      but will the SX8200 PRO be the same as the sx8200? in terms of battery life

    • @korecc
      @korecc  5 років тому

      Don't know about the Pro version. SX8200 is plenty for me, it hits max speed on an MBA 2013. If the Pro has the same or an even better controller than the SM2262, I guess it's recommendable as well.

    • @aelaan12
      @aelaan12 5 років тому

      @@korecc Remember that your MB must be upgraded to High Sierra because it needs firmware installed that will work with this. The SX8200 Pro has higher specs and will do ~ 3000 reads and ~2300 writes. But the trick is that the MBA and older MBP do not have the the Link Speed options higher than 5.0 GT/s with a link width of x2. Therefore upgrading it with the PRO version is overkill and will not give you better results. The 2015 and later do have the updated controller that can handle 8.0 GT/s and Link Width of x4 (Remember PCIe 3.0 x4 in the advertisements?)

    Hi,
    Thank you for this nice video. I've read the comments and I don't remember to have seen my question. You often said that the Macbook Air (MBA) won't reach the maximum speeds of the SSD drives anyway. Is that apply for the third generation only, which have a PCie 2.0 X2 rather than the fourth generation, which have PCIe 4.0 X4?
    If fourth generation of MBA can reach that speed (I don't know), would you think that's a good idea to try the XPG PRO 3d NAND (3500/3000 Mo/s) instead of the XPG SX8200 3d NAND (3200/1700 Mo/s).
    Thank you and have a good day!

    First off, great video that is SUPER informative.
    I know I'm coming to this very late, and maybe this is a dumb question. But if I have a macbook air 2015 that has 200 GB worth of data on it, what do you use to transfer all of that over after you have formatted/installed the new drive and booted off a usb? I know OWC has their expensive littler "converter kit" to clone everything over, but is there another way besides uploading everything to the iCloud before the installation and recovering from that? Thanks so much!

    • @korecc
      @korecc  5 років тому +1

      Hi Sean, personally I have tested both and I highly recommend the SX8200 as it consumes way less battery. You can also search for performance comparisons, the difference is not that big - in theory the EVO has a bit more maximum speed, but in real world performance this doesn't really matter. Also, the SX8200 runs cooler, which is a big plus considering NVMe drives start to throttle at around 70°C. I think with the MBP, you can also fit the included heatsink of the SX8200, although it's not necessary. And yes, the adapter is needed.

The performance has improved indeed, but the power consumption has to become an issue. Battery life has down come to around 6 hours with internet and some editing usage. It also decreases by about 15% when the laptop is on hibernate/sleep mode.

      Can't say for sure, but the OWC drive should work if it's a regular NVMe drive.

    I'm getting kind of issue with my 760p installed in my macbook air 2017. When I do the speed test with Blackmagic the read speed is constant between 1200 and 1400, but the write speed at the first two seconds goes up to 1200 +/- and then begins to go slower and slower, sometimes it goes only to 150-250. Do you have any idea why this is happening?. On the other hand, when I use Amorphous DiskMark 1GB the values are goods (1555R - 1389W) but when I make the same test for 16GB the write speed decreases to 680. Thanks.

      Which adapter are you using? Is it shielded with kapton tape?

      Normal sleep & stand by works, just hibernation (usually kicks in after a few hours) doesn't work. Not a big deal.

      @@userunknown112 I tested 3 different drives, this one is great and is also fairly cheap: amzn.to/2YI1Ybi
      As for the adapter, I recommend original SinTech one. You can buy it from their Website in China, but it will take 2 weeks to arrive. On French Amazon it costs around 40 Euros, on Chinese website around 12. But this adapter from Amazon should work too: amzn.to/2YzA7u2
      I assume you're French since you wrote téraoctet :-)

      To disable hibernation. On 2013 & 2014 models, hibernation is unreliable on NVMe drives. Regular deep sleep works fine.

    After following all the steps, I am now restoring it from Time Machine Backup but I am noticing during all this, when I connected my Early 2015 MacBook Pro (with magsafe 2) to charge it, I don’t see Green or Red light turning ON.
    Not sure why? Anyone noticed the same issue?
    The charger is plugged to the wall and connected to the MacBook Pro but no light on it.

      Try an SMC reset. If that doesn't help, open up your MBP and check if everything is alright, especially the battery connector. Hopefully you didn't damage anything when swapping the drive...
