I just realized that at the 1:28 mark, it says 13.5 lbs *6.07 kg)... to be clear, that's with my luggage already packed with just business travel clothes and toiletries - that is *NOT* the weight of the empty luggage, lol The weight of the luggage itself is just over 7 lbs (3.2 kg)
After 20 years of business travel my go to bag I found was at the end of my career. My advise or requirements for a carry on, fix shell (non-expandable), sub 20” and a fixed aluminum frame meaning no zipper. IMO, the standard 21” carry on will only fit overhead compartments 75% of the time especially on a full flight, looking for space. My go to was a short run Delsey, labeled 18” spinner. The metal frame no zipper closure makes for the quickest opening and closing when you need to access the contents on the fly like at TSA. You never want to have to fight a zipper on a stuffed bag in a hurry. A sub 20” is almost guaranteed to fit the overhead on regular commercial flights, and 50% of the time it will actually fit in local commuter flight common on the east coast. I’d never ever consider a 21” as a carry on. Especially if it expandable or not a hard case. None of my electronic are ever on the carry on and that what a underseat bag is for. Sadly Delsey only made this bag for like a season and for me it’s a total god send. As to why it’s so difficult to find a true sub 20” carry on, is beyond me.
I have 2 different travel ‘systems’ depending on where we are going - An Osprey Farpoint 40, daypack and waist pack - A Samsonite Pro-DLX carry on case, laptop backpack and cross body bag Between these two setups I’ve always got exactly the right gear, and both are absolutely bomb proof!
I really like my Solgaard Check-in Closet. It comes with this really neat collapsing cloth divider thing that you just hang in the closet and your clothes stay organized. It's like having a small dresser with me wherever.
After LOTS of research I finally pulled the trigger on a check in medium and carry on small monos set in the same green color way. I have never had nice hard shell luggage and I have to say they are so worth it. I’m glad to see you like them just as much as I do and that they stand the test of time durability wise! Hopefully mine will serve me for quite some time
For hard shell luggage I have used Rimowa for about 15 years now. Apart from the obvious dents and scratches (it's not a bug, it's a feature) my most travelled Rimowa had one rivet replaced. No other issues to report. The downside is that the baddies realize it's expansive which can be a serious issue depending on the place you are going.
Haha... I prefer not to catch the eye of anyone when I travel, so that, in and of itself, despite being funny, is a real consideration. Don't know if you mean baddies like 💃or baddies like 🥷, but either way, I try to keep a low profile to not stick out lol. And one single rivet over 15 years is a fantastic track record in my opinion.
With baddies I mainly mean pickpockets and the like. I have a trip to Japan coming up, where the Rimowa is really common, but as a caucasian it still might be hard to blend in 😉
my 1000 USD rimowa broke in just 1 year and they charge over 200 bucks to replace the locking mechanism, like dude.... ain't buying another rimowa ever again
I've used the Monos Hybrid Carry-On for a couple years now and absolutely love it. The body is a nice polycarbonate shell and it has anodized aluminum corner guards. The main selling point for me was it has absolutely no zippers. The frame is all aluminum and it is held closed by two TSA Locks. A ton of storage just like their normal carry-on as well. It doesn't have the laptop area like the Carry-On pro but if I bring my laptop it just goes in my backpack like my tablet.
I just got this bag and was shocked at how much the front pocket on the Monos took up of the internal space of the bag! Definitely an interesting way to design it.
@@poolvision53 I bought a Level8 voyager a few months ago but have not used it yet. It looks pretty thick so I am a bit worried that it won’t fit the international flight guideline of 9 inches in depth.
I just swapped from a travel pro professional spinner to the smaller monos carry on non pro. It amazes me how much more space I have to pack since the monos is a full rectangle and the travel pro is a wedge. I finally see how people can pack as much as they can in the hard shells. Also love my peak designs packing cubes. Wouldn’t trade them for anything! Love that the small and medium fit in one side and I have enough clothes for a week of travel with room on the opposite side for anything else.
❤❤❤...Really enjoy your CLEAR & CONCISE content. As a frequent traveler, I've had to rethink packing. It's been an ever evolving journey, and it really does take time getting an individual's system down pat. Currently own both Rimowa Int'l carry-on and Samsonite. I've found I've gone back to the Samsonite as it is lighter, has handles in the correct places to effect safe overhead lifting and is soft-sided (best for US one-bag packing, too big for international carriers). After having suffered a serious shoulder injury, I had to stop using a backpack and am now rethinking that "personal item" and it's ease of carry with one arm through the world's airports / as well as the reality of checking bags that somehow mysteriously get delayed or lost at least 60% of the time. It would make sense for my personal item to have wheels...but it's that combined carry-on weight issue that rears its ugly head more often than not these days. I heard your comment about your Mother...how does she handle the "personal item"? I've currently paired waaaaay down to a very small lightweight crossbody bag. Thank you again and please stay safe on your travels to Asia!...Edit: Hope your Mom is doing better. Just watched your video on packing for 2 in one bag. EXCELLENT video!
