- Now you can hear a full range of the sound capabilities of the new ARP Odyssey (by Korg), brought to you by an accomplished keyboardist and synthesizer programmer, Moot Booxlé. No EQ has been applied to the direct signal, just a bit of compression via LA-2A, and a light reverb.
If you were on the fence about buying one of these because you hadn't heard any actual musical sounds being created on it, maybe this will help!

I was going to do a more "technical" overview of this synth, but when Marc Doty (Automatic Gainsay) got one, I knew he'd have that covered, in much more detail than I ever could! He's great at explaining that stuff.

Thank you very much! That was exactly my goal with this video - to display how easy it is to get a huge variety of sounds from this synth once you get used to its layout. It seems really random and un-intuitive at first, but actually is laid out in a really logical way, and is really easy to program live onstage!

Do you have perfect pitch?
If you want to do something like go from unison oscillators to a 5th apart to an octave apart in the context of one piece it seems hopeless?
There's a video on here somewhere of Rick Wakeman saying that's why he never used one.
+phlattgetit I thought it would be a real problem when I first got it, but it's not at all! I don't have perfect pitch, but I do have pretty good relative pitch. If I need some weird interval, I typically just turn it down really low and tune it up before the song starts. If you watch my latest video "Floating" I demonstrate seamlessly tuning/programming during a song. I find it funny that Rick used those temperamental Polymoogs but wouldn't use an Odyssey! ;)

@mootbooxle: I like a lot your style of playing! It's all about this certain funky vibe! Especially your scale-runs and chord-runs in between. For example at 09:25, you're playing them all the time :) Also your runs in the rhodes-phaser comparison-Video I like a lot! I'm learning myself jazz-funk type of stuff on the keys, but I'm always struggling with these fast runs all you cats are playing...I guess it's all about the fingering. Perhaps (if you have time) you could do a little video of your fingering in slow motion of your lovely runs..a lot of guys like me would really benefit from it! Thanks a lot!

I almost couldn't care less that it's not the original article (just like I could hardly care less that my Roland JX-8p isn't a Juno 60). This demonstration rocks and only makes me long even more for one of these puppies!
I almost forget that there's no preset memory, since the patching seems so effortless.

Christian Schonberger Thanks very much :) The more I use this synth, the more I love it. A lot of features in a small package, and it's stable enough that I can use it on gigs without fear! If I remember correctly, the reverb I used on this video is Logic Space Designer.

you could probably trade yours for a white one, if you could stand to be without yours for a little while! I was happy that the classic colors didn't cost any more money.
yes I know, that I could, but right at the moment I don't want to miss it, I wanted to preorder the white one, but when I saw the estimated delivery time, I made the decision to take the standard version.
And yes its pretty cool that Korg sell the limited editions for the same bucks:-)

This might be a fun 5th or 6th keyboard-after a good digital piano, organ and a couple of samplers and polyphonic synthesizers. For performing, this might be fun to add fill sounds. For pure sonic exploration I would sooner build a modular wall one component at a time.
I think this might have convinced me to finally buy one. You should get paid by Korg to do these, it's more compelling than any of their videos. By the way I noticed the whiteface edition (which I think looks much better than the standard one) has smaller sliders. Do you find this to be problematic, especially in live performance such as this?
Wow, that's awesome! I basically did this as a response to the crappy demos I've seen of this thing, beginning with the NAMM show! There have been very few people who seemed to really understand how this synth works (I'm looking at you, Rich Formidoni). I would love it if Korg took notice of what I'm doing...hey, it's happened before!
About the sliders - I find this original Mk1 color scheme to be much easier in live performance. I play this synth all night at every gig. The slider caps are not as tiny as they seem in pics. There's plenty to grab hold of! Cheers!

Are you going to get the full size now that it is released? Would match nicely with your Moog :-). I know you had no problem with the smaller keys.

Hi, great video! Would you suggest getting the Karp? I was curious of the build quality as well. I'm torn between that and the sub phatty moog. What would you say is better?
Dee Patrick I can't recommend the Korg ARP Odyssey highly enough! It is the most versatile, best-sounding synthesizer you can get in its price range. In nearly any price range. The Sub Phatty is a nice machine, and well-built, but isn't as flexible. I will say this: I've played this Odyssey 3 hours a night, 3-4 nights a week, in all kinds of venues over the past year and a half, and it is showing no signs of wear or failure!

