I always hated the clamshell design when it became the norm, hence why I still like my soft shell top opening ones. Just more compact and can lean the top lid against a wall, instead of having to spread out the clam shell on the ground. Thanks for sharing
At 8.5 pounds, it's pretty heavy if you want to keep total weight to about 17 pounds, about the weight some foreign airlines require for carry on. Otherwise, it will get checked...and it's even a bit too large for a lot of European airlines.
Agree, I recently went through checking out every carry on size case to find the perfect one. I essentially wanted one like this (hard with top opening instead of clam) that didn’t weigh so much as the airlines I travel often have 23cm depth and 7kg restrictions. After much research I found one by Delsey that meet these requirements. It’s not the absolute lightest hard shell but not bad given it met all my other requirements. It comes in at around 6.8 pounds. Haven’t used it yet but have done a test pack and am very happy with it.
3.8 kg is incredibly heavy. Many airlines outside the USA have a weight limit of 7 kg for carry-on so this case reduces what you can take with you to 3.2 kg - barely anything. In practice, it’s only any use with airlines with no weight limit for carry-on.
This bag would work well for domestic airlines that aren't strict about carry-on weight. Probably would use a lighter one for European or Asian travel.
I still use my parents' old American Tourister luggage tags from the 60s... back when people used to fly Pan Am 😅. I gave up my old latching lid suitcase when it got too big and heavy for me, or I suppose I should say I got too weak for it!. I miss it. My soft-sided carry-on bag is OK for the amount of use it gets. At least one side is deeper than the other 😊

Although I don't usually see a hardshell with a top open, so in that respect, that is interesting and best of both worlds.

I had a clamshell luggage set, but I got tired of it and gave it to my daughter and bought some soft side top load luggage. As you mention, top load luggage takes up less space in a hotel room, and I can fit bigger items in it better. I like the carry-on in this video, and I would buy it if I was in the market for new luggage.
The cup holder!!! Omg!! As a parent, I have zero spare hands and always need to scoff a coffee so I have a hand free for kids lol. I love the simple stuff
For real! Though I would recommend to those travelling with a stroller to forgo a suitcase this size and instead have one giant checked suitcase for the whole family and only a weekender that can sit on the suitcase and go under the seat and/or a backpack as personal item. Shortage of hands is always an issue.
Regarding unusual baggage colors: A friend of mine has bright purple luggage…she has had her underwear (just her underwear!) gone missing somewhere between her point of origin and destination twice now! I have had good luck with teal, it contrasts with all the black bags, but apparently doesn’t scream “steal my underwear”! 😂😊😂
I won’t buy a hard shell suitcase because they are too heavy and I don’t like spinners because they waste space and don’t handle cobblestones well. I do like the basic design, and as other people have pointed out, almost all luggage used to work like this.
I prefer the clamshell since you won't have to dig deep into the suitcase, but it does take more space though, can be hard in some smaller hotel rooms like in Japan.
@pjwillsr if you have the budget, why not. For myself, I'd rather spend the money on other things because whenever I travel, the hotel is basically just a place to sleep and leave my luggage. I would be out most of the day and sometimes night, so I want to spend the minimum possible without having to stay at a hostel.
Well look at that, were back to using a trunk for travel. I love it. British Airways lost my heirloom carryon with garment bag in the lid. Rest of the bag was similar to this, but soft sided. Thank you so much for this posting this, it solves my search for a replacement.
I’ve been eyeing these for a while. It makes so much more sense. Usually your only choice for hard sides is a clamshell. And there are so many reasons I don’t like them. With this is much easier to access on the go if needed. Easier in a small hotel room, fits on hotel luggage stands, it’s easier to pack bulky items aka souvenirs 😂. I have not run into weight issues yet so I agree the weight might eventually be an issue. I keep hoping other companies start making these and they will get lighter.
Lojel USA sells these. They are a higher end Japanese brand. It’s appropriately called the Cubo. These aren’t much heavier than any other hard side around the same size.
Tumi split carry on wins hands down. I can clamshell it or not. There is only a thin zippable divider between the two sides. I use it as top loader to start my trip, then separate dirty from clean as trip progresses. Game changer.
