I love how the whole point about John Green books is how he's able to see teenagers as complex people instead of just grown up children, anyone who was into the rookie/tavi gevinson bubble knows that teenagers do talk like that if they are given the right space for it
As someone who works w teens, I definitely agree but think it’s more of a “giving the right space” for a particular type of teenager in a particular era haha

I honestly think peopl forget how crucial John Green was for the formation of the internet in general like not just how he was such a pillar and creator of Tumblr culture, but one of the firsts to use the internet to democratize (?) education with Crash Course, AND co-founding VIDCON! this man pioneered tumblr and UA-cam and even if the platforms have changed a lot since then, people forget this man was quietly in the forefront of the formation of these platforms into what they were during their biggest most formative years.. idc like give him and hank a medal or smth

Little known fact: the Green brothers were also sort of tangentially involved in the creation of Patreon! Take all of this with a grain of salt because this is from my own memory, but iirc a bit before Patreon was a thing they started a conversation about how online monetization was a broken and talking about how a subscription service would be a great solution. They ended up creating a site called Subbable around the same time Patreon was created (afaik this was mostly an instance of “two people had the same good idea at the same time”) and eventually Subbable got folded into Patreon? So like, they kind of created a small part of Patreon and contributed to the early popularization of the idea. Again take this with a grain of salt, but that’s how I remember it going down.

Yeah as a 31 year old the fact that Hank is somehow "Hank Green the Science Guy from Tiktok" is so weird 😂😅 I also love people randomly being shocked that there are in fact 2 separate Green Brothers.
It used to be "Who the f is Hank?" but now he's probably seen by more younger-younger people than John bc his tiktok is so popular Heard someone describe him as the internet's Tiktok uncle😂
i love turtles all the way down (his newest book) SO much and i genuinely feel so bad for how horribly he was treated on tumblr. i heard him say a few weeks ago that people STILL send him the monologue *dozens of times a week* it sounds like a living hell
I hand painted “Okay? Okay.” With the clouds and everything on my wall. Even took the book to Home Depot to color match the blue for the background. This video took me back 😅
As much as 2014 John Green was an ERA, I am so grateful for modern John Green. His work for tuberculosis research and advocacy has been amazing, and his latest non-fiction work "The anthropocene, Reviewed", is my favourite book ever. The work is so thoughtful and delicate, and it means the world to me. If you liked the mental health storylines in his books you read when you were younger, reading TAR gives brilliant (yet devastating) context as to the impact that those mental illnesses have had on his personal life. Anyways TLDR; John Green is my favourite creative, and I HIGHLY recommend everyone reads the anthropocene reviewed!!!!!!
Paper Towns supremacy! John proposed to me for my husband on the vlogbrothers channel a hundred years ago and I can't believe how much history and lore came before and since.
Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns will always hold a very special place in my heart. The things that those books did to my mentally ill teenage brain need to be studied. I still listen to them sometimes.
As a chronically online girlie myself, did i know all of the lore YES, but did i watch the whole one hour video ALSO YES Thank you for your service bestie!!!
The green brothers and nerdfighteria is such a wonderful part of the internet. Really good video, I wasn't really around on tumblr at the time but I was moving in circles with people that were very active. Rediscovering them in the last couple of years has been some of the best things that I have done.
My now husband and I went to see tfios in theaters together for our 3rd date, and I remember afterwards we had this thing where “Casually is our Always” and we’d just say Casually to each other all the time omfg we were the worst 😂 what a time
I met John Green in person when he ordered a coffee at the cafe I work at! He was so cool and sweet and took a selfie with me. He even offered to hold my phone for it because I was so nervous my hands were shaking 😂
In 2018 to 2020ish, i worked in a restaurant that John Green frequented fairly often. He was super quiet and unassuming. Never would've known who he was if he hadn't been pointed out to me
I remember going through the whole "screaming, crying, throwing up" experience for the very first time. John Green might have actually created one of the rites of passage for the "academic weapon - to mentally unstable" girlies out there
i remember being 16, my mom had just read my journal and i felt like my mind had been violated and the only safe place to vent my trauma was on the last page of my tfios book.
the moment you mentioned zoella on vidcon I SCREAMED because i knew exactly what was coming and somehow that made me feel connected to you on a spiritual level idk those were the good days man
Haven’t watched the video yet but it’s great that you’re helping raise money for Palestinians. A lot of creators try to avoid that kind of stuff because they want to avoid controversy and please everyone so it’s nice to see people with real convictions.
