She DOES have feelings. The comment about "never know what [the sun] feels like" meant she wouldn't know the warmth on her skin, like a normal human.
Cortana has (at least to herself) on several occasion mentioned her feelings, including falling in love with John (Halsey comments that since Cortana's brain is essentially a younger version of her own, she herself must have strong feelings for him too - but more in the way a mother loves a child).

I think you made an error in your interpretation of Cortana's comment that she will never know if the sun "feel's real". I think she was implying that as a non-physical piece of software, she would not be able to feel the warmth on her skin. I think this alludes more to a longing of being human or physical than to a lack of emotion. This is backed up by her saying "I have waited so long to do that" when touching the Masterchief's chest plate.

Fun fact: rampancy is actually sped up if an AI realizes that it's going to die because it wastes the remaining tissue more quickly than normal by constantly trying to think its way out of death.

That theme music still gives me goosebumps and shivers up my spine. Halo is honestly my favorite game franchise and universe.
Eight minutes in, you screwed up. Cortana says she'll never know if that artificial sun feels real. You go into a dissertation about her being unable to feel the emotion, but that is a complete misunderstanding on your part. Cortana has emotions, but no tactile sense. She means she literally can't feel the sunlight on her skin, because she has no skin to feel. This whole speech of hers is born of emotional feeling, but she's talking about physical feeling.
I was going to bring that up, but I knew enough to read the comments first. a very good observation. kind of makes me think that these guys do t do full km research when posting shit. or at the very least, their comprehension of cortana is essentially shit.

That whole bit about sunlight on her skin was a setup for the end, when she puts her hand on Master Chief's chest and says, "I've waited so long to do that." That was the moment she was able to actually touch him, thanks to her evolution to true sentience, though I think being contained within the advanced Forerunner systems were what gave her the tactile sense.
+ProjectDv2 You miss the point though. What if the point of the speech was because she knows she can't be human? She can't feel the sun because she doesn't have a physical body. With the mood and tone of her voice in that scene, she seemed to be lamenting that fact. It alludes to her current stage of rampancy.

She's talking not of feelings, but of FEELING, she means she will never feel the heat emanating from the star against her skin like a flesh and blood being can.
Actually...when she said "I can't feel it." She may have meant that she literally couldn't feel the heat, or lack thereof, of the sun. Cortona clearly feels emotions.
Chemical minds, like our own, are also just responding to stimuli. One could even say that our brains are pre-programmed. Of course our brains have neuro-plasticitiy, and therefore can manipulate themselves based on various stimuli, but the same exact thing can be done with electrical neural networks. It's just that electrical neural networks are limited by the number of neurons available. If there is a way to generate new electrical neurons (currently not possible as far as I know), then it would be possible to make a completely human-like artificial brain.

I always felt that when Cortana talks about the sun "feeling" real she meant physically feeling. Like "hey chief, is that sun hot?"
Master chief is a human who acts like a machine, while Cortana is a machine that acts like a human.

I think the "feeling" line was a reference to the fact that she is part of an A.I. because she doesn't have a physical form.

Love the video(s) but one thing that bugs me (guy on the internet has a correction to make? no way!). When she says she can't feel if the suns real... that's not 'feelings' thats physical feel. Like, she can't 'feel' the heat. She can tell that fire is hot because of crap she can tell but she can't physically feel if it's real. Which is a wholly different thing then emotional feelings. Shes got emotional feelings out the wazzoo about all kinds of shit, but she can't physically touch anything. Least not till the end of Halo 4 (spoilers?).

Cortana is my favorite character in Halo because of her complexity. Honestly, compared to Chief, she feels strangely relatable. It's also pretty much amazing how she seems like a real person but clearly states she cannot feel things, like the warmth of the sun (obviously not the exact quote but whatever) but knows all about its info. I adore the chemistry between she and the Chief, and it grew in Halo 4 in my eyes (it probably already existed in the books but I haven't read enough of those to be affected). I adore how very "machine" both characters are, which allows them to work together so damn well, but simultaneously both are very human; as evidenced at the end of Halo 4. Cortana had such an impact on Chief that, for a fraction of a second, he allowed his guard to fall himself in order to feel emotion. All the while, it was a genuine first time he struggled with remaining stoic. Even though Halo has very little room for shipping, I have always supported these two as a couple simply because they are literally so close to each other, even though it was mainly one-sided and only expended upon in Halo 4. People still probably are hurt from the disappointment of that game, but it opened so many doors. For over ten years, Chief and Cortana had maybe as much conversation as two strangers did within an hour (if you do not count whatever transpired in the books, I imagine) and yet, because of how the relationship was written, you knew how close these two are. Most of Halo 3 consisting of Cortana haunting his memory and him hunting for her is one giant hint to this fact. So little said yet so much inferred. It's brilliant to me. The best thing about Cortana is honestly her wit and snark. She would not be what we know and love without these traits. It's like when Wall-E briefly lost his quirks at the end of the movie. I know everyone hypes up the badassry of Chief like he's all that exists in the Halo universe, but this would definitely not be the case without Cortana completing him. Cortana has just felt more interesting than Chief for this reason, but thanks to her, I gained a new perspective and semi-respect for Chief.
This was good. One of my favorites!

