The dungeon looks AWESOME JP! I'll have to try out pixel art too - I did some hand drawn pixel art a while back on grid paper. Given me the impetus to finish writing my RPG!
This channel has already shown how to make a pixel art map, how to make pixel art characters and now dungeons. I have a request sir... pixel art monster minis, please. You speak in a way that makes anyone feel capable of doing these arts too. ❤
Very cool looking. One suggestion - add like half a tile of shadow at the top edge of the water, it adds so much depth! You might even want to add 1 brick's worth of darker bricks along that top edge, so it looks like there's a short drop to the water.
Super inspiring video! I've just started coding a small, nostalgic RPG so this is perfect timing 😊 By the way, just swapping the blue for red will turn this into a singeing, dangerous volcano-dungeon, which immediately provides so many ideas for interesting monsters and plot fuel!
The 8-bit aesthetic is also usually limiting each sprite to 3 or 4 colors, since most 8-bit style things are imitating the NES. When you're talking about 15 x 15 tiles: that's good! A lot of NES games had black as the background layer color so they could use all 3 sprite colors for detail! These look really nice! I can't wait for the next asterlan odyssey book!
Very cool style. The details at the end made it even cooler. It would be fun if the owners of the water temple were tentacle people like the antagonists in the old game "day of the tentacle" they would fit the water theme and have the nostalgic touch.
The journey begins with a pen put to paper...and ends with a computer app program... I today are at the pen/paper level in 2023. Let us strive forward and do great things not yet imagined!
Very cool, very informative. If you need dedicated free tools as I do, I really like YCHR for pixel art, and Tiled for maps. Hope this could be useful for someone ;)
I love pixel art, although my skills with it are rather... questionable. I'm also getting back into the DM seat when Shadowdark RPG comes out... so, maybe it is finally time to combine those two hobbies into something great and terrifying! Love your videos, JP!
Thanks for sharing your process! I’ve always been fascinated with RPG maps, both pixel art and hand-drawn, despite only playing tabletop RPGs once or twice before. Do you find that you have visitors doing world building for non-RPG purposes or is that pretty rare?
I think lots of people like to just draw maps for fun. Sometimes it's nice to build a world without a game in mind. Also lots of writers looking to make maps for their fantasy books!

Damn, love it. I used to play a rogue-like game named Enter the Gungeon for almost 4 years and it was amazing, love pixel design
I remember when we used to play Roleplaying games with roleplaying... love those days. Cool art tho, goes well with the current fantasy boardgaming.
omg the algorithm fed this up to me and it's *just what i need*.
Fantastic! Re-do Ultima 3! Thanks and keep up the good work.

Yes! I forgot to mention that as one of the constraints I decided to drop when making the unique icons and adding those highlights.
