I think a lot of people need to rewatch this fight. Dustin was absolutely not getting "his ass kicked" or "beaten to a pulp". BSD ended up on top solely due to the guillotine attempts. Every time they traded on the feet in round 1, Dustin landed a big shot. Dustin was never in any real danger and it was clear BSD was going to gas out fast. Round 2 came along and Dustin showed us just that... boxing is levels above BSD's and he waited for the shot perfectly. Without pulling guillotine, that first round wouldn't have convinced anyone that "BSD dominated"
Edit: Lets also not forget how biased Rogan's commentary was, which probably also convinced many viewers they were watching a completely different fight
Agreed with your points here but what a lot of people are sleeping on is how ill BSD actually was, he was fighting a nasty Staf on his head and was on Antibiotics which he kept to himself until after the fight.
That's not to take anything away from DP, personally I'm a fan of both guys and I don't think the result would have been any different even if BSD was 100% healthy, DP is a dog in there, he's very experienced and knows how to grit through it.
Shame for BSD but we'll deserved by a true legend like DP. 🙌🏼
I am a die hard Dustin fan. He was never in serious trouble form the striking the BSD landed a couple good elbows and knees. He jumped some of those guillotines because he was going down one way or another in my opinion. I honestly didn't feel like BSD showed any signs of gassing but he didn't have that pace in him for 5 rounds. Also, he put Dustin in several compromising positions which could have led to a finish in terms of submissions. Luckily, Dustin showed his grit and escaped each of them. Man used pin point strikes t put out BSD with very little accumulated damage.
He was getting manhandled, that's for sure. So what? Saint-Dennis is a bigger guy- a mule strong killer. Dustin kept his cool, drained Benoit with those guillotine attempts, and found his opening. Bingo!
BSD's problem is EXACTLY Charles Oliveira's problem: their problem is NOT a problem of lack of skills, heart, or whatever.
Their real problem is, they fight EVERY SINGLE opponent like all of them are EXACTLY the same dude, one both Charles and BSD trained entire camps for.
That is just not how you fight elites/Top 5 guys.
BSD has trained in Judo since he's a small boy; his Judo is ELITE. WTF was he doing Greco Roman against a guy who CONSISTENTLY puts a guillotine on his neck, EVERY TIME he went at Dustin?
And it's not like BSD was 5'7" against Dustin's 5'9" so BSD had to get close to kick. The dude is one of the biggest and tallest guys at 155!, with powerful leg kicks! Why, again, march right into Dustin all the time like that? Because: he/team LACK BRAIN POWER (not a lack of skills).
If BSD fought like Islam, you think Dustin would have been able to consistently out maneuver him?
Dustin IS ELITE in boxing, there is no doubt about it.
If all 155 guys promised not to do take down or BJJ, I put every penny on Dustin. Short of a head kick KO, like what Justin did it to Dustin, VERY FEW would be about to out box Dustin.
Anyway, YOU WILL SEE, when Dustin goes up against a MASTER TACTICIAN like Islam, who happens to also have elite wrestling, elite Judo, elite Muay Thai, and elite BJJ.... and you will see that Dustin really is going to be in trouble. His boxing will still be much superior to whatever Islam has in the stand-up; but the FEAR of being taken down, by a next level wrestler like Islam, WILL make Dustin more hesitant; and THAT will make sure his boxing isn't going to be as deadly as seen against BSD, with BSD being someone who, again, USED ZERO tactics or brains... other than to go SUPER HARD against an opponent, with the hope of overwhelming them ASAP... with NO REGARD to his own long term strategies, much less the strategies and tactics of his OPPONENTS, who also are elite in their own ways, who may be MUCH MORE experienced than he is (like Dustin clearly was/is).
You will LIKELY see a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT and much more TACTICAL and PATIENT the next time BSD fights, regardless whom he fights.
Islam also was gun-ho like that in that first or second fight of his, at the UFC, that got him KOed, exactly like what BSD suffered here. But Islam's KO was 10 times worse, since the guy who KOed him was NOWHERE near the elite level Dustin is (vs. BSD here).
But that one embarrassing loss INSTILLED in Islam, immediately: you MUST use tactics and game planning; running at your opponent at all times, using nothing but force & pressure.... like Charles Oliveira and BSD .... is NEVER a good way, at the Top 5 to championship fights.
JDM, another 27-28 newcomer, OUT MANEUVERED & KOed an equally skilled and crafty veteran Gilbert Burns, ultimately, for using the BRAIN, for using smart TACTICS, for using PATIENCE, and for using TIMING & rhythms...