Good vid. Hoping with Halo 6 and beyond MC will be able to save Cortana. I remember one of the MS developers saying at the root of it, Halo is a love story between the two, and I always enjoyed that part of the story as well and how the two of them were just like husband and wife, helping each other through life.
I had to watch the first part of this video several times because I kept drifting off and listening to the theme in the background

I believe Cortana meant not being about to PHYSICALLY feel. She can still feel EMOTIONALLY.
Ohhhhhhh so that one tidbit about how her need for exponential expansion requires a planet-wide complex computer network COULD explain how something like the Precursor Domain would "cure" Cortana of rampancy... A Galaxy-Wide infinitely powerful network would provide the AI with all the space they could ever need to grow and flourish... I watch a lot of Halo channels but this is the first time I ever heard anything mentioned about that aspect of rampancy, kudos to you sir!

Cortana is one amazing AI- I mean, woman. Rampancy meant she literally "thought herself to death" as the story says. I haven't played the Halo 5 yet, but I wish she has a return as a physical being to continue what she left at Halo 4's end.

Couldn't keep watching after the assumption that the inability to feel something means the lack of emotions. There is a difference between the ability to SENSE something and the ability to PROCESS something. Cortana is clearly referring to the ability to sense it. It is like wondering if everybody experiences the same colour the same way. Each of us may see it, but as soon as the light hits of visual sensory organ(eye), it begins a biochemical reaction that is purely unique to the individual. Yet we can still react to that unique experience and come to a consensus about what colour it is.
Cortana, on the other hand, does not have eyes, nor an optic nerve, nor a brain. She does not have skin to feel the warmth. She is an entity of pure intellect. She sees and feels through electronic sensors. She expresses how she can never experience something how a human could experience something.
On this they actually diverge from the novels, since the AI B.B. gives very clear description of it's experience while in Naomi's(Spartan 010) armor in the book Glasslands.

That is a really good lore video. I like and am more intrigued with Cortana's story than I am of that of Chief's. I believe none could have existed without the other and the fact that Cortana is being described as jealous and rampant and rageful is utterly unfaithful. Just like many thought that in Halo 5 master chief was actually a betrayer which now we all know he is and never was and never will be a betrayer. just a side note, master chief has proven time and time that he doesnt care about his own existence if it meant that he would save humanity, he has time and time put on that so called death wish mission suit on and still managed to survive it all. so it makes zero sense that master chief would ever be a betrayer who is being hunted down by lock and brought to trial of some sort. but now they are trying to show that Cortana is a betrayer because she refused to die after her expiration date. This is also inaccurate in a sense that if this is really the case, it wouldnt make sense as parallel to the situation where master chief would have been the betrayer. the point is, neither master chief nor cortana are betrayers. now we have a solid conclusion that chief is not but all fingers are pointing at cortana. even after halo 5's weak campaign ending, we still have no idea if cortana is the real enemy here. sure she tried to shut down the unsc infinity but that doesnt mean she was trying to be hostile to them or kill them or harm them. she is just trying to complete a task she has on hand. that task is not well described in this game because it was just introduced to us. so we have to just wait and see what exactly is cortanas plan. even though what she has done (which is either creating/cloning or summoning guardians to local proximity to aid her succumb and survive her current status) might seem harmful, we have no evidence of it actually harming anyone yet. at some point chief asks how many people have died because of you bringing guardians here? and she replies, excuse me? so that number might actually be 0. we dont know if anyone has really died because of cortanas recent work!
now how about that time she saved us all from flood and activation of halo ring? how about when she selflessly sacrificed herself so master chief could stop didact even if it meant for master chief who is cortanas beloved match to be destroyed too. so both master chief and cortana are selflessly and willingly have time and time proved that they will do the right thing no matter the cost. our faith in master chief is without a doubt restored, if it was distorted by the halo 5 trailers and betrayer slogan and lock's introduction to bring john home to trial and what not. but now most of you think that the problem is cortana and she is the evil one. which right now if logic is any indication what so ever, halo 6 is not gonna be about humans vs cortana, a fight to death. most of it might seem like we are fighting a new enemy called cortana army but at the end of halo 6, or by mid halo 6 we will realize that we need cortanas strength to protect us from greater threats, possibly another galaxy invasion where we need to form bonds between us and guardians to elongate our survival. that would be a far better plot for halo 6 than us vs. cortana and either we all die or cortana dies. so lets just hope in halo 6 we might be in conflict with cortana at first but either we realize that she means well, or a greater threat is out there that forces us to form alliance with cortana and all is well.
i really like cortana and i think it would be a loss if they got rid of her. halo campaign and story without cortana is like trying to play an online game without internet connection. its just too much to miss out on. like the video says, cortana might be the largest library of knowledge. one she is worth alot, and two you dont what such enemy.

Your video makes a ton of sense especially if you have paid attention to the scene in between missions two and three in Halo 5, and also remember the fact that the Librarian did "something" to Cortana on the mission Reclaimer in Halo 4. I do not think she entered metastability at the end of Halo 4, but she was not far.
Also, the scene in the middle of the second Halo 5 mission. A bunch of lets players have it on their channels.