@@spntageous5249I was obsessed with the book as a teen so when my first serious boyfriend at the time broke up with me… I ended up seeing this freaking movie FOUR TIMES in a row !! Sobbed each time like it was the first time 😂
I read 'the fault in our stars' like... 3 or 4 times? And the first time i read it in a day and finished it at like 2am... my mom came into my room to look why I was still awake and saw me CRYING my eyes out😂 she was so scared that something happened this was the start of my John Green Books Binge ❤
8:03 "litfic for teens" is ABSOLUTELY the best way to describe John's novels I think. He's always marketed as romance but that always feels so wrong, and when John talks about his own work and why he writes what he writes he often explains that he wants to make something intellectually challenging and complicated that teens will still easily enjoy and easily find relatable.
A two day migraine 😭 girl I feel you. I also remember dragging my mom to a special Simulcast of the TFiOS movie that had a live John & cast interview after.
I started as an English teacher in 2013 (I’m a school librarian now). In my first year of teaching, my 8th grade students had a classmate dying of cancer, and I had us read The Fault in Our Stars together. It was tremendously helpful to them and, 11 years later, I think is my proudest teaching moment. :)
I made my dad take me to see TFIOS in theatres and he was still crying in the car on the way home after but he was PISSED about it and talking about how much he hates John green for like the entire ride, then later I heard him on the phone talking to his friend about it he was not pleased
I was feeling old for a moment because you read these as a pre-teen and I read them as a teen. Then I remembered that we used to have a delay in the third world. You're not allowed to make me feel old.
The fact that John Green was popping in my UA-cam shorts feed all the time and I only recently discovered it was him! I loved fault in our stars, hated looking for Alaska 😅
without fail, every time the video gets to the part you included in the intro, i go absolutely insane. it's like when they say the name of the movie in the movie
Looking for alaska was a gnarly experience for me as a teenage boy. This character was developing a connection w a girl for the first time in his life just like I was, but she was very suddenly taken away halfway through the story. I don’t remember if it was suicide or an accident, but the coming of age story is suddenly cut short when she dies and the rest of the book is our protagonist marinating in the loss, unsure how to move forward. John Green must’ve really liked Bridge to Terabithia. I’m almost 30 and still haven’t had to confront something that tragic, I can’t imagine if it was my high school girlfriend when we were 18.
Carley! I'm also a John Green stan and was putting off reading Anthropocene Reviewed. I finally got around to it and I'm only halfway through but I feel it has changed my life. I couldn't recommend it enough. The audiobook is also amazing and he reads it himself and it has a few extra essays and special tidbits
I grew up in Germany and I distinctly remember reading the translated version of "the fault in our stars" in my sixth grade German class in like 2013 my German teacher was this young twenty something woman who wore an "okay? okay" t-shirt on the day we wrote a test on the book, which is something that entirely slipped my mind up until now
John Green was so important to my adolescence and his books are so genuinely good!! I very unironically think that Looking for Alaska is a classic of our generation and should be read in high school English classes
This healed my inner adolescence. Lately I’ve been looking back at my teenage self and cringing so hard at all the things I was into, including John Green, who I was a massive fan of. This reminded me how amazing and impactful his work is and there is nothing to be ashamed of ❤.
The way the memory of jim chapman accidentally outing the relationship of Zoella and Alfie snapped to the forefront of my frontal lobe so quick, what a time
i love you so much because you’re one of the only people i know who understands this tumblr 2010-2014 lore that i miss so much on a daily basis thank you for your work please keep talking about this
I remember being number TWELVE on the waitlist to check out TFIOS from my junior high library, the absolute anticipation I was gripped by was otherworldly
“i am the person today because i read john green books as a child” EXACTLY. i remember reading will grayson x2 in 2022 during 7th grade and absolutely adoring that book. i could relate to the characters and i loved the writing styles. the writing in will #2’s chapters reminded me of how i used to write and i loved that. the book really helped me, especially since i read it in such a hard time in my life (first year of school in a few years, i was in a bad relationship, etc.) and it really inspired me to become a writer. ive read it about 3 times now, and ive read a few other john green books, but no other book has impacted me as much as will grayson x2 id also like to mention that tfios is almost always checked out at my schools library. the kids are alright.
