Maybe you don't mind, but without that you're going to have an "under-heated" result.

I did some research into the history of this thing and it's nothing short of amazing the amount of effort that went into making this taste exactly like cafeteria food, which was also the point (to give that nostalgia feel). Like they had to formulate a sauce that wouldn't turn the bread into soup and also won't cause mold, but still taste like pizza sauce. Apparently the solution was some kind of tomato jelly-paste thing. Same with the cheese too, it's some kind of super american-cheese that has the chew and taste but not the melting point of actual cheese. And apparently at one point they tried to make it "lunchables" style so the cheese, sauce and bread would be separate, which didn't go over well with the test audience (too much fuss in the field). The fun bit was all of the requirements for this thing which apparently required it to be dropped out of high altitude, be able to survive in a moist desert, and be frozen completely and defrosted. Through all of that, the taste nor texture cannot change. It was named the holy grail of MREs for like two decades.
I know it came out after I got out of the Corps, so I never got to taste one when they first came out. My comment section confirms what you said about this MRE was the holy grail of MREs for quite a long time. TFW and I appreciate your input.
When I was in Afghanistan ( Southern Afghanistan HELMAND PROVINCE - mostly but I was all over) but when I was there it was usually so hot I did not often heat up my meals. I would sometimes get two different kind of MRE’s and mix meals together to make them better
when i lived on an army base in louisiana in the early 90's as a youngster, i remember having a spaghetti mre and thinking that it was really good, much better than any canned type pasta

its actually potassium and aluminium, it reacts with the water as an exothermic reaction.... you put the food in first then the water, then roll the open end down and the cardboard sleeve goes over it to seal it up.....

My father in-law was on base in south Carolina for 30 years my wife was born on base in fort Jackson he said it is great to travel the world in the military he gave me military money they used on base it's pretty cool thank you for your service I have a few cases of military MRE and there not bad me and my kids bring them camping all the time

I remember someone back when I was in the army told me how you was to use the TP. He said you put your middle finger thru the middle of one piece of the TP and wipe your butt then grab the TP and wipe up and off the crap. I was like what!
Dear Mr. Ancient, First thing is that I love your content and vids that you do and i look forward to seeing alot more. also sorry that it says Belinda in this comment, but i travel for my job and i grabed the wrong laptop when i left., anyways, i follow you on my normal PC and laptop and very much enjoy your vids and ESPECIALLY your stories for when you served. but i have 2 family members that also serve and they have tought me a few tricks with the MRE's, #1 is the FRH when you put the water in, (YOU HAVE TO DO THIS QUIKLY!!!!) scrunch the chemical pad up with the water and like is said put the MAIN in FAST. or take a half mouth full of water and spit it into the FRH and swish it around (this has something to do with the salt content of the saliva) it will activate the heater very quickly. #2 is when you get one of those drink pouches like the Choc Protein or anything that comes in that pouch, just FOLD the ouch at the fill line and you can accurately put the water in cause the is a crease in the inner package. Once again THANK YOU for your service

I used to get MEATBALLS IN BBQ SAUCE and then get the snack bread and put the meatballs and bbq sauce on the bread and eat it like a make shift pizza.
I wish they had Pizza MRE back when I was in. Wasn’t not a menu option back then. I now going to have to find it to try.