Oh, bought that bag a few months ago (mine is pink). I love it to bits. My brother was impressed by it and how smooth it rolls. He ended up getting the black and red wheel one. I highly recommend it.
The idea of using the cup holder like extra nightstand room is so handy! The hotel I stayed at in Paris had TINY nightstands that were attached to the headboard, so you couldn’t even move the if you wanted to.
I just transitioned from a regular Travelpro deep bin carry-on to a Tumi clamshell hybrid and I love it. Most of my trips involve multiple locations and I like having the two separate compartments so I can have one compartment for, say, casual wear and one for more dressy clothes. Or one for cold weather and one for warmer weather. If you're going someplace where you'll stay and not to anywhere, a deep bin bag is great because you can fit a lot.
Great review Ally. Thank you. I really love the top opening concept better. Finally a classic regular suitcase, with a durable outside. Cup holder genius !! The clamshells are a pain to open and close. I hope suitcase companies do come out with a set in this style and durable material. I hope it goes on sale for prime day 😊
I had a soft side like this when I started using packing cubes. I converted to clamshell because I like to be able to see my things at a glance. Especially those loose things that may not be in a cube.
I recently had two of these style bags decided to rehome them because they were the canvas/clothe typed and weren’t lightweight from some 15years ago. Good for road trips but not flights. They weren’t half bad but if i packed something deep down that I suddenly needed to remove later on it’s a big hassle. Clam-shells are my go-to choice now because they open wide and sometimes can pack for two people on short trips; his and hers. So, to each their own i say.
I’m in the market for new luggage and have been toying with the idea of a clamshell. I’ve never used one before, but after returning from South Africa, I am considering one. I spent more time digging through my luggage for things at the bottom, versus picking from one side. I see people talk about opening space with a clamshell, but my rooms are always big enough to open. Also, I’ve never had to open my bag mid flight for anything.
I would love to see a video of you transferring what you put into your top open case into your clamshell just to see which actually holds more. I was team top open until I transferred it all into the same size 22x14x9 clam shell to see…I was so surprised to see that I could fit everything from the top open case PLUS a Jean jacket, hooded sweatshirt, cross body, and a towel.
I love my travel pro carry on. I like to open the lid. Very easy to grab something I need at the airport. So much easier? Never understood why the middle zip was so popular lol. I travel a lot
As a frequent traveller who started travelling before clamshell bags existed I prefer the newer style. It’s far easier to pack and I can definitely get more in to a clamshell. I particularly like the ability to pack each side separately. I pack plus size clothes and would never go back to a top opening case. The absolute best think about a clamshell is the ability to pack everything snugly when the bag isn’t full.
I got a rolling clam shell suitcase recently and the first time I used it I realized that the open top style is so much better. The first chance I get, I'm replacing the clam shell bag. It's too inconvenient at the hotel.
That is the BEST travel related item I've yet to see. I began using travel bags that really do make packing/travel easier. I'll try this suitcase. THANK YOU! 👍👍
@@AnikanotevenUnfortunately, it fits and packs the same amount. Only real difference in capacity is the fact youre not limited to something that is 4 inches tall per side.
8.3 pounds is a little more than twice as heavy as my hardshell carry-on. I don’t mind the clamshell design, but the heaviness of that bag would be a deal-breaker on a lot of international flights with strict weight limits.
Thank you so much for reviewing this case. I am a fan of hard sided carry on luggage but needed a top open to fit a motorcycle helmet, which takes up 1/2 the case. This case fit my helmet and clothes (I did have to put some clothes in my personal item). The wheels were incredibly smooth. I used the cup holder. And love the opening straps that hold the top up. Thank you!!!
Seeing it for $160 on U.S. Amazon. The creator (who is clearly Canadian given her obvious accent and cadence) did the conversion correctly, it’s just more expensive now.
@@lawr17..but of course it’s more expensive now…. Over 150,000 folk have seen this video, and either ordered one from amazon or made a video about this suitcase and posted on youtube. 🥸
But in a clamshell luggage, I DON'T have to take everything out to reach for something I need mid flight. I am able to quickly open side and keep other side zippered up while I pull out my items.
