I cannot believe that I actually made this pattern, the short version with short puffy sleeves. It was even purple. Around about 1974 or thereabouts. I love that you are inspiring your followers to look at vintage patterns and adapt them to suit. It saves so much money and inspires their creativity.
I can remember being in sewing class when I was a teen sewing some of these fashions. I always loved patterns. You bring back that young lady in me who sewed from daylight to dawn. My Grandmother made the best cozy PJ's for us Granddaughter's from just scaps but they were the best....what I wouldn't do to step back in time.
The fact that you still search how to do certain things like the pleats is so reassuring, even with all your experience. The online sewing community is such an amazing resource for all sewists ❤
Watching this has just flooded my head with such happy memories. I remember all the dresses I made for myself, such lovely fabrics I was lucky enough to have because mum used to come with and wd frequently buy them for me. Apart from lovely florals one that sticks out in my mind was a lovely soft wool in a heather/ Wysteria colour. It had short puff sleeves, lined with purple and it had an opening in the back with silver buttons... it was short and I wore it with knee high, shiny black boots. I wd say it was 1966 when I started nursing. Thankyou for the memories. Your dress was gorgeous.
The dress came out beautiful with all of the additional touches you've added to it. You're truly an inspiration. Greetings from Davie, Florida, United States
I love that you are able to be like, "oh, I like the way they finished the back of the blouse I'm wearing, so I'll duplicate that in my own dress!" So inspiring!
I've a whole stack of patterns like this in my classroom at school. A relic from the previous teacher. I've never had the urge to use them but this has just inspired me!
I've watched a couple of videos about reading commercial patterns but I still don't know what size to use. It's one of the big roadblocks I have about sewing. The dress is fantastic! Good thing you didn't add the zipper at the beginning. Always go with your gut.
Beautiful dress and I loved the changes you made along the way. So so lovely. Don't you love how women wrote their names on their patterns back in the day and they all have such beautiful cursive writing.
That’s becuz back then we had required penmanship classes, just like home economics where we were taught to sew & cook. Alas ..... now they don’t think social skill classes where you learn to take care of yourself are important, becuz they want to take care of you instead.
This really takes me back to the 70's when I too was making my own cloths. The bane of my life was neatening the seams. Oh how much easier it would have been to have had an overlocker then!!! Interesting how much things have changed in home dressmaking. I used to send a great deal of time marking patterns using tailor tacks (threads) How much easier is it now to have erasable pens? Love the results you have achieved. Keep them coming.👍🏻👍🏻
@Carol Curtis I couldn't agree more! I had a treadle machine so no zig zag to neaten. Since retiring, I've gotten back into sewing and love all the nifty little gadgets and my overlocker!
I just love vintage patterns- and because not as many people sew today, you can really find them for cheap at charity shops, as you know! Also, in Toronto, the Textile Museum of Canada has a sale once a month in their storage space, and they always put out vintage patterns at $1 a piece. I’ve found some amazing vintage Vogues. Lovely job!
My mother made this dress for me when I was in 11th grade! A lovely print, cream floral on teal background; fabric was a soft cotton blend. My dear Mother was a wonderful seamstress.
Hi Janelle , yes we use to call them pin tucks ( pleats) I still do as pleats are usually in skirts or tunics … each to their own really we all talk the same sewing language huh lol , beautiful dress fabric love your choices 🥰🙌🧤👒🐨🦘🇦🇺❣️😉
I think I had that pattern, it looks very familiar...hmmm...neat. I know I had some of the ones you moved from the box. Those were the days! Glad to see someone giving them new life. Blessings.
Your videos are totally engaging. Clear instructions, and the time lapse videos really make it easy to stay interested! Great dress. Even though I am 70(by the way I WORE those dresses in my day) I am inspired to want to sew them again!
Judy, I have been thinking the same except I am wider now and find the vintage patterns don’t fit me anymore. I used to pull them out of the envelope and sew them up, great fit. At 71 I need round back, full bust, sway back, adjustments plus I no longer have a waist. I am shaped like an ice cream cone anymore.
@@suek7086 Well we are not LIKELY as cute as Janelle anymore but I do LOVE the excitement she inspires about sewing our vintage of clothes. And remember--we WERE that cute in our day!!!
I made a similar dress in high school grade 10. I loved the pleats. It was in a pretty burgundy fabric. You are such an inspiration to me. After watching your videos, I immediately want to ignore my house chores and reno work and start sewing. I have a stockpile of patterns and fabric to do something with lol. Keep doing your videos. It's like spending time with a friend in sewing class...I am still friends with 4 women from my high school sewing class and we have the best memories of those days. Take care and stay safe.
I think this is by far the most flattering dress youve ever made for yourself!!! It turned out beautiful. Ive never used a pattern before but love sewing and want to try now. Im a bit nervous
Never thought to iron the pattern pieces before! Game changer aha. This dress turned out so lovely! Feeling very inspired to get behind the sewing machine 😁🧵
What an adorable dress! I think making another one with a final gathered tier at the bottom to make it full length would look soooo cute too! A short dress in this pattern would be absolutely adorable! Maybe another few versions of this dress? Lol! Great pattern!
Thank you for your Block you are the best in your way to show how you sewing tutorial and it's so easy to follow and recreate the things keep going and I love that you take use shopping with you ♥️ you are simply fantastic and amazing 🙋🙋🙋🤗🙃🍀🌹
Going CRAZY trying to find this pattern!! Has anyone ever found anything remotely similar they could recommend? I love watching you Janelle and using your patterns.. so refreshing to have an Aussie guiding me!
I find it hilarious that patterns I was using in the 70's are considered "vintage"! That being said, your choice of pattern and fabric here is spot-on and you did a great job! Congrats!
I cannot believe that you use that pattern. I had that pattern way back when I was pregnant with my second child and made that as a maternity dress I made it as a dress and then as you did I altered it and made just a top and made a skirt to go with the top. I love what you've done with that. I'm hoping I can purchase that pattern, and you're going to offer it. wonderful job. Thank you, so very much😊
It turned out so beautifully! I totally love the vintage patterns. I make them all the time! It’s so amazing but you sew the style of clothes that I love and sew. I’m not young like you but I love your style. I get so many compliments on these clothes! The style is timeless!
Well Done girl, you have done an amazing job, I also had a very similar dress in the mid seventies, it has always been my favourite dress, would love to find a pattern and make it again but it would have to be a couple of sizes up since I am 73 years old now !!
I love your modifications to the pattern. The pintucks really add to the overall look, The addition of a Peter Pan collar could be a way of changing it slightly to use the design again. Inspired by your most recent newsletter, I am currently considering which pieces of my bedlinen to add ruffles or trims to! Thanks for the inspo!
Wow, that dress is actually really lovely. I like how extending the sleeves makes all the shering go across the back at the same(ish) level, it does something good for the eyeline.
I loved your video! I generally enjoy seeing vintage pattern being sewn cause they often include interesting construction details you don’t often see in modern clothing. And then on top of that you modernized it, sign me up for more please! 🙌🙌
There is a black thing behind the shaft of your machine foot, in the pressure foot holder. It fits the guide you usually use for quilting. Perfect for measuring when you can't see the guides on the needle plate.
I definitely agree 💯 better than the ASOS dress !!! Love the tuck detail on the front it's beautiful looks proper vintage 😍 and the pouffy sleeves are to die for 🥺 The bow on the back with the open back look it soooo much better than a zip or a button up 🥰 I'm in love ....if only I had this pattern 😭 xxx

