Really enjoyed this in-depth look behind the evolution of the art style. It's rare to get such an honest share of how real game development works behind all the glitz of the final trailers! 😄
I think you absolutely nailed the graphics. To be honest sometimes it is hard to see what is interactable and what is just decoration, but it's worth is because it's all mesmerizingly beautiful.
I have to say, I was first drawn to this project for the Heroes of Might and Magic style of gameplay, but the art style is really growing on me. Can't wait to try it out, one of my most anticipated games out there.
I remember first seeing this project in E3 2018. Immediately recognized the talent and drive behind it. Hopefully it will deliver the sells and recognition along with the gameplay :)
Very cool to see the way it changed over time. I like the gritty and less colourful style! What a happy coincidence that a talented artist just happened to live nearby ^^
Yeah, I was really surpised when I could just call him and ask him over for a coffee. I'd have never guessed I would find a guy just a few blocks away, seeing how rare it is with pixel artists of his skill level!
So excited for Songs of Conquest! Thanks for the behind the scenes look! My best friend and I are really looking forward to re-living the old days of the heroes of might and magic games haha. Wishing you all the best on your release!
Love to see and hear about the history of the art style! Such beautiful results. And when the camera zooms in at 9:37 it's sooooo cozy! I feel like I could live in that scene forever.
Funny how many new games were inspired by that Last Night trailer and that game don’t even has a release window as of now. Meanwhile, you guys are goin strong into early access with this amazingly beautiful visual style that is completely your own thing. Can’t wait to play it! Day one purchase for me!
amazing.. I love the dark misty undead areas. I remember HoMM5 teasers had these awesome undead night levels with glowing colours lights in the mist and then in the final game they were nowhere to be found and every undead mission was lit up in day light. Was so disappointed back then.
was a big fan of HOM&M, now a big fan of Song of Conquest! cant wait for the coop skirmish mode!! also started digging into pixel art after this game, i wonder how the 3D space was implemented into pixel realm? mainly by lighting and shadows? or are they real 3d models being pixelated?
So glad you found your style and held on the project with passion, ideas and energy which is definitely remarkable through your devlogs and especially the result so far. Amazing job and very likeable team! 👏👏👏
So far this game has the most gorgeous PA design I've ever seen and it is not the style itself that is superior (it is good), but, omg, the use of billboards, animations, shaders, lights and FOV depth effects make SoC's maps fantastically alive! More alive that in most of modern full-3D-billion-polygons titles actually. While I play it, I spent half of the time just looking at the picture and slowly scrolling the map. Yet, water deserves some love: more details, wave animation and lighting shaders are needed to make it match with the terrain.
Your story is truly awesome. And the progression you have made really shows and I hope you guys get all the recognition you deserve very much looking forward to a day 1 buy
Thank you so much. It has been hard work and over five years in development now. But we are still here and I hope we can push on for many more years if the game is a success!
More... Of... This...! This is extremely interesting and I am in awe at the talent on display. Would there be any point in making a video outlining how you work with the publisher? I think that could be interesting for people who are outside of the game dev business like me.
I'm a huge fan of HoM&M 2 and I'm not professional but I love doing pixelart. Songs of Conquest's artstyle is just dream for me. One of the best pixelart I've seen in a game since I started to play games in early 90s. Well done to all of the team and thank you for this eyegasm game =)
Damn, I never heard about your game before and what a nice video, I wish every developpment team did this! I'll definitely talk about your game to some friends.
How is this game not blowing up? Currently playing HoMM3 and SoC side-by-side, and SoC is simply a joy to play in comparison. Is it a situation of SoC is modern and as a consequence has less content/following? Either way, the visual style and general aesthetics are next level and could easily be generalized to other genres. Would love to see this as a pure RTS with a shameless nod to WC3. or something. Man, hard to put this down, and HoMM3 was hard enough.
Really great video and so interesting to learn about the story of making the game. You guys have smashed it, well done 🙌 Can't wait to play for the first time!!
Wow, fantastic video! I'm always very curious about behind-the-scenes of video games development, it was great to learn more about this. You're great at telling stories and the art style you've developed is truly unique and original - I love the game so far!
