I got invited to Japan! The Japanese TV show called "Who Wants to go to Japan" finds people who have an interest in some part of Japanese culture and invites them to Japan to experience that culture in person for the first time. In last week's Japan series video, I explained how I got on the show, and this week it's finally time... to head to JAPAN!! Follow along as I travel halfway around the globe to visit the Koriyama Goldfish Museum in Yamatokoriyama near Osaka (the second largest prefecture in Japan).
The museum has TONS of great goldfish artifacts including the oldest goldfish book in existence, the pickled remains of goldfish that were owned by the Emperor of Japan 70 years ago, a newspaper clipping from the first time goldfish were exported from Japan to the US, and more! There's also a goldfish market at the Koriyama Goldfish Museum where breeders from the surrounding areas bring their goldfish to be sold to the public, so you'll get to see tons of goldfish varieties from ranchu to bubble eyes and everything in-between.
This video is the second in a series about my Japan goldfish trip. Tune in next Friday to see my very unexpected visit to an unconventional petting zoo inside a shopping mall in Japan where they had kangaroos, iguanas, an alpaca, and even cats and dogs?!

Solid Gold Aquatics your fish probably had berwuloses
Orlando international airport is so confusing i swear Tampa international is better
edgy lol
Solid Gold Aquatics thanks for sharing your experience, but I am deeply upset at how some people can treat another life. love you jenny, but I'm mad at Japan fishfarms.
As soon as you said "ooh, look at that tri-color!" I was like, I NEED A TRI COLOR RANCHU IN MY LIFE AT THIS VERY MOMENT AAAAHHHH
Maddy Fairytail Same...
*heavy breathing*
But since I have asthma right now, I actually have a literal heavy breathing when I see that tri-color ranchu :(
Maddy Fairytail same
Maddy Fairytail thay one was so pretty!
Same here. It was gorgeous
Oh my goodness. You must have wanted to grab a hose and start doing water changes:/
SamanthaR actually goldfish do really well in algy (idk how it's spelled) water :) mine ate it and grew hella big in a few months, I never changed the water as rainwater overflowed it :)
Trines Nails yeah, that's not healthy
SamanthaR but I know what you mean, just watched the full video :(
+Trines Nails I have no problem with algae at all. In fact I'm pro green algae especially for young fish:) My comment referred to the sick fish obviously being kept in poor conditions.
Trines Nails are you mean or what
I really respect that you gave us an accurate picture of the goldfish market, including all the sick/dying fish. It's not fun to watch but I feel that it's important for us to know about. If only everyone took fishkeeping as seriously as you do, there wouldn't be problems like that.
Okay, look, for all of you who are commenting that "what do you expect from a large goldfish facility?" or "you're being too judgmental" or straight-out rude comments of Jennie being hypocritical due to her fish room crash, stop.
I worked and lived near a Korean koi and goldfish marketplace in my childhood, and they had the best care available. They had a small disaster of ich through the ponds, and I remember my family and the owners working tirelessly to save those fish from death. Most of them did succumb to the illness; however, we managed to save about half of them with medications and just plain careful observations. And why did we spend thousands of dollars on fish? Because we were determined to sell goldfish in the highest quality. Most marketplaces have a main goal to sell in the highest quality. And guess what? The other goldfish sellers around us, they did the same as we did when they had disasters. And why? Because we also cared about goldfish as well. These are living, breathing creatures and whether we are selling them or not in a large facility, we care for creatures.
Not am I only shocked about the conditions that these goldfish are living in, I am even more shocked by the comments written here. As a fellow fish keeper and goldfish marketplace worker, I can truly conclude that Jennie is a great goldfish keeper. Why? She has the compassion, the knowledge and the experience. It is amazing how far she went to medicate her own fish, not giving up even when there was no hope because she cared. And caring is what defines most breeders and keepers. She is far different from the marketplace workers here, because she tried to save them. That is what sets the two apart.
I’m not disagreeing but I imagine a korean goldfish and koi marketplace has more modern values than one of japan that has had traditions for hundreds of years of methods of goldfish culling/keeping. This is coming from a korean btw not some rando bullshit history teacher
They probably just need to hire another employee or two. We're understaffed where I work. I bet they're understaffed where you work and if I had to take a guess it's probably true where most people work. Business owners miss the forest for the trees sometimes. Unfortunately in this situation living things are involved. Pop into your local Petco and have a look at their betta fish. I'm guessing you'll find all sorts of issues with them and I'm told that they don't usually stay there for more than two weeks. Understaffing is also part of the unemployment problem but that's a different rant.