Hey Moot, I hate to have to bother you with a technical question. I can't find it in any of the literature or online. For the authentic Rev.1 response and sound is the little button portamento mode supposed to be out, showing blue or pushed in showing dark?

To tell you the truth, I am not sure, because neither one of our Mk1 Odysseys at the studio are working correctly at the moment! I will let you know once we get them repaired :)
phlattgetit I think pushed in. This means the portamento engages when using the octave up/down switch. Think "summer madness" by kool and the gang. This was the default behaviour of the early models by my understanding
+Bill ambrose You're absolutely right Bill, I don't know why I didn't think about that! Summer Madness wouldn't even be possible without that transpose portamento trick! Good observation.

So! What's your favorite filter?
The 4023 (2-Pole which you seem to favor) 4035 (Moog copy) or the later 4075 (ARP 4-Pole)
+Adam Borseti Sorry I missed this comment before. I prefer the 2-pole 4023 most of the time (as evidenced by these videos), just because it has that classic, distinctive ARP sound that I love from so many classic records. I do like to use the others more now, in certain applications. The 4035, combined with defeating the duophony and the retriggering of the filter, can make this synth sound very much like a classic Moog, but in a way, I feel like that's defeating the purpose of having such a unique synth! I have other synths that sound more like a real Moog, when I need that sound. They compliment each other really well.
The 4075 is great for thinner sounds. You can get a really convincing Solina sound with this synth using that filter.
I've been hunting for the rev1 since day one and you still can't find one in Japan! It looks like the wait will be extended to July or August...
hajimmie wow! I am sorry to hear that! It's a bit ironic isn't it? Weren't they shipped to the States from Japan? I would have thought the Rev1 and Rev2 would have been available from the beginning there!
mootbooxle Thanks for your reply! I've JUST got a call from a store and they said rev1 just has been released in Japan and I'll get one for my pre-order finally! Korg being a Japanese company I thought this delay was odd tho (we've got stuff always fastest - like volcas MS20s and so on)

At times, the keyboard under the keys you're playing looks like it's above the keys you're playing, and then it's like your hands are going through the keyboard, myaaaaan.....
Trippy! You can definitely see the difference in the key size when it's right next to a "standard" keyboard.
Yah, the larger keys is one reason why the bottom keyboard looks like it's on top.

I tried the black one in guitar center in Jersey...and the small keys ...i didn't dig the feel...It is inspiring to get one ..watching you play this demo!! was the small keys a factor for you? did it take time to adjust for you to get used to playing it with smaller keys...although it looks and sounds you were born with this instrument in your hand!! lol
Barry Rubin Thanks so much Barry! About a year prior to getting this synth, I bought a harpsichord, and practiced on it several hours a day...The keys on the new Odyssey are the exact same size! It took quite a bit of practice to get good at the smaller keys and light action of the harpsichord without it being clam city, hitting two keys instead of one etc...So when I got this, it took me maybe 30 minutes to adjust. I play my Odyssey at every gig now, 3 hours a night, 2-3 times a week...so by now it is like second nature! I appreciate the kind words man!
+Barry Rubin if you have talent and the dedication to practice, tiny keys are not a deal breaker at all.
Was it easy to get along with the mini keyboard?
Yes! It's not mini keys like on small Yamaha toy keyboards or like the Reface series. It's somewhere in between that and full sized keys - very playable. I actually prefer it for certain things!

A bit late as an answer to your question, but I tried the keyboard version in a shop and I thought the keys were really good. I went with the module version in the end, which is what I'd originally intended, but I did think about getting the keyboard.
If you want to play fast, the slimmer keys probably help speed you up, once you get used to them. If you have really wide finger tips, they might be a problem though, I suppose.
People play different sized string instruments and don't normally complain about the "mini frets" on their ukulele being too small, compared to their bass guitar. Keyboard players are fussier, for some reason :)
The brain does adjust to similar things having different controls though. A good example is phones and calculators - all phones I've ever used with a keypad have 123 at the top, and all calculators I've ever used have 123 at the bottom, under 456. Until that was pointed out to me, I probably hadn't even noticed. I'd certainly never thought about it.
I noticed you stayed on the rev1 filter the majority of the time and never used the rev 3. I also noticed you kept the filter drive switch on the whole time.
Is that on purpose or just an oversight?
I just got my whiteface and so far haven't liked anything I've found with the rev 3 setting yet. I'm not sure about the drive switch?
phlattgetit I just really like the Rev1 filter the best! It's that liquid, old-school Odyssey sound I'm used to hearing from so many classic records! It definitely responds very differently to other filters. The Rev2 setting is nice, but much more typical Moog-style, which is something I enjoy a departure from! And I agree, the Rev3 filter is not as useful. Kinda nasal sounding! Sometimes it's great in arrangements though. I keep the drive switch on all the time, because all it really is is a volume boost! I was using the XLR output, which is much quieter in general. What's great is that the synth is nearly noiseless using it!
After a year and sending one unit back and getting a different whiteface I've changed my stance on the rev.3.
I actually like it really well and of course the rev.1
it's number 2 now I can't find much use for.

