I can't get over the fact that the AWM engine is SEVEN TIMES the size of the XF. That's mind-blowing to me, and to him too lol. AND! There's the FM engine! 128 polyphony EACH. absolute madness. 2,000 sounds? and the assignability and tweakability.. it's just incredible. If it's anything like my S90XS, there will be just a simple voice category to scroll through, 1 voice at a time.. perhaps without all the automations and layers.. as would be expected in the "program" section, if that's how this is laid out.
Mr.Katsunori sure knows how to demonstrate, a phenomenal player -- but i came to think about the guys who have programmed all this into the synth, they must be really experts and very musical too, but unfortunatly never seen, a forgotten group - to bad.
You’re the best demo in the business. So much talent wow! Even though I’m more into Roland….the Montage is a superior machine and the sounds and features make it an industry standard. Well done Yamaha.
This is the Yamaha SY99 successor, everyone who wanted one can now get it. Many people wanted a new Yamaha FM Synth, so I don't know why so many are hating on it. And don't underestimate the FM Synthesis, you can basically achieve every sound with it. It's just complicated to program and very unpredictable
I would pay $3000 for that first patch alone. As always, Yamaha has the best "sounding" digital synths. They always sound the warmest and most organic. I've owned Nords, Rolands, Korgs, Alesis, Waldorf and Access and Yamaha's digitals always sounded the best to me. Even to this day the AN1x is in my dead serious opinion the best sounding VA ever made and the filters on the EX5 were jaw dropping.
I agree, and i love the yamaha synths that i own (SY77, An1x, EX5 and Montage, but i also think waldorf synths sounds just as good in the digital realm.
@@snuppssynthchannelwalforf is great but they are buggy and the quality control is not as good also i heard the management and ownership of the company are lackluster
@@CR055FIRE Depends on the era and the machine. Blofelds was quite buggy on its initial release, but got patched later, it also commonly had encoder issues. I own a Q which has no quality issues and is likely the most professional synth that I own, I know the Quantum is also quite good although the display should have been attached more sturdily to the body of the instrument itself.
Wow, so we got full blown FM back!!! Sort of SY77/SY99 revival with the hybrid of the AWM2 and this time 8-operator FM. Wonderful. EX5 was a great hybrid, too, albeit a bit underpowered in hardware processing speed, but it had the VL, AN, and AWM2 part. FM was sadly missing on the EX5. Now we have it back, and we have 8 operators. That's the move in right direction. Yamaha digital synthesizer without FM feels like there's something seriously missing. Mind you, Motif is a great machine. Okay, make mine the Motif XF7 and Montrage7. When is that Christmas coming?
Filthy McNasty I haven't gotten into such modern and expensive keyboards. The most advanced keyboards I have, are the SY99 and XV88. Nonetheless, I quite like the Motif XF7, and the Montage 7. The 5-octave ones are more portable, but don't have space to breathe on the front panel, I find them too cluttered. The 8-octave ones are very big. I find the sweet spot in the 6-octave ones, namely the XF7, and the Montage 7. If money were no object, I'd probably get both right now. But I already have 10 keyboards, and more rack modules that I care to admit, so maybe I should not expand. For one thing, it's not going to improve my keyboard playing technique, for another thing, I really like what I like, the DX7, DX7II, and the D-50 being still my favorite. I guess I like simple things. I am still stunned by how great the D-50 sound is, and how expressive the DX7 mk1 is. Maybe I am also getting to old for the millennials' designed keyboards :)
Andrew Piatek Agreed. I would prefer a Montage 7 but room dictates a Montage 6 or I'll need another effects rack. I really don't have the real estate for it.
+Filthy McNasty Well, the more I watch, I start questioning the idea of all those motion control and super knob. It's quite extreme, maybe good for EDM, but that's not the type of music I would pursue as a hobby. I am still gravitating to more basic keyboard instrument like the DX7II or the D-50. Those things you actually have to play. Sure, one doesn't have to use all those automated aspect of the Montage; nonetheless, such instrument as this (Montage) may only further ruin keyboard players' reputation in the eyes of mainstream public, as if we are not able to actually play keyboards anymore, 'cause you press one key, and it does some musical phrases already. But so is the story with plain vanilla MIDI sequencer. I am just not sure how useful for a keyboard player all this automation is. There are some performers who still play keyboards very well, and these are the ones I gravitate to. Making music in the automated way, maybe it's fun at first. But sooner or later you might need more control to interpret your music, and that is well achieved by actually playing the keyboard well. I know, I am probably contradicting myself saying this, I quite like the Montage synth engine, and I especially welcome back the FM here in its 8-operator glory. But the big screen (touchscreen?) and such busy front panel, is there a place for a keyboard still at this day and age? I don't know. I'll probably go on eBay and get some more DX7II and D-50. These could be really stunning if you use them right. I even find the original DX7 mk1 as the most expressive electronic keyboard. Really, the playability and keyboard feel is amazing.
I like the arpeggio feature--it's like having an intelligent backing band behind your playing, always playing the right harmonies under whatever melody your a making.
@@forrestperkins6237 I have the KRONOS 2 and I like KARMA. I think they both have their strong points but are similar in capability. KRONOS interface is a bit more programming friendly. Montage is more simplified.
You should be ashamed of yourself making a video this long! I had to watch every second and minute of it, okay? And will probably watch it several more times. Purchased a Montage 7 July 4 and it should be here this week. Can't wait. And yes, thank you for making the video! So informative! Have watched your other videos and they are just as great!
The sound is very good, as always with the Yamaha synths. Cleary they are trying to catch up with the Kronos adding FM and the motion knob (which does similar things as the vector control on Kronos), switching sounds without breaking it of, touchscreen, etc. Sound wise they are a serious competitor anyway. And I like the feedback that the rotary controls give and the direct control assignment. But (and mind, this is an opinion without having worked with it), I do not think that it can compete with the Kronos when it comes to the joy of sounddesign (probably why some comments say that is more a performance keyboard). Adding the FM is a good step (wondering if the operators can also use pcm samples like Blue from Rob Papen). But is seems that the Kronos still goes way beyond what Yamaha is offering with not only a FM engine (that will load DX sysex files), but also wave sequencing, three types of analogue modeling synths (AL1, Polysix, MS20) and physical modeling of stings. Programming sounds on the Kronos is so much fun! The Kronos has also dedicated engines for acoustic piano, electric piano and organ, but I suppose AWM2 from Yamaha takes care of that. Anyway, I think it would be nice if they added also a VA (new AN1x?) and especially physical modeling like the VL synths, PLEASE WITH BREATH CONTROL!
so I just tested the montage it's legit..I First got on the kronos to warm-up then after playing it I got on motif and realized once you touch montage you can't go back..I say you will need a lot of time to program sounds to taste but it is so much potential..I played the 88 key I can't play weight keys but the keys had a bounce in which made me forget weight. the sound quality is so high when I got on the motif I felt as if I was playing a Casio..I had negative feed for this after playing I felt ashamed..glad I didn't buy the kronos or motif . this will go great with my nord electro...for live musicians this is it .. I'll tell you it's ok to buy without playing it has more potential then the user..lol ..