I can see this for travel to places with smooth sidewalks and walkways. In Europe with cobblestones the small wheels take a lot of punishment. I look for sturdy wheels and frame/ handles in that scenario.
I bought another brand, similar concept. It’s 9.25 inches wide and flew Westjet to Canada and they made me check it on. That was $160 wasted. Best to get a bag 9” or less deep and no more than 20” high including handle and wheels for the Canadian airlines.
Love your reviews I saw this in the Amazon store and loved the drink holder of all things. The bag reminds me of my beloved Motherlode with the way it opens. The Motherlode offers a bit more space in the top which is where I store sports equipment, water shoes, puffy jacket, umbrella, etc. stuff I rarely have to have and I love that. I jump between it and my Away bag but always bring my wheeled Jansport backpack as I often check the other bag on the way back and my carry-on must have wheels! XO, Kelly
Did you know that for flying international out of Sydney Australia my weight limit for carry on was 7kg. This bag looks great but it weighs in at 8.8 pounds. That’s 3.99 kilos. So I could take 3 kgs of luggage in my carry for the flight.
Been waiting all my life for deep hard case top opening bag.i bought a mid size bag . Mine is a ZOOMLITE it’s so fantastic as it has an expansion joint in the centre so any pockets just love it and I bought two more one cabin and one large
Bought the white one last year for travel to Mongolia and I absolutely love it. Only down side is it's heavy for a carry on so might not be the greatest for international travel as carry ons have weight restrictions.
I have a vanity impressions xl vanity, which is a luggage size vanity. It has an electric plug, Wi-Fi, radio, Bluetooth, speaker, adjustable lights, and all the plug ins for your computer and phone. It also has a detachable case inside.
I had that style in the 70s and 80s and it was good. I have a clamshell now and it's good, too. Most important is that you said, you can take something that size for 3 weeks.
The beauty of the clamshell design, aside from the organization, is that many of them also allow for expansion in the middle. The luggage featured in the video can't do that. Additionally, I'm not a fan of soft luggage because they don't hold up as well when getting wet or rained on-- the water will just seep right through. I've also heard people mention bed bugs can be an issue with soft luggage. Not so with hardshells.
As someone with pretty bad arthritis in my hands i have a absolute disaster using the zippers on my clamshell type suitcase, this looks much easier to close and open. If it was just a little lighter in weight it would be a no brainer purchase for me. I'll consider it for sure though. Thanks.
I just found my new replacement carry on. I was about to get the 20 inch carry on I saw you review earlier. As I travel for business it should be perfect for dress shoes and sports coats and slacks. If it had a quick access pocket on the outside for magazines and charging cable it would be the ultimate carry on.
I got a different model from that same brand. Also a hard shell with front opening, but has a laptop sleeve and some front organization pockets. Mostly good things to say but a few minor negatives. You have to carefully zip up inside panel, making sure the zippers aren’t dangling, before you zip the outside panel. They sort of crash into each other if you’re not paying attention.
I see that it is .5” too long for Air Canada and 1” too long for WestJet. I wonder how many suitcases does one need to buy to fit in the sizer for the few different airlines you fly with…and where the hell do you store them if you live in a condo!!?? How I wish for the old days of travel.😞
Ya it's weird! I mostly fly WJ (which is smaller than AC) and it fits fine as demo'd in the video lol. My most recent carry-on video shows and talks about this!
West Jet has introduced new rules for passengers. They have done away with the free carry on case. You can bring a “ personal” bag which must go under the seat in front. Otherwise you must pay to bring a carry on case onto the plane.
It is easier and fastest to access the items on top of the bin. Whatever is at the bottom, though.... Another negative is that you cannot easily distribute the weights is with the others.
The quality of the handle, the wheels and the zipper are crucial. Does the bag roll straight? Does it tend to tip over? Are the wheels protected at all? Cup holder is cute but the other factors make or break a bag.
My wife and I are going on a trip and wanted new luggage. We watched several of your videos and found them to be enjoyable and very informative. Based in large part on your videos I purchased a Mixi 20 in carry on. I feel badly because you didn't get credit at Amazon for the purchase. I have not previously made a purchase based on a uTube video. The issue for me was the location of the link for you to get credit. It is under ....more. I suggest that it would be helpful to the viewer and you if there was a more obvious link that gives you credit for the purchase. Thanks for your videos.