It's really odd to me that they wouldn't take better care of the fish. High quality goldfish are expensive and it makes more sense to keep them healthy so that they can sell them. Still an amazing experience of course but I imagine it was hard to see all the poorly cared for fish.
Is really hard to maintain all goldfish alive especially if you have millions
@@DistopiaKosaki agreed. It is like when you clone too many plants, some will guaranteed die of neglect.
ITS CALLED BUSINESS
Pickled goldfish at 12:00
Cian thanks
thank you Cian XD
Thankkk god
Don't SPOIL US
Thx
Hey Jennie, sorry that you had to see all of that. I hope that the rest of the trip was fabulous!!
Even when some things get you down, or it gets a bit stressed, I love that you still see the positive side to it all. Not many people i know these days do that and i always try to live day to day seeing the good side of things; it just makes me happy that you still got to have a bit of fun even thought it wasn't all that was expected
I've had a 55 gallon sitting around for almost a year now. And I haven't been sure what I'd want to put in it. And you've made me decide I want to have it as a goldfish tank. really love Ranchus they're so adorable.
55 gallons are pretty good for some goldfish
Get them girl :D
Good luck 😉
A 55gal is perfect for two fancies or one common. :)
really want some nice quality ranchu. nothing like too high quality. it's just a matter of living somewhere that enables me to set it up and have all the proper filtration and what not. that and funds lol
Put in cardinal tetras or mollies
Jenny, I love your heart! I wish more people in the hobby loved and cared for fish like you!
You could hear the excitement when talking about your youtube channel, that pitch made me smile
Hey Jen, I hope that aside from the major disappointment that you experienced at the fish farm that you were able to enjoy yourself visiting Japan. Being new to the goldfish hobby, it hurts my heart to see so many sick and dying fish. Thank you for being one of realest youtubers out there and sharing your experiences with us, both good and bad.
Thanks for filming those little chubbs in the fish tank, that cheered me up after seeing all those sick fish
Me too
Your passion and compassion is something to be so proud of. Sadly a rarity on our planet. You will go beyond your wildest dreams. Izzy in your ear and dreams in your heart. Matt~ from the deserts of Arizona
Seeing those beautiful fish suffering and dying hurt my heart. Every life, no matter how small, is important. They still have feelings and should be treated properly so they have a happy, healthy life :/
Jess Smith
that is if their life is in your hands
Faris Ahmad
Could you expound on that?
They don't have feelings lol
Can you count how many ants and roaches that you crushed?
Fish don't feel pain
How exciting. That is awesome. What a great opportunity & experience. The sick goldfish were sad but you did a great job on documenting your journey.

by the title i thought she bought the pickled goldfish as food
I love you so much! Because your videos are educational and helpful for many people! Keep up that great amazing works you do on UA-cam!! 💖
15:00 I'm glad she was honest about this part. The rest of us could tell and we're waiting for you to speak up on it.
Ranchu is my favorite. Thank you for sharing this video with us and congratulations on breaking 100k followers :)
to the people who are like 'it's a large scale facility what do you expect?' Yes. Every large scale operation is gonna have sick animals but it's about the care they have for the fish. These fish aren't being treated or removed from healthy fish and there are far more unhealthy fish than healthy fish.
^ This
You are so brave! Great job! Your empathic spirit shines!!! You’re a bright star!!!
I am so happy yet sad for you at the same time. How exciting for you to be able to go there. but how utterly heartbreaking to see the condition of some of them, well, a lot of them. And not being able to do anything to help.😢 I know there are more videos to come and I truly hope that they took you to some of the better places that are in the more Southern mointain parts of the island. There were some of the most beautiful beautiful beautiful locations in the Kyoto prefecture. there's a Temple where monks tend to the most gorgeous goldfish I have ever seen. One thing I did notice is they tend to be a lot more attentive to the koi in that country than the goldfish. This is just my personal experience but it was something I took notice of. I'm still very happy that you were able to go on this trip.
