- St. Canice Cathedral Kilkenny is walking distance from Kilkenny Castle in Ireland. Its main feature is the 9th century "Round Tower". It is one of only 3 round towers in Ireland that you can still climb to the top. It is not an easy climb so if you are not sure of foot, I wouldn't try it.
St. Canice Cathedral Kilkenny itself dates from the 13th century. It is the second longest cathedral in Ireland, second only to St. Partick's in Dublin.
The beauty of Kilkenny is that once there you can see pretty much everything on foot. We started our day at Kilkenny Castle, then Smithwick's Brewery, Rothe House & Garden and ended the day at St. Canice Cathedral. All can be found near or on High Street.
As you can see, the St. Canice Cathedral Kilkenny is beautiful and you can get some amazing views of Kilkenny from the top of the Round Tower.

Going up the stairs on the tower was a great adventure and so worth it!!!
Not for the faint of heart.
I climbed up to the top of this tower in December 1961, when I was a Christmas season guest of my fraternity brother Mike Smithwick. His home was at Kilcreene Lodge in Kilkenny. We were both students at C. W. Post College in Brookville, Long Island, NY. I remember that it was a difficult and scary climb, but the view from the top of the tower made the effort well worth it.
