If you do this do let us know what ssd you got..
The list of compatible SSDs available on the Internet is a little outdated...
I installed HP SSD FX900 Pro (Innogrit IG5236 controller - PCIe 4.0, NVMe 1.4) on Mac mini 2014, no issues so far. Perhaps it will work on MacBook too.
Samsung 990 EVO worked on MBPR 15" mid 2014. Although I had to use CCC instead of Disk Utility as DU cloning failed every time I tried. Not sure why.
Corsair gen 3

One of the most informative and thorough upgrade videos I’ve seen in a long time, I’m very impressed with your description and the technical details provided.
Keep up the good work 🙏
Thanks for the kind words ..
Excellent guide. I really appreciate the help and detail in which you go through this Step by step process. You’ve given my 2013 MBP new life 😊
Glad it helped!
Thanks for this guide. I follow the steps exactly and everything in perfect order now!
Glad it helped!
Thank you so much!!!! This was so easy and helped along the way 🎉
Glad it helped!
Excellent video, well described, worked first time, thank you.
welcome
You are the best step by step guided us thanks bro
No problem 👍
Thank you for the brilliant in depth tutorial from start to finish.
I couldn’t clone my ssd using disc utility as I was getting errors but I used Carbon Copy Cloner instead
welcome ...glad CCC worked for you ..
Which M.2 drive did you use?
@@townley1017 SK Hynix Gold P31
What a fantastic video, thank you sir for so much effort, thank you
You are most welcome
Very good tutorial! I am trying to replace a 128GB SSD in my macbook pro early 2015. I got an Intel 660p, will post if it works or not. For now retoring image failed, I am trying again.
Hi @Munchy
I like your video, Can you suggest the best ssd for Macbook Air early 2015 (speed is my priority, i can manage storage)😊😊
Hi. Thanks so much for this video. I have a question regarding using the M.2 NVME SSDs listed. Can you instead use these newer upgrade SSDs such as the OWC 1.0TB Aura Pro X2 (OWCS3DAPT4MB10K) for Mac or the LEVEN JPMS600-1TB for Mac which already has the proprietary Apple pin/connector compatible with MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013 - Mid 2015)? The model I just received from a client to upgrade is the MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015). Would you recommend upgrading using any of these drives?
yes you can use those as well ....just that they are expensive and the m.2 are better bang for your buck ..
@@munchy_cool - Thank you so much for the advice. I am just trying to figure out if I should save a little with a SSD + adapter or less work with the single SSD. Appreciate it. Thanks.
Hi! Thanx for a great upgrade video! Question:I have a Macbook Air 2013, If I after the SSD-upgrade install Sonoma with Open Core Patcher, will it work or will the boot rom be changed or destroyed?
it will work ..i am running ventura on my 2015 mbp with oclp and the 2tb used in the video :)
Thanx for a quick reply 👍@@munchy_cool
I have an early 2015 13" Retina Macbook Pro running the latest version of OS Monterey (12.6.3). It has the original 128gb Apple SSD. Do I need to get a bigger Apple SSD before I can install an M.2 NVME SSD?
no
Macbook air early 2015 supports Crucial 1tb p3 nvme ssd?
Hi. Watched the video and left a like. I'm about to do this. Macbook Air late 2013 6,1. Using Intel 665p 1TB and the Sintech short adapter. Currently on Ventura via OCLP...Will I run into any issues you think? Thanks!
i hope not ..and thanks for the like
@@munchy_cool it worked, but it was an adventure. So it did everything right except actually install a boot loader on my Intel 665p. Like it allocated a spot for it, but didn’t install it and that had me confused for most of the day troubleshooting until I manually added a format, a Drive section for that partition, and then I was able to boot without the USB and it works
hi good info here, just wanted to ask what would happen if you skip the formatting and the cloning steps and just replace your ssd?
how are you going to boot if you have no OS installed?
