I was on a canoe trip in northern Arkansas the first time I ever heard this. It freaked me out for a second until I realized what it was. We got a good glimpse of the bull elk about 60 years away. One of nature’s incredible scenes.
A few weeks back I was up camping for a fishing trip, and at dusk my first night up there a bobcat started to scream about probably about 100 yards from camp. Even finding out what it was didnt help, being the only person up there at the time.
Williams, Arizona 2018 I was camping, we see elk often out there, but I've never done a tent trip that far out in August. Rut season, the bugles went on all night long & very close to camp. I was mesmerized at all the communication happening 💛 I watched the sunrise & listened to the constant bugeling, along with cow elk chirping & some songs from flicker fledglings in the trees. One of my favorite campouts ever.
The most interesting part of this video for me was realizing that there are slits near the bull's eyes that are opening/contracting with his bugles. I had to research to find out what they are but apparently they're slits that contain a gland which produces pheromones during rutting season.
You can definitely tell he’s in rut cause he knows something is off when he’s checking out the camera man and almost bolts but that other bull calling makes him forget. Then he starts peeing all over when he walks away lol 3:25 marking that spot

i live in rural south carolina, right on the north carolina state line, and sometimes elk will wander down out of the state park and into my neck of the woods. first time i heard this call it was 3 am as i was getting into my car for work and i honest to god thought the wendigo was coming for me lol. itll make your hair stand up if you dont know what it is.

I live in Jasper, Alberta. During the fall, you can fall asleep to the sounds of the Elk. They may be doing the hanky panky, but their calls are still quite beautiful.

I just came home from my Colorado vacation. At night you could hear that call all around you. At 3:30 in the morning I heard the call. He was right on the other side of the wall by my head. It was very loud and completely wonderful.

I'm hoping to dedicate my Wildlife Biology career to reintroducing them and other species and bringing the possibility into the limelight.

Yeah it’s really only scary if you don’t know what the sound is but once you realize it’s just an elk it’s a lot less scary and more reassuring.
