I used to get together with Joss to discuss what we wanted the new characters to do. I knew I would have a stunt double for her but we wanted her to practice the "in between" acting that she would need to do to set her apart from Buffy. I had her watch Bruce Lee going insane when his teacher was murdered in "Fist of Fury/Chinese Connection" and had her practice the same punch/kick/stake moves that I gave to Sarah - only I wanted her to mimic the anger of Bruce. She did it and Joss loved it.
Very, very true. Sarah is an extremely skilled actress. I was always impressed by that and I've always bragged about how good she was in the role. I only want Sophia, myself and the rest of the stunt people to be credited with what we do for these types of shows. I'll try to share more clips of the actors. As long as everyone looks their best I don't think they should mind. In fact, some from the BUFFY crew have asked me to use more video of them. It's sort of like our school Yearbook.
Definitely, this fighting style that meets these beautiful movements, and the technical quality of how they were displayed, were a big key point for the success of the series!
My fave show ever! Love Buffy & Faith, always nice to see behind the scenes, the stunts were brilliantly executed great work, thanks so much Jeff, Buffy wiil always be my fave :-)
Thank you for the behind the scenes of Buffy. I always love seeing Buffy vs faith fight the most. Watching Sophia Crawford and Karen Shepherd are very good fight choreography and true martial arts in real life
If you look closely you can see that its not really them fighting, haha I'm only kidding! I am in love with these videos; as a kid I would watch them all the time and would memorize them and would practice them with my brothers. This show changed my life, I am twenty years old now and am a fitness guru, this show really inspired me! Thank you for uploading these, Jeff.
Oh please, I ADORE Sophia and Jeff's work (best fights ever on screen for me), but give SMG her due, leading actress on such a brutal show (hours, scripts, different nuances in acting) - and as an actress you learn to hold back to give more: on this shot she won't be having an emotional close-up, no need to overdue it. Look at her big scenes (in te first seasons) she's a great actress who knows how and when to deliver.
Season 3 really had some of the best fight scenes on the show I must say. Though I always wonder why Oz (Seth Green) was always used very little if at all in many of the major fight scenes. Was that just an issue of Whedon not really having anything to do for him with fights or did you guys have trouble finding the right stunt double for him at times? I always thought he should've been used more. It still amazes me Seth left Buffy for more film roles (rumored), Oz had great fight potential.
I was so excited when I stumbled across these videos. HUGE Buffy fan and it's great to fully see all the stunt work behind the scenes. You guys are amazing. Please keep uploading because I'll definitely keep watching!
Thank you for sharing these vids, that Cris guy doesn't know what he's talking about, the fights in buffy were awesome, especially the sword fight between buffy and angel. I heard Sarah say in an interview she was supposed to swim in a commercial as a child, but she didn't know how, but she lied and said she did, so she just jumped in the water and started swimming. So that goes to show she does the very best she can and then some, this show was amazing, don't listen to the haters.
Thanks for the upload. Huge Buffy/Angel fan. Its nice to be able to see behind the scene's and see the hard work of the crew. Specifically the stunt crew and the pain and focus they go through.
Thanks for uploading these! I can't even imagine how much work and planning must get into matching these shots up with those of the regular cast. Simply amazing. One question though: Do they have the regular cast voice over the fighting grunts and yells? Or do they just use the ones we hear the stunt doubles making?
Thank you for sharing these videos! I always find it interesting to look behind the scenes of television shows and movies that I have enjoyed, and your clips posted on youtube offer a look into Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel that I have not seen before, and am very glad to watch. Thank you again not only for posting these videos, but for working so hard on the stunts in the first place. Your work is definitely to be admired and applauded.
Hey, Jeff. Firstly, I want to thank you for sharing all of your amazing Buffy videos with us. They're fantastic to watch and seeing the whole stunt process is amazing. Secondly, I was just wondering if you have any videos from Five By Five, Enemies or Release?
