Love this workaround, it is just that the Mac Mini M1 only have two ports. Running this brilliant workaround does take one of the two available slots. What USB dock would you recommend for a set-up like this?
That was a huuuuuuuge point you made about EXFAT vs APFS that I never thought about (or even heard). I'll definitely be trying that out on my next external SSD.

I am upgrading from my 2013 iMAC to a MacBook Air. If I upgrade to 512, is ok to use an external SSD rather than updating to 1TB? I do no gaming. Photos for a hobby are my biggest use. Taking online classes and mild word processing. Also would you recommend upgrading from 8 to 16 GB?
As a german viewer it was interesting seeing you scroll thorugh amazon and having the option to buy a 1 TB SSD for under 50$. In Germany all cost atlest doubble that :(
Thanks for a great video! I have a 27" intel iMac, 2019 with iTB internal SSD. I use bootcamp and need more capacity. How would these external drives perform as the primary boot drive with the Mac OS installed? Compared to the internal 1tb ssd currently on the system? Thanks for your reply!
The internal upgrades are worth it imo The internal drives with proper enclosure costs almost the same, but is external and doesn’t have the advantages of an internal drive
This was so helpful! I'm not the biggest tech person so I usually have trouble understanding these kind of things but you explained it all so well! Thank you
Hi Kyle! Fresh new subscriber here, just found your channel. Love, that you provide compressed info from someone who seems to know what he's talking about. ;-) Don't know, if you read this, but I'll give it a try: ---- After almost 15 (!) years on my early 2009 iMac I finally upgraded to a mid tier 2023 M3 iMac and I'm just loving it. Now the kicker: I just learned from you, that deterogating SSDs can be a problem, which came as a small shocker, as I try to get out as many years out of my 2.400 Euro machine. Prior to my new SSD knowledge, I already bought one of the shiny minisopuru USB hub-stands and equipped it with an WD SN850X 2 TB SSD. My initial plan for this and current setup is, that I use a partion of it as a time machine volume, to automatically backup my internal Mac 512 GB SSD. Do you have suggestions on how to use this setup or add another SSD to reduce wear and tear of the internal one? Anyhow: Happy new year and keep 'em coming! ;-)
Thanks for this video! I'd love to see how these external SSDs deal with real workloads, such as video editing. And how well software such as Davinci Resolve deals with removable disks. Would it mess up my project if I accidentally opened it while the disc is not connected?
Very helpful content. Got me to order the very cute Mac mini and subscribe to the channel. I’ll be going through the rest of your content so I can get up to speed on using and configuring my new tech. Will be interesting learning a Mac after decades of using Windows.
Hi from France, I loved your video , thanks for the recherche and clarity. One area that I don't understand is back-ups. I'm a real fan of keeping several backups of my data, both on-site and off-site. I use both external drives and cloud storage. If I use the type of external drives that you suggest, how can I get this loaded to iCloud and /or Google Cloud ? Second question relates to Final Cut Pro which loads links from the drive and not the full imports, how to I keep this feed from an external drive ?. Please keep you videos coming, they're super instructive.
I decided going with the UGREEN TB4 Enclosure and found out that it was better than the three previous ones that I tried for TB4 Enclosures for a better price than the previous three.
Great video. I recently bought an M4 Mac Mini base (out of curiosity because I am a PC user forever). The only thing missing that I'd like to know is how do you change backups/documents etc to external drive so as to leave the meager SSD inside the Macs reserved only for programs.
I use the same acasis enclosure on my macbook pro m1 pro 16 inch for a bootable macOS just to save my internal ssd from tbw wearout.. the internal ssd speed in my macbook pro is faster than the acasis but it is fast enough to use smoothly because it is as fast as the internal ssd of the macbook air m1..
@Mateo-g5c firstly because it's just as fast, secondly because it gives my system more space to breath and store its apps and a very large amount of files: photo's, videos and music. Finally it means I caqn just unplug it and take it with me somewhere else if I need to.
@Mateo-g5c my external drive is an NVMe drive in a thunderbolt enclosure so is really fast. As for the built in 256GB drive, it just sits there doing nothing. If it were a 512 I'd probably install Asahi linux onto it. I'm also a little paranoid and prefer to be able to take my files with me at times.
@@philmckenna5709 absolutely brilliant. There is no real performance hit that you’d notice and you can scale the storage as you deem necessary. Of course it takes up a Thunderbolt port but I use a dock anyway even for the monitor cable. Either way it’s a lot cheaper than buying a Mac Studio.