This event broke the UFC's record for money made at the gate, everyone on UA-cam saying it's one of the best cards of all time, I'm so glad I was able to be there and be a part of it. Couldn't ask for a better first UFC experience

Not at all but they tried to sell this fight like Benoit was better than what he is. I think Damien Mia's stiking is better than Benoit's. Don't get me wrong respect to anyone who steps in there. But that guys striking was bad. He was gassing himself and i said watch as soon as Dustin gets some space he will starch this guy and it was lights out. Islam is gonna retire Dustin and i have great respect for Dustin but he is not getting that belt off Islam.
I didn't forget, but Justin deserves the title fight more than Dustin.

Benoit appeared to have been on antibiotics, from that staph on his head.. he probably knew he had 2 rounds to get the job done. He deserves props for putting up his perfect record while comprimised, and not cancelling the fight

Colby Covington vs Dustin seems a lot less one-sided now. But happy with a title shot too.
Btw that fight was like an 1980s action movie final fight. Like a Van Damme movie, or Die Hard or something. Poirier went through a war and looked like he saw a ghost. Somehow emerged victorious. When you could see BSD slow down you knew it was coming because Poirier has one heck of a gas tank, and power too.
You're basing that on 1 bad performance by Colby vs Edwards. Unless Colby's really washed up (which he's not), he would just grapple Dustin & smother him. Be real!

Everyone was counting Dustin out in that fight because he was fighting such a Savage up-and-coming fighter. But it was just like Raphael versus Justin everybody thought Justin was going to lose but look what happened there. These guys are true Warriors and there's a reason why they are still in the top five and they aren't going to give up their spots that easy. but it was a great fight for Dustin and I think he definitely deserves to be in the title hunt

Fun fight. I like it, but the winner of Gaethje and Max makes way more sense. Makes even more sense than the winner of Charles vs Arman since Mackelchev beat both of those guys already. Gaethje due to the wins, and Max because him vs Khabib needs to be finished. Mackelchev carries on Khabib's legacy.

it’s also a timing thing, most likely neither Gaethje or the winner of Oliveira/Tsarukyan will be ready for July, and if the champ wants to fight in July then Porier would be the perfect options while the other contenders rest and heal up

Islam Makhachev fought three gruelling hard rounds against Arman coming of a staph infection. There were crazy wrestling exchanges and at the end it was Arman who gassed out first and not the other way around. So stop this b.s that antibiotics would empty your gas tank unless if you have a very small gas tank to begin with.

Great podcast, Michael! I totally agree with everything you've stated here. By the way, I think, with your experience and know-how, you'd be a really great MMA coach! Dustin deserves to fight Islam next for the championship. He and Gaethjue are 1-1. It appears that some fight fans are suffering from amnesia and have conveniently forgotten that he KO'd Gaethje at their first meeting. They only remember that he got KO'd via a head-kick at the rematch. This is where the term "selective memory' can be applied. To suggest that Gaethje deserves it more is just BS and has no merit whatsoever! Can't wait to see the contract signed between Islam and The Diamond! Keep up the great work, Michael.

I think your really over exaggerating Dustin getting “beat to a pulp” before he found the knockout. He was losing the fight a little sure but he wasn’t getting dropped rag dolled and ground and pounded to death at all. The way that fight was going DP was going to eventually stop BSD anyways. BSD was going too hard too fast he would have eventually tired and wilted under Poiriers punches had he not got knocked out when he did.
He had 2 staph. I think people really underestimate the consequences of it, like “oh yeah he was on medicine, but bla-bla-bla”. Cutting and having to fight a staph when you’re a rookie going for an elite top 5 fighter is REALLY a big deal.
Also, watch the stats of the fight, I can’t actually believe people who watched it + stats really think DP wasn’t getting rag-dolled before the KO

Good man this Dustin, and great fighter: I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the right skill set/fighting style for Makhachev but that will make him happy and he deserves it. Let's do it, and let's hope it will last longer than against Khabib.

Gaethji on the ground is like a fish out of water, if Islam takes Justin down, which trust me he will, it will be a game over for Justin. But Dustin has shown that he can survive even the worst positions, he got his back taken by Chandler and Benoit but he not only survived that but got back on his feet every time. Islam vs Dustin would be very much like Islam vs Volk 1 but Dustin is bigger than Volk and has knockout power. Lets be real Islam is not khabib and time and time again we saw that fighters with good grappling can get back on feet when taken down by Islam.

The lack of concern for St Denis staff infection surprised me. For him to be aloud to fight meant he would have been on antibiotics. Fighter's know how depleted they get from taking them. However, I didn't hear anybody talking about that? It was a huge factor in Dustin's victory.