It's interesting - many folks I meet at airport lounges all seem to mirror preferring Samsonite over Rimowa. Sorry to hear about your shoulder injury - it's crazy how we take mobility for granted and when something big happens, the lack of mobility is all we can notice for a long while. My mother's personal item (though unsatisfying) is just a small purse, haha. She is, after all, an older lady with little tech needs - her passport, wallet, kleenex, and portable garbage bag are all she really needs, so it's definitely both very small and very lightweight.
Just edited my original post here. Truly excellent video. As I also travel mostly in Asia, I am at least happy clothing doesn't need to be heavy as in winter when I travel to Europe. Thank you for your response. A "Maurice Moves" fan :-)
Based on this video and doing some extra research I got my wife the Monos Carry-On Pro before her trip to Australia in a few weeks. She hasn't even used it yet and she loves it. She had wanted a hard-shell but was wanting an outside pocket which isn't a common thing on most brands. After looking at the selections at Target (we just happened to be there) I told we need to spend some real money on something dependable....and I had just seen this video.
The Wife used her carry-on Pro for her trip and now she's sold. On that trip the extendable handle on her 20-year-old soft check-in suitcase broke so I got her the Monos check-in medium after she returned and we hope to try it out soon.
I'm kind of a diehard North Face Base Camp Duffel in size Small with packing cubes kinda guy - but some comments on this review for people who prefer or need a roller (like your Mom!), here's my thoughts: The accordion front pocket only seems valuable if the intention is only to bring one bag, and you're not doing a typical business trip. By this I mean, I often travel for work and use the hotel as my base, where the NF Duffle stays. My personal item, a Fjallraven Raven 20L backpack that holds my laptop, iPad, Kindle and more on the plane, is what I take into the office. I can't see a place where I'd be carting the roller into the office daily just to safely transport my laptop, and if I'm using this roller + a backpack for my laptop, why upgrade to the "Pro" model? Of course, this might be better suited for travel trips, but again, I'd still prefer to have some sort of day pack (sling at minimum or backpack). I guess some people might pack a lightweight backpack inside this roller? I'm likely overthinking this, but I think the problem I have with rollers is that they try to do to much and be too many things. In this case, that front panel is clearly for tech, and while a lightweight rain shell would fit in there, it would be a significant cost upgrade for a what if scenario vs the standard model.
Went on Moment website to check if their Carry-On model is compatible with Ryanair (had a problem with them on my recent flight). On the website they say “Yes”, but upon checking, Carry-On model exterior size is 22x14x9 while Ryanair specs are 21.6x15.7x7.8 (55x40x20 cm)
Thanks for sharing this. Sorry to hear of your experience on your recent flight with Ryanair... just hope it didn't end up costing you more money and headache with forced check-in being SO close to their regulated size. Again, thanks for sharing, since it serves as a reminder to me that even IF a website claims their pieces are compliant, it's still important for me to go to the airline's website to validate when I travel with a new carrier.
The chinese ones are winning because they have a cup holder and a phone holder. That's a great idea for a carry on. So many times I don't have a place for my drink in an airport.
Would love and buy these if they made these expandable. Just add a second zipper off the main and let it pop out 2-3” for when stuff won’t fit in your luggage.
I'm so over clamshell bags. But I dont want the standard soft sided bags. So i ordered one of the few hard shell bags that have the old school top-open lid. Which means , everything is packed on one side of the bag only and the other side is just the lid. Opening up the heavy sides is just something I'm not into anymore even if i have to sacrifice some bells and whistles. Although they do have a version with a lap top opening if that's one of your priorities.
@gutsynin6156 I have the HANKE top lid version. Hanke does sell 50-50 clam shell too, so you really have to pay attention before purchasing. I also have the Briggs And Riley, which is 70/30 bag. It's in-between a 50-50 clam shell and an old school 100% tpp lid.
Just a heads up in Canada Air transit it is not compliant for carry on. The wheels stick out a bit far and we have been flagged several times. Not monos fault, the "standards "should be standard across the industry. Great piece otherwise.
I was thinking to myself, that Terrazzo limited edition would be PERFECT for check-in luggage since it's so unique visually and when it comes down the luggage carousel, it's so obviously "yours" haha.