When you use filter key tracking but play two notes at a time, which note is being tracked?
TooSlowTube great question! The filter CV amount is always low note priority, so it will always track the lowest note being played.

It seems to be hard to avoid a drop in volume, playing two notes together. I thought maybe it just restricts what you can do with oscillator levels, but if the notes are too far apart, the lower one will be closing the filter on the higher one...
I can't help thinking it would have been better to do it the other way, and track the higher note. I know Korg were aiming for authenticity, so that's how it's meant to be though.
Maybe the monophonic patch, with CV Out to CV In is a good way to go then.
TooSlowTube sometimes I use the Odyssey specifically for the duophonic stuff, but most of the time I'm playing it monophonically. You said it, there are lots of limitations when it comes to this type of fake polyphony. You have to modify your technique quite a bit, and any sort of long release sounds really odd. Being able to select low/high note priority on the filter tracking would be cool, wouldn't it? So many little things I want to eventually mod my Odyssey to do. Imo the dumbest feature on the thing is the resetting LFO. I can think of almost no situation in which resetting the LFO on each new note is useful on this type of synth. I'd love to have that on a toggle switch!

I think I'd settle for full time high note tracking of the filter, so the high note doesn't get muffled.
I expect the LFO reset thing is one capacitor from Gate or Trigger... or maybe one from each. Modding it for a switch should be simple, apart from the soldering...
I'm not sure I'd dare, because I'm not good enough at it. My hands aren't steady enough. I desoldered the SMD clipping diodes from a guitar overdrive pedal and mananged to tear off a bit of the track, at one end. I worked around it, but I'd hate to do something like that to my Odyssey module.
Having played with the duophony a bit, I think I'd settle for full time monophony instead. I might do that, once the guarantee runs out - that parts easy enough. I should be able to add a switch for high note or low note priority too.
Since the CVs for the oscillators are produced by the CPU board, it seems to me they could easily add a last note priority option in the firmware, maybe switched by sysex, so it doesn't need a physical switch - like on the Minibrute.
I assume the keyboard Odysssey does it the same way, i.e. the keybed doesn't produce the CVs, it just talks to the CPU board. There can't be too many differences between the module version and one you have - it would make it too expensive to produce.
One thing I'd like to change physically would be to add a separate slider for key tracking and pedal filter control - I want to use both at once, not have to choose one. I'd settle for one being on a pot. I could probably handle the soldering for that, because it would just be tacking wires on and maybe cutting a track or two - that part of the circuit is just a passive mixer.
TooSlowTube the low note priority of the key tracking is one of the quirks that make it charming IMO...nothing really comes close to capturing the sound of an Odyssey!

Ioannis Kazlaris they do wiggle a bit, but not enough to feel flimsy or cheap. For what it's worth, though, the sliders on the new module version are MUCH stiffer, if that's your preference !

Are you talking about what I call 'diddly widdly' playing? Kind of random jazzy tuneless fingerings? Does my head in. Sorry if that offends anyone, it's just my opinion. I just don't like demos with all that. You virtually never hear it in a track, unless it's prog rock.
I think it's great! The playing and the tweaking compliment each other perfectly, in my humble opinion. And, we need more examples of such fluidity these days, not less.
When it comes to synths on yt, that's what you get. Guitar like shreds or the hobbyist's loop of boredoom. I have to say that as a sound demo for the odissey, it works pretty well, he does go places.
because its not music, you have to be patient when playing or recording a song, it gets boring really fast. once in a while especially with new instrument its fun to just try things

is it midi ?
It has MIDI in, and a USB connection that you can use to control a computer with (or vice versa). It only sends/receives note data - no slider info.

adding slider info over midi is much more complex than most people seem to think. you would have to change so much in the schematic, that it wouldnt really be an odyssey anymore