BebeLapinouBlanc
wow big comment and such a nice word to say😃👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
郡山まで遠路お疲れさまです。
日本人なのにこのような素敵な施設があるのを初めて知りました。ありがとう☺
また日本に来てくださいね🙋
I NEED A SYPHON, BUCKET, HOSE AND SOME WATER CONDITIONER STAT!! WE NEED TO DO SOME WATER CHANGES
It is great we are getting to see Japan through your honest perspective!
The parasite/disease you got in your fish room was a freak thing. A rather tricky one to treat too.
What is going on at the place featured in this video IS laziness. Look.. I get it... thousands of fish.. and the prospect of making fish stronger by seeing which ones can withstand poor conditions. But there is downright laziness being displayed at this place. Some of these illnesses take awhile to get so bad... which tells us that water conditions are really never very good there.
Aqua Star I agree, its seriously such a shame for these beautiful fish. Makes me so sad.
I've never really dabbled in the world of fish but her videos are so well edited and explained that I'm absolutely hooked, pun intended, after only watching for a week when Jenna marbles recommend her Chanel
All those sick fish made me so sad. :(
Slaysmr Same here. Very sad to see such a huge number of ill, dying, and dead fish all in one place.
Slaysmr I think this place is full of parasites, and knowing kinguio reproduction being so easy, these Japaneses dont care, and Japaneses do prefer tropical tiny fishies from Brazil.
Lot o carps in Japan die in rivers and lakes, because overpopulation, green algae , lack of food as well! I saw that.
Val yamana What a bummer. I wish they had more respect for the fish they raise.
Kenith Macion Just because they can produce nice fish doesn't mean there can't be sick fish too.
Slaysmr mad me hungry
I like goldfish for the longest time but you really got me to love them! Especially telescope eye butterfly tail ones.
Awesome, But the sick fish just made me sad.

I feel special for watching this.... Thanks Jennie! 💕

-well, almost right, it's a matter of time.
This is so good that u care for them a person who love animals has a very pure heart love u friend 😘
Wow! What an eye opener!!! Thanks for taking us on this journey. I honestly didn't expect to see so many ill fish at a Japanese goldfish farm. In my mind they are just so perfect and I always wondered how they kept such "perfect" fish healthy. Guess they are not so different than us.
It was an eye opener! But it also depends on the place I think. This place was actually a goldfish market where local breeders brought their fish to be sold. I only found out halfway through my visit here that this place doesn't actually produce any goldfish - they just sell. I did get to see a truly great goldfish farm later on in my Japan trip that will be coming in a future video soon!
Solid Gold Aquatics Oops! My bad. Still, I guess I expected more care.
I'm looking forward to seeing more. This is so interesting!!!
Jennie, Sorry I'm a little behind on current events with youtube but I just watched this video and the latest one of your japan visit series. I am a Filipino American born in Sasebo, Japan but grew up in Colorado since 1992. I'm so jellie you had the opportunity to visit Japan! Seeing all those dead fish breaks my heart and is more of a reason why I should support Japanese imported goldfish! I also read a useful comment of a Japanese born goldfish lover explaining how the farms work and why sooo many fish die from this type of environment in a large scale. I can understand why they do what they do but at least have the courtesy to clean up the dead fish before film crews came in to film everything.
comeon guys King of DIY asked for 85K $ he got it in 2 days....she is asking for help only 25K and we are 15K Short.... its been a while lets support her guys...really...
yes yes yes yes
Ali Als she does deserve it- but he also has almost 4 times the subscribers.
i also agree
that has nothing to do with it
but he was not donating to his own fundraiser
Thank you for sharing this overseas experience, the good and the downs
Your reaction to the awful condition at the goldfish farm made me respect what you do even more
Cudos

Really great videos. Glad I found your Channel. Appreciate all the extra info that you provide. Tks!
Love how everyone is saying 'Hi im first!'. I'm over here like, No Solid Gold Aquatics is first lol
100%
Thailee J. Nice zen profile pic 👌🏻
watching your channel makes me happy
Did you ask them about the mortality rates?
Disease issues they have and how they deal with them?
Ben interesting to hear their side of the story.
I use to work at a salmon hatchery. It was normal to pick 10-30 dead fry out from a pond of 5000 fish a day. Much more then that we would have tested them for whatever illness they had and treated them.