I have a question. I want 8TB of SSD storage to back up my photos. I gave about 3TB worth now. If I use an external enclosure with 2-4TB SSD drives, after the 1st drive gets full will it automatically start using the second drive. Or does it consider it a completely different drive?? Thanks in advance.. Love your channel..
i got the 980 pro nvme with a case, 200 dollars in total, but it is as fast as the M2 chipi!! my internal ssd is saved for years to come, been going strong for a year
If you’re using an external on a MacBook and have to plug/unplug the hard drive many times per day, is it necessary to go in and manually “eject” it every single time? Or can hard drives just be removed? I’ve heard conflicting arguments over the years.
hi dude, i have a macbook pro m2 max and want to get more info on enclosure is that staighforward? shall i get the acasis or the zike that last year you were excited about
Kyle ....You are GREAT !! Your videos are informative, interesting and full of good advice. How could anyone complain with someone like you offering FREE guidance to anyone wanting to know MORE about tech things and improving your Apple knowledge of doing things !!? Just a question...is there any benefit in getting a Heatsink SDD rather than a SSD without a Heatsink ??? Most enclosures that hold SSD have heatsink stickers, so what is the real benefit ?? THANKS for your amazing/incredible videos...😁
I have this same question. The Samsung Pro 980 gives you the option of buying one with or without a heat sink. And oddly enough, WITH the heat sink is cheaper! but is the fit, the same.
A LOT OF GREAT INFO. Thank You so much. I am going to be setting up a new MacMini when it gets here and using an internal storage upgrade so some kind. So many of them 🤷🏼♂
Curious - do you have a video on how to use this external SSD with redundancy (aka: backup of the external SSD)? If not, what would you suggest for doing backups of the external SSD? Keep the info coming 👍Very useful for all mac users.
I don't have enough experience working with mac . I'm a guitarist and i have few opportunities to work in some music videos and scoring for short films. My budget support onlv for a 256gb air m1,but its not enough for kontakt libraries, banks, presets and so on. My question is ,is it possible to use an external ssd while im recording and producing music .
I am a little confused and concerned about the comments made about the T2 chip and what happens if the internal SSD fails. Does this mean that you cannot create an external SSD boot drive and keep all the user accounts, libraries, system apps, etc on a larger (and cheaper) external SSD? I am assuming you can do this, and as long as there is no issues with the internal SSD, you can still boot to an external SDD, correct? It is only if the internal SSD fails in a manner that the T2 chip cannot do its thing that we would not be able to boot from the external SSD. Do I have this all correct?
I thinkn the bios/GUID is built ON TO he internal SSD/Nand for the T2 chips...so NO if the SSD fails you can't boot from any drive! APPLE NEEDS TO BE SUED A LONG TIME AGO FOR MAKING THESE COMPUTER NOT FIXABLE THEY ARE DOING THIS ALL ON PURPOSE....CORPORATE GREED! F U TIM COOK!
I've got an Intel 27' iMac, and have attached a samsung drive to hold Time Machine. If I use a 3 C connection, can I just put an adapter on the USB2. My Thunderbolt is hosting in a hub a Windows SSD as well as the Time Machine. Your mention of USVB 4 is the first I've heard of such a thing, all of this an indication of my (non) level. What is enticing, however, where I don't completely trust Time Machine, is the idea of something to park mothball files (former banks etc.) Your presentation is very good, in any case.
Had a Mac for more than 10 years now I think. For some reason I always thought external SSD’s are just for extra storage. Now that I know I can run demanding apps on there, I just got the enclosure and NVMe you recommended and they should be here tomorrow! Thanks! Can’t wait to give my 2019 iMac a boost 😂. One day I’ll switch to a Mac with an M chip but not today 😆
Thanks for the effort you put into this. I would love to see you show this as a simulated new buyer choice comparison. Like buying a new M4 macbook when they release with just 1TB of internal and adding 3TB external storage (or approximately) vs just buying one with 4TB all internal. How much $ can you save and what will performance be like comparing normal use tasks like gaming, editing or moving 5GB of data.

Thanks for this video, it solved my problem with buying enclosure 💪🏻
I have came back to this video 3 times for guidance thank you
Mac user with a Sony TV, gotta have my exFAT for video storage. I don't waste my time worrying about sticks and cases to pinch a penny and have to worry about what works with what. I buy a complete solution: Sandisk, Lacie, Samsung. When you use the correct spec cable, it's a thing of beauty how fast terabytes transfer. Good video!
In Germany all cost atlest doubble that :(
SSD is not bread or brod, u don’t buy it every day. So 50 or 100 doesn’t really matter
@@veryrandomstuff4240 To someone whit money yes. But there are alot of people that aren't that well off like you
@@LemonsRageeverything costs so much here in Germany, I bought a T7 shield 2TB for 170€ thats 186$
@bonyfisch
That's the EU for you 😆
That's why we voted for Brexit (just waiting for the hatestorm now 😜).
Im from amsterdam, I was about to say the same thing😂 150 overhere for a good 1TB
Very excellent summary. To the point and useful.
Kyle...thank you for this incredibly detailed explanation of so many things I've wondered about.
Exactly what I needed to hear, Kyle. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. 👍
The internal upgrades are worth it imo
The internal drives with proper enclosure costs almost the same, but is external and doesn’t have the advantages of an internal drive
Why not both 😂😂😂
How were you able to see the temperature of your drive at 6:00? I have the same Acasis case and WD drive... Couldn't find these temps on System Report
Oh my thank you
formatted the external hard disk (not compatible) 4 months.... Now smooth transition... Thank you wizard.