Err, if you have stuff in the bottom of the case, you still will be ruffling through all the other items in the bag. I'm not a fan of clam shell either, but with the clam shell you can actually devide your items into sections in the upper and lower half. Not so with this item.
You totally influenced me in to getting this. It is a little heavy but I'm flying Canada Air so it should be good. I just packed this plus my personal item for a trip to Greece and I was able to pack beyond my usual summer capsule (using compression cubes) with room to spare! Cant beat the price point on this. Fully packed it weighs 9.7kg.
This lid at one side makes more sense than the two equal halves idea. Now this new concept is out, we will likely see a gradual takeover of this design from all brands.
I have the biggest size in this style and I really like it. Now I have the hard shell benefits without my suitcase splitting in half to open. However,I tend to be overweight because there is so much room to fill.😬
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available for people in Europe. It looks like an awesome item, and I will need a new carry-on in a few months, but I can't seem to find anything about it for people outside of the American continent. :/
Nice bag, love the front opening door. Still, the weight is an issue on international flights with restrictive weight requirements - love to see more options like this which weigh less - great coverage as usual
You gotta have a DAB (deep ass bin) LOL. I prefer this type of luggage as well. It is so much easier to pack and handle. I used to have a very large soft luggage suitcase and it had that design. Now I am a minimal packer and this one looks good. Thanks for your insight. 😁😁
So this is a hardshell version of my 20 year old soft-sided cordura nylon bag. Actually looks pretty nice - I have never been a fan of the clamshell style suitcases. Also, every airline I've been on recommends placing the bag in the overhead bin with the wheels facing out.
We upgraded our luggage to 4 wheel clamshell style. After a recent 4 weeks trip to Europe I dislike both the 4 wheel design which is very difficult to maneuver on cobblestone streets and the clamshell design that means both cases need to be fully open to access taking up valuable floor space. If I can I am going back to a 2 wheeler soft case with a lid which I much prefer. I had a beauty some years back but baggage services wrecked it during a trip to Bali.
i didnt get to hear you mentioning the pen attack on this luggage video. i noticed its real hard to search for zipperless luggage/suitcases online and although this one has a zipper it appears that it would allow you to place valuables deeper into the luggage space thereby preventing casual theft of contents.
On the contrary, clamshell design is far more practical, because you reach for your insides twice as fast. And that fancy cup and phone holder.. you can have that on clamshells as well. BTW: this "new" design of yours is actually an old, original box design from 100 years ago and clamshell is an evolutionary improvement. But - if you prefere that retro-style - sure, go for it.
À one-sided suitcase is NOT easier to use th a clam shell if you want to access to things at the bottom so you would have to play and pack the stuff you need access to during your trip, or layover right at the top! The irritating thing about the clam shell is your things moving around if not packed well which is why a well-designed clam shell zips on one side and straps on the other. I bought a lightweight one 5 years ago for about 20€ and I'm still very happy with it. People need access to things at the bottom which is why good backpacks have a feature to get to the bottom: this is obviously not available in a single deep suitcase unless it's very small!
i would NOT store an open bag under a hotel bed. If there is a bed bug issue, you may end up taking some home with you. when I travel, I used an organized clamshell. My things stay in my bag and at night, I zip the bag closed and store it on it’s wheels.
Very informative video , 😄 I switched from a clamshell trolley bag to a softshell one , much more convenient . It also extends by a couple of inches to accomodate additional items . Will never use a clamshell bag again .
Just watched your video, four months later... and it is now 184.99$ in Canada. So it's probably an item you have to keep an eye on and jump on it when it comes on sale! It will go in my wish list for now, but great suggestion!
Hi, really interesting bag. I like 1 big container better than 2. My only concern is that it is too heavy. We are allowed for 8kg max in a carry on and this weight already half of it. I might consider this one for my travel when I do not fly. Thank you for the video.