Put with on when me and my dad were having breakfast cause I knew he really like John green and was on tumblr at this time and he excitedly told me about his books. He told me about the first time he read ‘the fault in our stars’ he was on a road trip and how he was *sobbing* in the car and his friend had to ask him if he was ok 😭. “She is trying to connect you with me on literature scene. :)” was what my dad said. And it was a wonderful time bonding with my dad so thank you for this Carly. You’re amazing and this video was awesome. ❤
I love John Green's books, personally I dont remember being a big fan of the fault in our stars, but I loved Turtles all the way down and Loking for Alaska so much
i absolutely love youtube videos that just send me directly back to the 2012 hellscape of being a girl on tumblr like that is where i belong in my basement with an unreasonable amount of internet freedom
I've been in the vlogbrothers community since 2008 - I'm in the intro of the video but with how INTO the community I was (am?), I can't imagine learning too much new information... but I feel like this topic is so catered to me that I had to immediately click anyway. Thank you for your service Carley 🙏
@@uncarleyby the way, I think you would really enjoy the essay on sunsets in The Anthropocene Reviewed. It talks about this idea of using irony as a shield and how John has come to embrace his own earnestness.
I'm a little younger than the Tumblr generation, but ever since I read "The Fault In Our Stars" a couple years ago, I have felt so seen. It's not like I have cancer but I've revisited the book time and time again in my ongoing journey to recovery from serious mental illnesses that were life-threatening. @@uncarley awww ty, im happy to have free time and i burst out laughing at you comment of “cancel elgort” you’re the bestttt😭😭😭
People do be dyin of poverty…sending thots and prayers😵
@@GoodnessKnowsProductions aww thank you for your concerns but im fine actually, im lucky to have my family and a house over my head and have the option to quit my job when most people in the war zones do not have what I have 😢
Yeah as a 31 year old the fact that Hank is somehow "Hank Green the Science Guy from Tiktok" is so weird 😂😅 I also love people randomly being shocked that there are in fact 2 separate Green Brothers.
It used to be "Who the f is Hank?" but now he's probably seen by more younger-younger people than John bc his tiktok is so popular
Heard someone describe him as the internet's Tiktok uncle😂
and you're REALLY old if u remember the "Third Green Brother" lore...
wowwwww i had no idea he's a Hank Greens brotherrrrr
i love turtles all the way down (his newest book) SO much and i genuinely feel so bad for how horribly he was treated on tumblr. i heard him say a few weeks ago that people STILL send him the monologue *dozens of times a week* it sounds like a living hell
I love the new movie (on Max) so much!
I mean technically it isn’t his newest book his newest book is the anthropacine reviewed
I hand painted “Okay? Okay.” With the clouds and everything on my wall. Even took the book to Home Depot to color match the blue for the background. This video took me back 😅
WHY DID I WANT THE CLOUDS AS A TATTOO
I remember sitting next to a girl in my history class sophomore year, with the clouds painted over her backpack.
I actually painted a white t-shirt like that to watch the movie in theaters lol what a time
you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me but carley did and is doing everything for us girlies ✨ mother behaviour
“has put the killing thing between its minion lips but doesn’t give it the power to do its minion killing” is an insane sentence
"things felt possible" is such an accurate assessment of the 2010s mindset
Paper Towns supremacy! John proposed to me for my husband on the vlogbrothers channel a hundred years ago and I can't believe how much history and lore came before and since.
wow that's you?! That is such a cute video, congratulations on having the best proposal ever!
Yessss paper towns!!!!!
Ahh that video was so cute!! I hope you guys are doing wonderfully these days ❤️
Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns will always hold a very special place in my heart. The things that those books did to my mentally ill teenage brain need to be studied. I still listen to them sometimes.
These are my top two favorites too! Paper Towns is so underrated.
As a chronically online girlie myself, did i know all of the lore YES, but did i watch the whole one hour video ALSO YES
Thank you for your service bestie!!!
I was walking through Amsterdam with friends and was hit by the sudden urge to spout about TFIOS (the Tumblr ghost overcame me)
The green brothers and nerdfighteria is such a wonderful part of the internet. Really good video, I wasn't really around on tumblr at the time but I was moving in circles with people that were very active. Rediscovering them in the last couple of years has been some of the best things that I have done.
I am glad that Nerdfighteria is still there, even if I am more likely to dip in and out now, rather than being glued to it.