This was so helpful! I'm not the biggest tech person so I usually have trouble understanding these kind of things but you explained it all so well! Thank you
Very informative, especially coming from windows systems. It’s a shame Apple doesn’t fit larger drives for the price.
Really informative and timely (just bought a new M2). Thanks for this mate.
I have a Samsung T7 Shield, and I only use it with Macs. Should I reformat it to APFS?
Hi Kyle! Fresh new subscriber here, just found your channel. Love, that you provide compressed info from someone who seems to know what he's talking about. ;-) Don't know, if you read this, but I'll give it a try:
----
After almost 15 (!) years on my early 2009 iMac I finally upgraded to a mid tier 2023 M3 iMac and I'm just loving it.
Leave it plugged in. Multiple drives have been the standard since the dawn of editing video on hard drives….
Very helpful content. Got me to order the very cute Mac mini and subscribe to the channel. I’ll be going through the rest of your content so I can get up to speed on using and configuring my new tech. Will be interesting learning a Mac after decades of using Windows.
You've just saved me so much research time. thank you!
Top notch, helpful review. Head and shoulders above most of what I find on UA-cam. Thanks!
Great video. I recently bought an M4 Mac Mini base (out of curiosity because I am a PC user forever). The only thing missing that I'd like to know is how do you change backups/documents etc to external drive so as to leave the meager SSD inside the Macs reserved only for programs.
I have a 256G m1 iMac I put the system and storage on a 2TB 990pro .. Acasis external enclosure
Hello, what type of external drive and capacity should I get to use the Time Machine feature? Is it worth it? Or nah?
I use the same acasis enclosure on my macbook pro m1 pro 16 inch for a bootable macOS just to save my internal ssd from tbw wearout.. the internal ssd speed in my macbook pro is faster than the acasis but it is fast enough to use smoothly because it is as fast as the internal ssd of the macbook air m1..
I boot my M1 Mac mini from an external NVMe all the time. I don’t use the built in 256GB drive at all.
@cyberlizardcouk
I've seen that recommended. How do you do that mate?
@@philmckenna5709 absolutely brilliant. There is no real performance hit that you’d notice and you can scale the storage as you deem necessary. Of course it takes up a Thunderbolt port but I use a dock anyway even for the monitor cable. Either way it’s a lot cheaper than buying a Mac Studio.
Totally awesome video....great levels of details for people like me to clear up the confusion! Thank you so much!!
So glad I saw this. I was just about to buy that SanDisk Pro but I went with the Samsung
i got the 980 pro nvme with a case, 200 dollars in total, but it is as fast as the M2 chipi!! my internal ssd is saved for years to come, been going strong for a year
OMG. Just what I needed. a HUGE thanks, Kyle!
these thunderbold enclosures are at similar price as QLC SSD 4TB drives.. understand these are for people that really need 3000MBps speeds.
So many of them 🤷🏼♂
finally!! a video that clears up all of the things that i was confused about, thank you
Curious - do you have a video on how to use this external SSD with redundancy (aka: backup of the external SSD)? If not, what would you suggest for doing backups of the external SSD? Keep the info coming 👍Very useful for all mac users.
I don't have enough experience working with mac . I'm a guitarist and i have few opportunities to work in some music videos and scoring for short films. My budget support onlv for a 256gb air m1,but its not enough for kontakt libraries, banks, presets and so on.
My question is ,is it possible to use an external ssd while im recording and producing music .
Exactly what I needed - thanks for sharing
F U TIM COOK!
can i run mac os apps directly on the external ssd drive or just the the external ssd drive for mass storage only ?!
Great content. Thanks very much. Question: at the 11:47 mark, what is the software you are using to view disk health?
clean my mac x
Had a Mac for more than 10 years now I think. For some reason I always thought external SSD’s are just for extra storage. Now that I know I can run demanding apps on there, I just got the enclosure and NVMe you recommended and they should be here tomorrow! Thanks! Can’t wait to give my 2019 iMac a boost 😂. One day I’ll switch to a Mac with an M chip but not today 😆
All in all, what would you recommend for a 4TB for the new M3 iMac. I'm planning to use it for video editing. Thanks
Thoughts on a RAID system using SSDs? As a photographer I'm trying to figure out the best way to store and backup all of my photos.
I have a separate NAS system for long term storage that just uses regular HDDs
consider a nas
Thanks for the effort you put into this. I would love to see you show this as a simulated new buyer choice comparison. Like buying a new M4 macbook when they release with just 1TB of internal and adding 3TB external storage (or approximately) vs just buying one with 4TB all internal. How much $ can you save and what will performance be like comparing normal use tasks like gaming, editing or moving 5GB of data.
Little question. How should i use the ssd ? Should i put my programs on it ? Just the documents ? But everything is already on my icloud…
Brillaine and useful - many thanks
How exactly are you organizing your files? System files and Apps on the computer’s storage and all data on the external? Show us the workflow.
Great video. Do these drive work on older iMac 2017 i5? Thanks