@@wasmadeinthe80s Does the Terrazzo have any blue in it? I’m thinking of that one as the carry-on and the dark blue as a checked bag to go with it, but not sure if that will coordinate well as it’s hard to tell what color all the little spots are on-line.
You should try the Kabuto Flex Cabin Carry-on. It's a carry-on that also expands 50% outward into a check-in luggage. I would love to here your review on it in comparison to your other luggage experiences.
I mean this in the nicest way because I like your channel, but I feel like a lot of your videos are turning into product reviews and recommendations instead of higher level lifestyle stuff, which is frankly why I subscribed. Just some constructive criticism.
I agree - same reason I subscribed- however I get that he s reviewing his own experience - for products he actually uses- unlike UA-camrs that try to sell you products they don’t even use
This is very interesting because I actually subscribed for this type of content instead of the other type of content and I prefer this type of content from him. I’ve watched past videos because I’ve enjoyed these so much and while I think they’re solid &/or sometimes good, I really think he’s best suited for EDC and organization stuff a looooot more than the pseudo guru stuff about health and debt and whatnot. And I mean that in the nicest way possible also. He’s top tier edc content creation. That being said, the channel is about getting life together so I’m down for the variety. But def can’t lose this type of stuff.
Always inspiring when even not sponsored by the product you reviewed (or elaborated). Kudos, brother! Ps: street shots of Jakarta should be a hint for you to return to the Big Durian
I've never understood the front compartment for laptops or electronics. You are putting your most valuable items in the one pocket that is not locked and can easily be stolen.
❤ @MauriceMoves ❤ Whew! Glad you cleared that up! 😅 I've pared things down in my carry on but can't get near your light weight. I admit you've had a positive influence on what I leave behind now. Thank you! Inspired travels.
Last trip I travelled with soft rolling luggage, a backpack with stow-able straps with handle and wheels. On it's own it is 2.9kg though so I'm finding it tough to fit the rest in under 7kg for carry-on.
Bro... I like your channel and you are likely the reason I have a Katsu knife now (though not the awesome folding hatchet)! But um... This is basically the exact same as Sam's rolling carry on luggage for more than twice the price in less colors! Oh and without the USB CHARGING STATION! It looks the exact same with the exact same pockets and locks but at Sam's its about $80 and you can get a larger one in a set!
I tried this one last year. My not very large Dell laptop (15.6). It fit in, but even though it's thin,it wouldn't close properly. Also, check their return policy. While they were very good about it, if i hadn't contacted them return shipping would have been a lot.
I have the Pro Plus and the front pocket is nearly useless. The pocket is way too thin and narrow so even a MacBook Pro 16 will be a hard fit for the laptop pouch. You can put thicker laptop in the front pouch or not in any pouch but the 3 zippers will scratch the hell out of your laptop if not outright crack the screen
Hi, I just discovered your experience through a detailed view of travel suitcases video. Everyone focused on how critical all the wheels were made and designed. Let me share my thoughts. I go to Japan frequently. Drugging, large or small suitcases in public is the main event in Japan. Yes, I agree that excellent wheels are essential. But, there are yellow rounded raised braille blocks in every train station in Japan. They are designed to help blind people and have a safety purpose for the yellow line for everyone when the train is approaching. As far as my experience goes, on many trips in Japan, all the suitcases' wheels lose control, and I am very annoyed to go through this. I saw a suitcase in Japan that had cushion wheels that made people easily overcome any bumps and dips on the surface without frustration pulling their suitcases. I do not know that brand name. I hope any suitcase manufacturer develops wheels like air suspension for vehicles, guaranteeing your suitcase will pull smoothly regardless of surface condition in public.
Those Monos luggage pieces sure look nice and high quality. I tried to purchase one but living in Mexico made the shipping fee more expensive than the suitcase itself 😂 Even with a 20% they very generously offered the price was unaffordable for me. I ended up buying a local brand (fabricated in China though) sporting a design and materials eerily similar to the Away brand. Makrolon on the outside, Hinomoto silent wheels. In the end I got a good deal I guess.
Maurice - since you have a fab shop, have you considered rebuilding your favourite piece of luggage with aluminum to make it last longer? I'm considering a Airwheel SR5 Smart Following Suitcase but I'm not confident in the shell quality. It might be worth replacing all those mechanical/electrical parts in a hardened shell. Fellow Torontonian.
Still searching for a decent hard shell carry on with a non clam shell opening (essentially the location of the pro panel would be the sole opening of the luggage).