3.8kg empty is actually quite heavy. I agree that the one opening from the top is game changing but my previous carry on not even 3kg empty. Mostly 2.6kg. So I'm not sure if I want to change to this because most airlines in Asia and Australia is very strick with the carry-on weight limit. But overall I always like your reviews. Regards from Hungary xx
The challenge I have with this design compared to a clamshell is whether you can pack pressed pants and carefully folded suit jackets so they don’t wrinkle too much. In a clamshell, I put these items on the flat/front side. The bottom of this bag has the handle tracks, so no flat surface. I guess you could try putting them on top, but then you can’t have easy access items like toiletries or laptop on top.
The only thing that doesn't last very long with me with luggage, if they have it, are the wheels. How are the wheels on this holding up? Could you do a review, say after 6 months or more, on how the wheels are doing?
I'll just stick with Travel Pro clamshell. It's actually NOT easier to get at your stuff if it's on the bottom. Yes, opening a clamshell is awkward, but at least you don't have to take your stuff out and potentially put it on the ground just to get at everything.
I’ve actually been considering that brand and type. I just got back from South Africa and was annoyed with trying to get things out of my luggage. I don’t like to hang my clothes on put them in drawers. Plus, there’s the balance of my regular luggage be front heavy, especially when I expand it 2”.
Clamshells, especially the bigger ones, just won't fit on the baggage rack in the hotel room. I'd have to lay it down on the floor. This design is much better, but durability could be an issue.

Dagne Dover just released a new luggage bag and I believe it opens like this.
Lojel USA sells these. They are a higher end Japanese brand. It’s appropriately called the Cubo. These aren’t much heavier than any other hard side around the same size.
Delsey do a top opening hard case that meets international carry on size. I researched so many to find it, and love it. It’s 3.1kg.
Tumi split carry on wins hands down. I can clamshell it or not. There is only a thin zippable divider between the two sides. I use it as top loader to start my trip, then separate dirty from clean as trip progresses. Game changer.
I find it cute that calls the clamshell "traditional." 😊
its amazing what can fit in a good 20 inch carry on for a tropical destination you could easy pack for almost 2 weeks in a bag like that!
Totally!
I've always used a soft sided carry on because I like the top open feature. Glad to see it is available with a more sturdy suitcase.
Oh, bought that bag a few months ago (mine is pink). I love it to bits. My brother was impressed by it and how smooth it rolls. He ended up getting the black and red wheel one. I highly recommend it.
How is yours holding so far? Thanks
Agreed, this top opening style (I call it duffel) is much better in small European hotel rooms.
I totally agree. They are hard to find nowadays. The footprint is also much smaller when open.
I travel a lot
clam shell is easier to organize.
Because everyone has different needs. There’s no such thing as one-size fits all. Use what works best for you.
3.8 kg that’s more than half the 7 kg weight allowance. It’s too heavy.
My thoughts too. I'd travel with a half empty bag just to keep at the 7kg limit.
I guess if you're flying domestic and they're not very strict (like some European or Asian airlines) then you can pack it full and be OK.
JUST ORDERED THIS BAG. I hope it arrives before Sunday. I'm hoping to use it on a flight and cruise. Thank you.
That is the BEST travel related item I've yet to see. I began using travel bags that really do make packing/travel easier. I'll try this suitcase. THANK YOU! 👍👍
Hopefully more companies will make this style, which looks so much saner than the clamshell, in accordance with their draconian size limits.
@@AnikanotevenUnfortunately, it fits and packs the same amount. Only real difference in capacity is the fact youre not limited to something that is 4 inches tall per side.
Love that it packs more and that it works for you but personally, its a hassle to dig thru the pile to find what you need
there are generally weight limits anyway on carry ons so packing more will generally = more weight so meh, I prefer some basic organization
That's what packing cubes and bags are for.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade you still have to dig thru the packing cubes.
My thoughts exactly. I don’t want to have to pull my packing cubes all out if I have to get one on the bottom.
I love this concept, especially for traveling places where I'm leaving all my clothes in the luggage during the stay.
I have been looking at these suitcases, so I’m glad you reviewed it. I’m so tired of the clamshell design. It just doesn’t make sense.
Top open design….AKA, what soft shell suitcases have been doing for ages! 😏. Long live the soft shells!