Lucky you u have ur mum to support this
That bow detail was def the right choice !
Couple of tips in regard to the facing -under stitching and ditch stitching will save you having to hand stitch
Looks fabulous on you. Love the shirring and the sleeves and tucks are perfect. Love the back closure.
I adore this dress. Love the pin tuck bodice, shirring waistline & sleeves. And the fabric is perfect. I give you an A+.
Would love a short video of all your vintage sewing patterns 😍
Thank you for showing the whole process! It’s a joy to watch all the details and steps (including the pressing and facing!).
I'm watching this while making your "perfect dress" in a blush colored double cloth. Thanks for being awesome!
Sounds lovely! Thanks so much for watching and sewing along 🧡
This dress is absolute perfection! I love the fabric. So beautiful.
The tucks really make this dress for me. It came out amazing!! 💖💖
The dress came out beautiful with all of the additional touches you've added to it. You're truly an inspiration. Greetings from Davie, Florida, United States
There is no doubt, the three rows of shirring on the sleeves are the perfect addition.
I'm very happy that you stock with 2 rows of shirring. It looks much better than the original.
I love how your pallet has expanded over the last year
The dress is absolutely beautiful! My mum had that pattern when I was a kid!
I love that you are able to be like, "oh, I like the way they finished the back of the blouse I'm wearing, so I'll duplicate that in my own dress!" So inspiring!
That trick with ironing the pattern pieces!! 😱😱😱 GIRL! I can’t wait to use that trick! 🙌🏼
Not a trick - essential. Makes life a heck of a lot easier 👍🏻
That was the first thing I was taught. As Carol said, it’s not a trick - it’s an essential component for correct pattern sizing.
Love the pink pegboard and your thtead holder. Decorative and functional.
I've a whole stack of patterns like this in my classroom at school. A relic from the previous teacher.
I've never had the urge to use them but this has just inspired me!
use them, don't throw them, I so wish I'd kept all my 70s patterns now. I had many similar to this one .
@@Lazydaisy646 I was never going to throw them away. Its just a bit of a hard sell trying to get 14 year olds to get excited about them!

@@bestillandknow9127 yes I recall my Dad telling me penmanship was taught. He had the most beautiful writing.
Teaching a child penmanship instills discipline, attention to detail. What a shame it isn't taught anymore.
Beautiful dress. Looks so lovely on you. I like your touches. Much prettier than the dress that inspired you and the original pattern. Great job.
Yep, absolute dream dress there - I also think it looks much better than the ASOS version. Lovely!
You look amazing in your new dress!!! I love the added bow detail at the back. This was so fun to watch.
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the vid 🧡
It's so gorgeous Janelle💚 you are so clever!
PS I have that fabric too

Me too. Not do much clothing more bags etc.
I always used marking paper and a rotary wheel in the 70's to mark the darts, tucks, etc.
@@wildflowerwind6941 so did I!
I still use tailors tacks! 😀 Far prefer them to erasable pens.
Your 'vintage patterns' made me smile; I saw a pattern in there for a dress I made when I was 16. "Vintage" like fine wine... Cheers!

GORGEOUS