Thanks for this great video! I just installed a SAMSUNG 980 PRO 2TB SSD on my Mid 2015 MAcBook Pro. It runs great, but i was wondering if we need to add a thermal pad to prevent it from overheating.
i have been using my sabrent without one and no overheating till date
@@munchy_cool thanks for your quick response!
i have an early 2015 macbook pro retina 13''....i bought the samsung 990 nvme ssd pro - I installed Mojave on it and everyworks fine...except write/read numbers are very low - i get 1700 on both while this SSD should be around 7000
your mac has pcie 2.0 ..i think those numbers are fine ...
after recovering the internal ssd onto external SSD, I restarted and pressed option. selected the external SSD to boot. After half loading, it got stuck and the blue led on external SSD stoped. I am not able to boot from external SSD. I am using the 2TB skhynix p31 gold
Mine is a late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" i7 2.33GHz Bug Sur 11.7.10 16GB Ram 512GB SSD, was hoping to change SSD to EVO 980 2TB using Sintech adapter and then use OpenCore Legacy to run the most current MacOS. Is this still possible if I upgrade the SSD?
Based off my research decided to not use sintech adapter. Instead found Apple SSD 1TB for good price and low MTH that I will instead use the apple SSD.
Hey i have a Macbook Pro Mid-2015, using Catalina. I want to replace the SSD but also i want to replace the HDD. I think we have the exact same model of Macbook, is the HDD replaceable for example with a Samsung Sata 2.5" SSD? Or is it soldered? Thank you in advance.
it only has a ssd which can be replaced with a nvme ssd ..it does not have a hdd
@@munchy_cool Wasnt the mid-2015 Macbook Pro equipped with both an ssd with max 512GB and an optional HDD with 1 or 2 TB?
Hello and congratulations for this perfect guide.
It worked, however my MBP 13" 2015 with samsung 980 500GB with nfhk n941a adapter gets very low read/write numbers - I get 700-800 on both (exactly like original 128 apple ssd). Any ideas? Thanks!
check the lanes if you are at 4 lanes or not
@@munchy_cool thanks, and yes it's 4line (x4)
Question, my old SSD was so corrupted, I had to factory reset, and therefore NO MACOS was installed, even catalina. So I can't load High Sierra at least for the new SSD to be recognized even though it has been formatted and cloned as you instructed. What do I do in this scenario?
Can this work for macbook pro early 2015 13inch i7? Thinking to get a samsung evo 970 plus ssd any suggestion?
yes it will and as for ssd best options are in the video ....rest try at your own risk
@@munchy_cool I check mac rumors but I think I love Samsung going for 970 plus or 980 pro
I have a 2015 15" MacBook Pro with a 512GB SSD. I want to upgrade to a Samsung 4tb SSD - The question is: If I upgrade to the 990 Pro, will the drive operate at maximum performance, or will the limitations of the 2015 MacBook Pro throttle it's performance? If so, what would be the best drive for me to get for that computer, that would not be throttled by the limitations of the computer? A 980 Pro...? A 970 Pro...?
If I stick the cooling sticker on the NVME, how can I then remove it before installing it inside the mac book pro? Is there a safe way to remove it? I don't want the adhesive to ruin the NVME.
try without peeling the adhesive layer and see if the clone works ..else rubbing alcohol is your bff
@@munchy_cool Thanks, munchy!
I did the very same project, the same adapter, but a Samsung Nvme 512, wich is 3000MB/s R-W, with the older original PCIe Apple SSD 128GB I had a speed with Blackmagic 500/600MB/s R-W, I hoped the upgrade will increase the speed, BUT I STILL HAVE THE SAME SPEED, do I need to do something else???
what macbook, year and model?
It is necessary to check the speed of the PCIe interface (Link Width and Link Speed). Maybe the adapter is defective.
Why cant i just install the m.2 ssd with adapter and use command + r, format and install macOS on the new ssd trough internet? Why do i need to clone the old ssd?
Hello I installed the same NVME Ssd in the video with an adapter into my MacBook Air 2013 but the drive never showed up in the disk utility, it’s as if the computer isn’t reading the ssd at all. But when I plugged it in with an external reader the drive was visible on the computer. Why is the Nvme not showing up when it’s installed internally? Shouldn’t it at least show a hard drive is there even if there’s no software on it?
check the adapter
@@munchy_cool thanks, I figured it might it. I ordered a different one. Will check and see
sometimes the adapter shorts when it touches the housing of the mac ..bottom cover ..try some kaptom tape as well ..