First scene of Buffy I ever saw. Didn't have enough context at that point to think of continuing to watch the show (that came years later), but the fact that I still to this day remember accidentally having caught this fight sequence at a point when all I knew about Buffy was "some B movie about a cheerleader fighting vampires that somehow got turned into a show" might mean something. For one thing, it speaks for how distinct the fight sequences were from each other.
No wonder she was so burned out by the end of Buffy and the fighting got more simple. Imagine the time it took just for the action scenes alone, not even weighing in having to work on lines, dialogues and emotional scenes. Jesus, Sarah Michelle Gellar deserves way more credit as an actress. I mean, they all deserve more credit.
These are stunt doubles fighting not The actual actors who play buffy & faith! They only stepped in when the camera would show their face truthfully! So the stunt doubles did all the burn out work
@@amberbernay lol you can see them stepping in in this video. They still showed her face for some fighting stuff like punching and kicking, especially after this stunt woman left BTVS
Just discovered these videos and these are amazing. You guys are amazing. I've always appreciated the work of stunt doubles, but seeing this stuff has elevated that. I believe that part at 4:13-4:24 never made it in to the final sequence, which is a shame. Loved the fight, though. First one between the two, which was fun 'cause I was looking forward to seeing them go at it. Faith was one of my favourite characters.
what a fun job! its cool and interesting how different this is from the end-result, pre-editing, etc (as someone who has never been within a mile of a tv/movie production)
This is why i want to be a stuntwoman. Being apart of a project, eg. Buffy, and seeing the end product and how much of a badass you made your actor look. I love Buffy :)
I'm so glad you have the footage for this one. One of my favourite Buffy fight scenes. btw it's thanks to all this and Buffy in general that I took up karate and acting, so uh thanks for being awesome. If you do happen to read this comment I was just wondering if you have any advice about getting into the stunts business? Thanks :)
Cris - Stop spamming every Buffy video (others as well as mine) with your copy & paste comments. Sarah had ZERO skills. She's a great actress - just not a physical person. She was just a typical girl; NOT a martial artist. We worked hard to make her do a single punch. Had we tried to make her do an entire fight scene they would be very short and would suck beyond belief. These stunt vids are for the people who enjoyed the stunts. If you hate it so much, please don't watch.
A have one question like in 0:33 why they used someone else if they dont touch and it was easy? I understand with the acrobatics fights but that was not dangerous. Great job and thanks for the vids I'm not trying to be critical just had that question
Karen Walker the awesome thing about professionals or any elite level athlete is they can make advanced skills look incredibly easy. These professional stuntmen spend years training their martial arts skills with that entails accuracy, control, timing, speed and power... so they can throw punches full speed and stop inches from the face not because it’s easy but because they developed that level of control. Not to motion they have the conditioning to do it take after take with the same intensity and still utilizing the same level of control... if you were to put two untrained actors to do the fights and have them go as intense as the stuntmen are going an injury most definitely would occur. And the safety of all the performers is vital.
Stuntees are awesome! Is theater Stunt training just as intricately worked out, as Holliwoods. I was a date DeVille when I was younger. Learned basic training in Theater. It was hard but so much fun. Like Spike's line you know you want to dance Slayer. Stunt training reminds me of dance classes. Step by step, till you feel you can do the moves just right. Not enough respect for Stuntees, as much as the Actors. Bless you guy's. 📺🤛🏼❤️🤘🏻
Hey, Jeff, quick question -- How long did it take to develop Faith's fighting style? I love how Buffy was always the traditional martial artist and Faith, being angry, was a bit animalistic. Was this something Joss requested? Did it come about organically? I love your work! :)
I'd also really appreciate a look at your work on Graduation Day. The fight between Buffy and Faith is one of my favs, and the one I used to re-enact a lot.
Jeff- do you have Karen and Sophia's individual fights with Lagos? Or the fight with the vamps at the beginning? Revelations was a big fight episode it be really fun to see those fights.!
Do you have the fight from season two episode "Halloween " where Buffy fights the vamp at the pumpkin patch? Sophia did a super fast punching combo and I would love to see it!!