I dont have any Monos. My first and only carry on hard shell luggage was a cheap one from Amazon with R2-D2 on it forever a Star Wars fan the original series not the new stuff. It still works and does great on cobblestones and other hard surfaces I am thinking about getting a larger bag maybe. I love not having to pay check in fees with my existing bag.
what i want to know is how do these more exensive suitcases differ from suitcases you find on amazon that are much cheaer. I have a set of 3 suitcases that bought on amazon for under 200$. It comes with a regular carry on, check in medium, and check in large.... all for 200$. And they have been great so far, i used them on multiple trips. So why are suitcases like this more expensive? Whats better about them?
Salesman luggages and accessories are not featured in you production series. What are recommended gears for traveling professionals such doctor's, technicians, sport trainers, homework tutors? This production recommendation is free if you feature them at your own time.
why is it so heavy (when empty)? just earlier today i saw a swivel wheeled cabin bag for usd$30.00. ok it wasn't as fancy but it was 3.75lbs lighter than this one. that's 3.75lbs of my stuff i can take with me, spare shoes/ extra outfit or something. (i think I'll go with one of the super cheapo ones. sure they're not made to the same high standards but they're going to last several trips)
I’m not sure about the additional luggage for “goodies”. Especially from Japan I’ve never had issues using the post office to ship items back to myself. I just budget in about $100 for shipping fees and only my most important items I will keep on me. I do concede that a lot of my work has me shipping internationally so I am more familiar with the process then an average person, but it’s not much of an issue as long as you read the fields and keep receipts.
Maurice, I see lots of hate and discourse over using the Pakt Travel backpack V2 on reddit onebag. Is it tough to get the bag down in weight for carry on for a 14 day trip so we dont have to check it in? I'm torn between that and the Aer Travel Pack 3 for a 14 day Japan trip and fell into the rabbit hole of onebag travel and love the idea.
From my research those two are very similar in price and weight, they're both very sturdy and heavy (when empty). I think you need to figure out what you would bring on a trip, and how heavy your gear is before choose a backpack.
For me, since mostly airlines have one carry on and one personal bag onboard. I've always have a foldable backpack like a matador on grid 16L that can be used just in case I need an extra bag to lower weight on my pakt. Yes it's not one bag but still compact enough to get you out of those situations and adds options later
@@JH-pq6dm That is great advice, thanks! I will definitely have to plan that out a little more than the initial thought. Gear weight is definitely unknown currently and would help with that decision I think
@@asianspec That sounds like a fantastic option to help out. I'll definitely have to look into how much my gear weighs and plan a little more before settling on a bag perhaps.
Dude, been watching some of your EDC videos, and I like the conciseness you put in to your content. I do have one question though, is it just me, or are the animated shlongs at the end intentional? 🧐
Monos Buyer Beware: Scratches on Luggage Be cautious when purchasing this luggage, as it is highly prone to scratches. After just a one-week trip without checking it in, I found scratches all over the surface. Additionally, the 100-day trial period only allows for the luggage to be inspected or tested in your living room. Please pay close attention to the fine print before making a decision.
Using Rimowa as the “standard” for price comparison is misguided. Rimowa is an LVMH luxury brand. Sure the quality is fine, but a big part of what you’re paying for is the brand. So your argument doesn’t really land when you suggest Monos provides excellent value since it is a third of the price of Rimowa…

His life is travel. I like the videos
Paid advertising pays the bills

IMO the 19” Delsey Aero Helium has a much better front laptop pocket and it’s $100 cheaper.
Always inspiring when even not sponsored by the product you reviewed (or elaborated). Kudos, brother!
Ps: street shots of Jakarta should be a hint for you to return to the Big Durian
I'll be in Jakarta in both February and April - can't wait!
@@MauriceMoves roger that!
@@MauriceMoves please holler back if you got time for coffee in Jakarta, brother
I've never understood the front compartment for laptops or electronics. You are putting your most valuable items in the one pocket that is not locked and can easily be stolen.
❤ @MauriceMoves ❤
Whew!
Great video Maurice, thanks for posting. Just wondering about the link to the luggage scale. Did I miss it somewhere?
Good to know! Will be visiting Sam’s now lol
I enjoyed the video, and also wanted to say hi from Taiwan!
my heart just stopped for a second when he placed the shoe on the macbook!!!😅🤣
Fear not, hehe.. those were a brand new pair (Christmas gift from mommmmm) 🤙
Well, how do _you_ boot your macbook?
I tried this one last year. My not very large Dell laptop (15.6). It fit in, but even though it's thin,it wouldn't close properly. Also, check their return policy. While they were very good about it, if i hadn't contacted them return shipping would have been a lot.
Great job on this video. Did you feel the need for an expanded version? Was the 36L volume enough ? I'm always buying goodies for the trip back hom.
