I ripped all the sound deadening out on my turd with no desire to refit it. It's a moisture trap. Mind you, you've clearly gotten lucky and it would appear your car has spent a good part of its life in a garage away from the elements.! It looks remarkably good. Mine was like that with exception to a rust hole behind the fuse box but other than that it was mint and I was surprised Regarding the fuse box removal, this is a bit of a job to do. Since bmw decided to fit the entire body loom in one piece from front lights etc to the rear lights running through the entire car via the passenger side sill area, branching off at intervals to supply things on the opposite side with no split joins inbetween so no easy removal.! So it's interior out, carpet out, dash out to do it right. As i said, body loom runs the entire length of the car on the left side (passenger rhd) and branches off to supply things on the right. Starting at the rear, the loom runs from passenger side across the rear panel to supply right hand lights etc, runs through the rear bulkhead behind the rear seat, branches off to the right under the rear bench to supply fuel pump (also down and out to the rear for dif speed sensor), branches across the front floor pan to the transmission tunnel to supply window switches etc, then across the front behind the dash to supply things there. You can remove the loom so far and cut a few ties near the bulkhead to enable you to pull the fuse box out slightly but to remove it totally you have to feed the entire body loom out through the bulkhead to remove the box. PITA Not the greatest design on bmw's part I say Cheers Ant
Cheers Ant, I think you must be right about this one being garaged for a large chunk of its life. I'm pretty sure I'll be putting the deadening back in though, its in good condition. Thanks for the detailed explanation about the wiring and fuse box. What were BMW thinking?! I suppose they never intended for it to be removed... From your description, I think I might be better off working out how to prop the fuse box and wiring to one side so I can paint around it rather than removing it altogether. You've been a great help with that, thank you! 👍
Brilliant video for e30 owners dismantling their cars. Cannot believe how good the firewall is. That car must not have seen much rain or damp. My firewall rusted at the grommet where the wires enter the cabin and the first signs are a wet passenger floor carpet.
Thank you! Yeah, I've been super lucky with this E30, to be honest. It's had a few rust issues which I've repaired but it generally turned out to be a solid shell. Which was really unexpected considering how beat up the car looked from the outside. Hopefully, it'll keep on being good to me! 😁
Thank you mate, I'm really pleased so far. Dreading getting underneath to clean and inspect the floorpan, but here's hoping I continue to be lucky with what I find. 😁
Glad the firewall was OK, wish mine was as good. To remove the fuse box you'll have to remove the interior of the car. All the internal wiring has to be pushed through the bulkhead. One of my next jobs on the list! I might have a repair panel you need for the driveside front inner wing beneth the washer bottle.
Cheers Mark, and damn, I was afraid someone would say that about removing the fuse box! I really do not want to take that dash out if I can avoid it... 😅 And I don't suppose you have both side repair panels do you? I think both need attention, unfortunately. 😒 Although I have been lucky elsewhere, so I can't grumble too much. I'll know more when I take a wire wheel to it I guess.
Really happy to see that this isn't a rusty turd! Excellent work with the content as always pal - makes things so much easier when I inneviteably do exactly the same jobs as you but about 3 months behind! Mines slowing down now, read end all painted and arms on the subframe, but haven't found strong people who want to lay in the rain and help lift it up to fit just yet! but hopefully once it's back on I can atleast take it to a welder to sort out the massive holes in the rear arche :)
Thanks man, yeah I'm really over the moon with the condition of that firewall, what a result! Ahh yes, working on a driveway in rain isn't enjoyable. And with the arms on does make it very awkward as I'm sure you've found out already. You could try using a jack on one side, and getting under the other, but you'd have to be lucky for it to line up doing it that way. You were having an issue getting the arms to fit back on with Powerflex bushings installed. I take it you managed to get that sorted in the end?
@@SPANNERRASH yeah the arms went on a lot easier after I'd slept and had thought about it some more. Also the additional help of a crowbar and grease the slide the bushes in did help 😂 Atm I've got a spare pair of axle stands and buckets that I'll use to hold each side while I lift with the jack, hopefully it'll be alright! I'm currently looking at an RX7 as another project car, but I don't need another car to be broken all the time 😂
@@Keats.Garage Nice one glad you got there in the end with that. Threatening it with a crowbar often helps! 😂 The axle stands etc sounds like a good idea, if you were local I'd come round and give you a hand with it. Ahh nice! An RX7 is a dream car. But hope you're confident in rebuilding a rotary engine. 🤣
@@SPANNERRASH yeah it's hard roping in volunteers this time of year 😂 but hopefully I'll manage by myself! As long as it's not rusty I don't think I'd mind!
Haha I think it's only the hairline which gives it away! 🤣 Cheers, plenty of other small bits of rust to sort, but really not too bad on this E30, a good shell.

You have to cut the loom going to the back of the car.
Im impressed with your resourceful ingenuity, my guy used a freaking fork as a rivet remover. 😂 props.
Hahaha! Gotta work with what you have! 🤣

I am so jealous watching you tearing apart the whole car and dreaming of one day driving it with a 6 pot inside. Good work m8! Greetings from Greece.
Thank you Marios. That first turn of the key for the M52 can't come soon enough mate! 😁
+1 for fork mate!!! defo gonna use that. Always enjoy your work, keep it up!!!
Haha it's a surprisingly handy tool, cheers mate! 😃
Turn the wheel ramps around it’s making it a little bit safer
That's a good point, I'll look to turn them around. But trust me the car is solid in place currently! 😃
Love the BMW trim fork 👍🏻
Cheers Matt, it's a particularly useful tool, especially at lunch time. 😂
😂😂
Fantastic project!
Cheers Frank!
I'm so glad you found the engine bay and chassis to be in such good shape! Great car. Great video too. Very helpful! 👍👍

Working on a total stripdown on my E30, and that is totally rusty turd. No one in their right mind would fix that car :).
Isn't it odd than once you remove car parts they suddenly turn into annoying obstacles!? Like the exhaust for example.
Its amazing how much space a car can take up once broken down into parts. Never enough space!
Don’t know what you’ve been doing but that beard has taken years off you 🤣 Great video though. Looks like you’ve got a good base to work from