My now husband and I went to see tfios in theaters together for our 3rd date, and I remember afterwards we had this thing where “Casually is our Always” and we’d just say Casually to each other all the time omfg we were the worst 😂 what a time
THIS like- Carley is just like other girls, and her videos heal me so much
omg such a compliment
tuberculosis ALWAYS enters the chat. that is one of the many things you learn from being tuned in to vlogbrothers since the ripe age of 12
As someone who never had tumblr (or even a phone, thanks mom and dad) at that time, I love living vicariously through your memories 🤩
happy to educate!
I met John Green in person when he ordered a coffee at the cafe I work at! He was so cool and sweet and took a selfie with me. He even offered to hold my phone for it because I was so nervous my hands were shaking 😂
John and Hank are both so lovely and kind in person!
2014 was a fever dream
so true
In 2018 to 2020ish, i worked in a restaurant that John Green frequented fairly often. He was super quiet and unassuming. Never would've known who he was if he hadn't been pointed out to me
A zaddy spotted in the wild, just existing in the Zen of His Zaddiness.
I remember going through the whole "screaming, crying, throwing up" experience for the very first time. John Green might have actually created one of the rites of passage for the "academic weapon - to mentally unstable" girlies out there
Reading "Looking For Alaska" rocked my world in summer 2012.
i remember being 16, my mom had just read my journal and i felt like my mind had been violated and the only safe place to vent my trauma was on the last page of my tfios book.
will grayson will grayson is actually such a deep cut for me. i haven’t thought about that book in YEARSSSS
carley baby you always know when we are having a rough day to make it better 🗣️
yess happy to help!
carley pleeasseee do a video on the cole sprouse social experiment... the people have to Know
OMG yes
Cole Sprouse’s social experiment inflicts psychic damage, and it’s always super effective.
Yessss pls 😭😭😭
bro i was never around for the john green era, i just recently read the fault in our stars
omg welcome
the moment you mentioned zoella on vidcon I SCREAMED because i knew exactly what was coming and somehow that made me feel connected to you on a spiritual level idk those were the good days man
Haven’t watched the video yet but it’s great that you’re helping raise money for Palestinians. A lot of creators try to avoid that kind of stuff because they want to avoid controversy and please everyone so it’s nice to see people with real convictions.
of course! thank you for saying this!
The reasoning behind the name ‘turtles all the way down’ is genuinely insane and will forever be ingrained into my brain
Tell my why 12 yo me would literally read this until 3am crying throwing up
same bestie
SAME. I was 13 reading tfios and my mom actually took the book away from me for like a week because it was making me too sad lmao
I would read his books In A Day
@@spntageous5249I was obsessed with the book as a teen so when my first serious boyfriend at the time broke up with me… I ended up seeing this freaking movie FOUR TIMES in a row !! Sobbed each time like it was the first time 😂
You saying “in that moment I felt infinite” reminded me that THATS why I got an infinity symbol tattoo as an 18 year old. I had completely forgotten
I read 'the fault in our stars' like... 3 or 4 times?
And the first time i read it in a day and finished it at like 2am... my mom came into my room to look why I was still awake and saw me CRYING my eyes out😂 she was so scared that something happened
this was the start of my John Green Books Binge ❤
The pipeline from John Green fan to Sally Rooney fan is so real tbh
Babe wake up, new Carley deep dive video on a niche(??) internet thing just dropped
yesss
8:03 "litfic for teens" is ABSOLUTELY the best way to describe John's novels I think. He's always marketed as romance but that always feels so wrong, and when John talks about his own work and why he writes what he writes he often explains that he wants to make something intellectually challenging and complicated that teens will still easily enjoy and easily find relatable.
A two day migraine 😭 girl I feel you. I also remember dragging my mom to a special Simulcast of the TFiOS movie that had a live John & cast interview after.
hahaha amazing
I started as an English teacher in 2013 (I’m a school librarian now). In my first year of teaching, my 8th grade students had a classmate dying of cancer, and I had us read The Fault in Our Stars together. It was tremendously helpful to them and, 11 years later, I think is my proudest teaching moment. :)
oh gawd the fact that I am turning 21 tomorrow just hit me by the title of this video 😭
bro i know
happy almost birthday!
@@LW-ng1fl thankyou 🥹
@UTTP-142 you 🤭
Omg same but I'm turning 20 😭😭
I just found john green back on tumblr yesterday this couldnt have been better timed
he's returned!
