  • How To Remove BMW E30 Engine & Gearbox [M40B16] Motor & Transmission Removal Guide | 027
In this E30 build episode, I pass a huge milestone on the project, and I make the biggest move to date towards my M52B28 engine swap by pulling out the M40B16 motor.
Removing the engine from an E30 was easier than I'd anticipated, however it did take a whole day of relatively focused labour to complete. Here is the engine removal checklist I promised in the video:
    1. Drain coolant (and oil if you like)
    2. Remove coolant hoses between engine and radiator
    3. Remove the radiator by undoing the top bracket and sliding it up and out
    4. Remove the fan clutch - note the reverse thread
    5. Remove the airbox and MAF etc
    6. Remove horn
    7. Remove radiator front duct
    8. Remove alternator
    9. Disconnect the power steering pump from the engine
    10. Unhook fuel and brake booster lines
    11. Disconnect heater matrix pipes
    12. Remove wiring cover
    13. Disconnect throttle cable
    14. Remove intake manifold support bracket to gain access to electrics
    15. Unplug all electrical connectors from the block
    16. Disconnect starter motor electrics
    17. Refit manifold bracket
    18. Remove coil connection
    19. Remove the earth strap
    20. Remove exhaust manifold to downpipe nuts
    21. Remove the clutch slave cylinder from the gearbox
    22. Remove gearbox support bracket
    23. Remove prop shaft bolts through the guibo - turn shaft with rear wheels lifted
    24. Remove shift knob, gaiter and disconnect reverse switch
    25. Unhook shifter linkage
    26. Raise the rear end of the car
    27. Strap up engine securely
    28. Position engine crane and pick up tension
    29. Manoeuvre engine and gearbox up and out of engine bay
From the above list of steps to remove and engine and gearbox, I think the biggest pitfall is removing the exhaust nuts between the manifold and downpipes. These are quite inaccessible and notorious for rounding off.
And here's what I used to help me do the job:
    Folding Engine Crane: ebay.us/WlKh1M
    Dewalt Big Impact Gun: ebay.us/l0Zzp8
Using a big impact gun and a 12" extension gives you a relatively straight shot on these when removing from an M40 motor. If these round off for you, your best bet will be to saw the exhaust off instead, as access is very tight.
If you can do this part, and you have access to an appropriate engine crane and straps, then the job is relatively easy.
I used a folding engine hoist and strong seat belts from one of our other projects, this worked a treat.

Awesome thanks so much mate! Really hope the vid helps you out if you're pulling an M40 from an E30. 😃 I made it the video I wished I could have watched before I removed mine.

Absolute legends, although as I don't have an engine crane and i have imagined how i would take the engine out, i would have done it beneath the car with a car jack lifting the engine and trany combo.Well done though!I can't imagine how that M52 will sound.Cheers from Greece.

Thank you mate! A good way to do it might have been to raise the car but drop the engine and gearbox down. If I had a 2 post lift that would have definitely been my preferred method.
Alas, there's not much headroom in my garage so we had to make do with the hoist. All worked out great in the end through. 😁

Excellent stuff as always. Quick Q. When you disconnected the AFM plug (the electrical connector you unscrew at 6:24) there's another connector attached to that wire. Did you unplug this already or was it loose? Mine isn't connected and I don't know if that's an issue! Can't find anything that shows where it's meant to go.

    • @SPANNERRASH

Hi Toby, well spotted! It was unplugged already. That plug doesn't plug into anything on this E30 316i. I had a 318is a few years ago with the same and remember scouring the internet to work out what it was for.
Can't quite remember what I concluded off hand, something like an emissions thing we didn't have in the UK. Hope that helps put your mind at ease.😁

@@SPANNERRASH Blinding. Thanks mate. Really appreciate the response. It's not the only loose plug I've found, but this is reassuring! Have to find another reason why I'm losing revs and stalling if I go from park into gear. But only when the car is warm!

that shifter linkage clip is affectionately known as the "bitch-clip" in the e30 community. Whatever engineer thought it was a good idea probably worked for GM

Hahaa! 😆 Yeah its not their engineer's finest work, that's for sure! Very fiddly.

Great video !! I need a favor if is possible, i have the same engine m40 and i have idle promblems, is it possible for you with a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the throttle plate and the throttle housing ? Thank you in advance !! Hope to hear from you soon !!!

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Рік тому

Hi mate, I had a quick look at the M40 engine when I was in the workshop earlier today for you. Obviously the throttle linkage is not connected to anything any more so is fully closed on the spring.
There is literally zero gap between the plate and the body housing, not even the smallest feeler gauge gap. Hope that helps.

@@SPANNERRASH Yes definately helps , thank you so much for looking that for me !! The previous owner of my car messed with the throttle plate stop screw and now i am trying to find what is the correct gap to adjust , in the bentley's book says it must be around 0.04mm gap (but doesnt refer on m40 engines only m20 and m30) also in forums some people say that it should be a kinda big gap so to idle. But i saw in your video that your stop screw is not mess up (as it has still the paint on it) so i will listen you and i will adjust it to 0.04 as betley's says which is basically like zero clearance. Thank you again for looking that for me !!

@@vagkos3060 No problem at all, I hope it helps you get your M40 idling correctly again. Mine ran pretty well to be honest, idled well, so if you set it just the same I don't see why not. 👍

@@SPANNERRASH Hello my friend , i have a quenstion for you , so i replaced my belt that goes to the power steering pump and i saw that the shaft of the power steering pump has a small play in and out, is it possible for you to look that on your on your power steering pump so i know i have a bad pump ? Thank you !!! Also if you remember my old comments the problem in my car was the intake tube , it had a big hole in the down side so i couldnt see it , finally i replace it and the car idling correct now.

It's my first time removing an engine and gearbox, maybe finesse comes with experience! 😂 Mines actually Tizianrot (Titian Red), but the paint is in very bad condition. The M42B18 is a peach of an engine, lots of fun to rev. Cheers!
