I absolutely loved Hitch Hiker’s Guide when it was on radio. Laughed out loud over and over. A great experience.

What a Brilliant idea for January - books to cheer you up. Here in Chicago we've just had 12" of snow, the daytime temperature is -5C and falling. Time to cosy up indoors and read a funny book. I've read all of the books you mentioned except the Thursday Murder club, which I'm going to request from my library. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was recently made into a movie with Jim Broadbent in starring role and Penelope Winton as his wife. Also High Fidelity was made into a movie in 2000. Starring John Cusack, it was set in Chicago but apparently was faithful to the original storyline. Another funny book for your viewers is The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. The life of a lonely bookstore owner is changed when a small girl is left in his bookstore. Very funny observations on small children , a romance and a happy, hopeful ending.

Thanks! Yes, I've only just become aware of the film of Harold Fry - and 2 of our best actors too - I must try and see that! Thanks for the recommendation too!

Oh my goodness, I've loved so many of these myself, I love the fact that so many more older people become bookish protagonists in heartwarming uplifting books, but also clever books. You must read Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, I think you'll love it! It's about a group of 'air hostesses' who've actually worked for a secret British organisation as spooks (think more along the lines of black ops agents for MI6) who are about to retire when the company decides to throw them a party on a yacht... And that's when things get interesting...

I love your book reviews. You focus on books I actually want to read whereas some reviewers talk about books you should read but don’t. Many thanks for being so relatable. I live in New Zealand so we have very hot weather at the moment and I envy your cooler climate

The one series of books that are always guaranteed to raise many a chuckle at any time of the year must be Sue Townend's Adrian Mole stories. Every one of them is laugh-out-loud hilarious but for me the very best is "Adrian Mole And The Weapons Of Mass Destruction" which - quite literally - made me fall out of bed with laughter!

Elinor Oliphant is Fine is one of my favorite books ever. It is so good! I had forgotten about High Fidelity. I saw the movie when it first came out and loved it. John Cusack is great. I desperately want to like the Richard Osman series but I didn’t like the characters in the “home.” I’m going to go back and try again. Harold Fry was great. Your descriptions of the books brought a smile to my face!!

I read the Elinor Olefant book - it's so good! I think you will really enjoy it! I'm very interested in a couple of those that you mentioned - particularly, Thursday Murder Club and The Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I think I may put those on my TBR list! Thanks for a great video!

I saw this video about a month ago. Even though you hadn't read "Eleanor Oliphant" at the time of video, your description of the book made me want to read it. I just finished this book today. It would definitely go in my "Hard to put down" list. So many off the title character's thoughts and remarks are just funny and surprising througout the story. Towards the end I needed tissues closes by. I highly recommend this one. Thanks for introducing the book.

Eleanor Oliphant hit me really hard. I loved it so much, but there are some parts that are traumatic, particularly if you've ever struggled with depression. People have discussed whether Eleanor is autistic, and I must say I resonate with some of her habits. Others have said that all of her behaviors are a trauma response.

    • @booksfrommybookshelf
      @booksfrommybookshelf  10 місяців тому +2

Thanks for this - I hope, though, that ultimately it is uplifting. When I read the description, I wondered about autism. It sounds fascinating - I think books dealing with depression and trauma are extremely important.

Thanks for the terrific list. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned him, but, as someone who loves Douglas Adams, I wonder if you’ve read any Jasper Fforde. His Thursday Next series begins with The Eyre Affair. Thursday Next is a Special Operative in Literary Detection who investigates the kidnapping of characters from literary fiction. Great fun.

The lighting and your lovely dog make this a very cozy video.
You've piqued my interest regarding High Fidelity, not a book or author I've ever considered reading before.
Eleanor Oliphant is a great book but very sad and depressing, definitely something to think about when picking books in January I think.
BJD - my favourite film ever. When I read the book I was surprised at how different it was to the film, namely that Mark Darcy comes across as a lot more lovely and even more obviously head over heels for her than he was in the film. A lovely book and film.
    Great list.

I've been reading indigenous trickster stories to get through January. 'Motorcycles and Sweetgrass' has a foolish god starting a feud with some racoons. 'One Good Story, That One' by Thomas King has Coyote playing tricks on the first people...Adam and Eve? Really any Thomas King is fantastic. 'Indians on Vacation' keeps changing when I re-read it.

I was scratching my head, trying to figure out why the plot of "The People on Platform 5" sounds so familiar, and yet I don't recall reading that title. It turns out that I have read it but the title was changed for North American readers to "Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting." It seems strange that a perfectly good title would change but there you go.
