I think the most frustrating thing as a 42yo once-graphic artist is that, when I was in elementary school, my best friend and I used to create our own games on paper, compete with hand-made pixel art characters on graph paper. I never translated it to a digital skill, though, even though I had the Tandy draw program available, and I find now that I need to relearn what I intuitively grasped as a kid all over again. Here we go...
These are great videos. I’m looking for some new creative hobbies to get into. Just saw a piece of pixel art I really liked on Twitter and thought hey I should give this a try. Looking forward to applying some of the lessons in this video!
Pixel art is a hobby of mine that I've done for years and I certainly wouldn't call myself professional so take what I say with a pinch of salt if you must. I do admire your commitment to your game and you clearly have great work ethic which all lends well to finishing a game, but I can certainly see that you still have ways to go before calling your pixel art professional. The Sphinx for example could be improved in so many ways, anatomy, better use of light to create more volumetric shapes, cleaner clusters and more. I'm not saying it's bad, but I'm not going to tell you it's great either, it's perfectly good for what you're doing. Keep learning, keep improving, and most importantly, enjoy what you're doing.
That kinda depends though doesn't it? I mean, I'm very new to it, but sometimes going for a more simplistic style can be just as good as a more detailed style. Sometimes I've actually used more simple things to give the idea of a more complex thing with minimal effort
@MythicBeanProductions the thing is a lot of the simple design choices are made out of necessity, if you don't know how to do anything besides it you are going to stick with it. I wouldn't really say it's professional and there's a lot that could be improved apon, regardless of the style
As a beginner pixel artist it would be great if you made a tutorial for setting up ones canvas talk about how to adjust resolutions for saving the image as a png and maintaining the color and sharpness of the image. I'm really struggling with these things, everytime i save my pixel art the colors look desaturated and blurry even though I'm scaling up by 2 my resolution each time I save an image. Any tips would be great!
This would be a great video idea...definitely something I'll work on over the next couple months to create a video on! I like to balance my tips with my entertainment content so lookout for it in the next couple months!
9:14 not necessarily, that's only the case if the light source is warm: despite what many tutorials affirm natural light is white, not yellowis., Furthermore lighter/darker colors aren't necessarily less/more saturated, chroma is also a factor in that. Otherwise great tutorial!
Haii, I'm programming a farming game like Stardew Valley and I would like some characters running around but the time effort for pixeling every animation for many characters is just too high. Do you have some kind of advice or a tool for me to help? Every help is appreciated!
Would someone with no art skill be able to learn to pixel art? Been trying digital art for about two years I don't feel I make progress. Also second question, is that music from Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness or am I mistaken xD
Pixel art community, whats up! Quick question, I am trying to make a oldschool final fight / streets of rage type game, multiplayer, power ups, mobile and console able, what game program would you fine people suggest?
Im trying to make a video game, might never come out, but im trying to learn pixel, and i barely understand what im doing, so this is helpful. (Also i think that darker, worse shaded sphinx looks cooler)
it's harmful to your art skills in the long term if you begin with pixel art. Learn the fundamentals with digital art first, and then just apply them to pixel art. a lot of people make the mistake of thinking pixel art as separate from other types of digital art.
Honestly your pixel art isn't very impressive and def not "professional". It's not bad but I even disagree with the points made about scale and the big one is over-detailed to its own detriment
You're clueless mate. Clearly you have some vision of objectively correct pixel art, when the reality is that many styles are professional, and you just aren't fond of this one. Undertale is the prime example of art that is iconic and certainly professional without being the exact style of, say, FF6. The problem isn't this guy's art. It's your misunderstanding of how art works.

Perfect Timing!! Was just looking for ways to improve at pixel art
Awesome, hope the video helps!
64x64 is actually 4 x the pixels of 32 x 32

The most backhanded encouragement
I don't see You making professional pixel art tutorials👀
@@user-si7nd3tr1v I'm not a professional pixel artist, I don't see any point in sharing my bad habits with others.

Oop wrong section sorry
What programs do you use for making your pixel art, animating it, and for coding the 2D game?
Hes using Aseprite for drawing and animating, and Game Maker Studio 2 for coding.
that left one looked good tho...
I actually like it better 😅
What I do in pixel art is just draw like normal and it looks good! But sometimes I do gotta delete a few pixels cuz they look weird-
Incredible video, please continue make more! ❤❤
what pixel art program you draw on?
How do you create a game for beginners? I want to create my own pixel art game.
How much time you had taken to making your first game

Very nice, this will help me immensely!

I’m here because I want to make funny snails
Very cool video
to make a comparison, the 2 drawings must have the same resolution
Tell us you didn't watch the video without telling us:
Cool video, nothing much else to say.
Ayyy good tips in here! But are they enough to carry my garbage art? We'll just have to see
Haha best of luck!
Amazing video thank you, your videos are always motivating me (;
3:00 what is this game? I recognize it
Owl boy
@@Alanis1337 thanksss
Thanks man! Best of luck :)
another banger vid
Thank you!
Yeah, I didn't learn anything. This was more about your self promo and advertisement than a tutorial. Looking elsewhere
That's what I am looking for 😭
i knew it would be hue shifting
Wren sounds like a good tool for learning to increase my carbon footprint. And that's about all I got out of this
10th comment let’s go
Let's not disrespect the pixel thumbnail dog the reason he look so stupid is because he has no details on his fur

Who determined whats "professional" or not. If he makes a game with this art that sells well, then its professional

So I got nothing out of this.
