Omg i got most of these coat of arms in a scrap book i got from my grandpa William Butler, so cool! He was a green Beret in World War 2 and came home to be a successful photograph and had one of the few small advertising companies to win an Addy Award.
I'm a descendant of Col Richard Butler. I'm always looking for more information on my family history and enjoy meeting other relatives. Great video and very informative!
Thank you so very much. Well, I work as a lecturer at Ireland 101, which works to bring family members together. If you haven't visited the site, I would recommend it. www.ireland101.com/
I'm glad you mentioned that tenants took the name Butler, bit of nuance is great when talking about surname origins in Ireland. The intersection of Norman and Gaelic attitudes to family/tribe is an interesting topic! Gaelic tenants may have taken the surname of their new 'overlord' (like they would their former Gaelic lord). Not that the nuclear family really existed at the time. Family was clan orientated, however the Normans were introducing English/continental style feudalism at the time(must have been very confusing for the ordinary people). The Butler's like other Anglo-Norman notable families would eventually embrace Irish and Gaelic culture wholesale however(different economic relations though).
I’m very new to all of this and taking an intro into sociology at school now and was very interested in my last name after reading about a last named article ! Very interesting to know where my lst name could’ve origins
Should have explicitly pointed out that Thomas Butler,7th Earl of Ormond's dau. Margaret was mother of Thomas Boleyn,1st Earl of Wiltshire & Ormond, who was Queen Elizabeth I's maternal grandfather. 👌👍
I’m a Butler, but I’ve got to trace my family tree back farther. I’ve only gotten back to the civil war, so I don’t know when and who brought us to America
I’ve been enjoying your UA-cam videos they are full of interesting and useful information. Thanks! (I am a descendant from Butler Clan to some degree because I have some Butler ancestors incorporated throughout both maternal and paternal lineage.😊
My grandmother’s father (I believe he was the son of James Butler 3rd Marquess of Ordmonde and his wife was lady Elizabeth Harriet Grosnevor ), and was the rightful heir to the marquessate of Ordmonde, as well as the duchy of Westminster and the earldom of Ossory instead the marquessate of Ordmonde went to Arthur Butler who sold it off to the irish government in the 1960’s, and the duchy passed on into somebody else in the family, the earldom of ossory still exists I believe, with Thomas Butler- although I doubt he exists, I didn’t get that from the most reputable source.
My maiden name is Butler, but as my late Dad was orphaned aged 8 and then adopted (keeping his Butler surname), little is known about our ancestry on his side of the family. My Dad used to say his family tree was more like a bramble bush 😄 This video was very interesting and informative, thank you.
Fantastic video! So says this Cloughgrenan Butler! Interesting side note on Sir Edmund's escape from Dublin Castle in 1569/70 with Fiach MacHugh O'Byrne's help - Edmund subsequently had an affair with Fiach's wife, resulting in the birth of Sir Thomas Butler, 1st Baronet of Cloughgrenan. Gratitude, eh?!
Thank you!! Wow, He seems to have been an amazing character, could be worth covering, There were so many interesting things that i just wished i could put in the video, but the video would have been to long, this was by far the hardest video the Butlers seem to have been involved in everything 🤣
I was raised on 17th Richard Butler Viscount Mountgarret Estate in Nidd Village , in North Yorkshire . When my parents moved to Nidd , Nidd Hall the family seat had servants !! I have just learnt of a Butler Dynasty !! I never knew. Goodness me ... I grew up with these people... !!
I never knew they owned this property as they bought it outside of my area of study so thank you for bringing it to my attention, i have a great fondess for North Yorkshire as my mothers side hail from there so i often enjoy seeing links with Yorkshire and my native Ireland.
Anyone know any history of the butler family that came from the azores island saint Michael s my last name is butler I grow up in USA like my dad and grandfather but my grandfather family came over here from the azores anyone know any history on that
I intend to cover every clan and family of Ireland, Scotland and more, is it the Scottish or Irish branch that you descened from? I shall put them on my list, i still work full time and have to study so i can't give timelines just the promise i will get to them.
@@Clans_Dynasties i descend from the irish, i tried looking up information about them, but there is not much information about my ancestors that i can find unfortunately.
Wow this video is fantastic. Every line is a point. Your channel deserve more subscriber. According to my account your channel is the best channel on UA-cam I liked your channel very much. Your channel is my favourite .I liked your all videos. Please keep up this type of work in future please. Your all videos are stunning. I am your old subscriber from 50 subs But can you please make a video on Skanderbeg?
Thank you so much for all those compliments, i am really grateful for all the support, i have been in talks with people about expanding this channel or creating another to cover further afield like the tribes, clans and dynasties of the world this would obviously include the house of Kastrioti and skanderberg, i dont want to take on this project without having access to the correct sources so im am presenting a fair and accurate account of the history.
As a noob, i/we would like to really understand/see what it was like back then, the clothew, the day to day life, the feelings and work habits of the people Was it braveheart with the lords wearing a cape terrorizing the dirty locals?
I have a channel called the Historical Podcast, this will cover topics like that, what era are you looking ? as fashion and technology changed alot over the centuries.
You are very welcome and the shows do not represent factual clothing at all neither do games such as Assassins creed Valhalla, it is a shame as there is some amazing Norse and Irish clothing from the early to the late medieval period that really could work visually for television and cinema but for some reason is overlooked. There are some great living history groups on Facbook including Wilde Irish and Claiomh that show off this period in history if you wish to see some of it, Claiomh is an Irish government supported project well worth a look.
African American Grandson of the Butler Dynasty! Not sure they would be as proud as I am to be a descendants of such a powerful dynasty. But, I am. Legacy is important. Descendent of Richard Butler (1500-1571) 1st Viscount Mountgarret.
I must admit my view on the Butlers before was that they were more unified than the other families of Ireland, which led me to believe that was the key to the success of the family, After reasearching them more indepth it has completely changed my view.
@@Clans_Dynasties You're welcome I have to find my notes so I can send you an email about my mom's maiden name I narrowed it down to a few possibilities that you had on the battle video a bit back
Many families were unfortunately dispossessed of their lands whether this be because of Anglo-Norman lords or later English and Scottish settlers and just as often Native Irish families but we have to remember the middle ages were a particularly violent time for Ireland, I often envy people who know so much of their own personal family history my surname has no such history.
Lol, Thank you very much!!, i really appprecaite it, Please feel free to put suggestions forward here or on the facebook page and i will try and add them to my list of videos to do.

Thanks for your research and this video, I'm a butler and after a recent DNA test have started tracing the roots back to Ireland.