Hi, @MauriceMoves. At 08:05 you have a case for your glasses hanging on your backpack. What is it called?
Love my monos !!!
i have to be honest, it makes me reminder a carry-on by hanke that came out last year
Thank you for this information. Looking forward to the next time I get to travel and will check this out.
Caribee has some pretty good combo options.
I like Pacsafe for small bags
Hey Maurice, that link to the luggage is not working for me. I can Google it, but just letting you know.
Hi. Can you fit 2 laptops inside the front compartment? I have a MacBook Pro 16" and Lenovo Legion 16". Thank you!!
Does your discount code work with the discounts and 20% off code already shown on the Monos website? Or is that a code that will work at any time?
This is basically a copy of the Horizn Studios carry on that I have, minus the powerbank
Briggs & Riley as it does not take up interior space with the handle or wheels.
Victorinox Spectre 3.0, a bit more expensive but crosses out your last critic points.
Still searching for a decent hard shell carry on with a non clam shell opening (essentially the location of the pro panel would be the sole opening of the luggage).
Monos have a Valentines special on now.
Maybe I missed it, but how is this the best of both soft and hard case luggages as mentioned in the into?
Australia has a 7 kg weight limit for most of the airlines to leave the country so the lightest carry on bay is needed. Can you suggest any please?
Off topic what kind of shoes were those! I'm looking for a nice walking shoe that looks good.
Nice Bags! Very sad, that they are not available in Europe =(
Cool video!
love your videos keep it up
Monos is good stuff! I agree! Side question, What are those green pants your rocking? 😂
Great video. The monos link doesn't work, and the discount code is invalid. Any chance of am update?
@mauricemoves would be great to get an updated link and code if possible!
what i want to know is how do these more exensive suitcases differ from suitcases you find on amazon that are much cheaer. I have a set of 3 suitcases that bought on amazon for under 200$. It comes with a regular carry on, check in medium, and check in large.... all for 200$. And they have been great so far, i used them on multiple trips. So why are suitcases like this more expensive? Whats better about them?
Secure luggage with zippers? Do you know it could be open in 2sec with a pen?
I cant access your links
some airlines don't even care if it fits the storage about tge seats at last
Maurice, that zipper scares me. I’d spend the money on the Hybrid version, even with the extra weight.
Salesman luggages and accessories are not featured in you production series. What are recommended gears for traveling professionals such doctor's, technicians, sport trainers, homework tutors? This production recommendation is free if you feature them at your own time.
please do a one bag travel with the brevite backpack
why is it so heavy (when empty)? just earlier today i saw a swivel wheeled cabin bag for usd$30.00. ok it wasn't as fancy but it was 3.75lbs lighter than this one. that's 3.75lbs of my stuff i can take with me, spare shoes/ extra outfit or something. (i think I'll go with one of the super cheapo ones. sure they're not made to the same high standards but they're going to last several trips)
You are supposed to declare ads at the start of the video right?
I think the only issue with the front zip, is passerby can stuff something in there. Like drugs. You'd become an unwilling mule after that.
i will stick with my Tumi thanks
Does the discount code still work?
As an asian, I am horrified when Maurice puts his shoe over the laptop at 1:50 😉
2 wheels is what matters, not sponsors.
Dude, been watching some of your EDC videos, and I like the conciseness you put in to your content. I do have one question though, is it just me, or are the animated shlongs at the end intentional? 🧐
No lock on the laptop compartiment is an automated no go for me...
The plus is not carry-on compliant on most airlines.
Monos Buyer Beware: Scratches on Luggage
Be cautious when purchasing this luggage, as it is highly prone to scratches. After just a one-week trip without checking it in, I found scratches all over the surface. Additionally, the 100-day trial period only allows for the luggage to be inspected or tested in your living room. Please pay close attention to the fine print before making a decision.
Hmm these look like clones of the Horizn Studios bags
Carry-on Pro at 7.8lb is far too heavy.
Sorry but zippers = problems with security and weather, especially if you have to check. Clamshell with gasket is the standard.
Weird for Air Transat it seem this carry on is to big (20x16x9) and your luggage Exterior measurements: 22" × 14" × 9" :(
The luggage itself is far to heavy!!!
It's only been 2 months and your discount code doesn't work anymore. Bummer! 😔
dang i am early

FIRST! 👆
These protruding exposed wheels will be gone in no more than 3 flights if you ever have to check it in. Never check it in.
Whats missing is the Non-Zipper Luggage, resistant to puncture and Zipper attacks, those padlocks aint gonna help.
Ughhhhh, not another clamshell luggage.
30 flights is not that much tbh, atleast when we're talking about durability
