DEHH did this review right. They talked about Tyler's sexuality not to feed into the controversy but to contextualize the project and really dissect it. Great job guys. Some other reviewers should take notes...
Exactly. It's totally cool to discuss his sexuality in a review because Tyler makes it the focal point of the album, but a review should still be about the actual music at it's core.
Lil Wayne always snaps on tracks with tyler. He did his thing on Cherry Bomb too. I don't think he's going to make a comeback lyrically though. tyler has stated that he had to specifically ask for Wayne to give him that 07 version of himself for him to give a dope rhyme
Myke, when he said "All smiles over here shout out to the Garden" he's talking about the band The Garden. They have a song called "All Smiles Over Here :)" and they are friends.
99% sure Can were not actually legit featured on the album, but that Tyler used their track 'Spoon' in his and therefore they received writing and feature credit. Listen to the Sonic Youth remix of 'Spoon' and that's what he sampled.
The line isnt "all smiles over here, shoutout to the garden shed", its "shoutout to the Garden" which is a band Tyler likes with a song called All Smiles Over Here
You guys got the lyrics in "I Ain't Got Time" wrong, it's "All smiles over here, shout out to The Garden." The Garden has a song called "All Smiles Over Here," Tyler likes them, they performed recently at Flog Gnaw.
Kanye also sampled can's sing swan song on drunk n hot girls. And damo suzuki the lead singer of can is quite active, he likes to jam with new bands and artists he meets, and he cooks them a home cooked meal before and after their performance.
Him saying the frank line was misread doesnt mean he didnt come out on garden shed, there are alot more lines that are stronger than that. He aint clowning us, but for some reason people still want to think he is. I think he just didnt want people to think he was referencing frank.
+mark dunn he didn't really disprove anything. He clarified one lyric to let us know he wasn't talking about Frank; the context of the entire song remains the same.
Marc Dunn He didn't say he wasn't gay on twitter. All he said was that the word "frank" was actually "phrase." That doesn't change anything about the song. It's still about him thinking his his sexuality was a phase, then realizing it's not. Changing that word changed nothing and he never said he was straight.
I think some of the "coming out" lines was him just being his old immature self but the more serious lines talking about depression and loneliness were reflective of his modern mature introspective self. This internal battle Tyler is going through I think is one of the main focal points of the album.
Mike, Can was big as hell on /mu/ in like 2009-12. Tyler posted there almost for sure. I was part of the community back then and it was all but confirmed. Look up /mu/core and a lot of those charts is probably the shit he listens to.
Mykes sincerity in the explanation of album really touched me. The overall sadness and gloomy nature of the album really came through and Myke really hit the nail on this one. Shout out DEHH
I listened to the leak and played the album like 7-10 times so when it came out I felt bad bc that's streams he's missing out on so I'm probably gonna end up buying a physical copy by the end of the week and only listening to it on streaming sites lol
One thing I caught that I haven't seen anyone mention is the drums in the chorus of Where This Flower Blooms are the same as the chorus in Tamale. I see that as true maturity, using the same beat in 2 completely different songs and styles.
According to Genius, the Can feature on the track "Foreword" is a sample. "Tyler sampled “Spoon (Sonic Youth Remix)”, a remix by American noise/alt-rock band Sonic Youth of the song “Spoon” by German krautrock band Can."
The line Myke mentions about all smiles over here shoutout to The Garden is actually a shoutout to a band called The Garden; they have a song called all smiles over here. Tyler has been seen at a few of their concerts before, and has mentioned them on Twitter a few times
Tyler really flexed his musical talent on this album everything is so layered so well put together from the features to Tyler’s own rapping I love this album easily Tyler’s best work next to wolf imo
So dope. He talked about the album and said that people felt it was more mature because he took it more seriously. He said he thought about ever single line and every line really meant something. I was never a Tyler fan at all, but I think this is gonna be in the AOTY talks.
Wolf was important to me when I finished high school, listened to that album everyday. This album reminds me of those times. I love it. Had to buy the scumfuck album version.
hell yea. i fucking love this album. it felt like cherry bomb on steroids. the soulful, emotional elements that cherry bomb had are present on this album, and the production on this album was perfected whereas the production on cherry bomb felt very sloppy & th mixing was pretty bad. however, i still love cherry bomb. im glad tyler has finally perfected this sound. he experienced with this sound on cherry bomb, and i take that as his introduction to the sound. he took the criticism cherry bomb got and worked on fixing the problems to make for something better, and this is the finished product. this is an absolutely amazing album. thanks t
cherry bomb was made how it was on purpose, it wasn't him "perfecting" that sound that was in cherry bomb or finally "fixing the problems" in flower boy. Tyler always had a unorthodox way of doing things when it came to his music. just because cherry bomb was the way it was doesn't mean it was sloppy or badly put together, it just means you weren't into the particular sound he was going for. also, cherry bomb wasn't his introduction to that sound, there was a song or two on wolf that sounded similar plus there's a instrumental on cherry bomb that was either out around the time wolf came out or a little after wolf came out.