Finally, time to consider a hard shell 😊 will wait for Prime Day in 2 weeks!
It’s $189 US on Amazon in the US.
that top opening feature is the only way a hard shell suitcase makes sense to me
Great video! We prefer Travelpro soft black bags because they don't show the dirt or scuffs. To make them easy to spot, we use colored handle wraps.
But in a clamshell luggage, I DON'T have to take everything out to reach for something I need mid flight. I am able to quickly open side and keep other side zippered up while I pull out my items.
Takes wider space to open though.
Westjet has to be one of the strictest airlines there is! I always hear these stories about them!
XO, Kelly
As Always.. so good and informative! I have learned so much about packing and travel thanks to your channel. Thank YOU and All The Best!
THANK YOU for this video!
Always hated clamshells, but they were almost always the most available and cheapest.
Time to overhaul my gear!!!
Thanks Aly, I love that bag but who is the manufacturer or the make?
The beauty of the clamshell design, aside from the organization, is that many of them also allow for expansion in the middle. The luggage featured in the video can't do that. Additionally, I'm not a fan of soft luggage because they don't hold up as well when getting wet or rained on-- the water will just seep right through. I've also heard people mention bed bugs can be an issue with soft luggage. Not so with hardshells.
Wow! Mind blowing! I wonder why this isn't the default format (or even common).
I live in a condo. I don’t have this carry on but my current one either lives under my bed or up on the top shelf in the closet.
My bag is about the same width (soft sided) and didn't fit in WJs sizer, and it wasnt overstuffed:(
They are getting very picky!
West Jet has introduced new rules for passengers. They have done away with the free carry on case. You can bring a “ personal” bag which must go under the seat in front. Otherwise you must pay to bring a carry on case onto the plane.
@@BenDorm that's incorrect, it's only for the ultra basic fare if someone chooses that option.
Works well for small spaces like in Japan!! Thank you, I was looking for this specific style of carry on.
It is easier and fastest to access the items on top of the bin. Whatever is at the bottom, though....
Another negative is that you cannot easily distribute the weights is with the others.
The bag is cool. Loved the charging port that you can hook the power source to and use the outside access ports.
I really like thos design. I was thinking why don't companies creat a top open only, and now I found your video. Thanks!
I got a 5.11 roller bag that is expandable with a top open, perfect for a 7 day trip. I hated the clamshell design of most spinners on the market
I have one of these but mine opens lengthwise - I love it because I can open/close it without running my hands between the nasty wheels!
The quality of the handle, the wheels and the zipper are crucial. Does the bag roll straight? Does it tend to tip over? Are the wheels protected at all?
Cup holder is cute but the other factors make or break a bag.
It's very sturdy all around, one of the smoothest bags I've owned.
Not a new design....but yeah
I have the biggest size in this style and I really like it. Now I have the hard shell benefits without my suitcase splitting in half to open. However,I tend to be overweight because there is so much room to fill.😬
Before the semi-hard clamshells, we had these deep suitcases with a flat cover. It’s actually nothing new. I know because I’m THAT old. 😂
Haha love me a DAB!
Clamshells are so painful. Love this!
Counterpoint, with a clamshell, you can slide it under the bed while open so it's out of the way. Just slide it out whenever you need anything
I like this but thinking about it, I would say most of the hotel beds I've stayed in don't have an open space underneath, like they're closed up.
i would NOT store an open bag under a hotel bed.
I'll never fly again, but if I did, this would be my bag. Love the cup holder!
Hi, really interesting bag. I like 1 big container better than 2. My only concern is that it is too heavy. We are allowed for 8kg max in a carry on and this weight already half of it. I might consider this one for my travel when I do not fly. Thank you for the video.
3,80kg empty weight seems a lot for budget airlines like scoot which gives 10kg carry on. Some are worse at 7kg limitations.
Stay tuned, currently putting together a similar video for my next favorite bag which is 2.5kgs!
Garment bag made for suits would solve that issue. Usually has a poly frame sheet in those.
Are you still using this piece of luggage? Has it held up well?
This is nice. Is the battery removable for the new traveling restrictions?
I've never used a clamshell, always a top opening bag. I prefer intl dimensions, wider and less tall.