@@uncarley I don't know what you're talking about, all I found was an Unpaid Intern selling coffee for charity.
same!
I made my dad take me to see TFIOS in theatres and he was still crying in the car on the way home after but he was PISSED about it and talking about how much he hates John green for like the entire ride, then later I heard him on the phone talking to his friend about it he was not pleased
As a mom in the south, I love the way you say mama. It’s full of endearment haha
yess! definitely!
'Its only before TFIOS and after TFIOS' sooooo trueeee
Carley: fishingboatproceeds
Me: war flashbacks
I was feeling old for a moment because you read these as a pre-teen and I read them as a teen. Then I remembered that we used to have a delay in the third world. You're not allowed to make me feel old.
The fact that John Green was popping in my UA-cam shorts feed all the time and I only recently discovered it was him!
I loved fault in our stars, hated looking for Alaska 😅
he's back on the internet in a big way!
@@uncarley never left babyyyyyy 😎😎😎😎
without fail, every time the video gets to the part you included in the intro, i go absolutely insane. it's like when they say the name of the movie in the movie
Thank you for the 'jim revealing zoe and alfie's relationship' sidenote it brought back a bunch of incredible memories from easier times
i was expecting such a different tone to this video and i’m so refreshed to see this version of this video instead. thank you.
"The things that people love about you so quickly become the things that people weaponize against you."
So many good quotes on this video 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Carley! I'm also a John Green stan and was putting off reading Anthropocene Reviewed. I finally got around to it and I'm only halfway through but I feel it has changed my life. I couldn't recommend it enough. The audiobook is also amazing and he reads it himself and it has a few extra essays and special tidbits
the covers remind me VIVIDLY of the ones you could make on wattpad with the limited presets
I grew up in Germany and I distinctly remember reading the translated version of "the fault in our stars" in my sixth grade German class in like 2013
my German teacher was this young twenty something woman who wore an "okay? okay" t-shirt on the day we wrote a test on the book, which is something that entirely slipped my mind up until now
John Green was so important to my adolescence and his books are so genuinely good!!
The psychic shock I experienced when I heard you say “tfios” out loud… immeasurable
“i am the person today because i read john green books as a child” EXACTLY. i remember reading will grayson x2 in 2022 during 7th grade and absolutely adoring that book. i could relate to the characters and i loved the writing styles. the writing in will #2’s chapters reminded me of how i used to write and i loved that. the book really helped me, especially since i read it in such a hard time in my life (first year of school in a few years, i was in a bad relationship, etc.) and it really inspired me to become a writer. ive read it about 3 times now, and ive read a few other john green books, but no other book has impacted me as much as will grayson x2
id also like to mention that tfios is almost always checked out at my schools library. the kids are alright.
I love John Green's books, personally I dont remember being a big fan of the fault in our stars, but I loved Turtles all the way down and Loking for Alaska so much
he's got something for everyone!
A 1-hour video about my entire middle school fascination? Yes, please.
i absolutely love youtube videos that just send me directly back to the 2012 hellscape of being a girl on tumblr like that is where i belong in my basement with an unreasonable amount of internet freedom
I've been in the vlogbrothers community since 2008 - I'm in the intro of the video but with how INTO the community I was (am?), I can't imagine learning too much new information... but I feel like this topic is so catered to me that I had to immediately click anyway. Thank you for your service Carley 🙏
i feel like the tuberculosis arc was because he watched that one episode of house again and went down a rabbit hole
I did not know I needed this. I hope John finds this haha
bro me too i want him to come on my podcast so bad
@@uncarleyby the way, I think you would really enjoy the essay on sunsets in The Anthropocene Reviewed. It talks about this idea of using irony as a shield and how John has come to embrace his own earnestness.
I'm a little younger than the Tumblr generation, but ever since I read "The Fault In Our Stars" a couple years ago, I have felt so seen. It's not like I have cancer but I've revisited the book time and time again in my ongoing journey to recovery from serious mental illnesses that were life-threatening. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video, Carley you are so funny while being analytical at the same time!
Please consider doing a video on Courtney Love lore, it's a great deep dive with many twists and turns. Sending love to anyone reading this~
i also have been hit by a wave of nostalgia seeing the turtles all the way down interviews, like it's been nice seeing john green again in that capacity
