I don't know, James. They helped us out quite a bit back in 1778 - 1780. Made the difference for the beginning of our country. I doubt we could have won our independence without the French, my friend.....

FYI, the Prunes in the can were semi dried. Which explains the blackish color. Not compromised. Check in a supermarket for dried prunes, and you'll see they usually look that way. Cheers!

When I heard “navy beans” I perked up. Back in the 60’s my dad worked for a company that paid him once a month. By the end (and I had no idea we weren’t affluent) of the pay cycle my Mom had to stretch a dollar. Navy beans cooked with a piece of salt pork was a staple. Served with homemade biscuits was a treat!

The mint tea is a really nice addition... really good to aid digestion and upset stomachs. That should be something welcome on the field to combat a disagreeable MRE. That should be something included on a lot of MREs. Nice episode, French really do look after the troops.

  • @joaomarreiros4906

From an European tea drinker. Boil your water, then put your tea bags in and let it rest just a little, please, don´t boil water with the tea bags in, it turns your tea bitter and non flavored, I also recommend removing the tea bag when you start to drink it. If you like your ice tea make a normal tea, let it rest, put it in the fridge and, ice tea. As for the coffee, same method, boil water and add your powder coffee, and if you don´t like sugar you can do it the Portuguese (South) way, with a stick of cinnamon on your cup, but do put a little sugar on your coffee, like I do, its better on your stomach, and always remember to drink some water after some strong coffee. And just a curiosity, in the EU almost all cans have that standard way to be open, it avoids a lot of accidents and is more practical. Those pates, they are great with some good rustic bread, but you can use some crackers, some people also like it with cheese.

That white dessert bar with fruits is called nougat, I believe. It's pretty darn delicious. And my French may be rusty but I believe salté means saltine crackers. That food looked really good. It makes me want to make that oriental salad at home. Only thing I can't comment on are the prunes, since I've never had it.

Prunes are added to help things "move" through the body lol.

Hey guys! Great video. Looks like ya tried my suggestion of adding some salt to the bitter coffee. I agree with you, I was never a fan of it. My great uncle said that sugar was hard to get in Germany in WW2, at least for his squad, so, everyone started using salt, which was abundant. I guess it's an acquired taste, LOL! I don't know about that fruit. If it was supposed to be prunes, they looked pretty normal. But, they sure didn't look like the picture on the can. Looking forward to the next one, God bless guys.

There was a story I recall from a Royal Marine buddy who served in Afghanistan that a popular thing that coalition forces would do when passing between checkpoints and bases would trade ration packs between them. He told me that it was common for him to trade out UK ORP's (Operational Ration Packs) with French RCIR Rations because while you'd get some "bad" rations that nobody wanted, the general rule was that you'd get a "close-to-gourmet" meal with any french ration even if it was a bad one.
He did mentioned to me that US Servicemen would try it too but because their packs are more 1-2 meals than 24 hour rat packs, they'd need to give up 5 MRE's for 1 French Ration and they'd be extremely picky as to which MRE they'd want, normally they'll ask for the "best" MRE's and laugh if you try to give 'em mostly the bad ones, like Veggie Omelette

Another tip for making instant coffee less bitter is to first dissolve the granules in a bit of COLD water. Then pour in the hot water. There's chemistry involved, but I forget the details. I just know that it works!

Yes a new video! I sent you a couple of items that will hopefully last longer than food. Semper Fi. The Navy boys should have told you about a pinch of salt in the old coffee.

I have a few French rations the one I reviewed had the boar 🐗 pate and seafood paella and and a sausage main everything was delicious I didn’t like the pate at first because the cognac flavor was really strong but after I let the rest sit in the fridge overnight it mellowed out the isotonic drink tasted like Flintstones vitamins to me. As usual another great review I enjoyed watching 👍🏾

Hey ancient, wonderful channel! I was wondering if you've ever gotten sick from any MRE's, whether you were active, inactive, or during a review from your channel?

Since we tried the French MRE, I don’t think anything else compares. Still had heat tabs left over and the stove for a future hiking trip.

The reason why there were multiple "might contain" stuff in the back of the muesli is because of european labeling rules. If you process any ingredients that might cause allergies in the same facility, you must include them as "might include traces of..." items.

A friend told me that those powdered drink are freeze dried types. Crystals that rehydrate much better and the nutrients tend to be locked in with freeze dried mixes

the reason the stove an fuel tabs work so well, they're genuine Esbit not some cheap crap that smells of fish as far as I know while yhe contents of these packs is purchased by the military most of it is actually civilian stock

Great review as always. I gotta say the last French ration I had had a rancid main dish (the cheese ravioli with pork jowls) even though it showed two years prior to the best by date. Every thing else has always been good. All in all, I think the Spanish rations are the best rations available. Again, great video!
