@@FrogsAngelsLondon Hey! Finally getting to the adjustment....what with all the down time and all. I cant find the tool part number for the wooden spoon! =D Hope you and yours are well. Socially distant greetings from SoCal!
You should hold the adjusting screw in place with the allen key while tightening the locking nut, at it can turn the adjusting screw a you tighten the nut and throw the adjustment off. Also you should check and possibly adjust the rocker arm clearance if it is out of spec also. Of you are going to do a job, do it right.
Just saw your video, only a day to late for me. Yesterday I broke one of the bolts in het cilinderhead. It should be tighten to 10Nm instead of 20Nm like a had written (wrong) in the haynes manual. Love your video's! Best regards
The tdcs on the left and right are 180 degrees opposite. When riding a bike, the arrow on the right cylinder chain gear is the right cylinder tdc, and the black plastic tab indicates the tdc of the left cylinder. And it is more accurate to put an 8mm stick in the hole on the back of the right cylinder to fix it accurately.
Just looking at the rocker arms you can tell they do not have the recommended clearing... 0.05mm - 0.40mm, why not adjust them too while you're at it? Apart from that.. cool video, clear enough on what to do... could have done with it 2 years ago when I started tinkering on the 1200GS from 2009. :-)
Hey there , I have the exact same model and color as yours. also 2008.. well, its on 110k Km atm, and I dont know if the clearances has ever been done as I bought it on 106K Km. and no indication on service record. regardless, I think I should do it. what type and magnitude of improvement did you notice after the clearance adjustment? Noticeable decrease in fuel consumption maybe? please do share your thoughts. thanks again, regards
Nice video guy. Did it leak at all as I noticed you didn't replace the seals. I'm curious as I'm at 48k and will be doing this, and was wondering if I should replace the seals. Thank you.
Hello mate. I try to do it myself every year regardless of the miles I do. Typically I do it before a long trip. I perform an oil change at the same time. It is a simple job so it doesn't take that much time to do it and it is free. If you don't want to do it yourself then valve clearences should be checked every 24000miles. Hope it helps!
What's the advantage of removing the secondary plug? I haven't adjusted my valves in a couple of years so I might be remembering incorrectly but, I don't think I did this.
Jeez looks easier my Triumph Trophy the whole frigging bike is literally apart for this and $1400 at the dealership... I took me 4 hours to change the frigging air filter badly designed bike for working on, nice looking with fairing, but man getting it off is a pain in the ass!!!! Awesome video I’m looking for an older GS1200 looks like it’s easier to work on for sure...
Mind you changing a clutch on a boxer engine like this one is a massive pain. You have to dismantle the entire bike. It cost an arm and a leg to fix it at a dealership. Apart from that it is a fairly easy maintenance process. All the best with your new beemer mate. They are great bikes 👍
Hello, I am hoping you can give me some guidance please: I just bought a 2007 GSA. Well maintained bike, runs great. While riding it home...1200 miles, all of a sudden the Rear lights stopped working (Yellow triangle and the word "Lamps R" in the display. Checked the 2 fuses and connectors under the seats, disconnected all the wires from battery and cleaned them....nothing. 2 hrs later all was back to normal. Then "Lamps F" came on....front lights were out, a bit later all lights didn't work and on the display it said: "Lamps". Called the BMW dealer and the mechanic didn't seem to know, other than telling me to do what I did already. I never seen this on any other bike. Where is the CANBus located on this bike? and where should I look to fix this issue.??? Can't afford the dealer prices. I appreciate any help you can give. I am trying to avoid having to take the bike apart completely to find any faulty wires...if this is what causing this issue. Previous owner said he never had this happened before, I trust him as he seems to be an honorable fellow. Thanks so much.

Hello Mate. This is the chart for the recommended oil from the BMW repair manual for that particular model SAE 5W-≥30 - ≥−20 °C, Operation in winter - API SF / ACEA A2, or better SAE 10W-40 - ≥−10 °C, Operation at low temperatures - API SF / ACEA A2, or better Castrol GPS SAE 10W-40 - ≥−20 °C - API SG / JASO MA SAE 15W-≥40 - ≥0 °C - API SF / ACEA A2, or better SAE 20W-≥40 - ≥0 °C - API SF / ACEA A2, or better SAE 5W-≥50 - ≥−20 °C - API SF / ACEA A2, or better SAE 10W-≥50 - ≥−20 ° - API SF / ACEA A2, or better I am planning a trip to Norway this year and the weather can be much cooler so according to the chart 10W-40 is fine. If I was touring to the south of Spain or Africa in the middle of August then I will even use a 20W50. You are right 15W-50 is a good mix for the UK, FR, GER at this time of the year. Hope it does make sence. Cheers
What were you doing when you were fiddling endlessly as you were finding TDC? You would do something in the background that sounded like a ratchet and then you were rattling the rockers with your fingers. I'm not sure what you were doing or why. You had the spoon in the spark plug hole showing the piston fully extended, you were using the wheel to turn the crank, so I'm confused. Are you just being overly meticulous? Appears your method is quite a faff.

why didn't you fill the new filter with oil before refitting it ? that's the usual practice on any engine
Why do you try to adjust both valves? The way I see it, each has it's own bolt and nut, what makes them independent from each other.
True. I was thinking the same.
whats worst, to much clearances or to little? nice film ,thanks
How much mm is it from bottom dead center to top dead center??
Great video..how many kilometers to adjust the valve clearance ? Thinks. V.
Hi I check the valve clearances every 6000m or 10000kms when I do an oil change or once a year. It only takes a couple of hours to do it.
Is there no TDC indicator anywhere on these bikes?
Yes indeed. Please send me an email and I will send you the full instruction. Cheers