Can didn't collab. Tyler used a sample of Sonic Youth's remix of Spoon off a remix compilation Can released in the late 1990s, which is even more fucking wild in my opinion. How fucking obscure can you get lol.
At 4:15 when y'all are talking about I Ain't Got Time, the quote is "All smiles over here, shoutout to The Garden" which is a reference to the song "All Smiles Over Here :)" by the group The Garden
Beezy had this on the Top 10. Kinda makes me mad because he would have got hyped and evrryone loves it when he gets hyped for a dope album. Also he liked Rocky on here thats sensational
Myke, the line "All smiles over here, shoutout to the Garden shed" is a reference to a band named The Garden that has a song called All Smiles. "All smiles over here" is the hook to the song.
You guys have to look at the credits before you do the reviews in future. Please. You need to know Tyler produces every track he's ever done when reviewing him, it's a very important parr of what he does.
Only tyler can put "scum fuck as the title of something & make it sound super dope as fuck.💖🌸🙌🔥. I loved this whole project tyler is one of my artist/visionaries. All his albums are uniquely different. Im Feeling like this project will be timeless in its essence meaning years from now this shit will still bang & you can pass this album down to your future kids.
The album was leaked many days before the album just so ya'll know in the comment section same with Vic mensa who's album is supposed to release next Friday leaked Thursday... allgedly
Vic's album ain't leak, it was just featured on NPRs First Listen which lets you stream it early, basically the same thing tho. I wonder why artists decide to give out their album for free a week early, doesn't seem beneficial but idk.
Jet oh well thanks for that knowledge didn't know that all I seen was that it had a few zip files throughout the Web so I had thought it leaked... I also agree on it not seeming that beneficial to the artists.
Dude I'm trying to find the Can on Foreward because they're my favorite band, and I think it's a sample. A lot of times vocal samples credit original writers on the track, so that's my guess. Might be Damo Suzuki singing in the background around 1:10/1:11, but I'd be really surprised if it was actually a collab. I hope this kind of thing is a trend honestly. The last Tribe album sampled them too.
Yes yes @Myke C-town dont forget yeezy was sampling CAN on way back on Graduation....and tylers on this millenial internet mining stuff for real. common g
weissbrot nah g, anthony actually takes his time and digest' the music he reviews. he also buys it and supports each artist instead of listening to the leaks..
The line is "all smiles over here shout out to 'the garden'". The garden is a band from Orange County and "All smiles over here" is the name of one of there songs
If Myke found it that wildly unbelievable that Tyler would know about and like Can just because they were an underground band that is 50 years old and Tyler is in his 20s, then he severely underestimates this generation of music listeners. I mean, Myke knows about Can apparently, and he didn't grow up in the 60s or anything. If he knows about them, then why is it so unbelievable that an audiophile, who has grown up with access to the Internet and therefore with the ability to find and listen to any band ever, could like and know about Can...? I just find that really weird.
I think he was more surprised that Tyler got Can on his album and that Can agreed to it, but I think they were credited for a sample, which Myke may have missed.
Mmm, he does say that, and that's def part of his surprise, but at 13:16 he says "The fact that Tyler is his age and knows who the fuck Can is, first of all, is impressive."
I didn't get the sadness they're speaking of on this album. I got the feeling that he's missing someone, but not in a depressed way. Like when your best friend moves as a kid and u gotta find some new friends

Can was sampled on the first track, you can see it in the "Every Sample in flower Boy" video or whatever the actual title is
The official name of the album is simply "Flower Boy." "Scum Fuck Flower Boy" is the unofficial title, according to Tyler.
The line is "all smiles over here shout out to 'the garden'". The garden is a band from Orange County and "All smiles over here" is the name of one of there songs
That was quick
The "Can" feature is the metronome sounding beat on foreward. look up 'Can - Spoon (Sonic Youth Remix)'
Andy Spendlove exactly, there's loads of 16 year olds on the internet listening to Can. Also they have been sampled a bunch.
Can was sampled for Drunk and Hot Girls (Sing Swan Song)
Damn, am I actually first for once? If so.... FIRST!! But in more seriousness, DEHH got to this one quick! Good shit
CAN are NOT featured on this album. Tyler sampled a Sonic Youth and System 7 remix of Spoon.
If elzhi aint on it beezy don't like it
On "Can" - Tyler just used the beat from their track "Spoon" slowed-down.
Album of the year
4:23 "all smiles over here" is a song by The Garden so he's giving a literal shout out to that band, it's not about the garden shed