But the mortality was primarily just the weakest ones dying off from natural selection.
Just a bit of my history. To say I can see both sides.
I agree the fish in the tanks were pretty sad looking.
If you did ask about the disease and mortality info let us know.
Thanks
Great videos.
Waylon Jeffrey's to us I don't think Jenny would ask these questions during her tour because of these scenarios I think because:
Since she's a tourist from a foreign country, they can't explain deeper details.
She's speaking English and more likely the workers don't understand her language.
The farmers were on their butts trying their best to acclimate the pond that was there for generations, and then took a break from watching the goldfish 金魚.
Omg this gave me so much nostalgia I need to go back to Japan literally the most amazing country
it's like a Wal-Mart breeder 🤔
Jessica Rose Walmart doesn't get this good quality fish.
Qiaj Anderson I don't consider sick fish quality.
I think they're meaning to say that even though some of these fish are lethargic and in poor shape, at least they're better than my local Walmart.
Sick fish are sick fish.. Don't matter what kind or how "good" they were.
1
So awesome! Thanks for sharing this experience!
you should do a live stream of a fish tank. you could call it fish cam🐟
I've been in Japan for like 6 to 10 years of my life and I really love the Japanese gold fish
Lol I like Micky,he seems like he has fun.
Soooo coooolll!!!! Even the preserved goldfish!!! I wonder how they did it back then so many decades ago.
This video should make the owners that are buying goldfish to take care of the fish better.. they are bred at these conditions and the ones you buy are the survivors of this .. this is goldfish farming .. dont take any fish for granted they are still living creatures..
I love all your Japanese art you got! Thank you for the honesty of the business, not many brave enough to say it. Also that you kept it classy and didn’t say anything was awesome.
Fish lays 300 eggs
only 5 of them hatch
Human reaction: only 5! they might be endangered in the long run
Nature: Dang it! only 2 of them should have hatched! great it's gonna be an overflow in the long run
i love the way you present. i love gold fish. love your videos.
I think dandy oranda has the best fancy goldfish in the world. I love watching that vdo where Jennie when visit Dandy oranda. fish there have best life.
kinostarss ss the thing is that he doesn’t breed goldfish, he has a facility that sells fish. When u own a farm that actually breeds goldfish, then you’ll have more fish to take care of and other things to worry about.
I went to Narita as a layover for a day and we toured the temples and everything it was so beautiful
awesome vid mate! really eye opening! i only knew japan was big on koi but not goldfish too
MyAquaticDiary ggggg
Goldfish are related to carp like the koi just proves how evaluation can have such a big change for animals in the same family
its not awesome its heart breaking! and goldfish are closely related to koi in many cases you can find them crossed together like my 3 goldfish.
sebastian juscak uhh
I feel like I could even fall asleep in that tiny bathroom in the hotel room, it looks so comfy for to me for some reason
Wow I want that tricolour at 10:15 so bad :o
I love that tricolor Ranchu! It almost looks like a Sanke koi:)
Thank you so much for making this series! And looking at all those poor goldfish made me thankful that my little black moor is safe and healthy in his home. Anyway, I'm looking forwards to the next video :D
Well....that was depressing...... such horrible conditions those poor fish were in. 😔😔😔
i LOVE those buildings. always have had a fascination with japanese buildings :)
take care Jennie
They were beautiful.
I hope you voiced your concern for the poor care of the fish in the one location and I hope you let them know you can tell the fish were ill and the water quality being poor. I am surprised they would take you to a place that had so many sick fish. I understand it is a famous Goldfish museum, but since it is shouldn't the fish look and be better then any other place? To me it sounds and looks like they either don't really know how to care for the goldfish, realize they are sick, or they just don't care.
Jeff Frank they probably have 1000s of fish, there's probably no way to win this situation
I love you and all of your fish and your videos
To be honest, All of people dont know how to properly take care of Goldfish . Even in some Pet stores , Goldfish are already sick . The reason behind this is that goldfish are there for commercial purposes . They dont necessary live in the best conditions. We have to remember that they just want money. They cant really take care of each fish. Thats the reality.I know it sucks to see them in that condition as a goldfish keeper. We do the best to keep our goldfish to live in the right condition .
they can take more care.. they really can.... Some adjustments would already mean a lot.