First off, thank you Jeff for sharing all these videos! I've watched them all and just loved them! Uggg, Boreanaz! Guy seemed like such a clown (not in a good way) but hope I'm wrong!
That one I didn't video. I consider that little fight the start of the real Buffy style. Prior to that we were held back. This one Joss and I did together and he liked it so I got to start adding more as we went along.
As much as I love SMG, and I really do love her to death, I would consider Sophia the true SLAYER, while I consider SMG moreso the CHARACTER of Buffy. Basically the two combined are a match made in Heaven and make Buffy the icon that she is.
KellGy A That’s why I said the two together were the perfect combination that made Buffy who she is, which was the character portrayed by SMG and the badass fight/stunt skills of Sophia. You can see from seasons 5-7 that the fighting had significantly changed, and the “slayer” part of Buffy just wasn’t up to par with what we’ve been seeing, and that part of Buffy had disappeared. It’s more acceptable for stunt doubles to change for characters in a show like Charmed because most of the time they just wave their hands and CGI takes over and never do hand to hand combat, but many of us really appreciate the martial arts aspect of Buffy as well because she was known to be a warrior. I know it’s hard for you to understand because you mainly care about the acting and couldn’t care less about fight scenes...so to each their own I guess 🤷♂️
I practiced kung-fu in my childhood this bring me happy memories of my childhood. Is this kung-fu or what kind of martial arts did they practice??? Btw sorry for my english, I can't practice it at all! 😢 P.S. I'm your fan, this show had the best fight coreographies and stunts.

Of course, and that should remain the point of your vids and these comments: not dish other people, but further our undying devotion to your and Sophia's craft haha - I'd be the last person to refute that, Sophia being not only talented but oh so nice (taking the time to respond in details to a question concerning training on FB for example, it was so classy of her - and a great help for my kicks ha). So this page should be dedicated to the stunt crew!!
(and great if you can show more of the crew, there wont ever be too much of Buffy fights "making of"s! Especially if you have more of the "Innocence" fight, I know you already uploaded a bit of you and Sophia rehearsing, but do you have films of behind-the-scenes footage during the day you shot it?? That would so awesome!)
As a scenery freak I was hoping for inadvertent shots of industrial Santa Monica : ) As an old MA I truly appreciated what Jeff and Sophia added to this show, but watching MA, for me, isn't as exciting as scenery (I know, I know, I probably need medication : )).

These videos show the idea that the main focus of the fight scenes was to show the skills of stunt but forgot that who should identify the character is her actress. It is very strange and nothing interesting to see the character change the physical shape all the time. Sophia is an amazing martial artist, never saw a woman so skilled and fast as her, but the fight scenes should be made based on the physical abilities of Sarah, the stunt should act only for the really difficult moves.
Im looking for the clip when Faith as Buffy is in the church and she she says something like. I cant do that cause thats bad. She meant it. I love this show we still watch the dvd's Its so dam funny. "Spike do you love my insides as much as my outsides?" lol
I know it was only a choreography rehearsal but 'Faith' seemed to wait for 'Buffy' to stop her plunging the stake into 'Angel'. Or SMG was slow on her cue.
It's the war movies and TV shows area made. You have to ensure the safety of all the performers so you use movie magic. You film it with your actors in a pace that's not going to get anyone injured and then you film your stunt people and then you combine the two shots in editing. There you can remove any delay in time so when you see it on tv its looks as if it's happening as quickly as the heat of the moment!
I figured just that! Sophia is incredibly fast, a great martial artist. The demo videos are great, like your fight choreography, the movements you chose! The edited version of the series that bugs me, is polluted! I believe that an actress who plays a role of these should have more consciousness of the character!
The Buffy vs Faith fights was the best in the show.
Back when television shows took time to make action scenes cool without crappy cgi
Cobra Kai has very good action choreography. 90s shows like Stargate SG-1 used plenty of CGI.
I used to get together with Joss to discuss what we wanted the new characters to do. I knew I would have a stunt double for her but we wanted her to practice the "in between" acting that she would need to do to set her apart from Buffy.
