I'm English by birth, but have now lived in Canada for 33 years. I found your show, and love it - it's so English! It's like being among friends. I was travelling for work and found myself in a small town in northern Manitoba, where I found a used book store. There were numerous copies of books I have just listened to you talk about, that I would not otherwise think I want to read - I gravitate towards mystery novels as a rule. I found two by Alice Sebold, another by Kate Morton, and others you reviewed. I bought them all and I'm looking forward to expanding my reading horizons! Keep up the good work!

ohh, i feel you! i am also a slow reader, i can literally read one book for many months. sometimes i feel insecure about it when i see others consume the same amount of books in a month, that i consume in a year. but i am trying to convince myself that it doesn't make me any worse of a reader.

I read slowly too. I sometimes wonder if they are really reading the book. It seems suspicious to me. I'll be lucky to get twenty.

I agree - and I don't think it shows much respect to the author who has spent hours trying to find the right words and phrases to communicate exactly what they want to say (I should know 😂)

Elly Griffith sets most of her novels in North Norfolk from whence I hail My own particular favourite is "The Crossing Place". She is also a passionate admirer of Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" one of the first detective novels and still a highly compulsive read.

A great Stephen King book to read without all the ghosts and goblins is 11/22/63. It's about a man who goes back in time to prevent Kennedy's assassination. And while I haven't read all of King's books, the ending of this one is my favorite. (BTW, I ordered The Left Hand of Darkness based on your recommendation in a previous video.) 🙂

I have never read Elly Griffith, I look forward to seeing if it’s my kind of thing. It’s nice to hear that you like to take your time to enjoy reading , I also do as books that I was required to read at a certain pace I can no longer remember in detail.
    Take care

Thanks to your great recommendation in one of your videos, I went to our city library here in New Zealand and got out "The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry." I absolutely loved it and couldn't put it down. I finished it almost in one sitting, I think.
I love your channel. I find I don't gravitate to books that are the cliché "mens" books (If there's such a thing). I love hearing the way you articulate your reading experiences and share your passion. I'm drawn to a lot of the books you are sharing about. And if not those specific books, what I've found so helpful about your channel is the books you share about lead me on book hunting exploration adventures, looking for and discovering books in the same vein etc.
So thank you for your channel and the time you take to present us with your experiences and books to be read. I love it. And you do a great job! As someone who is early on in the reading journey, I love your channel.

Hi Aaron - thank you so much for your lovely comments, it means a lot to me! I know what you meant about men's books (e.g. certain well known writers in the spy/thriller genre - which are of course excellent, but do tend to have a higher male following), and I am glad you are interested in the books I talk about. Thanks for watching 🙂

Not a spoiler but seeing the raven featured on the cover of your copy of "Barnaby Rudge" reminded me that Edgar Allan Poe read the Dickens novel shortly before composing his wonderfully haunting poem "The Raven" ("ah distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December...") which is a quintessential Winter read!

I have not read most of the authors you mentioned in this video and welcome your suggestions. I have enjoyed most of the books in the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths. Because the relationship between Dr. Galloway and Det. Nelson is a continuing story I recommend you read them in order beginning with The Crossing Places. And even though it would add another title to your list, I recommend People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. It is a multi-timeline historical mystery. A young conservator works to save a water damaged Hebrew text from the fifteenth century Spain. In the spine she finds an insect fragment, crystals of salt, wine stains, and a white hair. These help her reveal stories of the people involved with preserving this book. A fascinating story by an excellent writer.