I'm not going to lie to you - I just watched Sseth's review of this game this morning, and was consistently struck by how I was getting distracted from his writing and delivery by how preposterously *good* the pixel art (and especially the pixel-art animation) for this game looked. So when I checked on Steam and saw it was on sale, I figured I'd pick it up - if nothing else, as a way to express my approval for the visual style. Given the contents of this video (and, admittedly, Sseth's), I'm highly excited by what I might find.
I'm so hanging out for the release in May. Literally thirsting to play this. Love videos like this that give insight into the development process. Gives a grander appreciation for the final product we recieive.
The development-journey is so interesting to watch, especially since you guys actually still have (working) older builds/designs/demo's. I totally agree with the updated pixel-artstyle adding another layer of atmosphere / depth to the experience and almost automatically gives it it's own *unique* identity; where the older style was pretty good, but did feel more generic and less mystical. Also, just updating the existing graphics and/or some lightning effect can have a drastic effect on the end-user experienced 'polishing level' ... sometimes things just come together & click like it's a complete rework; I'm pretty sure you described having that exact feeling/breakthrough experience as well !!!
Thank you and I agree, it was worth it, even though I have to admit, it sometimes was a bit heart breaking to throw away tons of assets. Especially for the poor artists... But, sometime you have to make the tough calls in order to improve and level up!
@@SongsofConquest Yes, it's a hard decision, but it seems to be the right one - and hopefully pays off - and a lesson beginning-devs need to see/learn too; especially since you might really need to convince your publisher too - for better or worse; and expectation management is usually a bit underestimated commercial aspect of game-dev ... Again thank you for sharing it all, it might just prevent an Indy-dev from making the wrong calls !
Oh i create many maps with the Editor, oh yes i do 😁 cant wait to start with it. Great congratulations to you for your legendary Game. Greetings from Germany.
I am a Chinese player, I really look forward to your work very much, and I like it very much. I have added it to my wishlist, and I will buy it when it is released!
You've put an amazing amount of work into the art of this game: I'm highly impressed. Incidentally, at the end where they show the Wielder stumbling upon the remains of a commander, I was wondering if we could have three rather than just two options.
Hmm, for that specific adventure map object there is only two options. Actually, most objects only have two options. In fact... all of them with options have two options, now that I think about it :D When you level up, however, there are three options to choose from!
Would just like to add some comments about Heroes 3 and what I would like to see here - firstly Id love an option for your hero here to be mounted on a horse, even just a cosmetic checkbox toggle with no actual benefit would be okay, would really be an iconic homage to h3. -I hated the primary units of h3, theyre auto targeted by towers, come in large weak numbers, and almost always just instantly die as cannon fodder thats annoying to replenish. -I never played campaign mode on h3, thats how much boring i thought it was compared to just playing a skirmish. And to be honest I dont mind that, just putting it out there so I hope you put a lot of love on skirmish cause thats where long term playability lies. -difficulty scaling on heroes 3 felt weird, I never felt like the AI was making smarter moves on the map but somehow always had a lot stronger army. Maybe thats how it should be (making smarter moves in building and economy) but it just never felt well tuned in terms of transparency or whatever. -I always thought non castle affilited camps were really super cool. (Rust dragons, fairy dragons) but you could only get them one at a time and took up a slot of a full army which makes getting them not feel so worth it even if you really wanted them. Hopefully you have these cool epic monsters also that you cant just buy in a castle, but have a better system in acquiring and keeping them. -maybe I just suck but the way I play the game is have one main hero stack up a big army and going across the map. The rest of the heroes are just for scouting or panick defending a castle, but one week worths of troops is hardly enough to defend so kinda sucks backtracking the main hero all the way. Could be many ways around this, just strengthening castle defenses, stronger weekly troops, defense bonuses etc. Just putting it out there. -so many variations of visitables (tree, well, tree of knowledge, hut etc) some are memorable, some are very not memorable mostly because of their generic designs and lack of reflection to the bonuses they give.