@@munchy_cool Oh wow that’s probably the reason. I’m Glad it’s not the ssd. Thank you for your answer, I believe you’re right
Hi would this drive PNY CS1030 M.2 NVMe SSD work on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13.
no idea ..i have mentioned the ones which work for sure in the description
@@munchy_cool it works :) So far so good.
@@munchy_cool I can confirm on my 13 early 2015 model the drive does work and so do the sleep and wake options :) I bought the m.2 adapter from your guide.
@@makaveli559m nice ..thx for letting me know
Will this process work on a early 2015 retina?
yes,,i did it on 2015 15 inch
hey! so basically i've bought an mid 2013 11" macbook air without an original apple ssd. i've installed catalina on my external usb ssd since disk utility nor diskutil list in terminal show my new nvme ssd drive and bootrom says 120.0.0.0.0
currently downloading big sur update still on that external ssd, i hope that fixes my issue, but if not what should i do then?
you will have to get an original Apple ssd from ebay, and install macos on that..update it to the bootrom needed for nvme to work and then go from there ...
@@munchy_cool so there is no workaround to update bootrom without an apple original ssd? i've seen some people just install macos on an external drive and bootrom updated automatically. for me after installing big sur update nothing has changed, still the same bootrom version, i will try internet recovery now and hope it does work this time.
iirc, original apple ssd needs to be installed..
@@munchy_cool hey, ive got apple original ssd now and did the update. everything has updated correctly, but my nvme ssd still isnt detected by my macbook. what could be the problem here?
@@wannakms is the ssd being detected with an external ssd enclosure? the internal adapter could be bad ..
Hi, I am using 2015r mbp 15” with the sk Hynix gold but on restore (20:08) I am getting operation failed.
It is saying failed to create source stream for replication and volume replication failed- invalid argument error 22.
Any help would be great 👍cheers
Apple's clone utility is super finicky ..i am not sure whats causing that since I didnt face that issue ...I would recommend trying again, and if it doesnt work then try a fresh install on the new drive ..
@@munchy_cool cheers mate, a fresh install of the OS without my data you mean?
yeah .lets just try that on the new disk please@@townley1017
@@munchy_cool Thanks munchy, as you can probably tell I'm a complete novice. So do I need to create a partition on the new drive in the enclosure and install the OS on it? Then I can just swap the ssd with the original and it'll boot?
Without the enclosure can i remove my MacBook internal ssd
Run the mac from an other external ssd
Put the nvme internally and clone it from the external that im running the macos ?
Or it is a must that i shall clone nvme from the internal mac ssd?
no idea ....never tried that ..sorry
i followed this guide sort of but i just went straight to an usb oclp sonoma that i made and wiped the nvme drive and installed the drive with the adapter and instaled sonoma oclp direct and im not getting your speed on the same machine. i had 700mbs to 1300mbs is this normal? i see your speeds are much hioger and we have the exact same machine?

My Mac keeped restarting after replacing the SSD. For one week it was OK, it worked. But now it freezed, restarted multiple times and now shows only "file icon". After forced restart, it turned on, allow me to log in but doesn't respond.
Any ideas?
what ssd adapter are you using? try putting a piece of tape on the metal parts of the adapter facing the bottom lid, they might be shorting out
@@munchy_cool sintech short adapter + Samsung 980 SSD. I will try, thanks :)
I upgraded my macbook air 2015 ssd to Kingspec NX 512GB Nvme PCI e v3.0. but unfortunately, I am only getting read/write around 1400-1500. Is that normal? By the way I am using also an adapter.
Link Width is 4x
Samsung 128GB Read 1638MB Write 732
Kingspec 512GB Read 1173MB Write 1032

I figured it out. I forgot I had FileVault encryption turned on so it wouldn’t copy data. Decrypted via FileVault and redid the clone and works like a charm. Thanks again

I installed a new 512g Sabrent SSD using the process outlined. Hardest part was removing the T5 screw holding in the old SSD in place - I had the wrong screwdriver. Otherwise, everything worked exactly as you outlined. During the first startup the apple logo appeared twice. After that the startup was as usual.
