    I feel like this is one of the most revolutionary and at the same time one of the most underappreciated synthesizers ever created :( I can't understand why it never gained more popularity.

      I don't think it was because of the price. Instruments like the Fairlight, etc. also cost a lot of money and were therefore not affordable for the mainstream. Nevertheless, they find their buyers among professionals. The VL instruments have the "disadvantage" that the sounds are calculated mathematically and not with samples as usual. Therefore, without a lot of knowledge about it, you can't change hundreds of parameters to create new sounds. That was and is too time-consuming and the understanding is missing. Jean Michel Jarre didn't have a ready-made sound and had to experiment a lot in the '70s. 20 years later, folks were used to pressing buttons and selecting or editing from hundreds of sounds. That's not so easy with the VL devices. Therefore, the laziness of musicians was the death of mathematical sound synthesis.
      I would never give my VL1-m away again. Regards

    I have an EX-5 and a software editor that allows me to manipulate all the parameters of the VL engine to create my own sounds. It is the most unique synth engine I've ever used, and I've used it to create sounds that I've never heard from any other synthesizer. I can only imagine what it would be like to play with the full engine in the VL1. My dream would be a modern VL engine with today's computing power and a comprehensive software editor.

    Incredible Japanese masterwork, this machine....perfect looks, perfect design, for those days so very unique. It was obvious from the start, the VL1 would reach only a small group of 'sound-lovers'. Wished all synths were built, standard, with these looks. How I hoped that every new synth on the market would have their strict 'own' sound...but how unfortunately!

      indeed... in a German magazine I heard demos on a CD, it sounded awesome!

    • @marcbrasse747
      @marcbrasse747 8 років тому +1

      By the way. Love your channel! I often stumble over it when looking for rare instruments.
      Concerning the VP1: Could it have been Keyboards 01/94? Alas I never heard an audio demo but at least I still have a scan of the article.
      I did however own a Korg Z1 for some time and was able to do some rather interesting things with it. I did however find the models too restrictive. That might sound strange but because most models are rather confined to one instrument family ther eis litiel room for real interaction so I found it difficult to find "the instruments inbetween", so to speak.
      I have found the ultimate tool in the totally underrated Technics WSA1. It's partly based on sampling (all drivers are ROM samples) but it is so flexible that one harldy cares. Every time I hear a new instrument, analog or digital, hardware or VST I ask myself: Can it do something that the WSA cannot do for me? The answer is almost always: NO. Even today! It's really that deep. I can thoroughly recommend it.

    Modeling technology has certainly moved on from '93, and the sounds coming out of this thing demonstrate that, but still. . .this was groundbreaking when it came out. It deserves its place in history. Also, I would kill for a synth that looks like that. I've always loved the style. Kind of like a 'Tony Stark meets Studio 54' vibe.

      @@theboogieknight8279 I don't know how you can say they aged horribly. It's a synth, and it's a real instrument. It sounds as good or as bad as you can make it. Certainly better and more dynamic than any rompler. It also has this indescribable polish and sheen to the sound, probably because of the very high end for the time 20 bit converters.

If he has to ponder for moments, when the next chord progression inspiration hasn't yet come to mind for him... All overlooked and underrated, but the truth is, Yamaha, has made some amazing synths and this sounds awesome. I guess I'll never add one of these to my collection. but would love to. Why oh why don't synth manufacturers stick to winning formulas?. Roland are the same. I'll just have to drool and feel jealous. Why should this guy have all the synths it's not fair. I am not sure. My Prophet 12 can probably do some unique sounds. If I can't do something new with 4 digital oscillators with modulatable waveshaping, and 16 modulation slots, I would be surprised. I have made sounds on it that I have never heard before - that doesn't mean no one else has though :) Also with some of the powerful software out there, I am sure new sounds can be done. • @atarkus8
      @atarkus8 2 роки тому

      Programming it, like actually programming it is almost impossible without the old mac editor. I would describe what the menu allows you to do as more like editing... you start with certain building blocks and you can mess with their parameters, like how much breath noise there is, or how big or small the resonating chamber of your virtual instrument is. Or how your string model gets plucked...
      You're stuck with settings like pressure, etc. Luckily someone had made a patch dump of what the mac editor was capable of, even when it comes to impossible instruments (like blowing into a string) so you have a lot to experiment with.
      It also has a fairly substantial effects section too which helps.

      The virtual acoustic instruments are better on the VL1. But the Prophecy has more sound colours since it also has a virtual analogue model.
