It’s good to see you again, I hope you’re enjoying your time in Hawaii. That MRE brought back some memories for me. Our family used to visit France every year for a few weeks in the summer. This was in the 70s and 80s when our supermarkets didn’t have the same amount of imported food that we have today. I still remember how good the food tasted, French jam was so much nicer than British and the cheese selection was huge compared to home! I also remember that you were allowed to hunt wild boar in some parts of the country so they’re probably still doing that today. I thoroughly enjoyed your story and your wife is beautiful. God bless you from Scotland,UK
Gillian, great memories of visiting France, I'm sure. I'd like to go there some day and rent a home in the country for a month just to see what France is like away from the touristy areas. Sounds like you got to do that. TFW from Scotland!

Hello sir, Thank you for that review of our RCIR. I'm going through basic training to be an NCO, I have to admit I dont really enjoy our MRE, but to be honest, seeing you enjoying it make me think twice about how lucky we are to have this. I heard a lot of stories about how a french MRE were traded for two US MRE anyways. It was really funny to watch, thank you sir.
Great to see another video posting. It's been a while. I think you spoiled us by posting one a week, for the first month or so, around the first of the year! What a feast. That French MRE, looks like it would be extremely filling, with lots of calories, for a 24 hour period. It kinda makes the MRE's for our troops, pale in comparison. That main dish looks like a Spanish dish that I've heard of, but, can't remember the exact name. Filled with rice, and all different kinds of meats and veggies. Even the picture on the container, reminded me of it, before you opened it up. Thanks for a great video, tell Ace hi from me, looking forward to more. God bless.
Paella is a Spanish dish. It was called the catch of the day dish because the locals would put whatever they caught with rice and whatever else. It was considered a poor dish, but it's not anymore. I make paella and my family loves it. My great aunt who lived in Sevilla, Spain who I used to visit when I was stationed in Germany use to make this when I would visit because she knew I loved it.
That's funny about how it used to be considered a poor man's dish. I met a guy who grew up on the Outer Banks area of North Carolina, USA. When he was a kid they would go to the local fish market where the fishermen sold their catch. He said the fishermen would sell the kids tuna belly for 10 cents a pound. They used it for shark bait 'cause no one wanted tuna belly. Now the same cut of tuna cost minimum of $30 per pound.......TFW

For your information the pâté was made out of wild boar ( if my translation is right) and you also had cognac in it which is a type of alcohol in France if you didn't know
Bud, As a British Military vet, who has been eating cold rations in the Arctic for days, the last thing I did, was sniff everything I was going to eat, before eating...Just sayin 😆
When i was in the french army in 1980. There was not hot meal inside, only a cold can of meat . Thankfully we had a little cognac bottle ( few cc) , we used in cold winter mornings ..
Some of the troops when I was in Beirut had a troop carrier full of some brand of Canadian alcohol....it was boxed in a purple bag, as I recall. I'm not sure how they came by it. TFW
Paella is a traditional Spanish dish, but it has many variations and names in the Iberian peninsula, and in neighboring countries, such as France, it is quite common to find the dish and its variations (but the "real" paella is Spanish). Traditional paella is made in a "big" frying pan, the base is saffron rice, which is joined by cold meats, such as chorizo and bacon, seafood, pork and chicken. The Portuguese and Spaniards eat a lot of seafood and fish, and pork and chicken are often complemented with seafood in various dishes. There is, for example, "carne de porco a alentejana" (literally pig meat Alentejo style) in the south of Portugal, with pork, clams, potatoes, white rice, and saffron or rice. You will find a "million" dishes of rice and seafood or with meats all over the peninsula, but rice is more popular in Portugal (we even brought it to Italy). The dish you mentioned, "jambalaya", is heavily influenced by Portuguese and Spanish cuisine, like most "cajun" food, which also has French influences. Also do not forget there are a lot of Portuguese and Spanish emigrants and descendants of emigrants in France, so over the years we have influenced ourselves mutually. The pate of wild boar meats is very popular, and eating boar is not very uncommon in Portugal for example, especially in more rural areas, like my hometown in south Portugal where every hunting season, someone got a boar (got one myself when I was a "kid", but I am not much of a hunting fan), there are even restaurants that specialize in boar dishes... Excellent video as always hope the trip is going alright.
Cajun food is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese ? Their primary influence is French (roux, cochon de lait, boudin, noircissement, écrevisses, etc) Spanish influences in their cooking is as important as Amerindian and African influences meaning some influence but few comparing to the French influence And boar pâté as shown in the MRE ration is made with brandy and a binding with eggs and seasoning with aromatics. Same recipe in Portugal ?
@@bennett1199 Who do you think influenced the French? Besides that, I was not questioning it was the Acadian immigrants that created cajun, that is a given, in my opinion, I was talking about influences. And at least in Portugal, in South Portugal where I am from, you will find the same kind of boar dishes (like I said in my comment), in fact, I had hunters in my family (even hunted when I was young but got bored with it and stopped) and had boar cooked in all possible ways, including a delicious pate made with the liver, heart and innards of the beast we mix with blood, seasoned, and made into a kind of "sausage" (the Portuguese and Spanish always prepared meats almost always in sausage or presunto, jamon form due to the climate, to have meats that would survive a harsh Summer and a harsh Winter without spoiling, and we started using spices due to moorish influence and because it preserved food better). My friends in my hometown often treat me to a boar dinner. As for eating seafood we have done it since pre Roman times, and always had, we are a seafaring culture, the potatoes it was the Spanish that brought them, the tomato so common in south Europe I think no one knows who had the idea, and the rice, yes, the Portuguese again, and from there everywhere (including Italy), and mixed with every good idea we got along the way. Heck, one of our princesses, a queen of the English, even brought the habit of tea drinking, little cookies, and a daily bath, to the King of England - some of us enjoy tea, but we prefer coffee, I like both to be honest. Influences my friend, I was not questioning the Acadian origin, Portuguese cuisine as influenced other cultures cuisine and got influenced by them, spreading it across the world, see where the Japanese "tempura" comes from...
@@joaomarreiros4906 that is exactly what i'm questionning : Portuguese cooking has had zero influence on French cooking : French cooking has been the result of the French chefs since the Roman Empire and French humble people who were astute enough to make the best with their local products. The way you describe "boar pâté" is proof enough of that. Check " terrine de sanglier" and see the difference. And the Portuguese people who came in France were influenced by French cooking and not the other way around. In matter of cooking, we owe you zilch.
Watching this episode and I’m dying. I don’t know what’s funnier? 1. When I was at PI in 07 we still did that. Or 2. Ace having to hear about his mother being, “Hog of the week” 😂😂 Semper Fi, brother!
"Boar" usually means it comes from male pigs that aren't castrated (either wild pig or domestic pigs used for breeding). The testosterone and other hormonal stuff causes the meat to taste different ("boar taint"), which can affect marketability, so most farm-raised male pigs are castrated.