Looks and sounds like Yamaha's response to the Korg Oasys and Kronos with the exception of the super knob but that can be programmed into other knobs and sliders. Yamaha's palette of sounds is still unique and varies from the competition. They had to come up with something to look advanced from the Motif series.

+rydeentokio Easy for you to say!
Reminds me a bit of a Synclavier with it's FM and sample sound combination. I wish it had a multi track sequencer but overall I actually like it.
It has one. Only a very basic 16 tracks with only quantize, overdub, replace and punch in/out functions, no edition.
And now with O.S 3.0, it got a proper sequenser.
I think two best new keyboard products are this one and dsi ob6.

Ujiie-san, o-demo, arigatou gozaimasu. MOTIF to kuraberuto to? Latin no arpeggio arimasuka? (Montuno, 6/8 AfroCuban, toka ...) Kikasasete kudasai.
+Piotr Zalewski Hi Piotr, no I'm just inquiring about some of M8's features. I like the pure sounds, but I'm not too impressed about the "super-knob"/motion control. I'm more interested in the tools for recording music: arpeggios, sequencer, etc.

For some reason the mofx (and motiff) performance patches semed more inspiring to me.
+emilshere I didn't get that impression.
This synth contains those sounds as well and many patches that are far better then what was avilable in the motif and moxf.
最近のシンセばっかになってちょっと残念です。

Can you do 720 triple no-scopes with it?
Piotr Zalewski Wicked!!
Nice demo and playing, keep it up:)
I wish the seaboard could control that fm engine intimately.
Wonderful ...! ...as Schopenhauer said , music is the unique transcendental meditation and this synth is his means ...