I couldn't help but smile when the man said "sugoi da" when you said your subscriber count.
Maybe that other big pond with dead fish in it is a big pond were they put dead fish in 😥😩
I loved this video, I'm also obsessed with goldfish & plz make your videos longer lol
Idk why but I felt so angry when I saw they were not getting enough attention
Just looking at it makes me sick
So exciting and so sad at the same time! I bet it was overwhelming
Gold fish are such a over looked thing that most people don't realize have a deep history. A lot of things are like that too, not just goldfish. Everything has a story to tell, you just have to acknowledge it and take the time to really research into it.
I love this one video
Right now I'm going out with the blooms look at this guy and see what happens with that guy
I think the problems with the unhealthy fishes are due culture, funding and partially lack of exposure. Most of these kinds of places in Japan are run by family and friends. They don't generate a lot of revenue that could be spent on the labour and equipment needed to keep that much fish in tip top conditions. I agree though that they shouldn't be keeping that many fish if it's beyond their capability to care for them. But that judgement comes from a different culture and background. As hobbyists in the west, we often see these creatures as pets and less so as livestock.
I'm going to get back into Fancy Goldfish because of you.
I thought I was out... EXCELLENT!
thats the difference between a hobbyist and a business as hobbyist we dont put a price on our pets. businesses put a dollar value on animals and use the most cost effective ways to produce and provide those animal. from a hobbyist point of view alot of what they do seems unethical but from a business point of view they are not pets or animals they are a goods that are bought and sold.
Your eyes were super green on the first morning. Such a different way of life over there
That's just really sad
It did put a damper on the experience for sure. I don't want to sound ungrateful though... it was still an amazing experience overall.
Oh yeah. I didn't mean to sound harsh or anything. Just feel bad for the fishies. I'm glad you had an amazing time! You definitely deserve it
That is really sad to see them sick and dying. I’m glad you gave your honest opinion. You’re very passionate about fish. New to the channel and just subscribed. I love your videos!
Its like Walmart all over again
Such an interesting trip!!! Sad to see so many beautiful fish in such poor conditions though.
The animal cruelty on this video was insane. Poor babies, no animals deserve to be floating lifeless at the top of the tank.. also as an alpaca owner and lover I just want to say that at the end of your video you say "an alpaca" alpacas should never be kept alone as it gives them severe depression. Sorry to be such a downer, I love your videos, please keep doing everything you do for your fisheys
I've been to Japan a few time. It's so lovely and hectic. As much as I love Tokyo and the big cities, I enjoy the smaller towns and hiking in nature :)
Thanks for filming!
I'm sorry to see all those sick fish
I love how eye opening your video is. love the honesty
"what do you say?!"
I just subscribed to see pretty goldfish. I didn't realize the fish world was also riddled with drama😂
I would bring that to the attention of the owner.
poor little fishies😔🐡 everytime i watch your videos it makes me want to visit my local pet shop and see if they have any pretty fish in stock!
Why would they pickle an oranda? Rip mr oranda
It was done after the fish died to preserve them as historical artifacts.
Sounds fun
it was done, so that you can ask a question....
It's so nice to hear your voice again. I'm a little bummed out that you do everything on your own. Probably with traveling as well. If I were closer I would hang with you and talk about goldfish all day. Even if, I know nothing of it. =)
HI JENNIE!!
thanks so much for video your trip. I might never get to japan due to finances so really appreciate it. your the bomb!
Damnn I'll probably never own a tosakin so it really sucks to see them suffering like that 🤦🏻♂️
This is so cool! Also, for the beginning bit,I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! I'm going on a 30+hour drive tomorrow.i know Im watching this in 2018... don't judge me
I feel so bad about you seeing all those neglected and dying fish. Your face was just full of pain and sorrow. 😔😔😔Sorry 💔
As someone who lives in Orlando the first part of the video was very trippy
I was wondering why you weren't more excited, then you showed the sick fish, sorry Jennie.
that's a really incredible place! i especially liked the museum tour. there were many fish in great health but it is too bad that the care could be better for some of those fish. still, it was brave of you to show the tanks with the sick fish. you could have just as easily cut that part out. hopefully they will tighten up their operation a bit so that isn't so much of an issue.
They should hire you to fix that place. pretty depressing...