@@RV_Chef_Life I can definitely say that i would rather be eating gumbo than escargot.
My wife makes a great gumbo and Jambalaya. TFW!
@@PFVHL2 thinking French eat escargot is the same of thinking british eats only jellied eels
@@RV_Chef_Life Cuisine in France is the most diverse, Cajun can't be better even in the spiciness with cayenne and espellette pepper as well as dijon mustard
That looked like a great MRE !! Be safe to all !!!
David, thank for that. It was a really good one. TFW
Aww, that’s so cute about your wife too! You’re so proud! 😂❤
She wasn't so sure when I told her the story about her being 'Hog of the Week' three weeks in a row. But once I explained what that meant, she was sort of ok with it.......TFW, Kayla!
Your wife is beautiful, that was a cute story. The candy and paella looked really good.
She still is, after 42 years of marriage! TFW
you make your viewers mouths water! wish we can also experience what you are having!
I'm happy to share the experience. It's fun for me as well.
For your information the pâté was made out of wild boar ( if my translation is right) and you also had cognac in it which is a type of alcohol in France if you didn't know
It was sure good, Guillaume. TFW and welcome aboard!
Great video! Keep up the good work also first
Thanks! Will do! TFW
That is very good and yummy yummy yummy yummy yummy food
Yes it was
Bud, As a British Military vet, who has been eating cold rations in the Arctic for days, the last thing I did, was sniff everything I was going to eat, before eating...Just sayin 😆
You, sir, were much hungrier than I and had fewer options. But I do get it. TFW, Jack!
Hello sir,
What you called oyster, those are mussels 👍🏻
Thanks for your kind words, happy you liked it
When i was in the french army in 1980.
TFW
Great review on a terrific ration
Indeed it was, Chris. TFW!
The moka bar looks really good! Reminds me of a star crunch. I love those things
It was a very tasty and pleasant surprise, Noah! TFW
Keep up the good work, Brother! Me Middle Aged...lol!
That looked awsome that museli looked delious .
Tom, that dish was particularly good. I must say, I would have preferred all seafood. It was delicious, however. TFW
Paella is a Spanish dish. Very, very tasty ❤😋😋
French MRE's are epic.
Great work, epic. And it fits, too. TFW, Jeremy
Back home now, trip went well, tks for the kind wishes. I also appreciate your input on the various cuisines out there. TFW!
@@MeAncient If you ever have the opportunity, try the Portuguese "Arroz de Marisco" (Seafood Rice), it i like a paella of seafood only...👍
Cajun food is influenced by Spanish and Portuguese ? Their primary influence is French (roux, cochon de lait, boudin, noircissement, écrevisses, etc) Spanish influences in their cooking is as important as Amerindian and African influences meaning some influence but few comparing to the French influence
And boar pâté as shown in the MRE ration is made with brandy and a binding with eggs and seasoning with aromatics.
Yo Roman wish you health and safety 🙏🏼
for sure......
Watching this episode and I’m dying. I don’t know what’s funnier?
1. When I was at PI in 07 we still did that.

I personally like before watching. I know I will like them and it shows me which ones I have watched.
"Boar" usually means it comes from male pigs that aren't castrated (either wild pig or domestic pigs used for breeding). The testosterone and other hormonal stuff causes the meat to taste different ("boar taint"), which can affect marketability, so most farm-raised male pigs are castrated.
I was starting to miss the mre videos i didnt think id enjoy them so much but i do starting to like more than aces😂😂
Ty, let's keep that our little secret ;-). TFW!

I really wish videos would be in a time line. One after another in order. I'm always confused. This goes for Ace, Micah and Me Ancient. This was obviously filmed in Hawaii which was 7 weeks ago. I don't get it
Marc, Not sure what you don't get? We filmed a video while on Maui and it took me a few weeks to get to the editing process. I have another one that I'm still working on from Maui. It's part of the whole creative process and life.......Just enjoy each video as it comes out....no time line necessary. TFW!