Hello! recently found your channel and thoroughly enjoying listening to your summaries with my cuppa tea this morning! wrote down a few recommendations. Was much like catching up with an old friend with some of these you discussed.) Loveeeeed all the Penny Vincenzi books and was quite sad to hear when she passed away. This one you talked about, sounds familiar to me - and wondered if it was re-released under another title? (hate when publishing does that - thinking you haven't read it ... purchase and find it was one you've already read 😵‍💫. I have a few Rachel Hore books on my shelves and haven't read one yet. A couple of authors that I love - that you've probably already read, but ... Susanne Kearsley and Lucinda Riley. Have you read anything by Susan Howatch? don't here her books talked about much on book-tube - but to this day Penmarric and Cashelmara are two my all time favorite books. @@booksfrommybookshelf Thank you so much for your response. I have read some of the Shardlake series but I am unfamiliar with Rory Clements. I will definitely check into his work. With the Tudors you have a soap opera of drama. Every time we have visited England I drag my poor husband to Hampton Court or to the Tower. He has no interest in the Tudors but he loves me. I was devastated when Mantel died. I enjoy Weir’s fiction (and nonfiction). I want to read her novel on Henry VIII: The King’s Pleasure. I am interested in this because we usually read about his wives. I want to see what she does with dear old Henry. Another fiction book that she had coming out is on his daughter Mary: The Passionate Tudor. It will not be released in the US 🇺🇸 until May 28th. She has a lot of books I would like to reread. Great to hear Phillipa Gregory has a new book!! I loved The Other Boleyn Girl and feel a bit like re-reading it. Will you tell me about your books? I would like to find them! My cat's name is Dickens, by the way, not after Charles though -- it's because he is full of beans and always raising hell. The best book I read in 2023 was Demon Copperhead. I was very late to Memoirs of a Geisha but that one, too, wowed me last year. I think I would like the Stonehenge book. I am currently trying to read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but I can't make any headway at all. The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins on the other hand transports me right into the 19th century. Incidentally Kate Morton is probably my favorite author.

Apologies, i think this is going to be a long comment. Thanks for some more excellent ideas. I have read all the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway novels and enjoy them very much, have you read the excellent Kate Ellis and in particular her Wesley Petersen series which are similar and feature an historic back story. I have read most of Peter Robinson's books including the one mentioned, he writes the Inspector Banks novels which were televised with Stephen Tomkinson in the role of Banks, although Caedmons Song doesnt feature him. I too have Advent and Dawnlands as yet unread on my shelves. Sadley Eleanor Oliphant wasn't my 'cup of tea' and didnt live up to the hype for me but I know it was very popular with many readers. I too enjoy Kate Moreton with her past infringing on the present and will have to investigate your books and the Pre History Guys sounds like my thing too. Well that was a great ride!! I could t write down the titles fast enough!😂 I love Anthony Horowitz. I’ve read his series that he incorporates himself as himself into the novels! Such fun. Also his magpie murder series. I have read a few of Ruth Galloway and unfortunately found them very poorly written. Very shallow and plot quite predictable . Sorry to say that but they aren’t as good as they sound in my opinion. Kate Morton is an all time favourite author of mine and last summer I read her latest, Homecoming. I gave it 4/5! My favourite by her is The Clockmaker’s Daughter. Thanks for a fun and lengthy video! You’ve earned a cup of tea now!❤🇨🇦

Thank you! Oh yes - I loved the Magpie Murders - brilliant cast too. Ruth Galloway seems to split the vote a bit, so I'll be interested to see what I think 🙂

One Day is a good read the film is ok but couldnt get past anne Hathsways accent I've heard good things about the tv adaption. I wish I hadn't given my copy of Eleneor Ollyphant away as would love to re read it. Im currently reading Rachel Joyces perfect i loved the unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry amd her short stories.

Hi. Revival by Stephen King is probably a good place to start. Not as scary as some of his others and it does have a deliciously odd ending. Enjoy! 😊

Try “Us” by David Nichols. Much better than “One Day”.

I much prefer Sharon Kay Penman over Phillipa Gregory, who I find to be a bit overwrought.

All those books sound interesting. I love Phillipa Gregory's books. Ken Follett's Kingsbridge and Century series are brilliant too. Talking of comedians as authors, Ben Elton is a very good writer. 'Two Boys' is a fantastic novel based on his family's history. I highly recommend it. Thanks for your interesting vids. I love your little dog. Yorkies are so lovable.😊