Interesting. It kinda reminds me similar changes that happened between HoMM 2 and 3 when the art style changed from a more bright and cartoonish to realistic and grim dark. I am a bit concerned about 2.5d though - it is quite easy to make it a bit Overwhelming and hard-to-read, like it happens, for example, in Star Renegades late game. Hope this won't be the case. Also, intial Marksman design reminds me that mad Farmer from Plants vs Zombies.
Ha ha, that mad farmer guy was fun :D The game CAN be a little bit hard to read at time, we are still working on improving it! But, you can always hit the ALT key to see all objects you can interact with. I think we will continue to improve readability when in Early Access!
Love the video and the background. Really makes you appreciate even more how far you've come and how amazing your visuals are. Good on you to not settle and search harder to find your games soul. I am following you all the whole way..maybe when I move back to sweden from Canada I'll join for coffee. Not an artist but data IO pro ;) ha d!
Gorgeous. I would have loved to work on design assets for such a beauty. It's gorgeous. Was pretty silly at the beginning. Very mobile looking. I don't think that searching for a pixel artist was the right move though. A top artist can make beautiful pixel art with no problem. Not saying that your picks were bad though... can't wait
A question that bothers me (sorry, if I missed it): will there be an "inside castle" view? I always like it in HOMM, it gives a safe cozy feeling like you are home, can relax and nowhere to hurry.
this looks good but i hope the art becomes a bit more like heroes3 in that the spears and shields dont flicker that much, it's going to be a good game no doubt but i hope that it will not be that prominet, cant wait to buy it :D
The art style does stand out from other games of the genre, and it's cool as heck is you ask me, but... please, please, make sure to have a good AI. I hope you'll take your time with that, especially within the early access period. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to play this with my brother, and let me say that I'm impressed by the amount communication either on discord and youtube. Thank you very much, and keep it up! : ))
@@SongsofConquest will you make movie about your plans for example - maybe bit more informations about - how multiplayer would look if there is any? Do you plan more than 3 factions? Have you got maybe magic tool like 'map generator'? 😁😉
What was Anders' reaction when he was first asked to start all the art over in a new style? Also, how is the art made to be 2.5D? Is it a 3D model with a sprite-looking texture on it, or is there some trick with "inflating" a sprite to have the depth needed for shadows, rotations, etc.? By the way, both styles look great and I'm excited for the game!
I'm glad you guys actually decided to overhaul the graphic. No offense but with the old artstyle, as much as I'm interested in the game it would be hard to sell it to my friends where they asked "why not just go back playing HOMM3". The new look really have a big impact to my group and we all went to wishlist the game.

Just beautiful ! I understand there must have been up and down, but you did achieve something amazing. Congrats to all the team.
Thanks Thomas! Indeed, lots of ups and downs. It goes with doing something that you are really passionate about I think!
The more realist darker pixel art style you ended up going with looks really nice and with gameplay mechanics similar to HoMM, excellent combination.

Yeah, you might be right!
So happy to be able to see bit much of the game and story behind it, however this just build up my impatience 😁
Still so much to wait though 😩😩
It's only a month away now!
@@SongsofConquest will you make movie about your plans for example - maybe bit more informations about -
how multiplayer would look if there is any?
Do you plan more than 3 factions?
Have you got maybe magic tool like 'map generator'? 😁😉
Similar to what OCTOPATH TRAVELER did for graphics?
Cant wait ... one day :D
Love it!
does this have like a "low graphics" mode? I have an old mac laptop, that overheats and slows down with even just streaming videos.
It has graphics setting yes, it might work...
He was... not delighted! It's not 3D models, but rather 2D-planes placed in a 3D-world, like billboards.
Sweet ! Do you guys have the plan to add a lot more factions to the game to reach 8-10 or more as the time goes on?
It's beautiful! Still some framedrops, but hey, I think players will be cool with it overall!
The framedrops should pretty much be gone by now, the video material for this video is actually over 6 months old :D
A lot of risk, and I am sure it will pay out. I definitely got interested in this game recently because of the artstyle.
Awesome, then we did something right!
That is great to hear. So we won over a few more people, perhaps a lot more, by doing the hard thing and starting over from scratch :)
