finally has his own kind. The little ones are way cuter than him but they follow him around and kinda copy him, it's adorable.
It is roughly 4:30am and I am learning how to body shame goldfish
Anyone else just wanna have them all, whether they're "cute" or "not"... cause let's face it, they're all adorable fishies... lol

I know back curve is desired in ranchus, but I like that streamlined look on that 12:10 fish.
I think that I display very well how a lot of the traits considered 'good' or 'bad' in breeding is just about rarity and such because I thought all of these were beautiful and adorable, and I have no idea about how ranchus are supposed to look. All I care about is whether the fish are healthy or not.
Confirmation (how the fish looks) is all about health. These fish are bread so short and round that their back needs to be curved properly so their organs have room to function properly.
The low-quality tank is basically the more natural looking carp tank

I already spend a few hundred bucks on supplies for my other fish so I can move them into some new, larger tanks and get a blackwater tank sat up for a betta fish I really like (personality. Really sweet betta fish), but I'm still interested in getting some of your fish at some point.

I wantched this at my Cousin some months ago and it was the most calming thing ever.
How much are those traits correlated to the goldfish health? Are all of the traits purely cosmetic or are there some qualities that would negatively affect and hurt the fish?
Old but since you never got an answer:
The spine curvature is mostly related to health. The rest is more or less cosmetic so long as it doesn't go too far. There are "healthy and pretty" and "healthy and ugly" spines here. Most of the really unhealthy traits would've been culled long ago though.
Note that breeders are all about the cosmetic appearance, and that is what the standard is for. The judgement of if they are "ugly" or "pretty" is based on the breeder's set standard. Fitness to the standard is what determines quality. I don't know Luke's full standard, but it includes spine shape, maximizing wen growth, and the chubby bellies. He also wants bigger fish, not smaller. Fin size and colouration don't seem to be his priority. Adherence to that standard is everything that being a breeder is about. Even if he subjectively liked a fish, he's using an objective measure of appearance and quality for the purposes of his breeding. He'll be filtering these again likely for the rest of their lives always keeping the most fit to standard fish to breed and then selling those who fall behind. He likely also keeps his personal favourites, putting them in other tanks after they get retired rather than continuing to breed them. This is a business after all. It is also possible that his standard might change as he decides he prefers and can get better sales by selecting for something slightly more strict. Like he might decide that he wants larger rear fins, but only mid sized fore fins to allow them to still be able to swim properly as well as to help make the wen look larger while still having big beautiful tails. Such a change in priority might suddenly reclassify all the pretty fish he owns as he begins working on that new standard. Fish breeders are constantly adjusting their standard to get ever more stringent as they get closer to their current standard of breeding. All animal breeders do so.
Lower quality will be sold for less as he says, but most interestingly other breeders might see desirable traits in some of these lower quality fish or they might grab them to improve genetic health of their stock as their own breeding standard might be slightly different.
For example another might be prioritizing fin size or colouration over wen growth, or they might be trying to pull their own breeding stock back from "over fitness" which is when a cosmetically desirable trait goes too far and damages the health of the fish, something that is an ethical concern and many breeders try to balance against. There are also times when someone is trying to CREATE a new breed, so they are trying to grab anything remotely close to their desired traits to start to select their way into that breed. Differences in priorities could cause something low quality to Luke to be high quality to another breeder. For example if I was to imagine a standard I wanted to breed for, let's say breed for large wen, large fins, but slimmer body then several of the ugly here would be more desirable to me because I'm looking for something different.
This takes me back to when I was in high school you have the sporty friend and then the friend that is more nerdy never ended up on the same team

I once had a beautiful 3 fanned sarasa comet goldfish. It was my mums fav fish and then one day it died. Meanwhile the shubunkin we had that had faulty swim bladder lived for years.
I love them all bar one or two. It's funny, although I love the chunkier ranchu, in my limited experience, the ranchu with the longer bodies have better longevity from having more organ space. Most of my ranchu have ended in dropsy 😔 despite good water and diet etc. Although I'd pick for breed specifications like you, I'd also cull for quality of life plus breed cuteness. So slightly longer bodies plus the good 90 degree tail. Wen growth ech. I'd say its a ranchu vs a lionheads. Both are good
