Making $45K/Yr By Farming Fish in My Apartment | Side Hustles

- He’s a professional extra in movies and TV. You may have caught him as an alien Starfleet officer. When he’s home, he breeds exotic fish with a farm of 50 tanks in his 1-bedroom apartment.
In this edition of SIDE HUSTLES, we meet @AquaMalik, a fish farmer and influencer who lives with 3000 to 5000 fish (depending on the month) and started breeding when he was seven in Sri Lanka. Malik lets us into his home where he broadcasts his conservationist passion, to the anger of some breeders who feel he’s giving away fish trade secrets. Malik gets back to selling outside his apartment after lockdown, attempts to save virtually extinct species, and shares all that he’s given up and gained from his fish.

As a fellow fish addict, I can tell you this; don’t get it twisted, this dude works his ass off maintaining those tanks, breeding and raising those fish. This isn’t a side hustle, it’s full time hustle.

I love how practical he is. Yes, he cares about the fish and their well being, but he's also very clear about how to make money and how much. Not starving for his passion, and that's a good message.

Me & my wife started keeping fish last year. We now have 8 tanks, 1 brackish. We have 4 different species of puffer fish. This dude works his ass off. I was so proud after a year of fish keeping my pea puffers, guppies, & cory catfish all decided to reproduce in the same week. I know how hard it is to keep my fish alive & healthy. And it's what he cares about! When he said his girlfriend broke up with him because she saw his tanks made me really sad. He's a hard worker, it makes him happy and he's not hurting anyone. I'm all for it!

I’m in the aquarium hobby and have ptsd as well. It is the most therapeutic hobby I’ve encountered. Each species of fish has its own traits and each individual fish is filled with personality that’s unique to each fish. It’s amazing.
While I don't have PTSD, I have a severe depression. It's really hard sometimes to keep up with the tanks, especially since mine are high maintenance - heavily planted, a lot of light, specifically fertilized, etc. But it can just as well feel meditative and rewarding the next day. In any case, sitting in front of a tank, seeing beautiful, healthy fish display crazily bright colors and showcase their natural behavior is better than any movie. The tank never looks the same way twice. There are so many details due to the all-natural setup and the plants, which is why I much prefer it to breeding tanks or what you normally find in an American home. Here, the fish interact with their surroundings, glide through the leaves and stems, hide in the shadows, occupy and defend caves or tiny territories. It's therapeutic.
@@Nitidus absolutely
Same feeling. I'm an IT professional and work can be exhausting most of the time. I started taking care of fish because my 5-year-old son would buy them and leave them inside random plastic containers. Started with one 6-gallon tank but now I have 12 tanks and hundreds of fish. The hobby gives me peace. I use the Walstad method with low-tech plants and reparium plants like photos. This method is so easy I only do water top-ups, twice a year water change only.

Bruh the Fish have more personality then her anyway.
They just had a reasonable disagreement, doesn’t mean she’s a bad person.
A roomate back in the day had a real big tank. He had various fish that all had personalities. Some little groups would battle each other for this house in there, other single fish would battle for who owned the sucken boat. Some days the tank was calm and some days the battles were on. We would all sit around, smoke weed and watch the giant fish tank to see what dynamics were happening in the fish world. I had never paid attention to fish in tanks other than a quick look. It was amazing to sit and watch them all co-exist and see fish politics in action. Very relaxing and entertaining. Excellent therapy no doubt.

As someone who was in the aquarium trade for decades, I find it a little hard to believe that this man is making the $ he claims. Those are all very common “bread and butter” species. The huge $ is with high end exotics (red arowanas, hard to get African lake cichlids) and marine fish and corals. Not guppies, glow-fish and commonly available bettas. The flower horns in the first store are worth more than his whole fish room. I’m calling bullshit on this, and since it’s from vice, I’m not at all surprised.

As a fellow Canadian-Sri Lankan, I'm happy that your parents let you do the stuff that you want. In many Sri Lankan families, they're forced to do careers which aren't fun, but they give a lot of money.
Fish keeping, even as a hobby, is like a second job if you have more than a couple of tanks. Between feeding, cleaning & water changes you can spend 2 hours a week on each tank, more if you are breeding, even more if you have sick fish and a hospital tank. We are going to have to get another electrical circuit installed to support all our aquariums and ponds at this stage.
I love it. Always have a minimum of two if not more haha.
This dude genuinely enjoys this. When your hobby pays for you, what else one need. Hope I would find mine
You can find these nuts
@@awno6627 aw no dude
Im from Sri lanka and recently moved to Vancouver. good luck with everything brother, I love how you treat fish with planted tanks
"keeps me away from drugs"
*Sparks up a huge joint* 🤣
Keep it up dude, stay blessed 🙏🏼
Blessed be aqua Malik. I’ve been watching your videos for awhile and I mostly just love your passion and sensibility in fish keeping. It makes me so happy to know that you are able to make a little money while doing what you love. I have like 15 tanks in my apartment that I hope to see a return on, at least a little! But I literally got evicted over my tanks and lost almost all my fish and shrimp. I cried so many tears. But at least now I have a good excuse to try a bunch of new things! Be well!
“Hopefully that happens, but if not, I’m good.” Free wisdom right there.
Rare fish sigma way of money making
Loving the instrumental in the back.
Honestly I know exactly how dude feels when he said “ My apartment is like a spaceship “
I go to my garage to smoke and stare at my fishes for hours, feeding watching them eating. It peaceful and relaxing listening to the waterfall sound from the water filter. Imagine listening to 60 tank in 1 room, super soothing.
I do the same thing smoke a bowl and stare at my guppies that I breed and my betas
Lmao small world
Same here pal
@@rachaeldangelo1337 Just don't bring your fish to actual space.. they'd float around in the air and die. 😭
Many people just don't know what a good feeling it is. I also spend great amount of time looking at my animals.
He has great business practices and cares about his fish like his family. What a heartwarming guy.
Watching your videos makes me want to start my own side business. You're so cool. I love your calming videos. They're wonderful!

Exactly 💯! I won't compromise my dream and passions for a woman. And if I'm single for life, so be it. Don't care one bit.

Turn YOUR passion into HER passion
bruh who are you to give advice? a guy attacked you and your woman at a grocery store once and all you could do is curl up in fetal position... pathetic excuse of a man!
Ehh. Depends how hot she is
Who said pot-smokers are lazy.
This guy is a MAJOR Hustler.
That is the myth they want to promote... but we know better. Everything in moderation.
Wil E. Haze is the most motivated pothead
Now this is investing in rare fishes.
Mans is so passionate about what he does. It’s pure and it shows in the fact he makes a living from it 🙏🏽✨
Making a business from something you love,it doesn't get better.
I love seeing this!! Keeping fish is so good for our mental health. Plus, there is a great support system around the world of other fishkeepers. Sharing an apartment/house with anyone is risky. It is wonderful to have enough space for our fish without needing someone else's approval. When someone I dated years ago said, "It is either me or the horse", I said, 'There is the door'!! I don't have a horse at the moment, but I do have plenty of aquarium tanks and would say the same thing again regarding fish. I too sleep surrounded by fish tanks. There are many of us who do. I love it that you pray to God. Thanks, Malik, for sharing your video!!! USA/Canada
Amazing stuff. Glad to see more fish keepers/breeders in Ontario doing it right
Good for you buddy. I loved seeing someone immersed in what they love.
